It comes after Phillip’s wife, Stephanie Lowe spoke out for the first time after the TV presenter came out as gay earlier this year.

Stephanie, who has been married to Phillip for 27 years, have two daughters together, Molly and Ruby.

“We have had to face the most emotionally painful time in our 27 years of marriage,” she told the Sun on Sunday.

“I love Phillip, as much today as I ever have, and always will.

“Although this is difficult for us all, I support Phillip in this taking this brave step and I will still be there, holding his hand.

“Everyone should be proud to live their own truth.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.

WhitakerSteve Pope/Getty Images

  • The interim appointment of a man unknown and unqualified, except for his open loyalty to the president, to one of the top law enforcement jobs in the federal government has happened before.
  • In May 1972, President Richard Nixon elevated Patrick Gray III to the directorship of the FBI a month before the Watergate burglars were apprehended in the DNC offices.
  • However, the appointment of Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general is slightly different as Gray was not appointed in the midst of an investigation that threatened to reach inside the Oval Office.
  • The timing and possible duration of Whitaker’s appointment give the acting attorney general maximum opportunity to wreak havoc.

It has happened before: the interim appointment of a man unknown and unqualified, except for his open loyalty to the president, to one of the top law enforcement jobs in the federal government.

It was May 1972 when President Richard Nixon abruptly elevated Patrick Gray III, a Justice Department official as colorless as his name, to the directorship of the FBI following the sudden death of J. Edgar Hoover. The announcement came as a shock.

Iran slams ‘brazen interventionist plan’ after Tillerson’s call for regime change https://briefnews.eu/iran-slams-brazen-interventionist-plan-after-tillersons-call-for-regime-change/ https://briefnews.eu/iran-slams-brazen-interventionist-plan-after-tillersons-call-for-regime-change/#respond Wed, 21 Jun 2017 01:53:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/iran-slams-brazen-interventionist-plan-after-tillersons-call-for-regime-change/ Iran has accused the United States of interfering in its domestic affairs after calls by the US Secretary of State to support “elements” that would ensure a “peaceful transition” in the Islamic Republic. Tehran also officially delivered a note of protest to the UN.

Speaking last Wednesday before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rex Tillerson said Washington will support efforts of a regime change in Iran.

“Our policy towards Iran is to push back on this hegemony, contain their ability to develop obviously nuclear weapons, and to work toward support of those elements inside of Iran that would lead to a peaceful transition of that government. Those elements are there, certainly as we know,” Tillerson said on June 14.

In addition to voicing Washington’s apparent support of a regime change, Tillerson also said the US could pursue sanctions on Iran’s entire Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Tillerson’s remarks sparked an avalanche of criticism and condemnation from Iran. In the latest development, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Swiss charge d’affaires to Tehran to protest Washington’s policy. The Embassy of Switzerland represents American interests in the Islamic Republic after the US cut diplomatic relations with Iran in April 1980 in the wake of the 400-day US Embassy hostage crisis of 1979-1981.

“Following the interfering and meddling statements made by the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson… the charge d’affaires of the European country was summoned to express Iran’s complaint about Tillerson’s anti-Iran remarks in the country’s House of Representatives,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement, Mehr News reported.

Earlier on Monday, Iran’s permanent envoy to the UN also delivered a letter of protest to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council, accusing Washington of devising a “brazen interventionist plan.”

Tillerson’s remarks “is a brazen interventionist plan that runs counter to every norm and principle of international law, as well as the letter and spirit of UN Charter, and constitutes an unacceptable behavior in international relations,” Iran’s UN Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo said in the letter.

Tehran further accused the US of violating the 1981 Algiers Accords, a set of agreements signed by Washington and Tehran to end the Iran hostage crisis.

“The United States pledges that it is and from now on will be the policy of the United States not to intervene, directly or indirectly, politically or militarily, in Iran’s internal affairs,” Point I of the Accord reads.

Prior to the diplomatic maneuvers, the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said any US regime change game has always and will always fail in Iran.

“In the past 38 years, when has there been a time when you haven’t wanted to change the Islamic system?” Khamenei said according to the Tehran Times. “Your head has hit the rock each time and always will.”

“US officials should worry more about saving their own regime than changing Iran’s, where 75% of people just voted,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted, referring to Iran’s May 19 election and the high voter turnout.

“American extremists and Daesh (Islamic State, formerly ISIS/ISIL)” are “two sides of the same coin, both seeking to negatively influence the country’s internal environment and make security issues a major concern for Iran,” the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said in reaction to Tillerson’s remarks, the Tehran Times reported.

Already strained US-Iranian relations have deteriorated in recent months after Donald Trump assumed office.

During his campaign, Trump promised to “dismantle the disastrous [nuclear] deal with Iran,” which the Obama administration lauded among its main foreign policy achievements.

While Tillerson acknowledged last week, that the State’s Department Iranian policy is still “under development,” and has “not yet been delivered to the president.”

Trump has also previously branded Iran as “the number one terrorist state.”

The frosty bilateral relations between the US and Iran has iced further after Tehran accused the US of sponsoring terrorism following the deadly terrorist gun and bomb attacks on the Iranian parliament and Ayatollah Khomeini’s shrine in Tehran earlier this month. At least 13 people were killed and dozens injured in the twin attacks.

Police in suburban Tampa are on the lookout for a pack of crooks they say drove a pickup truck through the front of a strip-mall gun store in the course of a daring robbery.

Around 2 a.m. April 9, a bright blue Toyota Tundra blasted through the front of Sunshine State Armory, a gun store in Zephyrhills, Fla. After the truck’s dramatic entrance, which was caught on the store’s surveillance cameras, three dudes rushed in and looted the place. One guy went to work on the display cases with a hammer, while another scooped pistols and ammo into a large sack. The third loaded up as many long guns as he could carry. The whole incident, from the moment the truck hit the building to when the last crook ran out of the store, took less than a minute.

AWFLAreporter asked Zephyrhills Police Capt. Derek Brewer if the break-in at Sunshine State Armory was related to a string of other similar crimes that has plagued the Tampa Bay Area recently – one in Inverness, one in Tampa, and one in Lakeland.

“We don’t know that,” said Brewer. “It certainly does seem to fit the M.O. to several of those.”

Neighbors of the gun store were shocked that such a crime could happen in their community, and expressed concerns about the stolen weapons.

“They’re smashing and grabbing guns. What are the gonna do with the guns? And where are they gonna do it?” asked Sandie Mcilwaine.

“I can’t believe that happened like right where we usually go to eat. You never think it’s gonna happen,” said Liberty Hagan.

The Toyota, which turned out to be stolen, was found later burned to the ground along some nearby railroad track. Zephyrhills PD is offering a $ 2,500 reward for information.

Cutting other drivers off in traffic is a surefire way to incite widespread road rage.

But one man soon regretted his choice to be selfish on the roads.

Footage taken from the dashboard of the driver’s car, showed the vehicle speeding down a highway in Connecticut.

Starting off in the left lane, the car then merged into the middle lane, where it zipped past cars in the right lane.

The cars slowly built up as they waited to take an exit, which had been held up by traffic.

Rather than merging in at a safe distance, the driver decided to speed alongside the cars by staying in the middle lane.

Just as the exit loomed, the car veered right into the lane and tucked in front of a car at a near-standstill.

In doing so, he illegally cut across the lined island which formed the exit.

The driver thought he’d gotten away with his cunning plan until he saw the police car sitting just two cars in front.

All of a sudden, the door of the police car opened and a Connecticut State Trooper stepped out, angrily pointing her finger at the driver.

The officer motioned for the driver to pull over and as he does, he casually asked her: ”What’s up?”

She replied, ”You can’t cross that solid white line,” before the clip cut out.

The driving video has gone viral since it was shared online, receiving more than 280,000 views on LiveLeak.

More than 1,000 people have commented on the clip, with many sharing their mutual distaste for getting cut off in traffic.

Another driver suffered instant karma when they tried to cut off a black car on the highway.

The black vehicle turned out to be an undercover police car, which lit up with sirens as soon as it was cut off – and the whole incident was captured on video.

‘That crime was so obvious’: How a brazen killing upended the Philippines’ harsh anti-drug crackdown https://briefnews.eu/that-crime-was-so-obvious-how-a-brazen-killing-upended-the-philippines-harsh-anti-drug-crackdown/ https://briefnews.eu/that-crime-was-so-obvious-how-a-brazen-killing-upended-the-philippines-harsh-anti-drug-crackdown/#respond Mon, 13 Feb 2017 01:16:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/that-crime-was-so-obvious-how-a-brazen-killing-upended-the-philippines-harsh-anti-drug-crackdown/ Philippine National Police chief General Ronald Dela Rosa whispers to President Rodrigo Duterte during the announcement of the disbandment of police operations against illegal drugs at the Malacanang palace in Manila, Philippines January 29, 2017. MANILA (Reuters) – When Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte summoned his security chiefs to an urgent meeting one Sunday night last month, his mind was already made up.

His military and law enforcement heads had no idea what was coming: a suspension of the police force’s leading role in his signature campaign, a merciless war on illegal drugs.

There was only one reason for the U-turn, three people who attended the Jan. 29 meeting told Reuters.

Duterte was furious that drugs-squad cops had not only kidnapped and murdered a South Korean businessman, they had strangled him to death in the headquarters of the Philippines National Police itself.

“He was straight to the point — ‘I am ordering you to disband your anti-drug units, all units,'” said Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, who was at the meeting in the presidential palace.

Duterte decided that the much smaller Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) would take over the drugs crackdown, with support from the military.

It was a stunning turnaround by Duterte, who had until then stood unswervingly behind his police force through months of allegations that its officers were guilty of extra-judicial killings and colluding with hit men in a campaign that has claimed the lives of more than 7,600 people, mostly drug pushers and users, in seven months.

The blunt-spoken president had repeatedly defied calls from United Nations, the United States and the European Union to rein in his war on drugs, calling them stupid and ‘sons of bitches’. Duterte’s aides were used to his mercurial style, but they were taken aback that the killing of one foreigner would be enough to stop him in his tracks.

One explanation is that relations with South Korea are of huge importance to the Philippines for development aid, tourism, overseas employment and military hardware.

But security officials said it was the audacity of the killing of Jee Ick-joo and the attempt to use the war on drugs as a cover for kidnap and ransom that triggered his decision.

“It’s all about the Korean. That it happened at all, it’s really that (which) pissed him off,” Lorenzana told Reuters.

PDEA Director General Isidro Lapena, who was also at the meeting, hadn’t seen it coming either.

He said in an interview that the president had lambasted the police force and told them that the “deactivation” and purge of its anti-drugs unit was now as important as the drugs war itself.

Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa told Reuters that Duterte had been “really mad” about the incident and, after the meeting, the president publicly denounced the police force as “corrupt to the core”.

‘So obvious’

The president’s legal counsel, Salvador Panelo, said the president, a former prosecutor, makes decisions strictly on the basis of the letter of the law. Activists’ allegations of summary executions had no supporting evidence, he said, yet to Duterte, Jee’s killing was irrefutable, audacious and embarrassing.

“The committing of that crime was so obvious,” he said.

Worried that the incident would dent the Philippines’ image in South Korea, Duterte sent Panelo to Seoul to apologize to acting president Hwang Kyo-ahn.

Seoul is Manila’s biggest supplier of military hardware, donating or selling fighter jets, patrol boats, frigates and trucks.

About 1.4 million South Koreans visited the Philippines in the first 10 months of 2016 – a quarter of all tourists arrivals – lured by beaches, golf and the sex industry. Korean tourists spend an average $ 180-$ 200 daily, and their overall spending is triple that of U.S. visitors.

South Korea is the Philippines’ fifth-largest source of development aid and in 2015 invested $ 520 million in areas like power, tourism and electronics manufacturing.

About 55,000 Filipinos work in South Korea and the Philippines attracts Koreans studying English, over 3,700 of them last year.

A South Korean diplomat in Manila said there were no threats or pressure on the Philippine government over the killing of the businessman, but Seoul wanted a guarantee of safety for its citizens and a secure investment climate.

Hoik Lee, president of the Korean Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, said South Koreans felt increasingly unsafe in the country.

The chamber’s membership has grown from 20 firms in 1995 to 500 companies now, including Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Hanjin and LG, but Lee estimated that the Korean community has shrunk by about a third to 100,000 people since 2013 despite the bright economic outlook in the Philippines.

“Police should protect us not kill us,” Lee said. “That is why we are very upset and very shocked.”

The number of Koreans murdered in the Philippines averages about 10 each year, accounting for a third of all Korean nationals killed overseas, according to Seoul’s foreign ministry.

However, South Koreans are perpetrators of crime as much as they are its victims in the Philippines, says the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, which has a Korean desk handling cases of kidnappings, murder, robbery, theft, extortion and fraud, mostly in Korean communities, where mafias operate.
