Did you think Tesla could move past braking complaints just because it addressed the issue with the Model 3? Luxembourg certainly doesn’t. The European country’s testing and standards body ILNAS has put itself at odds with Tesla after conducting an unusually public emergency braking test (media outlets like Luremberg Wort got to watch) that compared a 2015-era Model S to a new Volvo S90.The Model S failed the test in spectacular fashion, according to observers, crashing into a dummy car (above) at just under 19MPH where the S90 could avoid it at 37MPH. It didn’t look good for Tesla, but the company unsurprisingly took issue with the results.

In a statement to Electrek, a spokesperson said that ILANS “refused” to provide details of the test, including the methodology. The firm didn’t even find out about the test until it appeared in the press. The automaker also found out that the Model S in question is registered as a rental car in Germany. The spokesperson promised that Tesla would “continue to investigate” the nature of the test to ensure it was conducted properly.

The test raises a number of questions. Why pit a three-year-old rental car against a brand new rival? Why run the test in front of the media? Even so, the results raise concerns about whether or not Tesla’s older braking system (particularly automatic emergency braking) is up to par. Even if Model S cars made in late 2016 or later don’t have this issue, the company will want to be sure that its older EVs remain roadworthy.

A wireless update of antilock braking software improved the stopping distance of Tesla’s electric Model 3, prompting Consumer Reports to reverse course and give the car its “Recommended Buy” rating.

The magazine said Wednesday that the update cut 19 feet off the car’s stopping distance from 60 miles per hour. A previous test — the results of which were released a little more than a week ago — found that it took 152 feet for the Model S compact car to stop from 60, the longest braking distance of any modern car the magazine has tested.

Emergency auto braking: Make it standard or buyers will skip it https://briefnews.eu/emergency-auto-braking-make-it-standard-or-buyers-will-skip-it/ https://briefnews.eu/emergency-auto-braking-make-it-standard-or-buyers-will-skip-it/#respond Fri, 22 Dec 2017 18:08:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emergency-auto-braking-make-it-standard-or-buyers-will-skip-it/

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the non-profit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety together announced data related to the number of cars sold in 2017 that featured automatic emergency braking systems. We can’t say it was especially surprising, but one truth seems to emerge: they are, perhaps obviously, far more common in brands that provide auto braking as standard equipment across the bulk of a model’s trim lineup. If it’s an option, and especially if it’s restricted to a package exclusive to an upper trim level, people will skip it.

Toyota sold the largest number of vehicles with automatic braking — 1.4 million cars out of 2.5 total — which is indicative of the fact that many of its cars and crossovers come standard with it as part of the company’s Toyota Safety Sense package. That number should also go up in 2018 as the new Camry comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense.

GM was next, selling 551,777 vehicles. This is somewhat of an outlier as safety tech is almost always optional on GM’s volume-selling vehicles, however, it’s also widespread and available throughout most of their models’ trim levels. GM also had the advantage in selling 2.8 million cars total last year. Honda was third with 492,330 sold, which makes sense as Honda Sensing is standard on the volume-selling EX levels of the 2017 Civic and CR-V, and optional on all 2017 Accord trim levels. Every 2018 Accord will come standard with Honda Sensing, which should raise the 2018 auto braking volume number considerably.

In terms of percentage of vehicles sold by a manufacturer, Mercedes and Tesla led the way with nearly 100 percent. Next was Audi at 73 percent, Volvo at 68 percent and BMW at 58 percent. Toyota and Subaru would seem to have the highest percentage among non-luxury brands.

Then there’s the bottom. Fiat-Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi and Ford sold less than 10 percent of its vehicles in 2017 with automatic emergency braking. This is the result of not only being optional, but typically optional only on pricey upper trim levels and sometimes groups with unrelated, non-safety items. This is especially the case with Ford, which would explain why only 2 percent of Fords had auto braking despite the feature being widely available across its huge model lineup.

In other words, folks are unlikely to pay extra for auto braking and dealers are unlikely to add it when optional.

Investigation reveals that semi driver, not automatic braking, saved child from collision https://briefnews.eu/investigation-reveals-that-semi-driver-not-automatic-braking-saved-child-from-collision/ https://briefnews.eu/investigation-reveals-that-semi-driver-not-automatic-braking-saved-child-from-collision/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 17:43:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/investigation-reveals-that-semi-driver-not-automatic-braking-saved-child-from-collision/

Earlier this week we brought you a dash-cam video of a harrowing near-collision between a child who darted out into traffic on a busy country road and an approaching semi. It was thought to be an illustration of the effectiveness of Volvo‘s autonomous Automatic Emergency Braking technology.

Turns out, the miraculous miss is down to simple heads-up human reaction.

In a Facebook post, Latvian logistics firm Kreiss said it investigated the incident in concert with Volvo to determine exactly what, or who, prevented the calamity.

“The investigation revealed that in this particular situation, which happened on 19 June 2017 in Herad in the south of Gol municipality in Norway, it was 100% human reaction,” the company writes. “The report shows that distance between the truck and the child, who suddenly appeared on the road, was critically short. Moreover, the small-height child was running and appeared on the road unexpectedly. Thus, in that particular situation, it was impossible for the Volvo FH emergence braking system to recognize the child as an obstacle, and stop urgently. From the above stated, it could be concluded, that it was the truck driver, who managed to evaluate situation accordingly, his prompt reaction and immediate action that prevented the accident from happening.”

Kreiss goes on to credit Volvo engineers “who developed the innovative technical features” of the Automatic Emergency Braking system, but also cites the truck’s low-rolling resistance tires and the “great performance of our driver and specialists of our training department” for the near miss.

Kreiss’ full post is embedded below. The video also shows that the child made a critical decision to change direction and pivot away from the braking, oncoming rig at the last moment. It’s a good lesson in why it’s so important not to dart out from behind a stopped bus.

2018 Nissan Altima Priced, Adds Automated Emergency Braking and Forward-Collision Warning https://briefnews.eu/2018-nissan-altima-priced-adds-automated-emergency-braking-and-forward-collision-warning/ https://briefnews.eu/2018-nissan-altima-priced-adds-automated-emergency-braking-and-forward-collision-warning/#respond Tue, 26 Sep 2017 20:12:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2018-nissan-altima-priced-adds-automated-emergency-braking-and-forward-collision-warning/ Nissan has announced U.S. pricing for the 2018 Nissan Altima, which is on sale now at Nissan dealers nationwide. For the 2018 model year, all Altima models include Nissan’s advanced Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Intelligent Forward Collision Warning (I-FCW) as standard equipment. The MSRP for the 2018 Nissan Altima begins at ,140.

–

As the saying goes, everything has its price, and that includes the 2018 Nissan Altima. Nissan has trimmed last year’s seven-model Altima lineup to five, ditching the base car as well as, at the other end of the spectrum, the V-6–powered 3.5 SR. The five Altima trim levels that remain haven’t changed much, but automated emergency braking and forward-collision warning have been made standard on all models, while the top-level 3.5 SL gets standard adaptive cruise control and NissanConnect, which includes navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

–

With the base model gone, we expected the prices to rise at least a little for models powered by the 179-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder/continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) combo. The new base model, the 2.5S, starts at $ 24,025, only $ 240 more than the outgoing base Altima. At $ 25,085, the jazzier-looking 2.5 SR is actually priced $ 270 less than last year’s model and gets smoked headlight and taillight housings, fog lights, a decklid spoiler, a power driver’s seat, manual shifting capability for the CVT, paddle shifters, leather on the steering wheel and the gearshifter, sport-themed trim, a tweaked suspension, and special 18-inch wheels.

–

Next up, at $ 26,670, is the more feature-laden 2.5 SV, which includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The leather-lined 2.5 SL and 3.5 SL follow and also come standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen with navigation, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel, among other niceties. They’re priced at $ 29,880 for the four-cylinder model and $ 34,395 for the V-6, with the latter representing the greatest price jump at $ 820 more than the previous version.

–

–

The 2018 model year may be a short one for the current Altima as well as its swan song. A redesigned 2019 Altima is expected to hit dealerships before summer, and while we know a fair amount about that car already, the only thing we know about its price is that, well, it’ll have one.

Drivers at risk over wrong advice on braking distances from Highway Code https://briefnews.eu/drivers-at-risk-over-wrong-advice-on-braking-distances-from-highway-code/ https://briefnews.eu/drivers-at-risk-over-wrong-advice-on-braking-distances-from-highway-code/#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2017 01:11:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/drivers-at-risk-over-wrong-advice-on-braking-distances-from-highway-code/

It found that the distance taken to bring a car travelling at 70mph to a halt is 27 yards more than the Code recommends.

That means it takes six car lengths more than the 104 yards recommended by the Code.

The study by the Transport Research Laboratory found that average thinking time when reacting to a hazard is 1.5 seconds or double the 0.67 seconds set out in the Highway Code.

The study was commissioned by road safety charity Brake, which urged the Government to increase the Code’s recommended stopping distances.

It found that the average total stopping distance at 20mph is 21 yards, compared to the Code’s 13 yards.

At 30mph Brake recommends 34 yards, compared to the Code’s 25 yards.

At 40mph the stopping distance should be nearly 56 yards compared to the Code’s 39 yards, at 50mph it should be 77 yards compared to 58 yards and at 60mph the figures are 104 yards compared to 80 yards.

Brake spokesman Jason Wakeford said: “These figures suggest stopping distances taught to new drivers in the Highway Code fall woefully short. Even though car braking technology has improved in recent years, the majority of the overall stopping distance at most speeds is actually made up of the time taken to perceive the hazard and react. (Our) research shows that average thinking time is more than double that set out in the Highway Code.

“A true understanding of how long it takes to stop a car in an emergency is one of the most important lessons for new drivers.

“Understanding true average thinking time reminds all drivers how far their car will travel before they begin to brake − as well as highlighting how any distraction in the car which extends this time, like using a mobile phone, could prove fatal.

“Brake is calling on the Government to increase the stopping distances in the Highway Code as a matter of urgency.”

The Department for Transport (DfT) said it would consider the findings.

But it stressed that in 2011 it made it compulsory for all passenger vehicles to be fitted with brake assist, so vehicles stop in the least possible distance.

The DfT said brake and tyre technologies have advanced significantly since the Code’s table was compiled, but road users do need to be aware of other factors – such as whether the car is going downhill and the state of its brakes.

Other factors include whether the vehicle is carrying a heavy load and whether the roads are wet or icy.

In good conditions drivers are usually advised to keep a two-second distance from the vehicle in front, rising to at least four seconds in wet conditions and 10 on snow and ice.

A DfT spokesman said: “We have some of the safest roads in the world and we are always looking at ways to make them safer. “Stopping distances in the Highway Code are intended to inform motorists of the thinking and braking time needed to stop a vehicle at different speeds.

“We will carefully consider these findings.”

Carmakers diverge on how quickly to rollout automatic braking https://briefnews.eu/carmakers-diverge-on-how-quickly-to-rollout-automatic-braking/ https://briefnews.eu/carmakers-diverge-on-how-quickly-to-rollout-automatic-braking/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2017 09:28:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/carmakers-diverge-on-how-quickly-to-rollout-automatic-braking/

(Reuters) — Big automakers are rushing to launch self-driving cars as early as 2021, but the industry’s major players are moving slowly when it comes to widespread deployment of a less expensive crash prevention technology that regulators say could prevent thousands of deaths and injuries every year.

Nissan Motor Co Ltd said on Thursday it would make automatic braking systems standard on an estimated 1 million 2018 model cars and light trucks sold in the United States, including high-volume models such as the Rogue and Rogue Sport compact sport utility vehicles, the Altima sedan, Murano and Pathfinder SUVs, LEAF electric car, Maxima sedan and Sentra small car.

Nissan sold about 1.6 million vehicles in the United States last year.

Rival Toyota Motor Corp has said it will make so-called automatic emergency braking standard on nearly all its U.S. models by the end of this year.

Overall, however, most automakers are not rushing to make automatic brake systems part of the base cost of mainstream vehicles sold in the competitive U.S. market. The industry has come under pressure from regulators, lawmakers and safety advocates to adopt the technology, which can slow or stop a vehicle even if the driver fails to act.

So far, only about 17 percent of models tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety offered standard collision-avoiding braking, according to data supplied by the auto safety research group backed insurance industry. Many of the models with standard collision-avoiding brake systems are luxury vehicles made by European or Japanese manufacturers.

The systems require more sensors and software than conventional brakes, and automakers said they need time to engineer the systems into vehicles as part of more comprehensive makeovers.

Last year, 20 automakers reached a voluntary agreement with U.S. auto safety regulators to make collision-avoiding braking systems standard equipment by 2022.

Safety advocates have petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to begin a regulatory process to require the technologies, but the agency has said the voluntary agreement will result in faster deployment than a formal rule-making process. NHTSA says the technology could eliminate one-fifth of crashes.

“Do the math. That’s 5 million crashes every year – 20 percent reduction means 1 million less. Those are big numbers,” Mark Rosekind, the NHTSA’s then-administrator, told Reuters last year.

But customers would likely experience the benefits of the technology infrequently. The technology to enable a car to drive itself is far more costly, but industry executives foresee autonomous vehicles driving revenue-generating transportation services that could be attractive to investors.

General Motors Co offers automatic braking as optional equipment on about two-thirds of its models. The company did not say on Thursday how many vehicles have the technology as standard equipment. GM has not made public its plans to make the technology standard across its lineup.

“Any time you have a voluntary agreement you have a spectrum of implementation,” Jeff Boyer, GM’s vice president for safety, told Reuters earlier this week. Asked when GM would roll out standard automatic braking, Boyer said, “let’s just say we honor the voluntary commitment.”

Ford Motor Co “has a plan to standardize over time,” the company said in a statement on Thursday. Currently, automatic braking systems are optional on several 2017 Ford and Lincoln models, and will be offered on certain 2018 models including the best-selling F-150 pickup truck.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV offers automatic braking as optional equipment in nine model lines, using cameras and radar to detect hazards ahead. The company has said it will meet the 2022 target for making the systems standard.

As 2018 models roll out during the second half of this year, more vehicles will offer automatic braking, said Dean McConnell, an executive with Continental AG’s North American business. Continental’s automatic braking technology systems will be on certain Nissan models.

“We see it accelerating,” he said. “It varies. There are some (automakers) that are being aggressive” and others that are waiting.

Nissan did not disclose how much prices for vehicles would rise to offset the cost of standard automatic emergency braking. The 2018 models will be launched later this year. Currently, Nissan, like most carmakers, offers automatic braking as part of a bundle of optional safety and technology features.

A 2017 Nissan Sentra compact sedan has a starting price of $ 17,875. To buy the car equipped with automatic braking requires spending another $ 6,820 for a Sentra SR with a premium technology package.

German auto technology suppliers Continental and Robert Bosch GmbH will supply the systems, Nissan said.

(This version of the story corrects number of model lines in which Fiat Chrysler offers automatic braking as optional equipment to nine instead of seven, paragraph 15)
