As has become customary with any new Star Wars saga film, very little is known about what is coming in the final chapter of the Skywalker saga. Star Wars Episode 9 is currently in production, and very few secrets are making their way on to the web, which isn’t surprising since Mark Hamill recently compared the secrecy surrounding the franchise as something akin to being in the CIA. But with rumblings of a teaser trailer not far off, one new detail has emerged about the Star Wars Episode 9 setting.

Find out how long after Star Wars: The Last Jedi the events of Star Wars Episode 9 will take place.

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, an article about Star Wars Episode 9 reveals the setting of the sequel:

If you don’t want to zoom in and read the entire article, the key piece of information comes courtesy of John Boyega, who has confirmed that Star Wars Episode 9 takes place roughly one year after the events of The Last Jedi. Coincidentally enough, it was Boyega who provided a previous detail that teased the possibility of a time jump between the two movies. Back in May, Boyega said this before the start of production:

“I can’t wait to start shooting the next and final leg of the franchise. The first step is growing out my hair, so you can wait for the trailer to see why.”

The fact that Boyega was growing out his hair to reprise his role as Finn, the defected Stormtrooper turned Rebel scum, was a good indicator that a decent amount of time was going to pass after the events of The Last Jedi. That goes back to the style of the original trilogy which had a good amount of time pass between trilogy chapters, unlike the passage of time between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, which was essentially no time at all.

A time jump for Star Wars Episode 9 makes sense since the end of The Last Jedi saw the Resistance putting out the call to any remaining allies to help them in the fight against the First Order. Luke Skywalker’s last stand against Kylo Ren and his fleet of walkers was meant to be the spark that brought more to the cause of the Resistance, and the end of The Last Jedi seemed to tease that it was going to work. So picking up a year after the events of that movie allow us to catch up with a Resistance who might have more numbers and resources to keep fighting back against the First Order.

Hopefully we’ll learn a lot more about Star Wars Episode 9 soon with rumors of a teaser trailer not far off. Stay tuned.

Attack the Block actor John Boyega is currently reprising his role as Finn in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX, but he’ll return to space again in Hold Back the Stars, a movie adaptation of a sci-fi romance novel that will team him with Black Panther breakout Letitia Wright.

The project is being described as “Romeo & Juliet meets Gravity,” and with those actors and that description, I’m already hooked. Learn more about the new movie below.

Deadline reports that author Katie Khan‘s novel Hold Back the Stars is getting the movie treatment, with Boyega and Wright attached in the lead roles. The story tracks “a man and a woman who revisit memories of their love affair on a utopian Earth while they are trapped in the vast void of space with only 90 minutes of oxygen left.” But the Amazon description paints a more detailed picture:

“We’re going to be fine.”

He looks around, but there’s nothing out here: nothing but the bottomless black universe on their left, the Earth suspended in glorious Technicolor to their right.

Trapped in the vast void of space, Carys and Max have only ninety minutes of oxygen left to live. None of this was supposed to happen. After a freak accident, Carys and Max are left adrift in space with nothing to hold onto but each other. As they fall, they can’t help but look back at the world they left behind: a world whose rules they couldn’t submit to, a place where they never really belonged; a home they’re determined to get back to because they’ve come too far to lose each other now. While their air ticks dangerously low, one is offered the chance of salvation—but who will take it?

Mike Cahill is set to direct from a script by Christy Hall. Cahill broke out with the impressive sci-fi indie Another Earth back in 2011, and went on to direct episodes of Hulu’s The Path, NBC’s Rise, and The Magicians and Nightflyers for SyFy. He directed one other feature, the little-seen I Origins, back in 2014, but Hold Back the Stars will mark his return to the big screen. Hall doesn’t have any produced screenwriting credits yet, but she’s writing the script for a remake of last year’s Norwegian movie Thelma and developing a drama called Daddio that may end up starring Boyega’s Star Wars co-star Daisy Ridley.

There’s no indication yet about which studio will scoop up this “hot package creating buzz around town,” but it shouldn’t be long until someone leaps at the opportunity to put Boyega and Wright, two of this generation’s most charismatic actors, on screen together in a sweeping sci-fi romance.

John Boyega Has Met With Marvel Before, Would be Open to Play a Superhero in the Future https://briefnews.eu/john-boyega-has-met-with-marvel-before-would-be-open-to-play-a-superhero-in-the-future/ https://briefnews.eu/john-boyega-has-met-with-marvel-before-would-be-open-to-play-a-superhero-in-the-future/#respond Mon, 02 Apr 2018 21:06:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/john-boyega-has-met-with-marvel-before-would-be-open-to-play-a-superhero-in-the-future/ john boyega marvel

Pacific Rim Uprising proved that John Boyega is long due for a franchise to headline on his own. But could that franchise be a Marvel superhero series?

Maybe, Boyega said at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. The Star Wars and Pacific Rim Uprising actor hinted that he met with Marvel in the past, but would probably not play a superhero until somewhere “down the line.”

Boyega already has two massive sci-fi franchises under his belt, but could he add a superhero franchise on top of that? Hypothetically yes, Boyega told the moderator at the Awesome Con panel on Saturday. And if had to choose between the DCEU or the MCU,  Boyega answered, “I mean it would have to be Marvel.”

But playing a Marvel superhero may be more than just a pipe dream. Boyega revealed to everyone in attendance at Awesome Con (including yours truly) that he’d had meetings with Marvel in the past.

I’ve been into meetings before at Marvel and I’m a big fan of what they’re doing. But right now I’m just trying to get into over Infinity War trailer. Thanos is not kidding around! I’m happy to be part of Star Wars now, but down the line I definitely [would play a Marvel hero].

The question now is: Who would he play? Boyega has been rumored to take on the role of the vampire hunter Blade before after fan art surfaced of him as the character originated on screen by Wesley Snipes. But Boyega has shot down the possibility of playing Blade before in an interview with /Film’s Ben Pearson, and he shot it down again at Awesome Con:

I believe it would be a spit in the face of Wesley Snipes if I took Blade. I like Wesley. And he actually followed me on Twitter the other [day]. I went on his DMs and was like, “It’s an honor to meet you! By the way, you are Blade.

So it’s TBD on who Boyega would play if he were to join the Marvel universe in the future. But the good thing is that he’s got plenty of options. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will only expand cosmically after Avengers 4, and this year’s mega-hit Black Panther offers a whole array of rich, complex black characters.

That is, if Boyega doesn’t get burned out with franchises after Star Wars wraps up. Boyega did note that “I’ve got to take a break from sci-fi after [Star Wars and Pacific Rim]” but he quickly said that superhero movies don’t count. Good, because the MCU could use an energetic, charismatic actor like Boyega.

Avengers Infinity War: John Boyega joining MCU as Blade? Star Wars Last Jedi actor SPEAKS https://briefnews.eu/avengers-infinity-war-john-boyega-joining-mcu-as-blade-star-wars-last-jedi-actor-speaks/ https://briefnews.eu/avengers-infinity-war-john-boyega-joining-mcu-as-blade-star-wars-last-jedi-actor-speaks/#respond Mon, 02 Apr 2018 16:33:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/avengers-infinity-war-john-boyega-joining-mcu-as-blade-star-wars-last-jedi-actor-speaks/

Marvel’s human-vampire hybrid was portrayed by Snipes in the Blade movie trilogy between 1998-2004.

And now with a new saga of the Cinematic Universe kicking off after Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4, fans have been wondering if the superhero will be rebooted.

One actor who some fans are backing is Star Wars’ Boyega, who was asked if he was up for taking on Blade.

Appearing at Awesome Con in Washington DC, the 26-year-old said: “[It would be a] spit in the face of Wesley [Snipes] if I took Blade. All for Wesley playing Blade.”

Interestingly Marvel boss Kevin Feige has even confirmed that Blade will enter the MCU at some point.

When Doctor Strange was released in 2016, he said: “They did ask a long time ago, and I think our answer was, ‘No, we’ll do something with Blade at some point.’ That’s still the answer.”

Meanwhile Spider-Man Homecoming director Jon Watts, who is working on the Web Slinger’s 2019 sequel, has teased how he’d like Morbius, the Living Vampire and Blade to show up.

Speaking in 2017, Watts said: “The tone of the character is pretty dark, but the vampire/Marvel Universe thing is pretty cool.

“Maybe we could get Blade to show up, too? That’d be neat.”

However Sony Pictures have since announced they have a Morbius spin-off in the works, but there’s still hope for Blade at Marvel.

‘Star Wars Episode 9’ Won’t Separate Finn and Rey, John Boyega Confirms https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-episode-9-wont-separate-finn-and-rey-john-boyega-confirms/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-episode-9-wont-separate-finn-and-rey-john-boyega-confirms/#respond Mon, 02 Apr 2018 03:12:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-episode-9-wont-separate-finn-and-rey-john-boyega-confirms/ episode 9 finn and rey

Finn and Rey are the heart and soul of the new Star Wars trilogy. When Daisy Ridley and John Boyega literally crashed into each other in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, they instantly had so much charm and chemistry that it was no question that they were fit to lead Star Wars into a new era.

That’s why it was such a tragedy that they were kept apart in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But don’t worry, Finn-Rey shippers. That dynamic that you loved so much in Force Awakens will be back in Star Wars Episode 9.

At Washington, D.C.’s annual Awesome Con, John Boyega confirmed that Finn and Rey won’t spend Episode 9 separated from each other.

“I haven’t read the script for Episode 9. But Daisy did shoot me a text saying, “Oh my gosh, I just heard from J.J. [Abrams], and we’re back together. That’s what I’m really excited about, is Finn and Rey back together again.”

This is amazing news for anyone who dearly loved the relationships in The Force Awakens. As the middle child of the trilogy, The Last Jedi naturally had to test each of the characters in their own separate storylines. And while it would have been nice to have our beloved Finn, Rey, and Poe be tested altogether, that just wouldn’t have worked, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson previously told us. “[These] guys don’t challenge each other,” Johnson said in an interview with /Filmcast.

I mean, I get it, but that doesn’t mean I was counting down the seconds until Finn and Rey were sharing scenes again. And we finally got it — in the final minutes of The Last Jedi.

But, if what Boyega says is correct, that will be the opposite case in Star Wars Episode 9. We’ll get Finn and Rey gallivanting across the galaxy, together again! But it won’t be so easy for them, with the Resistance members dwindling and the First Order under the command of Kylo Ren.

“I think it’s going to be all-out war in this final chapter, so we need to be prepared,” Boyega added at Awesome Con.

What else could we see in Episode 9? Boyega isn’t sure, since he hasn’t seen the script — even though the Star Wars sequel starts shooting in three months — but he does have one thing that he he hopes the movie will tackle: Finn’s backstory.

“One question I’ve always had as an actor being involved in Star Wars is why Finn decided to defect in the first place. I still don’t understand. I would love to know more, to go into his life as a Stormtrooper.”

With The Force Awakens J.J. Abrams returning to direct, effectively book-ending the trilogy, it would be sweet to see the beginnings of the rogue Stormtrooper who started it all.

Star Wars: Episode 9 is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2019.

John Boyega on ‘Pacific Rim Uprising,’ ‘Blade,’ and More [Interview] https://briefnews.eu/john-boyega-on-pacific-rim-uprising-blade-and-more-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/john-boyega-on-pacific-rim-uprising-blade-and-more-interview/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 18:24:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/john-boyega-on-pacific-rim-uprising-blade-and-more-interview/ John Boyega interview

Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost cast a long shadow in 2013’s Pacific Rim. He was a military man willing to sacrifice everything for the greater good. But Jake Pentecost is not like his father. In Pacific Rim Uprising, Jake is a scavenger who’s happy to ignore his father’s sacrifice – until he’s thrust into battle himself.

For 25-year-old John Boyega, Jake is different from Finn (Star Wars), Moses (Attack the Block), or any character he’s played yet. At the movie’s press junket earlier this month, I sat down with Boyega at the Universal Studios lot to talk about Jake’s swagger, the notion of legacy, the challenges of producing a sequel of this size, and his personal favorite ice cream toppings (it’ll make sense when you see the movie).

John Boyega Interview

This movie deals with the concept of legacy. As an actor, does that idea of legacy factor in to the choices you make when picking projects to be a part of?

Definitely. Specifically, artistic legacy is something artists in general find important. That quantitative release, what it does to the audience, how they perceive your performance, all that kind of stuff. It matters to me, definitely. Being involved in sci-fi, and anything I’ve done, really, has been a blatant and purposeful decision.

Jake has a swagger to him that we haven’t really seen from you before. Was that a particular aspect of the character that you connected with?

I loved, loved Jake’s swagger and the freedom of Jake. I wanted to implement that, because it’s so important in the writing that this came across as, ‘This guy is a rebel.’ My thing coming in was, ‘How do we layer this? How do you make it specific? An individual who doesn’t care what anybody thinks of him, and make him free?’ Jake embodies a free human being. He just doesn’t care.

You not only starred in this movie, but you produced it as well. What was that experience like for you?

It was a fantastic experience. I’ve always been the type to watch the special features of a Blu-ray disc or to jump into B-roll to see how it actually works on the set. I’m always intrigued by the various different departments that come together on a production like this, and the producing role, guarding and then guiding a project from its birth all the way up to its death on Blu-ray (laughs) was something I always wanted to be a part of.

How early did you come on? I know Guillermo del Toro wrote a few drafts very early in the process.

Yeah, I wasn’t involved when Guillermo del Toro was involved as a director, but once he stepped down and was producing and they hired Steve DeKnight, Steve DeKnight had given a few drafts and I came on board. We were still going through refining the parts and the roles. All the way through to working with pre-vis for the CG element, and then going to costumes, all the way into marketing. We’re still at it now!

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome from a producing standpoint?

The time. Time. (Sighs) It really felt like Han Solo was (laughs) establishing this whole thing. ‘Don’t tell me the odds!’ Because Lord, the odds were up against us in terms of how much time we had. Of course, casting gets really complicated when actors are tied to a schedule to do other projects. So you’re going around location scouting, trying to make all these things work out in a set time, and for me, it just got real crazy.

star wars the last jedi finn and rose

Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees Finn essentially go from somebody who’s running away to being a Resistance leader. Han Solo became a general when he stopped running in Return of the Jedi. Have you talked to J.J.? Can you tease the next step for Finn?

I really don’t know, but I’m going to try to meet him on my trip to L.A. before I head to China just for him to talk me through what his plans are, because I’m so intrigued to hear what he wants to do.

The Force Awakens didn’t feature a romantic relationship between Finn and Rey, and I think a lot of people loved that. But it seems like those same fans now really want to see Finn in a romance, whether it’s with Rey or Rose –

(Both at the same time): – or Poe.

Or Chewbacca, or anyone. You guys are going savage! (laughs)

(laughs) Why do you think that is, and who would you like to see Finn end up with?

Because Finn is the one character, for me, who has a distinct, unique relationship with everybody. He had this kind of banterous relationship with Han, then he has this loving relationship with Rey. Now with Rose, it feels like he has this great relationship. Personally? Rey. Yeah, Rey.

I think some people will be happy to hear you say that. I want to get back to Uprising for a second. A lot of this movie involves your character inside a jaeger piloting this thing, and I’m wondering how did you go about differentiating the intensity levels of the different scenes that you’re in so it didn’t all feel like a blur when you’re in this enclosed set?

Pre-visual animation. That’s what helped us schedule what we were filming on the interior scenes. What we would do is, Steve would plan out and we would roughly animate the CG world, bring in a copy on an iPad to show the actors before they do their parts. It’s very specific. Like anime, the fight moves the story forward. You’re not just there to fight. You’re fighting specifically for a reason and in a certain style. So all of the actors had to be on top of the intel. So Steve would show us, say, ‘This is what’s going on, this is the right fist that you punch, jaeger’s coming back to smash your face,’ and all the actors would just respond.

When you signed on to this movie, did you sign on for a sequel? Will we see Jake Pentecost in Pacific Rim 3 if this does well enough?

Yeah, yeah, exactly. If it does well enough, I’ll see to it.

You mentioned that the timing was the biggest challenge as a producer. What was the biggest challenge for you as an actor?

Nothing. (laughs)

Really? It was just easy for you? (laughs)

Yeah man, it was great. I love Jake. I love playing Jake. It was fun, always finding new, interesting ways of playing him. New ideas. Amping up his arrogance and cockiness was something that I really enjoyed doing. It was a good old time.

What kind of ice cream toppings do you prefer in your own life?

I mean, wish I had cookie dough. Cookie dough’s enough for me. I’m not going to add no sprinkles, but Jake – he likes sprinkles.

Blade - John Boyega

Did you happen to see the fan art of you as Blade that was making the rounds this morning? I’ve got it right here. (Shows him the photo)

[laughs] Oh wait, is this Boss Logic?

It is.

Oh yeah, my guy. What the hell? That’s a bit mad. A bit young, though. Young Blade.

If you could choose any character to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who would it be?

I really and truly don’t know. Because when I think about Blade, I think, ‘Whoa, eh, Wesley [Snipes] is coming back?’ We would all love to see Wesley come back one more time before we move on to anybody else. I don’t know. Good Lord. I think the Marvel universe is doing well right now.

A lot of times, actors start production companies to tell stories they aren’t being offered elsewhere. From a producing standpoint, are there any passion projects you’re excited about?

Yeah, definitely, and developing now, but I can’t speak about it.

Fair enough. Maybe I’ll catch up with you to talk about one of those when they get made.

Yeah! Definitely.

The Last Jedi left fans on a huge cliffhanger.

It was not quite the literal cliff edge that finished The Force Awakens, but was still left the audience with far more questions than answers.

In a new interview, Brit star Boyega spoke about where the ninth movie is heading and gave a huge clue to the rumoured time jump that will fast forward the story a few years into the future.

Most thrillingly, he confirmed that “Episode IX… is going to be all out war.”

Boyega was asked about his preparations for starting filming Episode 9 in just a few months.

He said: “Next for me filming wise is Star Wars: Episode 9 in July, and they’ve officially given us a note to start training soon. I’m going to take a holiday before that, because I think Episode IX you know, regardless of where the story goes, and I haven’t read it by the way, is going to be all out war so I know that I’m going to have to do all I can and train for that.”

He may not give away any plot details, but the tease over a galaxy-wide war surely confirms the reports that the next movie will jump forward a few years.

This makes total sense for two major reasons.

First it goves the filmmakers a very simple solution to how to say goodbye to Leia. Without Carrie Fisher to film any death scenes, it will be more effective to explain that she has died offscreen, with early rumours suggesting that her passing will be attributed the huge drain her spectacular display of Force powers took on her frail body when she “flew” through space.

Second, it was made clear in The Last Jedo that no revbel armires or armadas were coming to help the beleaguered Resistance remnants. They will need time to build support, presumably aided by growing unease as Kylo Ren starts to exert his power on the fractured galaxy.

Of the many ways Disney builds their Star Wars brand outside of the theater, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny may be one of the best. It’s a campaign made up of animated shorts, toys, and kids’ books that are all intended to bring some extra attention to the franchise’s female characters. We wrote about the first season of animated shorts last year, and now Disney is back with Forces of Destiny season 2.

Star Wars actors Daisy Ridley, Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Marie Tran, and more lend their voices to the animated versions of their characters, and this batch is especially notable because it features the return of Mark Hamill voicing Luke Skywalker. Check out all eight episodes below.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny Season 2

Talent from across Star Wars films and TV reprise their roles in these canonical stories – Mark Hamill (Luke), Daisy Ridley (Rey), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz), John Boyega (Finn), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose), Tiya Sircar (Sabine), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka), Vanessa Marshall (Hera), Catherine Taber (Padmé) and Matt Lanter (Anakin), among others.

Hasty Departure

Hera and Sabine liberate an Imperial shuttle only to find they have unexpected cargo – troopers!

Unexpected Company

Upset when Ahsoka joins a mission set for just he and Padmé, Anakin puts them on a dangerous path. Working alongside the secret couple, Ahsoka helps save the day.

Shuttle Shock

On their approach to Canto Bight, Finn and Rose learn to work together to navigate a pod of dangerous creatures.

Jyn’s Trade

Jyn helps a young thief learn a valuable lesson.

Run Rey Run

While scavenging inside a Star Destroyer, Rey is cornered by competition on the hunt for a valuable part.

Bounty Hunted

Maz Kanata helps Leia, Chewbacca and R2-D2 with a clever plan to free Han from Jabba the Hutt.

The Path Ahead

Training with Master Yoda in the swamps of Dagobah, Luke learns an important lesson.

Porg Problems

Rey has her training interrupted by some very mischievous porgs.

***

It’s cool to see a little more of Luke’s training with Yoda on Dagobah,  and getting a peek at more of the dynamic between Rose and Finn helps to build upon their relationship from The Last Jedi – even though the situation in which they find themselves in this video seems a little too cartoonish, even for a Star Wars animated short. But on the plus side, now it’s canon that Rey used the Force to stop a porg from leaping off a cliff after it stole her lightsaber. Those things rule.

Star Wars The Last Jedi Deleted Scenes
John Boyega quickly became one of the most beloved members of the Star Wars cast after his role as rogue Stormtrooper Finn in The Force Awakens. So it was with much anticipation that fans waited to see him take down his former foe, Captain Phasma, in The Last Jedi. But some fans were left unsatisfied by the short battle, and as it turns out, so was Boyega! “I didn’t expect it to be that quick if I’m being honest with you. I was like, wait, wait, what? He’s been like ramped up for a big fight and then it was over in a second,” Boyega told IGN.

The hatred among some for porgs has slightly died down now that The Last Jedi has left theaters, but fans of the cuddly critters are still celebrating them. In a super cute video from Leupsi some very cute animated porgs dance to a remix of the Cantina song from A New Hope! And we love EVERY SECOND OF IT!!

Mark Hamill Walk of Fame

The Last Jedi saw us say goodbye to the original young Jedi, Luke Skywalker, and fans were devastated. Hamill, on the other hand, has his own theory, and in this interview with Entertainment Weekly, he shared his wish for the farm boy from Tattooine. “My favorite is the fact that maybe he transported to somewhere else. And I thought, ‘Well, if he left his robes behind he’d have to go to a nudist colony,’” Hamill laughed.

Claudia Gray has been creating fantastic Star Wars novels since her Lost Stars. So we were super stoked when we found out (per Fanthatracks) that LINE Manga will be adapting her gorgeous Princess Leia prequel, Leia, Princess of Alderaan.
