Former teammates Frank Mahovlich, Ron Ellis and Dave Keon will share the stage with longtime Leafs broadcaster Joe Bowen at a special memorial event at the Air Canada Centre.
Bower’s grandson, Johnny Bower III, and Leafs president Brendan Shanahan will also speak about the legendary goalie and his place in the team’s history.
Bower, who died on Dec. 26 at 93 after a battle with pneumonia, played 11 seasons for the Leafs and was in goal for four of Toronto’s 13 Stanley Cups, the last one in 1967.
The two-time Vezina Trophy winner played in the American Hockey League for 13 seasons before earning a permanent spot in 1958 with the Leafs.
He was one of the oldest players on the ice throughout his NHL career, retiring at age 45 after playing one game in the 1969-70 season.
On a lighter note, he’s remembered for laying down the lead vocal for the chart-topping hit, Honky the Christmas Goose.
Fans are welcome to attend the memorial with seating available in the arena stands. Floor seating will be reserved for the family and special guests. Doors open at 2 p.m. and the celebration will begin at 3 p.m.
Members of Bower’s family — including his great grandchildren — were invited on the ice for a pregame ceremony Tuesday night before the Leafs took on the Tampa Bay Lightning. The short commemoration of Bower’s life included a video presentation showing a few colourful highlights from his career.
Morgan Rielly, Leafs defenceman, described Bower as a ‘great person.’ (Oliver Walters/CBC)
Earlier Tuesday, players from the Leafs current team took a moment before practice to reflect on Bower, who continued living in the city and was active in the Leafs organization and in the community long after he retired.
“He was a great guy, really genuine. Always had time for fans, always had time for the city,” said centre Nazem Kadri. “He really modelled how a Toronto Maple Leaf is supposed to be represented.”
Defenceman Morgan Rielly described Bower as a “great person.”
Left winger Matt Martin said Bower embraced Toronto as the city embraced him (Oliver Walters/CBC)
“He was one of those people that always made you feel important. His reputation around this dressing room is first-class,” he said.
“I feel lucky to have had the chance to get to know him.”
Left winger Matt Martin said Bower’s legacy lives on in the way the fans continue to embrace his spirit, even after retirement.
Kadri said he had the opportunity to get to know Bower and described him as ‘genuine.’ (Oliver Walters/CBC)
“Obviously, what he did for this franchise is pretty important. The centennial game last year, he got a huge standing ovation when they announced him,” Martin said.
]]>“Johnny loved being a Leaf,” said Brendan Shanahan, the franchise’s president during a morning news conference in Legends Row outside the Air Canada Centre on Wednesday, which includes a statue of Bower.
“There’s not a single player in Toronto Maple Leafs history that has done more appearances or more charity events and charity work than Johnny Bower,” Shanahan told reporters.

Bower, 93, died Tuesday after a short battle with pneumonia, according to a statement from his family. Shanahan said the team is trying to respect the family’s privacy, but that it will likely honour Bower in a fittingly grandiose fashion some time in the new year.
The two-time Vezina Trophy winner as the NHL’s top goaltender toiled in the American Hockey League for 13 seasons before earning a permanent spot in 1958 with the Leafs. With his name engraved on the Stanley Cup four times, Bower retired at 45 after playing one game in the 1969-70 season.
Bower was also a member of the Leafs’ last Stanley Cup title, in 1967.
“Not too many people in sports have a name that becomes a verb,” Shanahan joked to reporters. “When you’re playing street hockey and you poke check somebody you yell, “Johnny Bower! I just Johnny Bower’d you.'”

Shanahan grew to know Bower more personally in recent years and stressed that beyond public appearances and charitable work, he did much for fans privately as well.
His legacy will live on, Shanahan said, because there are those who remember him as a player and many generations after who know him for his amicable attitude with fans and impeccable professionalism as a face of the franchise.
“He was a legend in the sense that you didn’t have to be living in Toronto or working for the Maple Leafs to know about his spirit and hear the stories of his generosity and his charity,” Shanahan reflected.
“There’s not a single player in Toronto Maple Leafs history that has done more appearances or more charity events and charity work than Johnny Bower. “

Friends and Leafs alumni echoed Shanahan’s speech on Wednesday. Wendel Clark, iconic ex-Leaf himself, paid tribute to Bower at the goaltender’s flower-strewn bronze replica on Legends Row
Clark, like Shanahan, recalled Bower’s tireless community work.
“He’d come out with the most energy. He’d be there full force, early in the morning or late at night,” Clark said, referring to Bower as the “greatest Leaf” both in and out of uniform.
Hersh Borenstein, a family friend who collects hockey memorabilia, agreed. “They don’t make ’em like Johnny anymore,” he said, remembering the man who became his “surrogate grandfather.”

Borenstein got a call from Bower’s daughter when he first fell ill. “She said if he lives through the day he’s going to be a different person coming out. He never got better.”
The next call from the Bower family informed Borenstein of the loss of his mentor. He responded with stunned silence.
Bower’s friend, like countless others who knew him, recalled a man so selfless he would do anything for a fan, neighbour or loved one, from endless photos with strangers to shovelling the family driveway with a cracked rib.
Even though he led the Leafs to glory, Bower will be remembered for much more, said his friend.
“I never saw him play,” Borenstein said. “Most people didn’t. He was a legend off the ice.”

The death of Hockey Hall of Famer Johnny Bower has unleashed a flood of tributes from within the hockey world and beyond.
The Toronto Maple Leafs legend died on Tuesday after a short battle with pneumonia, according to a statement from his family. He was 93.
Players past and present, the NHL, the Leafs organization and many others shared their condolences and stories about the impact Bower had on them after hearing the news of his death.
“There may not be a more loved Toronto Maple Leaf nor a former player who loved them as much back,” Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan said in a statement.
“Johnny was beloved by so many for much more than his Hall of Fame credentials as a player,” added Shanahan, who was scheduled to address the media on Wednesday morning outside the Air Canada Centre.
“It was his generosity of spirit, kindness and passion for people that made him a legend at life. The Toronto Maple Leafs, and our fans, are deeply indebted to Johnny for all that he gave to us, and taught us over the years. We will miss him dearly, but we know that his presence will forever be felt by our club and our city.”
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Bower, who became nicknamed The China Wall for his daring play in net, was admired by everyone.
“There is so much to appreciate in Johnny Bower’s accomplishments on the ice — including the four Stanley Cups and membership in the Hockey Hall of Fame — and yet there was so much more to the man who served his sport, his country, and his community with such distinction,” said Bettman.

“Johnny Bower enriched us all by sharing the pure joy he felt for the game he played and for the men who played it, with him and against him. It was a personal privilege to know him, a delight to be in his presence and an honour to celebrate him as one of the 100 greatest players in NHL history.”
Fellow Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour tweeted: “Heartbroken to hear of the passing of Johnny Bower. Honoured to have known this Maple Leaf Icon. Legend. .RIPJohnnyBower.”
Former Leafs goaltender Curtis Joseph posted a photo of himself alongside Bower on social media.
“Saddened to hear of the passing of Leaf legend Johnny Bower! Loved him as a goalie, loved him as a person!,” Joseph tweeted with the photo.
Toronto forward Nazem Kadri was among some current players who also took to Twitter to express their condolences.
“One of the classiest guys I have ever been around. Always had time for the fans and the city of Toronto. Rest in peace Johnny .1,” he tweeted.

“Always loved talking to Mr Bower, one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met, Hockey world lost a great,” added Florida Panthers goalie James Reimer through his wife April’s Twitter account.
Former Canadian women’s national team star Cassie Campbell tweeted that “Johnny Bower was such a kind man.
“Thanks for all you did for hockey and for always standing up for the women’s game too. Amazing individual who made everyone feel like they were his best friend. .RIP,” Campbell added.

Bower turned pro with the American Hockey League’s Cleveland Barons in 1945. He played eight seasons in the AHL before getting a chance in the NHL. Bower’s career took off after the Leafs claimed him in a 1958 intra-league draft. The Prince Albert, Sask. product went on to play 475 regular-season games and win four Stanley Cups for the Leafs, plying his trade mostly without a mask.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976. Toronto paid tribute to him with a commemorative banner in 1995 that still flies high at the Air Canada Centre, and his old AHL team in Cleveland retired his No. 1 in 2002.
“Johnny Bower was a Hall of Fame goaltender and a Hall of Fame gentleman who defined excellence and perseverance and never forgot his roots in the American Hockey League,” said AHL president and CEO David Andrews.
“We join the entire hockey world in mourning his passing and celebrating his legacy, and we offer our deepest condolences to his wife Nancy and his entire family.”
Toronto mayor John Tory issued a statement saying he looked up to Bower as a child.
“I am heartbroken to see Johnny Bower passed away. He stood in there, as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ greatest goalie, and helped them win four Stanley Cups. He was a boyhood hero of mine, as he was for many across Canada. And long after his retirement he was a great ambassador for the Leafs and for Toronto. He will be missed by all Leafs fans and by a grateful city.
“On behalf of all Toronto residents, I want to express my condolences to his family, teammates, and friends.”
Upon retirement in 1970, Bower joined the Leafs front office as a scout and coach, a position he held for 20 years until becoming the team’s goodwill ambassador in 1990.
Bower leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Nancy, his three children John Jr., Cindy and Barbara, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Johnny Bower, it seems, touched a lot of hearts in 93 years.
An outpouring of love and sympathy was tangible Tuesday night as friends and fans alike commented the retired Leafs’ goaltender’s legacy.
Toronto Mayor John Tory commented on Bower’s death shortly after his family released a statement.
“He was a boyhood hero of mine, as he was for many across Canada. And long after his retirement he was a great ambassador for the Leafs and for Toronto. He will be missed by all Leafs fans and by a grateful city,” Tory said on Tuesday.

Former Liberal MP Bob Rae told CBC Toronto that he got to know Bower in the ’90s on the charity golf circuit.
“Like every Leafs fan in the ’60s, I idolized Johnny,” Rae said. “He was a delightful guy, very open, funny, and humble. I came to admire him more as I saw how warm and patient he was with fans, and how much he enjoyed being with people and making them feel good about themselves.
“He had a natural quality with people that was quite remarkable and I shall always remember.”
On Legend’s Row outside the Air Canada Centre, an immortalized Bower stands eternally at the ready, the Maple Leaf etched onto his chest. Bower remained a Leafs fan throughout his life, even making regular appearances at farm-team games, according to one passer-by, who noted Bower’s propensity for a good-natured ribbing of rival fans.
“Here’s Johnny’s sense of humour,” recalled Leafs fan Neil Townsend, who met the goaltender several times. At one of those meetings, he brought a friend, who wore “a Habs jersey because she’s a lifelong fan,” Townsend said.
When Bower caught a glimpse of the offending jersey, “The first thing Johnny said was, ‘Oh look, a dartboard,'” Townsend laughed.
Townsend echoes other mourners in recounting Bower’s kind nature. “He was like everyone’s favourite grandpa. He was a Canadian icon.”

Leafs past and current chimed in on Bower’s legacy. Ex-goaltender James Reimer, through his partner’s Twitter account, called Bower “one of the most genuine people” he’d ever met.
Ex-forward and tough guy Darcy Tucker, meanwhile, remembered Bower as kind and humble.
But Bower’s old teammate, Dick Duff, knew the late netminder more intimately and described Bower’s dedication in an interview with CBC Toronto.
“He’d stay on the ice forever,” Duff said, noting that Bower would stop dozens of shots in a typical practice without even so much as a mask. “These guys had blue, black and yellow marks from on them September until next August, and then it would start again.”
Duff says it was partially Bower’s arrival on the Leafs’ roster than led to four Stanley Cup wins in just over a decade.
“John was one of the additions who made our team really strong,” Duff said. “We’re trying to catch up with Montreal and we’re trying to catch up with Detroit. They were the best teams in those days.”

Leafs’ president Brendan Shanahan also issued a statement shortly after Bower’s death was announced.
“Johnny was beloved by so many for much more than his Hall of Fame credentials as a player,” Shanahan wrote. “It was his generosity of spirit, kindness and passion for people that made him a legend at life.
“Our deepest sympathies and gratitude go to Nancy, their children and the entire Bower family for sharing their husband, father and grandfather with us for so many years,” he continued.
“There may not be a more loved Toronto Maple Leaf nor a former player who loved them as much back.”

]]>The 93-year-old was battling pneumonia, according to a statement from his family.
Remembered by many for his brave play on the ice and his gracious demeanour off it, Bower got his start in the National Hockey League at an age when many players would be considering retirement.
Becoming a professional athlete at 35 is practically unheard of, but it serves as a testament to the hard work and perseverance that “No. 1” demonstrated throughout his life.
The Toronto Maple Leafs legend, Hockey Hall of Famer and two-time Vezina Trophy winner toiled in the American Hockey League for 13 seasons before earning a permanent spot in 1958 as the Leafs’ goaltender.
Originally named John Kiszkan, he was born the only boy of nine children on Nov. 8, 1924, and came of age in Prince Albert, Sask., during the Great Depression.
He was self taught, playing in pickup games on ponds using a crooked tree branch as a stick and old mattresses as makeshift goalie pads.
“When I was a little guy we had nothing at all,” Bower once said. “But the ambition that I had as a kid was to play hockey as long as I could because it was always my dream to have my name engraved on the Stanley Cup.”

When the Second World War broke out, Bower demonstrated a self sacrifice that would carry through the rest of his life. Though just 15, he lied about his age to enlist and was sent to serve in England, where he would spend the next four years.
He was discharged in 1944 because of rheumatoid arthritis and returned to Prince Albert to pick up his hockey dream, beginning his career with the Blackhawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
It didn’t take long for Bower to catch the attention of scouts from the American Hockey League, and in 1945 the Cleveland Barons offered the 21-year-old his first professional contract.
I just can’t explain the feelings of winning the Cup that you have inside you. You’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, I finally did it after all these years.’– Johnny Bower
He spent eight years in the AHL, regularly winning more games than he lost, but jobs in the NHL were hard to come by.
“There were only six goalies in the NHL at the time. I couldn’t beat them; at least I thought I couldn’t. I still didn’t give up. I just kept working,” Bower said.
In 1953 he got his shot, joining the New York Rangers and playing all 70 games. However, the following season he was displaced by Lorne (Gump) Worsley and spent most of the next five years in the minors.
Undaunted, Bower continued to work toward his Stanley Cup goal with extraordinary play in the AHL, where he still holds the record for most shutouts at 45 and most wins with 359 in 592 games.
“They nicknamed him China Wall down there because no one could get by him,” former teammate Frank Mahovlich said in a television interview.
In the summer of 1958, the Toronto Maple Leafs claimed Bower in the intra-league draft, hoping he could shore up a weak team while they developed their younger players who would eventually form the core of a championship team.
“Here I was, 35 years old and even though I didn’t give up, I said, ‘I can’t help Toronto,'” Bower said. “It was my wife Nancy who told me, ‘You had a childhood dream and it’s your opportunity to go. If you don’t make it, you don’t make it.'”
Despite his initial hesitation, it was under the spotlight at Maple Leaf Gardens that he would thrive and become a legend to the fans in Toronto and the hockey community at large.

The experience he gained in New York seemed to make a difference the second time around. Bower’s poke-check threatened any player who dared to attempt crashing Toronto’s net.
Arguably one the best goalies in the history of the franchise, he handled the puck with skill and became known as a superior standup goalie. He was always the oldest member on the team and was the oldest in the league for his final 10 seasons, but his play showed no indication of his age.
The late Jean Beliveau always said Bower was the goaltender who gave him the most trouble.
Bower helped turn the Leafs around in 1958, leading the previous season’s last-place club to an unlikely Stanley Cup final. They lost to the Montreal Canadiens in five games, but Bower’s dream now seemed to be just a matter of time.
Two years later he won his first Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goalie by racking up 33 wins, the most of any goalie in the 1960-61 season. The following season Bower won his first Stanley Cup — the first of three in a row for the Leafs — and posted some of the best playoff numbers of his career.
Like many players, Bower considered the first cup the sweetest.
“I had that dream from day one to have my name on the Stanley Cup,” Bower said. “I just can’t explain the feelings that you have inside you. You’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, I finally did it after all these years.'”
Not satisfied to rest on those Stanley Cup laurels, Bower continued to stand strong, playing through failing vision and problems with his hands.
In 1964, after their third Stanley Cup in a row, the Leafs decided to go with two goaltenders, adding all-star Terry Sawchuk to the lineup. Bower, though, didn’t balk at the competition and the two went on to share the Vezina Trophy that season.
By the 1966-67 season, having not won a cup in two seasons and with eight players aged 35 or older, the Leafs were considered an over-the-hill gang.
However, a 42-year-old Bower and 35-year-old Sawchuk had one more championship in them, leading the Leafs to their fourth championship of the decade.
“[Bower was] just a great guy. The wonderful thing about this game of hockey is that it rewards so many great guys that give their heart and soul and their life to it,” former NHLer and broadcaster Howie Meeker once said.
With his name engraved on the Stanley Cup four times, Bower retired at 45 after playing one game in the 1969-70 season. He was the oldest goalie ever to play in the NHL.
Bower’s professional playing career may have ended, but his passion for the game never wavered. After 24 years playing hockey in the minors and the NHL, Bower joined the Leafs organization as a goalie coach and scout.
In 1976, he was recognized with the ultimate honour.
“When they notified me that I was inducted in the Hall of Fame, I thought they made a mistake or something,” Bower said. “It’s right up there with winning the Stanley Cup to me.”
A Maple Leaf through and through, he continued to work for the club until he was 65. He finally stepped away in 1990, ending a 32-year run with Toronto.
His presence, though, remained in the community long after his retirement. Bower made it a point to participate in as many charitable activities and public appearances as possible.
“I love going out and helping out people,” he said. “I always make time to help everyone else out. That’s the way I was taught. I didn’t have anything, so I figured I don’t want to see anyone else that way.
“It’s about helping each other. I like doing that and meeting fans in Toronto. There are great fans in Toronto. No matter where you go, you get an ovation and people still recognize you.”

Laurie Davidson, who plays the young bard, will be seen getting saucy in the racy period drama.
The sexier retelling of the playwright’s life on US network TNT has received scathing reviews for its “nonsensical creative decisions” so far, but it has shocked viewers with its latest episode.
Marlowe (played by Jamie Campbell Bower) was the poet’s biggest competitor at the time during the 16th Century, but the pair were also friends.
Already a part of London’s social elite, Marlowe gave Shakespeare a cheeky taste of what’s to come in a trailer for the episode.
“Prepare thyself,” he says in the teaser video, as Shakespeare asks: “For what?”
“The unknowable,” responds Marlowe ominously.
Stills from the shocking episode show Shakespeare looking lost among three naked figures portraying immense reckless abandon.
One shot shows a sexy female dressed all in black grasping her perfectly manicured nails around an unknown man’s naked pert behind.
There were also images of a naked woman painted in shimmering gold floral designs having sex with another inked man displaying an intensely violent expression.
In an interview introducing the scene, Bower said that the party, thrown by famed philosopher Sir Francis Bacon, was also attended by Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth’s head astrologer John Dee.
“It may seem strange to us today but these brilliant thinkers love to dabble in both science and the dark arts.
“What happens when you mix an astrologer dabbling in the occult, two of the most brilliant minds in literary history and a raging orgy?” he smirked.
The episode sees the sumptuous gathering take a dark turn when Shakespeare participates in Dee’s divination ritual.
Will continues July 31 on TNT.
