Cultural appropriation and an identity crisis take center stage in Tuesday’s Season 2 premiere of mixed-ish. Johan was called a “really bad name” at school which, according to Rainbow, is so horrible, it doesn’t bear repeating. Paul and Alicia assume it’s that word and immediately try to comfort their son until they realize they’re dealing with an entirely different racial slur: beaner. Some of the kids at school think Johan is Mexican, and he hasn’t corrected them. For Johan, it was easier not to say anything to his friends, since they assumed he wasn’t Black. Rainbow is upset that he’s been lying about his identity, while Santamonica is perfectly fine with it because she pretends to be different people all the time. Johan’s revelation brings up an important issue: Did Paul and Alicia’s colorblind parenting while on the commune make him ashamed of his heritage? In an attempt to encourage their kids to be proud of their Blackness, Paul and Alicia gather the family to watch The Color Purple (but definitely not because someone else had already rented Roots). The plan backfires, however, and the kids have some troubling takeaways: Johan thinks the film says the world hates Black people, while Santamonica wonders if the lesson is that kids can be easily taken from their moms. Another issue arises when Johan reveals that he was called the racial slur by another Black kid. Confused as to why another Black kid wouldn’t know their son is Black, Alicia realizes her experience is different from her kids, who are mixed. At the end of the episode, Rainbow confronts her brother for lying about his identity and accuses him of being ashamed of his Blackness. Johan explains that he’s not ashamed but tired of the constant questions about his heritage. Rainbow also deals with those annoying questions but doesn’t let them get to her. “It’s not my job to make other people feel comfortable and it’s not your job either,” she tells Johan. “And if anyone has a problem with that, I will always have your back.” Johan hears her loud and clear, putting this week’s issue to bed. In The Mailbag: Shaun K writes in:
“Hello Peter and the gang, I have a question about film festivals. My wife and I love going to the movies together. I’d list our bonafides but you don’t care about that stuff and it’d just be a thinly veiled list designed to culminate in the fact that we had an awesome wedding in an art house theater. Oh darn, look at that, it slipped in there. Anyway, every year we try to take a vacation, last year it was Disney, this year was Ireland but I’ve had an idea to try to go to one of the bigger cooler film festivals. The problem with that though is that I really know nothing about them. I see a lot of headlines and early reviews coming out of things like Sundance and TIFF and South By but I really have no clue on how one goes about getting tickets to such a thing or if you have to be a working media member or anything. So I’m looking for your opinions on the best festivals that we could go to as just fans of films. We aren’t looking to necessarily see the next Un Chien Andalou so nothing too crazy artsy. Now one small caveat to this is that my wife is a teacher so our only real window to go to one of these festivals is in the summer. Also, we live in Philly so if there’s anything that doesn’t require a cross-country flight that’d be great too. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. I love the podcast and the website, thanks so much for the hours of entertainment and information.”

When Daniel Craig became James Bond in 2006’s Casino Royale, the gritty spy thriller was a far cry from the franchise’s last outing Die Another Die.
Brosnan had bowed out in 2002 with a camp, silly affair involving an invisible car and cheesy one-liners.
That same year the first Jason Bourne movie was released, a much more serious take on the spook genre.
And its films like these that Brosnan now blames not only for his contract ending as Bond but the franchise’s current lack of humour.
Speaking with The Rake, the 65-year-old actor said: “I knew there had been a seismic shift [with films like The Bourne Identity], and little did I know I was going to be part of that in the curtain falling on my contract.
“I knew they had to make adjustments. They had strong competition and they haven’t reinvented it, but given it a much more muscular, dynamic twist.
“When I played [Bond], you have to let the audience in that this is a fantastic joke.
“What I am doing here, jumping off a motorcycle and catching up a plane, is completely preposterous.”
Back in June Brosnan admitted that apart from Goldeneye, his Bond was never good enough.
Speaking with Daily Mail, he said: “I was caught between Sean Connery’s Bond and Roger Moore’s Bond, and it was only really in GoldenEye that I did my Bond.”
The 65-year-old also explained how he had “issues for many years” having been dropped from the role, after 2002’s Die Another Day, by a teary Barbara Broccoli over the phone.
Nevertheless he’s much more positive about his time as 007 sixteen years since he left the role.
Brosnan added: “Now I just have great feelings about Bond.
“I loved the irony of being an Irishman playing this quintessential English character. I love what it did for me as an actor.”
The Bourne film series may have come to outstay its welcome today, but 15 years ago, The Bourne Identity was a plucky spy thriller starring a rising dramatic actor making his first venture into the action genre.
Without high expectations for the film, director Doug Liman and star Matt Damon debated giving The Bourne Identity a dramatic twist — by killing off its title character at the end of the film. Clearly, that did not happen, and Jason Bourne went on to become the quintessential cinematic spy of the 21st century.
Liman revealed in an interview with Uproxx that The Bourne Identity series was nearly a single film.
“Matt Damon and I talked about killing Jason Bourne at the end of The Bourne Identity. We were like no one will see that coming! And obviously, we decided not to do that.”
Liman elaborated that the decision was less about the possibility of sequels than it was to provide a “satisfying ending” for the viewers.
Yes, Jason Bourne almost died at the end of The Bourne Identity — which would have likely put an end to the series that would eventually give way to Paul Greengrass’ The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Jason Bourne, as well as Tony Gilroy’s spin-off The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner. While Greengrass was the director who became synonymous with the series — popularizing the franchise’s frenetic shaky-cam action choreography — it was Liman who kicked off the spy series with the gritty, hard-edged The Bourne Identity.
The influence of The Bourne Identity‘s fast-paced brutality would be felt through established spy series like James Bond (whose series got a Bourne makeover with Casino Royale), cynical ex-CIA movies like Taken, and the thousands of new action thrillers starring twenty-something wunderkinds like Dylan O’Brien or Taylor Lautner. But the relatively happy ending of The Bourne Identity (which was immediately ripped out of our hands at the beginning of Supremacy) kept the series from being too cynical, even as blockbusters became increasingly dark and disillusioned. Who knows what killing off the amiable Matt Damon at the end of that film would’ve done to our cinematic landscape?
At this point, however, death seems like it would be a sweet mercy for the Bourne franchise, which has definitely gone on for two movies too long. The Bourne Legacy was an ill-fated attempt to launch a “new generation” franchise, while Damon’s halfhearted return to the franchise in last year’s Jason Bourne was just plain dull. Killing off Jason Bourne now wouldn’t have the same impact it would have if done in The Bourne Identity, but maybe it could finally bring some sort of “satisfying ending” to the audience.

Matt Damon isn’t off to a strong start this year with The Great Wall pulling in just over $ 42 million at the domestic box office so far. At the same time, the movie has been doing huge business internationally, with nearly $ 279 million from other territories around the world. But if you think that the lack of box office love in the United States will have Matt Damon going back to the well for more Jason Bourne, think again.
Matt Damon is still making publicity rounds for The Great Wall, and in a recent interview, discussion turned to the future of the Jason Bourne franchise, or rather lack thereof. It doesn’t sound like Bourne 5 will come together unless some kind of mind-blowing story comes along.
Speaking with The Toronto Sun, Damon was asked whether her would come back as the deadly assassin Jason Bourne anytime in the future. Damon simply said:
“It would have to be a pretty incredible story to get us all back on the horse.”
Getting Matt Damon back with director Paul Greengrass sounded like it was going to be fairly impossible following the end of The Bourne Ultimatum, but when the spin-off The Bourne Legacy didn’t perform as well as Universal hoped, the studio knew they needed to get the dream team back.
Damon and Greengrass had previously said the only way they would return was if it was a story that demanded bringing Jason Bourne back into action. While last year’s Jason Bourne was a serviceable and mostly enjoyable sequel, the story didn’t feel like it was begging to be told. In fact, incorporating Jason Bourne’s father into the fray made the sequel feel even more tacked-on than I thought it would. The action setpieces delivered, but otherwise, it was totally forgettable, lacking justification for ruining what would have been a perfectly satisfying ending to the franchise back in 2007.
Jason Bourne did pretty well at the box office by pulling in $ 162 million domestically and another $ 253 million worldwide, but the reception from critics and fans was quite middling. Over at Rotten Tomatoes it has a score of 57%. Before you think that this is one of those situations where general audiences disagree with them, the user score for Jason Bourne is actually slightly less at 56%. This isn’t lost on Matt Damon who also said:
“This last one didn’t do as well as the one we did 10 years ago, so maybe people are done with the character.”

But if you happened to enjoy Jason Bourne, or maybe you’re just hoping the character will get a more proper send-off instead of ending with the most recent installment, Matt Damon isn’t flat out saying no to another round. Damon offered some hope, “I think everybody is leaving the door open, as we did at the end of this movie, in hopes that we can come up with an intriguing story for the next one.”
While I’d be happy if Damon and Greengrass were able to give Jason Bourne a better ending, I’m hoping they don’t rush and make it happen soon. Perhaps we should wait until Damon gets a little older and then give Bourne a send-off in the same vein as Hugh Jackman as Logan. That’s something that I could get on board with. How about you?
