Whale-watching is not without its perils, as tourists aboard an Australian sightseeing ship discovered when they were drenched by an enormous leaping leviathan that came incredibly close to crushing their boat.

Cruising for marine animals off the coast of Port Macquarie, the tourists certainly got their money’s worth when a massive humpback whale rose from the sea, creating a huge wave.

Footage of the incident has been posted on Facebook by Port Jet Cruise Adventures, the company that ferries spectators around the area, showing how the leaping mammal almost fell on top of the vessel. Luckily enough, nobody was hurt and the splashdown just soaked the stunned tourists.

“Some amazing footage captured by Tash Morton on this afternoon’s whale watch,” the tour company said. “Wave Rider got a wash.”

One social-media user commented under the online video to say she was on the ship at the time. “It was so awesome. I’m at the front of the water splash,” she said.

“I’m still trying to pick my jaw up off the ground. That was insane,” another Facebook user wrote.

Port Macquarie is famous for its whale-watching, with many marine buffs travelling there to catch a glimpse of some incredible creatures.

Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy are both part of blockbuster franchises. While Vikander has Tomb Raider coming up, she also appeared in Jason Bourne not too long ago. Meanwhile, McAvoy will play Professor X for the fourth time in the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix and he’s also reprising his role as The Horde in Glass, a sequel to both Split and Unbreakable. But the two took time out of their schedule to make a more quiet, subdued film from director Wim Wenders.

Submergence follows Danielle Flinders (Vikander) and James More (McAvoy) as they meet in a Normandy hotel, falling for each other romantically before they go off on two very different missions. The distance between them will be great (there’s a literal ocean between them), but their love may be enough to keep them going.

The trailer doesn’t make it entirely clear how this story unfolds, but the official synopsis explains it much more clearly:

Danielle Flinders (Alicia Vikander) and James More (James McAvoy) meet by chance in a remote hotel in Normandy where they both prepare for a dangerous mission. They fall in love almost against their will, but soon recognize in each other the love of their lives. When they have to separate, we find out that James works for the British Secret Service. He’s involved in a mission in Somalia to track down a source for suicide bombers infiltrating Europe. Danielle ‘Danny’ Flinders is a bio-mathematician working on a deep sea diving project to support her theory about the origin of life on our planet. Soon, they are worlds apart. James is taken hostage by Jihadist fighters and has no way of contacting Danny, and she has to go down to the bottom of the ocean in her submersible, not even knowing if James is still alive.

So the story appears to be about how much one can endure with only the memory of love to keep them going. Each character finds themselves isolated from the rest of the world in two differently dangerous situations as they recall the moment they met. It looks like an intimate, intense story about the power of love as only director Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas, The Million Dollar Hotel) can deliver. But is it any good?

Submergence already played at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and Kate Erbland at IndieWire was not impressed. She wrote, “The film revels in playing up hinky parallels that rarely coalesce into anything of much substance.” But she did admit that there’s somewhat of saving grace as “Submergence is only bolstered by a pair of sterling performances from stars Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy, both of whom somehow rise above the lackluster film they’re sunk into.”

The film is based on J.M. Ledgard‘s novel of the same name, adapted by Erin Dignam, and the rest of the cast includes Alexander Siddig, Celyn Jones, and Reda Kateb. Sumbergence hits theaters in the United States starting on April 13, 2018.

President Donald Trump told the New York Times on Wednesday that he felt it would cross a line if special counsel Robert Mueller began to examine his business dealings as part of the probe into possible collusion between his campaign team and Russia.

“I think that’s a violation,” Trump said. “Look, this is about Russia.”

In appointing Mueller, however, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein gave him broad authority not only to investigate “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated” with Trump’s campaign, but also to examine “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”

Rosenstein also gave Mueller the power to investigate “any other matters within the scope of 28 C.F.R. § 600.4(a)” — including perjury, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, and intimidation of witnesses.

The mandate’s scope is similar to that given by then-Acting Attorney General James Comey to special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald in 2003 to investigate who leaked the identity of former CIA operative Valerie Plame.

Trump has reportedly grown irritated with the follow-the-money approach Mueller has taken to the investigation. But it is easy to imagine why Trump’s loans, debts, and business empire — which has benefited from money flowing out of Russia — would warrant Mueller’s scrutiny as he tries to trace the origins of Russia’s interest in the Trump campaign and determine whether Moscow holds any leverage over Trump or his associates.

“If we got a report that Mueller was investigating, say, the Trump University fraud case, that would signal that this is a roaming investigation with an axe to grind,” said Andy Wright, a constitutional law expert and professor at Savannah Law School. “But everything we’ve seen so far in terms of what Mueller is looking at has had a nexus to the Russia investigation.”

According to Bloomberg, the FBI is examining Russian purchases of Trump properties, Trump’s relationship with a real estate company co-founded by a Russian-American businessman (who stands accused of using the firm to commit fraud), and Trump’s sale of a Florida mansion to a Russian oligarch in 2008.

His negotiations to bring the Miss Universe pageant to Moscow in 2013 — and his meeting with a group of Russian oligarchs while he was there — are also under scrutiny, along with the Trump family’s bank of choice, Deutsche Bank.

Deutsche Bank was fined earlier this year as part of a Russian money-laundering scheme that involved its Moscow, New York, and London branches. The bank refused in June to hand over documents requested by five Democratic lawmakers related to the bank’s relationship with Trump, citing the confidentiality of nonpublic customer information. But the FBI is likely to get ahold of them.

Wright noted that if Mueller wanted to stray widely outside the bounds of the Russia investigation — as Kenneth Starr did with the Whitewater investigation, which eventually turned into a probe of former President Bill Clinton’s relationship with Monica Lewinsky — he would have to go back and ask a judge to authorize an expansion of the original mandate.

“If the president has objections, he has to raise it with Rosenstein showing chapter and verse why the nexus isn’t met” with regard to the path of Mueller’s investigation, Wright said.

Mueller has shown no signs of veering outside the terms of his appointment, said Asha Rangappa, an associate dean at Yale Law School and former FBI special agent. But even if Mueller came across something potentially criminal that was beyond his scope, “it’s not like he can just walk away from it.”

“He would have to hand it off to Wray and the rest of the FBI,” Rangappa said, referring to Comey’s prospective replacement Christopher Wray. “They can’t just ignore these things.”

Trump has reportedly become so disturbed by the path Mueller’s investigation seems to be going down that he and his legal team are searching for ways to discredit and possibly fire him.

But experts say there is no evidence that Mueller has engaged in any inappropriate behavior that would warrant his removal. And while Trump could order Mueller’s dismissal, he could not fire him directly unless he ordered the repeal of the special-counsel regulations adopted in 1999, according to Neal Katyal, a former acting solicitor general who helped draft them.

That would be an “extravagant” move, Katyal wrote in May. But Matt Miller, a Justice Department spokesman under President Barack Obama, said he realized after Trump fired Comey that “we all need to expand our imagination about what [Trump] might do to stop this investigation.”

“I think it’s clear that he will not let this investigation run its natural course without interfering in some fashion, and that is going to provoke a massive crisis for his presidency and the country,” Miller said. “These leaks are probably the product of a lot of things, but one of them is Trump testing the boundaries of what he can get away with.”

Specifically, it has added Chaperone-like “Protector” bounds, which help prevent you from walking into walls and furniture, as well as a new home screen for easily booting up software.

Digital boundaries, called Chaperone in the HTC Vive headset, and Guardian on the Oculus Rift, are an important addition to a VR headset, especially when it comes to room-scale movement. They provide a reminder of the physical limitations of your real-world space, without breaking immersion too much.

Announced at the Games Developer Conference, the OSVR’s new Protector boundaries were added by VR hardware developer, Sensics.

“An initial setup allows the user to define the safe play area,” Sensics said (via Toms Hardware). “The system then continuously monitors the user’s head and arm positions (using any available OSVR-supported sensors) and presents a warning grid when the edge of the play area is approached.”

Although it will work with the OSVR HDK2 headset that’s already available, Sensics claims that Protector should work with a number of OSVR supporting headsets. It operates as its own independent application that works alongside and as part of any other VR app that’s launched. It should work with small room spaces as well as much larger ones, we’re told.

In a similar manner to the HTC Vive’s Chaperone options, OSVR’s new Protector system can also can fade in a front-mounted camera feed, instead of using grid boundaries.

Alongside Protector, Sensics Home Suite also introduces a new Home Screen that acts as a launch hub for VR software. Visually, it’s an ocean facing a living room of sorts. It gives you an in-VR place to open applications, install new apps, receive notifications from apps and other users, and more.

More commercially, Home Suite also introduces ads and sponsorships, so there’s the possibility that future iterations will see certain brands heading up particular sections of the Home Suite. They can be targeted to geographic location and user preferences, we’re told.

Perhaps somewhat invasively, Home Suite ads may also leverage heat-mapping to know just where users are looking so it can put ads right in your field of view.
