Twitter and Meta found an influence network promoting US interests.

  • Fewer than 5% of monetizable user accounts on Twitter are controlled by bots, according to digital intelligence provider Similarweb.
  • But bots still account for around 21%-29% of US content on Twitter.
  • Elon Musk has been hedging on his deal to buy Twitter due to concerns of the number of spam bots on Twitter.

Since July, Elon Musk has been having second thoughts about his decision to buy Twitter, leading up to his intention to quash the $ 44 billion deal. One of his concerns, he says, is the number of spam "bots" running rampant on the platform.

Musk says he believes that bots comprise upwards of 20% of accounts on Twitter.

Twitter, meanwhile, says that the number of bots on the platform is marginal — less than 5%.

Research published Thursday by the digital intelligence provider Similarweb seems to corroborate Twitter's claims — even though the amount of tweets generated by those bots may make it appear otherwise.

Bots are automated accounts that help drive traffic on Twitter. They operate just like accounts controlled by human users— retweeting posts, liking posts, and following other accounts.

Bots affect a metric known as mDAU, or monetized daily active users. However, the more bots there are, the fewer actual, human mDAUs there are. Ultimately, advertisers, marketing agencies, and companies want to reach real humans.

In Similarweb's study, the method wasn't to find the ratio of bots but to instead estimate the number of real human users, according to the company's CTO Ron Asher.

He added that "in a nutshell" Similarweb's data supports the finding that Twitter's estimates are reasonable.

Yet the study also found a grain of truth in Musk's claims.

Similarweb reported that 20%-29% of content in the US on Twitter is generated by bots. The study also found that only 19% of real, authenticated Twitter users in the US generate content everyday.

Similarweb noted that "not all bots are evil" — but some can pose serious threats.

"The issue is more with bots that evade that officially sanctioned path, faking human interaction. Often, they do this so they can artificially inflate sentiment for and against stocks, products, politicians, or causes," Similarweb noted. "Twitter says it tries to identify and eliminate as many of these frauds as possible but admits those countermeasures are not perfect."

The only ‘Russian bots’ to meddle in US elections belonged to Democrat-linked ‘experts’ https://briefnews.eu/the-only-russian-bots-to-meddle-in-us-elections-belonged-to-democrat-linked-experts/ https://briefnews.eu/the-only-russian-bots-to-meddle-in-us-elections-belonged-to-democrat-linked-experts/#respond Fri, 28 Dec 2018 20:01:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-only-russian-bots-to-meddle-in-us-elections-belonged-to-democrat-linked-experts/

US cyber-security experts have blamed Russia for meddling in American elections since 2016. Now it has emerged that authors of a Senate report on ‘Russian’ meddling actually ran a “false flag” meddling operation themselves.

A week before Christmas, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report accusing Russia of depressing Democrat voter turnout by targeting African-Americans on social media. Its authors, New Knowledge, quickly became a household name.

Described by the New York Times as a group of “tech specialists who lean Democratic,” New Knowledge has ties to both the US military and intelligence agencies. Its CEO and co-founder Jonathon Morgan previously worked for DARPA, the US military’s advanced research agency. His partner, Ryan Fox, is a 15-year veteran of the National Security Agency who also worked as a computer analyst for the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). Their unique skill sets have managed to attract the eye of investors, who pumped $ 11 million into the company in 2018 alone.

Morgan and Fox have struck gold in the “Russiagate” racket, which sprung into being after Hillary Clinton blamed Moscow for Donald Trump’s presidential victory in 2016. Morgan, for example, is one of the developers of the Hamilton 68 Dashboard, the online tool that purports to monitor and expose narratives being pushed by the Kremlin on Twitter. The dashboard is bankrolled by the German Marshall Fund’s Alliance for Securing Democracy – a collection of Democrats and neoconservatives funded in part by NATO and USAID.

It is worth noting that the 600 “Russia-linked” Twitter accounts monitored by the dashboard are not disclosed to the public, making it impossible to verify its claims. This inconvenience has not stopped Hamilton 68 from becoming a go-to source for hysteria-hungry journalists, however.

Troll hunters or bot farm?

New Knowledge’s victory lap was short-lived. On December 19, a New York Times story revealed that Morgan and his crew had created a fake army of Russian bots, as well as fake Facebook groups, in order to discredit Republican candidate Roy Moore in Alabama’s 2017 special election for the US Senate.

Working on behalf of the Democrats, Morgan and his crew created an estimated 1,000 fake Twitter accounts with Russian names, and had them follow Moore. They also operated several Facebook pages where they posed as Alabama conservatives who wanted like-minded voters to support a write-in candidate instead.

In an internal memo, New Knowledge boasted that it had “orchestrated an elaborate ‘false flag’ operation that planted the idea that the Moore campaign was amplified on social media by a Russian botnet.”

It worked. The botnet claim made a splash on social media and was further amplified by Mother Jones, which based its story on expert opinion from Morgan’s other dubious creation, Hamilton 68.

Ultimately, Moore ended up losing the race by a miniscule 1.5 percentage points – making his opponent Doug Jones the first Democrat to represent Alabama in the US Senate in over 25 years.

Money trail and weak apologies

Things got even weirder when it turned out that Scott Shane, the author of the Times piece, had known about the meddling for months, because he spoke at an event where the organizers boasted about it!

Shane was one of the speakers at a meeting in September, organized by American Engagement Technologies, a group run by Mikey Dickerson, President Barack Obama’s former tech czar. Dickerson explained how AET spent $ 100,000 on New Knowledge’s campaign to suppress Republican votes, “enrage” Democrats to boost turnout, and execute a “false flag” to hurt Moore. He dubbed it “Project Birmingham.”

The money for the venture came from a $ 750,000 contribution to AET by Reid Hoffman, the billionaire co-founder of LinkedIn and a big Democrat donor. Once that emerged, Hoffman offered a public apology for his connection to the shady operation, but insisted that he didn’t know what his money was going towards.

“I find the tactics that have been recently reported highly disturbing,” Hoffman said in a statement.

“For that reason, I am embarrassed by my failure to track AET — the organization I did support — more diligently as it made its own decisions to perhaps fund projects that I would reject.”

As for Shane, he told BuzzFeed that he was “shocked” by the revelations, but had signed a nondisclosure agreement at the request of AET, so he could not talk about it further.

Spin and denial

Shane’s spin on the tale was that New Knowledge “imitated Russian tactics” as part of an “experiment” that had a budget of “only” $ 100,000 and had no effect on the election. Yet these tactics are only considered “Russian” because New Knowledge and similar outfits said so! Moreover, New Knowledge’s budget in Alabama was greater than the reported amount spent by “Russians” on the 2016 US presidential election, yet Moscow’s alleged meddling was supposed to be decisive, while New Knowledge’s failed?

New Knowledge responded to the Times story by insisting that the “false flag” operation was actually a benign research project. In a statement posted on Twitter, the company’s CEO claimed that its activities during the Alabama Senate race were conducted in order to “better understand and report on the tactics and effects of social media disinformation.”

Morgan emphasized that he in no way took part in an influence campaign, and warned people not to mischaracterize his “research.”

While the New York Times seemed satisfied with his explanation, others pointed out that Morgan had used the Hamilton 68 dashboard to give his “false flag” more credibility – misleading the public about a “Russian” influence campaign that he knew was fake.

New Knowledge’s protestations apparently didn’t convince Facebook, which announced last week that five accounts linked to New Knowledge – including Morgan’s – had been suspended  for engaging in “coordinated inauthentic behavior.”

Meddlers unmasked

The final nail in the coffin of Morgan’s story came on Thursday, when the leaked secret after-action report from “Project Birmingham” was published online, showing that those behind the Alabama campaign knew perfectly well what they were doing and why.

So, it turns out there really was meddling in American democracy by “Russian bots.” Except they weren’t run from Moscow or St. Petersburg, but from the offices of Democrat operatives chiefly responsible for creating and amplifying the “Russiagate” hysteria over the past two years in a textbook case of psychological projection.

Shortly after the 2016 election, newly elected President Donald Trump—peeved at losing the popular vote to Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton—falsely claimed he would have won the popular vote if not for the supposed votes of 3 million illegal immigrants. The lie spread rapidly across social media—far faster than factual attempts to debunk it. And Twitter bots played a disproportionate role in spreading that false information.

That’s according to a new study by researchers at Indiana University, published in Nature Communications. They examined 14 million messages shared on Twitter between May 2016 and May 2017, spanning the presidential primaries and Trump’s inauguration. And they found it took just six percent of Twitter accounts identified as bots to spread 31 percent of what they term “low-credibility” information on the social network. The bots managed this feat in just two to 10 seconds, thanks in large part to automated amplification.

Why are bots so effective at spreading false information? Study co-author Filippo Menczer attributes their success to so-called “social bias”: the human tendency to pay more attention to things that seem to be popular. Bots can create the appearance of popularity or that a certain opinion is more widely held than it actually is. “People tend to put greater trust in messages that appear to originate from many people,” said Menczer’s co-author, Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia. “Bots prey upon this trust by making messages seem so popular that real people are tricked into spreading their messages for them.”

Clinton bots more talkative & influential than Trump bots around 2016 debates, study finds https://briefnews.eu/clinton-bots-more-talkative-influential-than-trump-bots-around-2016-debates-study-finds/ https://briefnews.eu/clinton-bots-more-talkative-influential-than-trump-bots-around-2016-debates-study-finds/#respond Tue, 06 Nov 2018 08:46:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/clinton-bots-more-talkative-influential-than-trump-bots-around-2016-debates-study-finds/

While the popular narrative blames Clinton’s 2016 electoral loss on (Russian) bots, they actually helped her chances, according to a new study finding pro-Clinton bots were more effective at influencing voters than pro-Trump ones.

While there were almost twice as many pro-Trump bots in operation before the 2016 election, the pro-Clinton bots were much more likely to change people’s political opinions because they were much more active, MIT researcher Tauhid Zaman discovered.

Zaman analyzed 2.3 million tweets referencing the second presidential debate and found less than one percent of the accounts involved were bots. He measured the real users’ opinions using two models – one based on their tweets and one on their network of connections – and then remeasured without the inclusion of the bots in the networks. To his surprise (he’s a registered Democrat, according to a disclosure statement that accompanied the study) the average level of support for Clinton dropped from 58 to 42.

The Clinton bots, it turned out, were able to exercise such an outsize influence on their networks because they tweeted on average 1.5 times as often as the Trump bots. The content of the bots’ tweets was roughly the same – retweets of the candidates or other influential users – but the quantity of those retweets had a definite effect.

Zaman cautioned that the results could not be extrapolated to the entire voting population – the research only dealt with a short period of time surrounding the debates and studied a relatively small sample of Twitter users. Still, those in charge of social media “outreach” for candidates can learn a lot from this information – if you’re going to fake a following, fake an enthusiastic following!

While Zaman’s research showed Trump had a higher rate of support among bots, a 2015 analysis using the tool TwitterAudit found Clinton had more fake followers – 41 percent of her total Twitter fans.

‘Hello, Jack’: Iranian FM blasts Twitter for blocking real Iranians as ‘bots’ https://briefnews.eu/hello-jack-iranian-fm-blasts-twitter-for-blocking-real-iranians-as-bots/ https://briefnews.eu/hello-jack-iranian-fm-blasts-twitter-for-blocking-real-iranians-as-bots/#respond Mon, 17 Sep 2018 11:27:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hello-jack-iranian-fm-blasts-twitter-for-blocking-real-iranians-as-bots/ Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has accused Twitter of “shuttering” the accounts of Iranians after misidentifying them as ‘bots’ involved in influence campaigns.

“Twitter has shuttered accounts of real Iranians, including TV presenters and students, for supposedly being part of an ‘influence op,’” the minister wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

In his post, Zarif tagged Twitter CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey, suggesting that the tech giant should instead monitor “actual bots” used for “regime change” propaganda, unleashed against the Iranian government.

Last month, Twitter blocked nearly 300 accounts for “engaging in coordinated manipulation,” many of which, according to the company, “originated” from Iran.

Cybersecurity firm FireEye, which analyzed Iranian activity on the social media platform, claimed that Tehran used fake accounts to spread “anti-Saudi, anti-Israeli, and pro-Palestinian themes” among the US, British, Latin American and Middle Eastern audience. The fake accounts had also allegedly supported Iran’s stance on the 2015 nuclear deal or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, after President Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement in May.

Iran had denied all allegations of using covert information campaigns on social media. “Such claims are ridiculous and are part and parcel of US public calls for regime change in Iran, and are an abuse of social media platforms,” Alireza Miryousefi, spokesperson for the Iranian Mission to the UN, said in August.

At the same time, according to a report by Al Jazeera that was cited by Zarif, Twitter has many active users with few followers and generic profile pictures who tweet “almost exclusively in opposition” to the Iranian government and support the exiled opposition group, the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK).

Over the recent months, Twitter has been subject to scrutiny and criticism for the way it suspends users. US politicians blasted the company for not doing enough to stop the alleged ‘Russian disinformation campaign’ and hate speech, while conservative outlets and activists accused Twitter employees of having anti-conservative bias.

Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey denied any bias within the company, but admitted that Twitter had in the past been “terrible” at explaining its policies to the public.

Bots on Amazon’s task service may be souring psych studies https://briefnews.eu/bots-on-amazons-task-service-may-be-souring-psych-studies/ https://briefnews.eu/bots-on-amazons-task-service-may-be-souring-psych-studies/#respond Sun, 19 Aug 2018 03:06:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bots-on-amazons-task-service-may-be-souring-psych-studies/

It’s not uncommon for scientists to use Amazon’s Mechanical Turk for research — they can quickly gather survey data in return for a small outlay to participants. Academics are quickly discovering the limits of the task service with the modern bot-happy internet, however. Numerous psychology researchers have reported a sharp rise in the number of junk responses to their questions, many of which appear to come from bots. The offenders not only spam nonsensical answers to questions (such as “nice” or “good”), but tend to originate from the same location. And while anti-bot measures like captchas are in use, they aren’t always reliable.

There’s a chance that these could be people copying and pasting text, or using some form of automation to find the surveys (which Amazon allows). However, Amazon wouldn’t provide evidence one way or the other. The company told Wired in a statement that it had “automated and manual mechanisms” to fight bots, but it wouldn’t comment on bot activity levels or specific incidents.

Whatever the cause, the psychology study problems underscore deeper issues with Mechanical Turk. Bots are a reality on the service, and Amazon doesn’t always appear to acknowledge them even after multiple reports. And then there’s Mechanical Turk’s low per-task pay. While that can help scientists worried that large rewards could skew results, it encourages completing tasks en masse rather than providing high-quality answers. It may be increasingly difficult to conduct meaningful surveys on Amazon’s service, at least without tossing out many of the responses.
