3232What You Need To Know About The Latest SMAS Facelift Techniques
https://briefnews.eu/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-latest-smas-facelift-techniques/
https://briefnews.eu/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-latest-smas-facelift-techniques/#respondTue, 06 Aug 2019 08:37:25 +0000http://briefnews.eu/?p=254361Article was originally published on Aedit.
More than a century after the first recorded rhytidectomy (a.k.a. facelift), surgical techniques have come a long way toward natural, long lasting results.
Krista Smith
The technical term for facelift is “rhytidectomy,” which is derived from the Ancient Greek words for “wrinkle” (rhytis) and “excision” (ektome). And, while there remains some debate over what constituted the world’s first-ever rhytidectomy, it occurred at least a century ago in Europe at the request of a female patient. All this is to say, women (and, later, men) have been interested in the surgical removal of wrinkles for at least 100 years. Fortunately, face-lifting techniques have come a long way in that time.
“Traditional facelifts originally only addressed sagging skin,” says board certified plastic surgeon Jason Roostaeian, MD. “But the skin isn’t where the issue is. It’s the descent of the tissue deep into the skin, along with facial devolumization, that we’re mostly trying to remedy.”
OG facelifts relied entirely on pulling skin backwards, limiting the amount of correction and resulting in the telltale taut effect. As Dr. Jason explains, the reason tightening the facial skin alone leads to lackluster results is threefold:
The tightened skin starts to stretch again over time
Too much tension in the skin creates more visible scarring
Simply pulling the skin taut “doesn’t restore the volume and convexity” patients lose with age
In an effort to address these shortcomings, facial plastic surgeons in the 1970s coined the term “superficial musculoaponeurotic system” (SMAS) to describe the layer of fat and connective tissue that lies between the skin and the facial muscles and began experimenting with techniques that could lift and firm the face in a more natural way. Today, the evolution of SMAS-based surgeries has become the gold-standard of modern facelifts.
SMAS Plication Facelift
In a face-lifting technique known as plication, plastic surgeons suture the SMAS in a stair-step pattern that is pulled tight and secured to more stable deep tissue for a lifted effect. But there are complicating factors. When the skin is draped back over the sutured SMAS, the bunching of the underlying tissue can sometimes cause visible irregularities in the patient’s lower cheeks. “The whole essence of youth is smoothness,” Dr. Jason says. “Anytime you have a little contour problem, it ruins that. It’s aging.”
SMASectomy Facelift
To eliminate the risk of contour inconsistencies, today’s cosmetic surgeons generally rely on variations of a facelift technique known as SMASectomy, which utilizes both the mobile and immobile portions of the SMAS.
“Over the lateral portion of your face, closer to the ear, the SMAS tends to be stiffer, and, as you move forward toward the center of your face, it gets more mobile,” Dr. Jason says. “To avoid the pincushion effect that spanning sutures often produce, we instead remove a piece of the tissue at the junction of the mobile and immobile SMAS, pull up the mobile portion, and anchor it to the immobile portion near the ear.”
As a result, the sagging tissue and lax skin of the lower face and jowl area is lifted. Surgeons remove any excess skin and are able to hide the sutures in the natural crevices and folds around the ear.
High SMAS Facelift
A Deep Plane Facelift takes the SMASectomy method one step further. Plastic surgeons dissect the underside of the SMAS, separating it from the deeper muscle tissue to mobilize the entire SMAS layer prior to the SMASectomy. Dr. Jason prefers a slightly modified version of this technique known as a High SMAS Facelift.
While other SMAS techniques focus only on the lower face, Dr. Jason likes that this approach “frees up the entire SMAS as one unit — all the way up above the level of the zygomatic arch (cheekbone) — so you can have an effect on the cheek as well as the jawline.”
“If you only work below the cheek, then you’re not going to get an effect on the cheek,” he says, adding that the results are often longer lasting and more stable because the SMAS is thicker near the ear, allowing for a more secure suture.
The Procedure
Dr. Jason tailors each surgical procedure to the unique needs of his patients and says there is no “right age” for a facelift. “How do you know you’re a good candidate? When you first note the signs of aging that are best solved with a facelift,” he explains. “A facelift is the most elegant solution for sagging, loose skin of the lower face.” Generally speaking, facelift conversations begin with patients over 50.
It’s quite common for plastic surgeons to combine a High SMAS Facelift with a neck lift (to alleviate excess neck skin) and procedures like buccal fat pad removal and/or fat grafting (to address the volume distribution issues associated with facial aging). A brow lift, meanwhile, can refresh the upper portion of the face to balance out the lower facelift.
The result? Total facial rejuvenation.
The Recovery
An advantage of a Deep Plane Facelift is that it’s less traumatic to the superficial layers of the skin because the majority of the surgical manipulation occurs deeper. This usually leads to less bruising and better healing.
Dr. Jason’s facelift patients are typically out and about two weeks post-op (though patients who have had fat grafting to restore some of the lost volume in conjunction with their facelift procedure may experience longer recovery times due to the bruising that often accompanies the liposuction). He generally tells patients to allow six weeks before any major events and to expect something very close to a final result at three months. Scars, meanwhile, will grow nearly imperceptible over the course of a year.
It should be noted that, in addition to the risks associated with general anesthesia, facelifts carry a small risk of nerve damage that can create a slight unevenness when a patient smiles. This is due to manipulation of the platysma muscle, which can disrupt the facial nerve, but is rarely permanent.
Of greater concern for facelift patients is the chance of developing a hematoma (i.e. a collection of blood beneath the skin). While a hematoma has no impact on a patient’s long term result when managed properly, it can have a dramatic effect on the recovery process if left untreated.
“The face is very vascular. Whenever you lift up tissue and release all those attachments, you open up a big space into which you can bleed excessively,” says Dr. Jason. “Anesthesia and epinephrine in the operating room lower your blood pressure and constrict your vessels, so when that wears off and the blood vessels open up, we have to be diligent about monitoring your blood pressure.” For this reason, he requires an overnight hospital stay for his facelift patients so they can be monitored and cared for by professionals.
Patient Perspective
So what is it really like to get a facelift? The AEDITION spoke to two of Dr. Jason’s patients to gain more insight into the experience — from pre-op through recovery.
Rosemary, 55
When Rosemary booked a consultation with Dr. Jason to discuss an osteoma (a bony outgrowth) on her forehead, she jokingly asked if it would be possible to “just pull everything up” during the procedure. “He laughed and explained to me that the incisions for facelift surgery were very different,” she recalls. “But we talked about how the lower half of my face — my jawline and neck — was showing signs of aging more than the upper part.”
Dr. Jason pointed out that the BOTOX® and fillers that Rosemary’s dermatologist was injecting couldn’t really address the issues of the lower face, but she was nervous about having a medically necessary surgery — let alone cosmetic one — so she initially held off.
After several months of research, however, Rosemary made a second appointment and decided to go through with the facelift. She combined it with her osteoma removal, which meant a slightly longer recovery. In addition to her overnight stay at the UCLA Surgery Center, she opted to spend three days at a recovery facility, which she says is “well worth it, if you can afford it.” Rosemary credits her minimal swelling and bruising to the diligent icing by her after-care nurses.
Though she admits to feeling “a little shocked” by her swollen and bruised appearance immediately post-op, Rosemary was able to attend a party at her husband’s office about a month after the surgery. She says she’s gotten very positive feedback about her procedure from friends and family, but no one can guess what she’s had done.
Three years later, she’s still thrilled with her results. “It took off 10 years, and now if I don’t get enough sleep, my face doesn’t show it like it used to,” she says. “It’s been a really good thing.”
Diana
A facelift wasn’t necessarily on Diana’s radar, but she was concerned about looking older. When her close friend and her sister both began looking into facelift surgery, Diana realized she wanted to take the plunge. “I wanted to look better,” she says, “just for myself.”
Her friend referred her to Dr. Jason, who helped her formulate a plan that included a brow, neck, and facelift. She remembers the first week or so following her surgery was emotionally challenging. “After the surgery, it was exciting because I looked really good,” she shares. “And then like a week later, my face started looking really bad — like squared off, a weird shape and kind of yellow. It was depressing.”
But having her sister and friend going through similar experiences was very helpful, as was the reassurance she received from Dr. Jason. The changes she was experiencing were all part of the normal healing process. Two years post-op, Diana couldn’t be happier. “I had a really good experience, and I think I look great,” she says. “I love it.”

The popular cosmetic injectable turns 17 today. Here’s a brief history of how BOTOX® has changed the world.
Krista Smith
From its humble beginnings to worldwide infamy as the not-so-secret chemical weapon in the war on aging, BOTOX® is a truly versatile little toxin. On the 17 year anniversary of its approval by the Food and Drug Administration for cosmetic use, we pay tribute to the treatment that introduced the term “injectable neuromodulator” into the lexicon of ladies who lunch.
From Sausage Poison to Medical Miracle
European doctors in the 1800’s trace outbreaks of sometimes-fatal muscle paralysis to contaminated pork products, naming the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, from the Latin botulus, meaning “sausage.” It eventually led to the 1940’s and U.S. government researchers’ unsuccessful attempts to weaponize botulinum toxin type A, after theorizing that just two cups of the crystalline form of the bacteria could kill the entire world.
Instead, in the 1960’s, American scientists begin experimenting with the therapeutic potential of botulinum toxin, injecting it between the brows of monkeys to treat crossed eyes and observing that the substance significantly reduced wrinkling in the vertical frown lines between the eyes.
Thirty years later, in the 1990’s, Pharmaceutical company Allergan licensed the drug and christened it BOTOX®, subsequently receiving FDA approval to treat a variety of medical conditions including migraines, muscle spasms like cervical dystonia, and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
The Dawn of BOTOX® Cosmetic
On April 15, 2002, Allergan received the thumbs up to market BOTOX® as a frown line remedy, marking the first FDA-sanctioned cosmetic use of the drug. Other cosmetic procedure approvals followed suit, with BOTOX® Cosmetic receiving the FDA’s blessing to alleviate both crow’s feet and forehead lines. Along the way, botulinum toxin has made its share of headlines in the war on wrinkles. Here are the highlights:
January 2003: Cornell University Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology Dr. David S. Becker declares that BOTOX® can actually cause wrinkles. Don’t look so surprised: Becker’s theory that other muscles will move to compensate, thereby creating wrinkles in adjacent areas, seems logical. The simple solution? More BOTOX® treatments (just kidding).
August 2006: Then-41-year-old supermodel Linda Evangelista reveals to Vogue, “I use BOTOX® and I’m not afraid to say it, though I do like to keep some movement in my face.” A smart standard if your job depends on being able to emote.
March 2009:The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reveals research that indicates reducing the glabellar, or frown lines, with anti-aging BOTOX® injections simultaneously decreases feelings of depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, nobody can tell whether the patients are happy about it.
April 2010: Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University discover that after two years, patients can cut their BOTOX® use in half while still maintaining the full benefits. Allergan, which sponsored the study, did not express concern regarding the potential profit loss.
February 2014: Hollywood remains stone-faced after actress Robin Wright outs A-listers’ BOTOX® habits in an interview with The Telegraph: “Everybody f— does it. I suppose I can’t say ‘everybody’ because I don’t know for sure, but come on…Perhaps it’s not wise to put that in a magazine? But I ain’t hiding anything.”
October 2017: Iconic luxury wellness resort Canyon Ranch – historically known for its holistic approach – adds BOTOX® to the list of offerings at its new, in-house aesthetic center. The move begs the question: is BOTOX® organic?
January 2018: 12 contestants in a Saudi Arabian beauty contest are disqualified for receiving BOTOX® to enhance the look of their lips, nose and jaw. The catch? They’re camels.
January 2019: Two men walk out of a downtown Los Angeles medspa without paying for thousands of dollars-worth of non-invasive plastic surgery, including BOTOX® and filler injections. Local news sources broadcast their before and after photos hoping that someone will recognize and report the so-called “BOTOX® bandits.”
From humble sausage poison to internationally-recognized superstar, you’ve come a long way, BOTOX®. Happy Birthday – may you stay forever young.

Some victims, many who have had the jabs for medical reasons as well as to smooth out wrinkles, are left with serious and seemingly incurable health conditions.
As the controversial treatment hits the high street, JACQUI DEEVOY speaks to the victims who are set to sue two of its biggest manufacturers.
TWENTY FOUR people who claim botulin injections have destroyed their lives are aiming to sue two prominent manufacturers.
According to the evidence gathered the use of Botox, owned and marketed by Allergan and French company Ipsen, has resulted in life-changing side effects for thousands worldwide.

After meeting through a Facebook support group, 24 sufferers have united hoping to sue the pharmaceutical giants.
While experts warn that the £99 high street treatments, which Superdrug last week started offering in its flagship store in London, should not be seen in the same way as other less invasive beauty treatments, customers – many influenced by TV shows such as Love Island where contestants in their 20s are resorting to Botox to keep their faces “perfect” – are sure to be queuing up to smooth out their frown lines.
Getting rid of wrinkles was what some of the 24 complainants hoped to do when they first had Botox; others were prescribed it for medical reasons.
London fitness instructor Maria Bajo is working closely with criminal lawyer Stephen Fidler and the other 23 victims to get the main producers of the Botulin Type A treatments investigated and taken to court.
“I have done five years of research and have found plenty of evidence to prove that the various symptoms, illnesses and conditions that Botox-damaged people are suffering from have been caused by the products supplied by these companies.
“We also have evidence that the toxin and ingredients from the injections stay in the blood for many years, circulating around the body, affecting the brain and organ function, causing neurological and other damage,” says Maria, who intends to present this in court.
It’s a common misconception that Botox is used for purely cosmetic reasons (Image: GETTY)
Although many doctors agree that Botox can be harmful, only a few have carried out studies or written papers on the subject.
One four-year study by Dr Anna Hristova (published in the Journal of Bacteriology and Mycology) concluded a condition known as impaired neuronal communications syndrome (INCS) is a serious and longlasting complication of Botox treatment.
The problem is that not many medics know about it and sufferers are often misdiagnosed.
She says: “There is no current widespread awareness of the syndrome among the medical society. Further research is urgently needed.”
ALLERGAN plc started in the United States in 1950 as Allergan Pharmaceuticals.
It operates in around 100 countries, employing 17,000 people, and owns a host of well-known brands including the Botox product.
Ipsen is a French pharmaceutical company employing 1,000 workers, which develops and markets medications including Dysport®, a trade-name for the botulinum type A, the bacteria that causes botulism – a rare and potential fatal illness.

When used in small amounts – for medical or aesthetic reasons – Botox is generally considered safe (Image: GETTY)
It’s a common misconception that Botox is used for purely cosmetic reasons.
Thousands are given it to treat medical problems from blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) to excessive sweating to bladder problems.
Allergan is even looking into how it can treat premature ejaculation.
When used in small amounts – for medical or aesthetic reasons – Botox is generally considered safe.
The drug comes with risks but the severity seems to be underplayed by the companies manufacturing it and by those administering it. Since 2009 the US Food And Drug Administration (FDA) has required Botox to carry a “black box”, the strictest warning in the labelling of drugs or drug products.
It indicates that there’s reasonable evidence of an association of a serious hazard with the drug. There is no official warning attached to Botox or Dysport® in the UK or anywhere in Europe.
Since 2003 Allergan has been sued several times with claimants suffering droopy eyelids, numbness, headaches, swallowing and breathing problems, brain damage and death.
In 2011, Allergan was ordered to pay $ 212million (£166million) compensation to a Virginia man who suffered brain damage after using the drug to treat hand tremors. It was also fi ned $ 600million in 2010 for “misbranding”.
To date there have been no lawsuits in the UK, despite plenty of reports of adverse reactions to the drug.
Lawyer Stephen Fidler and the 24 victims want to change that. “A large file of papers proving, in our view, an offence of administration of a noxious substance, has been delivered to the City of London Police,” he says. “We understand that they are reviewing the matter.”
However, a spokesman for Allergan insists: “Patient safety is a priority for Allergan and we take any reports of side effects related to all of our products very seriously, however we cannot comment on specific cases. “Allergan believes that medical aesthetic injectable treatments are medical procedures and should only be carried out by a trained and qualified healthcare professional in an appropriate clinical environment.”
Ipsen was unavailable to comment.
‘I feel faint and have terrible brain fog’ (Image: NC )
FITNESS instructor Maria Bajo had more than 50 life-changing symptoms, including heart problems, diffi culty in breathing, anxiety, loss of bladder control, hair loss, tooth decay and hallucinations after having Botox. “
I started using Botox in 2008,” says the 45-year-old north Londoner.
“At the time I was planning to start a family with my partner but instead of becoming a father he became my carer.”
Unfortunately he found it too much to cope with and left her in 2014.
“We’re still friends,” she says. “It was hard for him. He had to cope with my illness, my depression, the hallucinations…
At one point I was freaking out because there were monsters everywhere and I kept shouting that I had to kill them.”
She became steadily more ill and her symptoms became so bad she considered a euthanasia clinic in Switzerland: “I was in so much pain, it was like torture,” Maria recalls.
“I just wanted it to stop.
Euthanasia seemed like a good option.”
Slowly recovering with a strict clean eating diet, vitamins and supplements, but no medication, no alcohol, no make-up or hair dye, she’s researched the dangers of Botox and has spoken to doctors, scientists, Botox victim survivors and the companies that make the products.
Eight years on she now has medical evidence that shows she is suffering from latrogenic botulism – Botox cosmetic poisoning.
Doctors have agreed to go to court to support her but knowing all this still doesn’t help her on an everyday level.
“My life is challenging. I have to have naps in the day. I live with feeling constantly faint; I have terrible brain fog; my anxiety comes and goes,” she says.
“I have nerve-related difficulties such as lack of bladder control, along with memory and concentration issues.”
She regrets having Botox and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone: “So many people don’t want to know the truth, so all I would say to someone who’s determined to have it, is please do some research before getting it: despite what we’re told it is not a safe procedure.
‘Ten years later and I have permanent muscle problems’ (Image: NC)
ALAN ROSS had Dysport (the Ipsen brand of Botox) for an overactive bladder in 2008.
The 54-year-old from Inverness had a temporary catheter fitted and then had Botox injections. T
he muscles closed in around the catheter and caused it to retract: he needed emergency treatment to have it removed.
“The consultant said the effects were temporary and that feeling would come back after six months to a year,” says Ross.
“Ten years later and I have permanent muscle problems, worse than when I first went for treatment.”
As a result of his bladder problems, caused by the Botox, Alan, who trained as an archaeologist, can no longer work: “I am currently going through several hundred catheters a week,” he says. “I have to change them dozens of time a day, so that makes it impossible for me to have a normal life.
I cost the NHS over £15,000 a year.”
His experiences during and after the treatment also contributed towards the breakdown of his marriage and a loss of contact with his children. “It’s been a horror story from the start,” he states.
“I’m not exaggerating when i say Botox ruined my life.”
‘I considered committing suicide.’ (Image: NC)
EVENTS organiser Janine Brockway started having Botox for forehead and eye wrinkles in 2012.
She consulted two doctors and both insisted it was safe. Within months the 44-year-old from Maidenhead, Berkshire, became ill and was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.
She didn’t make a connection at first but eventually noticed symptoms would become worse after treatments.
“I asked the doctor who was supplying the Botox whether my illnesses could be caused by the Botox and she told me that this wasn’t possible.”
Shortly after that conversation, anxiety and panic attacks started.
She also suffered from extreme fatigue, insomnia, numbness in her legs, chest pain, neck spasms, blurry vision and nausea.
Depression also kicked in.
“Sometimes, I felt so bad,” says Janine, “I considered committing suicide.”
She decided Botox was causing her problems in 2016 after becoming extremely sick, vomiting, unable to breathe properly and finding it hard to walk.
“There was no doubt in my mind that it was the Botox causing it,” she says. After stopping the treatments her health has improved dramatically and she says: “Having Botox was the worst mistake of my life.
I tell anyone who cares to listen to not have it.”
‘If I’d known risks, I’d never have had Botox’ (Image: NC)
JENNIFER WILSON was having Botox four times a year for cervical dystonia, a painful condition in which the neck muscles contract involuntarily causing a head tremor or sudden twisting and turning of the head.
“It worked well for years,” she says of the treatment which she started in 2010.
“Then, after having an injection in August 2017 I developed severe insomnia, lost my ability to balance and couldn’t complete everyday normal tasks without getting confused.”
Not making the link between the Botox and the symptoms, the 57-year-old medical secretary from Glassford in South Lanarkshire went on to have another injection in November 2017, when her face, lips and tongue swelled up.
She then developed a sinus infection, along with chronic fatigue, muscle weakness and dizziness, which her GP put down to a viral infection.
She was left housebound for two months.
This February she had another Botox treatment and again developed the same debilitating symptoms, as well as hearing issues.
Desperate for answers, she finally consulted an expert. “A few months ago I saw a neurologist, who confirmed that my problems could be linked to the Botox,” she says.
“I stopped the treatments immediately.” Sadly Jennifer feels she stopped too late.
“My symptoms are worsening,” she claims, adding that she has suffered from blurred vision, drooping eyelids, sore skin on her face, feeling faint, general weakness, swollen lymph nodes, blocked ears, stabbing pains in her head, migraines, pain in her teeth and jaw, a persistent cough, chills, trembling, diarrhoea, heart palpitations, forgetfulness, confusion, poor concentration and nausea. “And that’s just the half of it,” she says.
“The symptoms come and go; when I think they’ve gone, they reappear. Every day I feel like I have a hangover. “If I’d known I’d have ended up like this, I’d have never had the Botox treatments.”

But Gerard Lambe, a top plastic surgeon and spokesman for the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, warned that the “serious” procedures can have horrific consequences if performed incorrectly.
He said: “While Superdrug may be hiring medically trained nurses, it is crucial members of the public do not treat having Botox and dermal fillings as casual beauty treatments.
“Administering an injection of any kind is a very serious procedure. All kinds of risks can arise, from infection, to incorrectly applied needle placement over delicate facial muscles, which can lead to paralysis.
“Just this week a woman was permanently blinded in one eye in Australia from a dermal filler injection at a clinic where there was no doctor physically present.”
Superdrug has said the treatments, available to over-25s, will be administered by nurses “trained to the highest standard” and a qualified aesthetics nurse will decide whether they are eligible.
But consultant plastic surgeon Rajiv Grover said: “Just because botox is being done on the high street, the public should not think it is like a beauty treatment with benefits and also significant risks.”
Dr Tijion Esho, resident doctor on E4’s Body Fixers TV series, added: “It [aesthetics] will need to be truly medical and have a stable long-standing team of experts delivering a high standard of treatments within a clinical setting.”
Superdrug prices start at £99 for a standard forehead or crow’s feet Botox procedure which can cost as much as £300 elsewhere.
If successful, the chain will roll out the service nationwide.

Chris Newson, of Superdrug, said: “We’re listening to what people are telling us they would like, which is the reassurance that if they choose to have aesthetic treatments it will be administered by highly qualified nurse practitioners in a private consultation room.”
Dr Pixie McKenna, Superdrug’s health and wellbeing ambassador, backed the move, saying: “We have seen an increase in the number of people claiming to be ‘expert’ practitioners in the eld. I have seen and heard many horror stories.”

Macey J Foronda for BuzzFeed
Allgemein gesagt, MEINE VAGINA TUT SEHR WEH.
Lara Parker
BuzzFeed Motion Pictures / Lara Parker
Schließlich habe ich vom The Roxbury Institute gehört.
Also habe ich gefeiert.

When he inferred that one of his female colleagues was old, Naga Munchetty couldn’t hold her tongue.
As the duo presented a news piece on camels at a Saudi Arabian pageant being given Botox to improve their appearance, the subject turned to human cosmestic procedures.
BBC Breakfast sport reporter Sonali Shah chimed in on the subject, claiming that some actresses had taken to getting the injections in their knees.
She explained: “Knees show your age as well as your hands. Hands always show my age.”
“Yeah,” replied the 55-year-old before he realised what he had implied.
“Well, I don’t mean yes, I guess I can see that in general term,” he flapped.
Sonali, 37, didn’t have much to say to the comment but 42-year-old Naga quickly intervened.
She recognised her co-host could be heading in to dangerous territory and encouraged him to keep his mouth closed.
“Be quiet Charlie, be quiet Charlie,” she warned.
The bungling journalist attempted to justify his comments but soon realised it would be futile.
The duo swiftly turned back to the camera as they brushed past the very awkward moment.
“Big hole just been dug,” Naga announced.
Conflict between BBC Breakfast hosts seems to be a regular occurrence this week.

The contest is part of a month-long festival, located on the outskirts of Riyadh, and is designed to celebrate the camel, which is considered a “symbol of Saudi Arabia,” Fawzan al-Madi, chief judge of the contest, told Reuters.

“We used to preserve it out of necessity, now we preserve it as a pastime,” he added.
The camels take part in a series of races and show competitions in the hope of bagging a portion of the combined prize fund of 213 million riyals ($ 57 million).
In the beauty portion of the contest, judges rate the size of the animal’s lips, cheeks, head and knees while crowds of men watch from the bleachers. Any form of camel modification is strictly prohibited, however with such a substantial prize up for grabs, some contestants have resorted to extreme measures to come out on top. Including, but not limited to, the use of Botox.
“Camels that are found with drugs in the lips, shaved, dyed in any parts of the body, or with changes from natural form are not allowed [sic],” the 2017 handbook says, reports Newshub.
This year, some 300,000 people travelled to the festival which includes a petting zoo of the world’s tallest and shortest camels, a museum of life-sized sand sculptures of camels, camel milk tastings, and a planetarium showing how Arabs on camels used the stars as a guide to explore.

To combat recent stock weakness, Botox-maker Allergan is resorting to the oldest trick in the book: share buybacks.
On Monday, it authorized a $ 2 billion repurchase of its common stock, employing a tactic frequently used by companies to boost shares during times devoid of other positive catalysts.
It’s an interestingly-timed development, considering the hit absorbed by Allergan’s drug pipeline on Friday, when the company received a “refusal to file” (RTF) letter from US Food and Drug Administration. It came with regard to Allergan’s application for Vraylar, a drug intended to treat the negative symptoms in adult schizophrenic patients.
And wouldn’t you know it, Allergan’s stock is up almost 4% on Monday, with the negative effect of the FDA news — released after the market close on Friday — more than offset by the buyback announcement.
The share increase is certainly welcome news for owners of Allergan’s stock, which had recently plummeted as much as 21% from a one-year high reached in July.
Markets Insider
In the press release announcing the buyback, Allergan didn’t exactly hide its rationale: The company thinks its shares are attractively-priced at current levels. They’re adopting a technique often used by companies to exhibit confidence in themselves, and so far it’s working.
“We continue to believe that Allergan stock is substantially undervalued, and the share price today presents a unique investment opportunity for the company,” Brett Saunders, chairman, CEO and president of Allergan, wrote in Monday’s release. “In its decision, the board is demonstrating its confidence in our future prospects.”
Still, Allergan’s success likely won’t be easily replicated by other US companies. Stock valuations are in the 89th percentile of their 40-year history, according to Goldman Sachs. That means many stocks in major indexes may be too expensive or fully-valued to be effectively boosted by repurchases.
Put differently, it might not make economical sense for a company to sink the required capital into a strategy that might not lift shares materially higher.
It’s a dynamic that Bank of America Merrill Lynch has recently highlighted. Long a reliable safety net for the 8 1/2-year bull market, buybacks are starting to dry up, a victim of their own success.
As such, it appears that Allergan’s success with its buyback authorization is purely situational. Given the right circumstances, the ever-reliable backbone of stock gains is still alive and well.
