And on disc, we’ve got the summer’s weirdest movie, as well as a couple of ‘80s picks — one beloved, one waiting for discovery.

ON NETFLIX

Shirkers: On its face, Sandi Tan’s documentary sounds beyond niche: a documentary about the making of a movie you’ve never heard of, a low-budget serial killer thriller Tan and her friends made in their native Singapore when they were teenagers. But it starts as more than that (capturing, with heartrending familiarity, the feeling of being a teenager who discovers “unusual movies and unpopular music,” devouring “what people around us ignored”) and expands as it finds its true subject: “George,” the older mentor and ostensible director of the project, whose peculiar behavior during the shoot and outright betrayal of his collaborators after becomes a lifelong obsession for Tan. And so, this riveting tale becomes a mystery — in which our protagonist attempts to unravel not a crime, but the psyche of an enigma. “Shirkers became a secret history, shared by a small group of us,” says in the opening narration, and it’s not hyperbole; by the picture’s end, that group has become much larger.

You Were Never Really Here: The latest from Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin) opens with a series of upsetting sounds and images, but in such garbled audio and tight close-ups, you can’t fully determine what’s happened (except that it was nothing good). She puts the viewer off-balance right away, a mode that’s maintained throughout this adaptation of Jonathan Ames’ novella, featuring Joaquin Phoenix as a contract killer in a ball cap, hoodie, and Mel Gibson beard who takes a job that goes, to put it mildly, off the rails. There’s an unwinking hopelessness and despair in this parade of death, the filmmaker refusing to put a shiny gloss on its considerable bleakness, yet it is also stylishly scuzzy and weirdly funny (in the darkest possible manner), full of story turns that land like gut punches and scenes you simultaneously can’t bear to watch, and can’t look away from. It has the skill of a genre exercise — but the soul of a chamber piece.

ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

Sorry to Bother You: The Coup frontman Boots Riley makes his feature directorial debut with this broad social satire, and firmly establishes himself as a singular comic voice — weird, wild, and provocative. He indulges in everything from indie-movie in-jokes to Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker style background gags (there’s even an explicit Monty Python shout-out), all infused with a healthy dose of his Marxist sensibility. It runs out of gas a bit in the back third, but even then, his sterling cast carries him through; Lakeith Stanfield’s sprung style and off-kilter readings are an ideal delivery system for the script’s verbal wit, Armie Hammer’s role is brief but (to say the least) striking, and though Tessa Thompson doesn’t get quite enough to do, her individual moments (particularly the glimpse of her performance art) are inspired. It’s kind of mess, I suppose — but then again, so was Putney Swope.  (Includes audio commentary and featurette.)

The Princess Bride: Rob Reiner’s exquisite adaptation of William Goldman’s novel joins the Criterion Collection, and though it’s been on Blu-ray before, the double-dip seems somehow acceptable; this is an endlessly rewatchable picture, the cinematic equivalent of an old record you never get tired of playing. And it has an undeniably timeless quality — our basic precepts of love and romance are all rooted in storybooks and fairy tales anyway, which is part of why The Princess Bride remains so close to our hearts. There’s a purity to it, a simplicity to the (literally) undying love of Westley and Buttercup that grounds the rest of the movie’s sly genre send-ups and self-aware gags. It is, as advertised, True Love, and is so good-natured and lovely that by the end of the tale, even little Fred Savage doesn’t mind the kissing parts. (Includes audio commentary, audiobook excerpts, featurettes, new and archival interviews, video diary, and trailer.)

D.O.A.: This 1988 remake of the 1949 film noir classic (new on Blu from KL Studio Classics) is mostly in it for the title and the still-juicy premise: it opens with a sickly man stumbling into a police station to report a murder, and when asked who was killed, he replies, “I was.” The story is then told in flashback, as our protagonist was given a slow-acting poison, and attempts to use his few remaining hours to figure out who killed him, and why. Directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton were best known for creating Max Headroom, and their execution is showily stylish — lots of wild angles, big shadows, shafts of light, and saturation shifts. They can’t match the original (obviously), but their take has its virtues: sweaty atmosphere (they wisely return star Dennis Quaid to the Louisiana environs of his earlier hit The Big Easy), ample chemistry (he co-stars with off-screen partner Meg Ryan), neat twists, and snazzy set pieces. (Includes audio commentaries and trailer.)

How ‘Sorry To Bother You’ Explores the Pitfalls of Capitalism https://briefnews.eu/how-sorry-to-bother-you-explores-the-pitfalls-of-capitalism/ https://briefnews.eu/how-sorry-to-bother-you-explores-the-pitfalls-of-capitalism/#respond Sun, 15 Jul 2018 11:29:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-sorry-to-bother-you-explores-the-pitfalls-of-capitalism/ sorry to bother you red band trailer

“An economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market.”

Boots Riley’s film Sorry To Bother You is a film people have been buzzing about for a while, for a good reason. It is a fun comedy steeped in magical realism, with fantastic acting and brilliant cinematography, a film that shouldn’t be missed in theaters. But Boots Riley’s film is also an anti-capitalist love-letter, and we definitely need to talk about that.

Riley (an activist and a musician before he turned to filmmaking) has always been forthcoming with his anti-capitalist beliefs, and it would only be fitting that the themes of his directorial debut reflect that. Sorry To Bother You takes place in an alternate version of Oakland, California. We follow Cassius Green, better known as Cash, as he begins his new job at Regel View as a telemarketer. He soon finds out he has a gift when he is told by Langston (Danny Glover) to use his “white voice” to improve his sales. It works, and Cash quickly rises through the ranks and becomes one of the coveted “Power Callers.” The film follows Cash at his lowest lows and takes us to his highest highs.

The commentary on capitalism plays a significant role in Sorry To Bother You. Cash is at the bottom when we first meet him. Living in his uncle’s garage, unable to pay rent, and driving a car on the verge of explosion with 15 cents worth of gas in the tank, Cash is in need of a come-up. He finds out his Uncle is on the verge of losing his house and is considering joining a company called Worry-Free. Worry-Free is a place where, in exchange for indentured servitude, people will no longer have to worry about rent, bills, or even grocery costs. They essentially become slaves for a corporation that doesn’t believe in paying its workers.

To help his uncle from losing his house and possible freedom, Cash goes into Regel View and lies in an attempt to get the job. When he is found out, he is not punished, but rewarded for his sleazy methods and gets the gig. He immediately sets his eyes on becoming a “Power Caller” by utilizing the same “by any means necessary” attitude to work his way to the top. Riley comments on how the capitalist system is geared to reward not the honest hard-working people like Cash’s uncle, but people like Cash, who lie and try to manipulate the system to make their way to the top.

Cash’s eventual success is entirely built on lies and his “white voice” is the pinnacle of the lie. Code-switching is something people of color often have to resort to because of the innate racism of society. The less a person of color sounds ethnic, the more likely they will be able to gain access to the service they want. However, in Cash’s situation, the “white voice” takes him to the top of his career. As a Power Caller, he is expected to speak in the voice regularly and slowly throughout the movie, he loses himself within that voice, no longer using it as a means to get by, but adopting it as part of his personality. Cash begins to forsake his friends, his beliefs, and even himself. All to make more money.

At one point in the film, you can’t help but think “Can You blame him?” He helps his uncle out of poverty, saves his house, moves to a swanky apartment in San Francisco, and creates a better life for himself. Boots Riley navigates this moment perfectly: Cash may have lifted himself out of poverty, but we discover that Power Callers sell weapons of war and indentured servitude. Cash’s new capitalist ideals are not without harm; he has thrown other people under the bus to gain his success.

Cash’s best friend played (Jermaine Fowler) and girlfriend (Tessa Thompson) work in the lower echelon of the company. Led by Squeeze (Steve Yeun), they decide to protest and picket Regal Views policies, and demand fair wages and benefits for all. This goes against Cash’s plan of moving up within the corporate structure, so he takes his “by any means necessary attitude” and becomes the enemy that his friends are fighting.

Riley utilizes cinematography and color to show how grim Cash’s world becomes once he buys into capitalism. At the beginning of the film, when Cash is out with his friends and driving around in his lemon of a car, the frame is painted with vivid and bright colors. Reds, purples, blues, dance across the faces of all the characters, evoking a lively and happy atmosphere. Then as Cash makes more money and works his way up the ranks, we see him go to a corporate party. All the color is sucked out of the room, all we are left with is a desaturated space, where there isn’t a smile or an ounce of color to be seen.

Even though Cash has no money and is living in abject poverty, his life is filled with moments of genuine happiness and love. When in low-income situations, everything is copacetic – it’s only when Cash is surrounded by wealth that his life, and the frame of the film, is dark, sinful, and generally uncomfortable. When he becomes financially stable and has the job of his dreams, his world becomes drab, he finds himself surrounded by fake friends, and he becomes more and more unhappy.

Sorry To Bother You is indeed the voice of Boots Riley: the movie is a commentary on the disparity of how wealth is distributed in this country and how the rich become wealthier on the backs of honest people. Cash’s journey is the anti-hero’s journey – from desperation, he dives at a chance to sell his soul for a better life within a system that has kept him from doing otherwise. Sorry To Bother You is a radical examination of Capitalism is antiquated and a dire warning. Otherwise, our world might start to look more like the alternate one presented in Riley’s film.

Speaking to reporters, the UN spokesman declined to comment on the US move to expel 12 Russian diplomats from the permanent mission to the UN, citing the “sensitivity” of the issue.

“Given the sensitivity of the matter, which is ongoing, we will not comment further at this stage other than to confirm that the Secretary-General will closely follow this matter and engage as appropriate with the Governments concerned,” Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, explained.

The official stated that Washington had notified the UN of its decision, made under Section 13b of the Treaty between the United Nations and the United States as the host country.

“Laws and regulations in force in the United States regarding the residence of aliens shall not be applied in such manner as to interfere with the … and, specifically, shall not be applied in such manner as to require any such person to leave the United States on account of any activities performed by him in his official capacity,” the section reads, adding that “activities in the United States outside his official capacity” render the UN privileges void.

Earlier on Monday, the US Ambassador to Russia, Jon Huntsman, told TASS that the US apparently did not notify the UN of its move beforehand. The diplomat said, however, that Washington was expected to do so. Such a decision requires some “very serious evidence,” Huntsman added. It has remained unclear whether the evidence in question was provided.

The expulsion of diplomats is linked somehow both to the Skripal case and to the “concerns” of the American people, over the numbers of intelligence officers operating on US soil, the US envoy stated. Huntsman described the diplomats’ ouster as the “largest expulsion of Russian intelligence officers in the United States’ history.”

“The United States takes this action in conjunction with our NATO allies and partners around the world in response to a military-grade chemical weapon attack on the soil of the United Kingdom by Russia,” Huntsman said, in a recorded statement. “Today’s actions make the United States a safer place by limiting the ability of Russia to spy on Americans and conduct covert activities that threaten America’s national security.”

The US expelled the 12 Russian diplomats with the UN, as well as 48 other diplomats working in the US, on Monday. The move came on the pretext of alleged Russian involvement with the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the British town of Salisbury on March 4. Several NATO and European countries have also expelled Russian diplomats, citing their “solidarity” with the UK as a reason. While the UK pinned the blame on Moscow shortly after the incident, no evidence has been provided so far.

‘Sorry to Bother You’ Trailer: All Hail One of 2018’s Strangest (and Best) Films https://briefnews.eu/sorry-to-bother-you-trailer-all-hail-one-of-2018s-strangest-and-best-films/ https://briefnews.eu/sorry-to-bother-you-trailer-all-hail-one-of-2018s-strangest-and-best-films/#respond Sun, 11 Mar 2018 23:54:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sorry-to-bother-you-trailer-all-hail-one-of-2018s-strangest-and-best-films/ Sorry to Bother You trailer

You may think you’re ready to see Boots Riley‘s sensational Sorry to Bother You. But I assure you, you are not ready for some of the bizarre ideas and off-the-wall imagery this film has in store for you. Annapurna Pictures wisely scooped up Riley’s much-discussed debut movie after it premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and now they’ve released the first Sorry to Bother You trailer. Strap in, because things are about to get weird.

Sorry to Bother You Trailer

Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) plays Cassius Green, a lackadaisical telemarketer who realizes he has the power to speak with a “white voice” (played by Arrested Development‘s David Cross). Armed with this new skill, Cassius (aka “Cash”) becomes a rising star at his company – much to the chagrin of his activist girlfriend, Detroit (Tessa Thompson). At the top of the corporate ladder, Cash encounters the over-the-top personality of Steve Lift (Armie Hammer), a coke-snorting CEO who has a few disturbing secrets of his own. The film itself is hilarious, fanciful, occasionally unsettling, creepy, and most importantly, a searing social satire that actually makes you think. And at the risk of overhyping it, this is more than just a movie: it’s a true piece of art.

Here’s an excerpt from my Sundance review, which refers to the movie as “a mind-bending story that’s overflowing with WTF moments”:

There’s a lot going on here: it’s a story about pushing back against corporate greed, about the sacrifices we’re willing to make for money, and about things getting so nuts that we end up just accepting it as our new normal. (That last aspect feels especially relevant in our current political climate, even though Riley wrote an earlier version of this story years before the chaos of the Trump administration.) But ultimately, this is a story about the sickening feeling of commodification – the commodification of black people, specifically, but the scope widens even further as the extent of Steve Lift’s master plan becomes clear.

I can say with confidence and without hesitation that you’ve never seen anything like this before. That originality is bursting forth in nearly every frame of this film, immediately marking writer/director Boots Riley as a filmmaker to watch very closely in the years to come. I’m so excited for you all to see this movie.

Sorry to Bother You is currently slated to hit theaters on July 6, 2018.

Extra attention doesn't bother Ellie Black as gymnastics worlds approach https://briefnews.eu/extra-attention-doesnt-bother-ellie-black-as-gymnastics-worlds-approach/ https://briefnews.eu/extra-attention-doesnt-bother-ellie-black-as-gymnastics-worlds-approach/#respond Wed, 27 Sep 2017 23:22:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/extra-attention-doesnt-bother-ellie-black-as-gymnastics-worlds-approach/ Ellie Black’s body has undergone its share of wear and tear over the years, but she says it’s just a part of any athlete’s lifestyle.

The Halifax native is still very much in love with gymnastics but knew she had to take a break after her fifth-place finish in the women’s individual all-around competition at the Rio Olympics.

“You have to take some time to rest your body and mind and that’s an important part about sport is finding those down times,” Black says.

“It’s been such a big part of my life for so long and so it’s kind of hard to take breaks sometimes but I was ready to come back and start competing and training again.”

Since her return, Black continued to rack up the hardware, winning three silver medals at the 2017 FIG World Challenge Cup, and adding four more medals at last month’s Summer Universiade.

No such thing as ‘time off’

But coming back after a long layoff is never an easy task for a gymnast.

Canada’s Kyle Shewfelt, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics, took up the sport at the age of six and missed prolonged periods during his career due to injury.

He says that even though a gymnast is taking “time off,“ the work continues and you never completely shut your mind off from the sport.

But it’s also possible to lose that competitive edge, and once you do, it can be tough to regain.

“You’re actually not out of the gym — you’re just not training routines. Gymnastics is one of those sports that you’re always having to maintain some sort of shape. Your brain gets in a certain mode — you turn into a competitor,” says Shewfelt, who currently serves as a CBC Sports analyst.

“Each day you feel this pull towards the goal and purpose. So when you are out of the gym for a while or out of competition mode, it’s difficult to continue to be motivated because you don’t really have the taste to what’s next.”

Preparation for worlds

Going into next week’s artistic gymnastics world championships in Montreal, Black isn’t placing special emphasis on the event.

Live stream action begins on Thursday Oct. 5 (CBCSports.ca, 7 p.m. ET), with TV coverage continuing on Road to the Olympics Games (CBC, 11:30 local time).

kyle-shewfelt

The 22-year-old is focused on what she can control rather than the end result, and follows a process to best prepare herself for competition.

“I like to visualize my routines, just myself being out there competing. It really does help to walk yourself through your routine like you’re doing it so it’s not too overwhelming once you get there,” Black says.

Shewfelt followed a similar routine over a career that included three Olympic Games and an Olympic gold medal.

He found that as a big meet approached, things start to come together and it becomes more about the details.

“When you’re a kid, you dream of winning Olympic medals and worlds. But as you get closer to that, you dial it down to what the performance looks like. Rather than thinking of results, you’re trying to visualize the routine that’s going to be excellent,” Shewfelt says.

“You’re really trying to focus on your best performance and what do those routines look like? How do you catch the bar? How does your landing look? How are your feet on your twisting elements?”

Embracing extra attention

With this year’s worlds being only an individual competition, more eyes will be on Black.

But after her five-medal showing at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, Black proved that she’s more than capable of handling the extra attention.

eli-black

“Competing in front of the hometown crowd — it’s more exciting than nerve wracking. It’s a chance to do the sport that you love in front of your friends and family — everyone who supported you — and to enjoy that the whole competition,” recalls Black.

Being present in moment

Shewfelt won a pair of bronze medals at the 2003 worlds on floor and vault. He credits his breakthrough to blocking out all external factors and being present in the moment — focusing on executing the skills in his routine.

The Calgary native acknowledged that it took time to develop this and that learning to trust yourself in big moments comes with experience.

“The only thing you can control is your own performance. You can’t control the expectations, the judges, the way other athletes perform. Ellie is someone that has really dialled in to just focusing on the controllables and that for her is the way she goes out there and performs,” Shewfelt says.

“I think that comes with maturity. You learn through good times and bad times that you can’t control the outcomes. She’s had great success because she’s been able to focus on what needs to happen on the day.”

With a pair of Olympic Games of her own, it seems that Black has developed the same thought process.

“Simone [Biles] and Aly [Raisman] won’t be there but there’s other athletes. [I’m] trying not to think too much about that because at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter who’s competing. As long as you’re going out and doing your best performance, that’s what’s going to matter,” Black says.

Tessa Thompson, Steven Yeun, LaKeith Stanfield to Star in ‘Sorry to Bother You’ https://briefnews.eu/tessa-thompson-steven-yeun-lakeith-stanfield-to-star-in-sorry-to-bother-you/ https://briefnews.eu/tessa-thompson-steven-yeun-lakeith-stanfield-to-star-in-sorry-to-bother-you/#respond Fri, 16 Jun 2017 22:02:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tessa-thompson-steven-yeun-lakeith-stanfield-to-star-in-sorry-to-bother-you/ sorry to bother you

You probably didn’t notice back in 2014, but Tessa Thompson and LaKeith Stanfield both starred in Selma. And in the years since, both of their careers have taken off (though arguably, Thompson has been killing it since her Veronica Mars years) with Thompson making waves in Dear White People, Creed, and now the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, and Stanfield stealing the show in Atlanta.

Now, the two of them will be reuniting and joined by The Walking Dead and Okja‘s Steven Yeun — another actor who deserves to get his due — to star in the drama Sorry to Bother You.

Sorry to Bother You will be helmed by first-time director Boots Riley, who is best known as a rapper and front-man of The Coup.

The movie is about “a black telemarketer with self-esteem issues” who “discovers a magical key to business success, propelling him to the upper echelons of the hierarchy just as his activist comrades are rising up against unjust labor practices. When he uncovers the macabre secret of his corporate overlords, he must decide whether to stand up or sell out,” according to Deadline.

Though this seems like Riley’s first venture in the movie world, he studied film briefly at San Francisco State University before pursuing his music career. He has directed a music video for The Coup’s “Me And Jesus The Pimp In A ’79 Granada Last Night” which formed the basis for the novel Too Beautiful For Words.

The project is slated to begin filming in Oakland, Calif. this month. Coincidentally, that’s where Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed Fruitvale Station was filmed, and Sorry to Bother You will be produced by Fruitvale Station‘s Nina Yang Bongiovi and Forest Whitaker of Signficant Prods., alongside 6 Years‘ Jonathan Duffy and Kelly Williams, Charles D. King (Fences), George Rush (Bully).

This is an exciting cast of talented on-the-verge stars. I love Thompson and cannot wait for the rest of the world to appreciate her after she plays Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. She’ll have a significant role in Alex Garland’s upcoming sci-fi movie Annihilation as well, so I’m ready for it to be Thompson’s time. Yeun has shamefully not had much work since he left The Walking Dead, but hopefully Hollywood will recognize his talent after the buzzy Okja premieres.

Though Thompson and Yeun are arguably the bigger names in Sorry to Bother You, it sounds like Stanfield will be the star of this one. He’s mainly made a name for himself as the scene-stealing supporting character, which he does so well in Dope and as Darius in Atlanta. And let’s not forget he was excellent in his short scenes in Get Out.
