Pat Sajak was Wheel-y not a fan of those beloved, now-retired shopping rounds.

On Wednesday’s Wheel of Fortune, the host playfully mocked a contestant who championed the show’s old format, which involved players spending their winnings on a massive array of (sometimes very random) prizes that were presented on a rotating stage.

“The most boring three minutes of television,” Sajak cracked of the retro gimmick.

And he continued his rant at the close of Wednesday’s show (watch above), admitting to co-host Vanna White that he simply does not share many longtime Wheel watchers’ affection for the shopping spree days. “I don’t miss them,” he confessed. “In retrospect [you think], ‘Oh, that was kind of fun,’ but, really, it was this thing going around with the [contestant’s] head in a circle… It was really not exciting television. We like it just the way it is.”

For the record, White agreed with Sajak’s anti-shopping stance, asserting that the show “is so much better now.”

The shopping element — which you can reacquaint yourself with via the vintage clip below — was eliminated from the syndicated version in 1987.

Phillip Schofield shock: This Morning star’s ‘boring’ blast to ITV colleague revealed https://briefnews.eu/phillip-schofield-shock-this-morning-stars-boring-blast-to-itv-colleague-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/phillip-schofield-shock-this-morning-stars-boring-blast-to-itv-colleague-revealed/#respond Sat, 25 Jul 2020 13:51:43 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/phillip-schofield-shock-this-morning-stars-boring-blast-to-itv-colleague-revealed/

The ITV hosts’ hostility was reported to have emerged after Phillip feared Holly’s growing popularity would lead her to eclipse him, The Sun reported last year.

Despite their playful banter onscreen and chemistry, it was claimed that they bickered a number of times on and off set.

During one of those on-air clashes Phillip was introducing a new segment of their show – only for Holly to speak over the top of him.

After she introduced audiences to the midweek edition of ‘This Morning’, Phillip continued: “It’s a very exciting show today.

Phillip stared intensely at Holly in disbelief with his mouth slightly agape as she continued talk – without lettting him finish his sentence.

With a hurt look on his face, he snapped at her: “Am I boring you?”

Holly tried to laugh off the remark as the pair continued to broadcast on the show.

The ITV stars are currently on hiatus for summer – their presenting roles have temporarily been taken over by Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford.

Elon Musk—CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and The Boring Company—has been pitching his new tunnel-boring capabilities to curious elected officials as well as the director of CERN (the organization that owns and operates the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland).

Just a month after Musk opened up his first, rather rugged test tunnel under the SpaceX campus in Hawthorne, California, the CEO has been on Twitter floating prices and talking projects.

Last week Jeremy Buckingham, a member of Parliament in New South Wales’ Upper House, asked Musk on Twitter, “How much to build a 50km tunnel through the Blue Mountains and open up the west of our State?” Musk replied, “About $ 15M/km for a two-way high-speed transit, so probably around $ 750M plus maybe $ 50M/station.”

Video: How Star Control II was almost a much more boring game https://briefnews.eu/video-how-star-control-ii-was-almost-a-much-more-boring-game/ https://briefnews.eu/video-how-star-control-ii-was-almost-a-much-more-boring-game/#respond Thu, 27 Dec 2018 17:53:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/video-how-star-control-ii-was-almost-a-much-more-boring-game/

Welcome back to “War Stories,” an ongoing video series where we sit down with game designers and ask them to tell us about game development challenges that almost sank their projects. In previous instances, we’ve been lucky enough to get some time with the likes of Lord British (of Ultima fame) and Paul Neurath (of Thief), among others. This time, we’ve scored big: we tracked down the creators of the Star Control series—none other than Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III.

Star Control was a fun little Space Wars-alike, but it’s the second game in the series that truly became famous. Star Control II is the last—and many would say best—entry in the sorely missed Starflight-style space exploration/RPG genre that flourished in the 1980s and ’90s. That pedigree is strongly represented in the game’s form—in fact, Ford and Reiche even had the assistance of Starflight alum Greg Johnson in fleshing out aspects of SC2’s design and dialog.

Control them stars

For the few Ars readers who might not have played Star Control 2 (or its later open source re-release, The Ur-Quan Masters), it might be difficult to see why I’m so effusive in praising a game that turns 26 years old next month. And I admit to no small amount of personal bias here, as SC2 is one of my favorite games of all time. But the game is just so damn good—from the tight plotting, to the wonderfully written and varied alien dialog, and especially the beyond-addicting two player melee combat with hilariously unbalanced ships.

  • The next step for The Boring Company is to show that it can send a large number of vehicles through a tunnel at high speeds, founder Elon Musk said on Wednesday via Twitter.
  • “Next step for @BoringCompany Loop is demonstrating high throughput at high speed. Target is 4000 vehicles/hour at 155mph (250km/h),” he said.
  • Musk also said the company will offer vehicles in a range of sizes for passengers in its proposed underground tunnel system.

Elon Musk revealed what’s next for The Boring Company in a series of tweets on Wednesday, a day after he demonstrated how the underground tunnels the startup is developing would operate in Los Angeles.

“Next step for @BoringCompany Loop is demonstrating high throughput at high speed. Target is 4000 vehicles/hour at 155mph (250km/h),” he said.

  • Elon Musk announced on Friday that drilling on the first Boring Company tunnel was complete, and shared footage of the enormous drill emerging at the bottom of a huge pit.
  • Musk has previously said the first Boring Company tunnel will be ready to use on December 10.
  • The pit where the drill emerges looks like the “O’Leary Station” property the Boring Company purchased in Hawthorne, California.

Elon Musk has tweeted footage of the Boring Company’s enormous subterranean drill emerging from the ground to complete its first tunnel.

Musk tweeted jubilantly on Friday evening, saying the Boring Company “just broke through to the other side.” He followed this up with footage of the drill boring through into the bottom of what looks like a very deep pit.

The Boring Company’s first tunnel is all dug up https://briefnews.eu/the-boring-companys-first-tunnel-is-all-dug-up/ https://briefnews.eu/the-boring-companys-first-tunnel-is-all-dug-up/#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2018 20:49:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-boring-companys-first-tunnel-is-all-dug-up/

On Friday night, Boring Company CEO Elon Musk tweeted images of his tunnel-boring machine appearing to emerge from the dirt into a cavernous hole, with bystanders at the hole’s edge watching the spinning boring head.

The tunnel began in January 2017 in the parking lot of SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California. Musk’s goal has been to improve the speed and cost of tunnel boring, not only to alleviate surface-street traffic by lowering cars onto electric skates and then speeding them through a so-called “loop” system, but also to potentially dig sewer, water, and electrical tunnels for cities in a more cost-effective manner.

In late October, Musk tweeted that the more-than-two-mile-long Hawthorne tunnel would be completed by December 10, and The Boring Company would celebrate by giving rides to the public.

We’re about a month away from the planned opening of The Boring Company’s Test Tunnel in LA, and it appears progress is moving along. Elon Musk tweeted this brief video of a digging machine breaking through. Although he wasn’t specific about the location, it looks like they’ve reached O’Leary Station where the first test tunnel will end. The ‘Godot’ machine had dug its first segment on SpaceX property in June, and things have been moving along busily ever since. We’ll probably see people lining up for test rides after Black Friday.

Update: Just after this post was published, Musk tweeted again congratulating his company on completing the LA/Hawthorne tunnel.
