The federal government has decided to drop the vaccination requirement for people entering Canada, end random COVID-19 testing at airports and make the use of the ArriveCan app optional by the end of this month, a senior government source told CBC News.
]]>
The federal government’s pandemic border measures — including random testing for vaccinated travellers — could be coming to an end soon. It still might not be soon enough for many travellers and tourism operators.

Former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said President Joe Biden's administration is being "unfairly" viewed as "lax" on immigration.
"This administration, I believe, unfairly, is perceived as lax on border enforcement. In fact, we are sending back over 100,000 people a month and have been for the last two years, over 2 million people. The lesson I learned managing this issue is you've got to repeat yourself maybe 25 times before anybody will listen to you," Johnson said in an interview with CBS's "Face the Nation" host Margaret Brennan on Sunday.
The former Obama administration official said that despite criticism from GOP governors on Biden's immigration policies, his administration has been sending people back at the border and advised the current administration to "continually stress that we are, in fact, with the machinery of government about as fast as we probably can. "
Johnson added that border security is a lot tougher since he served as DHS Secretary eight years ago.
"We were dealing principally with the Northern Triangle countries Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. This problem has become hemispheric. In addition to those countries, you now have Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela who are not cooperating with us," Johnson said, adding that while border patrol capabilities have expanded, they're still struggling.
His remarks come as several GOP governors began sending migrants to northern US cities. Last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flew 50 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard. In the past several weeks, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent around 8,000 migrants to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 to New York City.
The moves were efforts to protest Biden's immigration policies. Johnson called the migrant relocation efforts a "political stunt."
"Well, there's a right way and a wrong way to do that, Margaret," Johnson said. "The wrong way is on 20 minutes notice to send people by bus or airplane to the Edgartown Airport or to mass [avenue] in front of the vice president's residence without giving local resources, NGOs, shelter's local government an opportunity to plan for how they intend to feed and clothe and house migrants."
He added: "What the governors of Florida and Texas are doing, frankly, is a political stunt and treating people like livestock."

1 | In Firefly Lane Episode 6, how did Travis manage to call back Kate after her hang-up when his phone would’ve registered Seattle Digest‘s main line, not her direct one? Would “I Will Survive” really have been the karaoke number he chose in Episode 9? And WTH was Wilson going on about in Episode 10, telling Tully that they needed to draw the coveted male demographic to the daytime talker The Girlfriend Hour?
2 | Doesn’t Y: 1883 sound less like a Yellowstone prequel and more like a Y: The Last Man spinoff?
3 | As MacGyver‘s litany of eye rolls go, does Riley instantly locating the items Mac needed from a moving airport luggage belt rank really high? Or was it the impromptu, untrained pole vault that crossed a line for you?
4 | Yeah, yeah, pandemic times and all… but couldn’t The Weeknd have thrown in a costume change or two during his Super Bowl halftime performance? And didn’t Dramamine miss an advertising opportunity with that vertiginous bit in the hall of mirrors?
5 | On Your Honor, would Kofi’s GED test results really include not only the date he took the test, but the time of day he took it?
6 | Is Snowpiercer keeping Josie alive an early frontrunner for TV’s most unnecessary plot twist of 2021?
7 | On a scale from 1 to Whiplash, how surprised were you by 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s out-of-nowhere pregnancy reveal? And were you good surprised or bad surprised?

9 | Did the problem with SPRQPoint’s software on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist remind you of Better Off Ted‘s “Racial Sensitivity” episode (and make you sad that this is still an issue more than 10 years later)?
10 | This Is Us, where to start? A laboring Madison didn’t drive herself to the hospital, did she?… Couldn’t Kevin have called Rebecca to be with Madison? They are her grandbabies…. We know Kevin was running to catch a flight, but didn’t his dumping of the car-accident victim at the ER doors nonetheless seem cold? (And given that said victim was played by The West Wing/Scandal vet Josh Malina and only had a handful of lines, how likely is it that we’ll see him again?)… Had Kevin traveled to Canada without a passport? If he did bring one, why didn’t he mention to the TSA agent that he had lost that piece of ID, too?… And while, yes, you apparently can drive from Canada to Seattle with just a driver’s license as ID, could the show have been a bit clearer about where Kevin was and when?
11 | Why would NCIS conspicuously never specify the cause of thirtysomething Breena’s surprising, off-camera death, only to have a cast member make clear that it was COVID, and in a preview Q&A?
12 | We understand that Big Sky‘s Ronald keeps to himself, but surely little Erik wasn’t the only neighbor to see him regularly and be able to identify him from the detailed crime sketch, was he? (And is the kid who played Erik as well as a kidnapping victim on Fox’s NEXT being typecast?)
13 | Did you scream/gasp when The Resident‘s Mina stapled her own wound like it was nothing?
14 | Not that Prodigal Son had any real reason for Bellamy Young’s Jessica to share a scene with Kate Burton’s Mrs. Windsor, but weren’t you hoping for that li’l Scandal reunion to happen? Also, wouldn’t Ainsley’s personal connection to the Windsor School be an enormous conflict of interest for her news story?
15 | Was Panera Bread’s Valentine’s Day commercial starring Boy Meets World‘s Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel more entertaining than half the ads that aired during the Super Bowl?
16 | Does Netflix’s excruciatingly bloated, shamelessly misleading Crime Scene: Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel set a record for most red herrings jammed into a single true crime docuseries?
17 | When Chicago Fire‘s Casey and Severide were discussing their respective relationship woes, were you thinking, “Oh, you beautiful dummies”? And during the last scene, did you think Severide or Stella was going to propose?
18 | Did Chicago P.D. need, at the very least, a throwaway line about how Burgess is balancing a full-time job as a cop with caring for a young child?
19 | Could Riverdale have done more to make Archie and the gang look different after a seven-year time jump? Didn’t anyone flag the fact that Betty’s extremely Clarice Starling-y storyline launched just a day before Clarice premiered on CBS? And since Veronica said they’re now in the year 2021 after the time jump, that means they graduated high school in… 2014?
20 | Wait, did Young Sheldon’s first three seasons span just two school years? The pilot took place in the fall of 1989, and Thursday’s episode referenced The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Season 2 premiere, which aired September 1991.
21 | Prior to showing up in this week’s B Positive for the first time in god knows how many episodes, had you forgotten You’re the Worst’s Kether Donohue was a series regular? At what point are they going to give Leanne something to do?
22 | Why does Last Man Standing insist on doing storylines about grandchildren Sarah and Evelyn if they’re never going to appear on screen? And did you, too, suffer second-hand embarrassment when Krista Marie Yu started rapping in the cold open?
23 | Was there a more cringeworthy moment on TV this week than The Unicorn‘s Wade calling new girlfriend Shannon by his dead wife’s name?
24 | Couldn’t The Stand‘s Tom Cullen have gotten a teensy bit more on-screen credit for rescuing Stu and bringing him back to Boulder? A “thank you” from Frannie, at least?
25 | Which moment from WandaVision Episode 6 did you find more chilling: that unsettling Yo-Magic commercial, or the brief glimpse of Dead Pietro? And now that the show has moved into 2000s sitcoms, are you a little bummed we never got a meta reference to Full House?

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan was keen to find out why the government had not put testing in place for those arriving in the UK. Nadhim Zahawi explained they felt it was “pointless” testing arrivals when they got to the UK which left Morgan furious as he demanded to know why the UK was not following the same steps as other countries when up to 40 million people who could have the virus have been allowed into the country without being tested.
When asked how many people were tested at the border when entering the UK, Zahawi remarked: “The answer is you don’t take a test on the border because it’s pointless.”
“So the answer is zero,” both Reid and Morgan hit back.
Zahawi continued: “I know, I know that Piers, I’m listening to you my friend, just hear me out for a second.”
“You can laugh but let me explain why it’s not a laughing matter,” Morgan erupted.

“Hang on, you just confirmed Michael Give didn’t know, which is the truth, it’s zero. We don’t test anyone at our border when they come in.
“Secondly, we have never required anybody to have a test and to test negative before they get on a plane to our country unlike almost every other country in the world.
“I simply ask again, why? Why given that we know many people must be coming in every day and have the virus?”
Zahawi hit back: “Because if you ask the scientist Chris Whitty and Dr Van-Tam, they will tell you that at the border is near pointless.
“That person may be showing no symptoms, test negative and two days later test positive.”
“So why do other countries insist on us taking tests before we fly?” Morgan asked. “Why don’t we do that?”
Zahawi answered: “All I’m saying to you is the Secretary of State for Transport is looking at these things.”
“I’m asking you as a government minister in charge of vaccinations to try and thwart the virus, why have we never throughout the pandemic, required people to take a test and test negative before they fly into this country? I don’t know the answer?”
“I’m asking you as a government minister in charge of vaccinations to try and thwart the virus, why have we never throughout the pandemic, required people to take a test and test negative before they fly into this country? I don’t know the answer?
“Is it the scientist telling you that doesn’t work. If that’s the case then why does every other country insist on it?”
Zahawi replied: “Well, as I said to you, doing that test at the border, would be near pointless.”
“I’m not asking you that!” Morgan erupted. “A, I don’t agree with that, I think it’s nonsense, and secondly, I’m asking why we have never required people to take a test within say 72 hours as I believe is the government policy you’re looking at.”

Later in the interview, Morgan was even more frustrated when Zahawi was unable to tell him how many people had been tested coming into the UK.
“I haven’t got that number,” he explained as Morgan raged: “You don’t know either!
“We did ask your colleague yesterday, he didn’t know, he said he’d get the answers for us. You’re the next government minister on the caab rank, you’ve come on the show and you don’t know the answer either. At least watch the programme.”
Zahawi desperately tried to defend himself insisting Morgan was “being unfair” but the presenter hit back: “I’m not being unfair.
“I’m simply asking you why none of you know the answers to these simple questions.”
Speaking about the coronavirus vaccine roll out plan, Zahawi said: “We rolled out in hospital hubs with the new vaccine.
“The Chief Medical Officer quite rightly advises that you begin in hospitals just to make sure that everything works properly, then into GPs, what are called primary care network, so five or six GPs covering an area of about 50,000 people come together, decide who will lead, others will support, they’re very good in vaccinating the over 80s and those in care homes – the top two categories of the nine categories that the joint committee have set us as the target.
“Then we roll into mass vaccination centres, with stadiums and sports halls and of course the community pharmacies and independent pharmacies where we think there are gaps.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.

From western California to eastern Texas, across four US states and 24 counties, the 1,933-mile US-Mexico border criss-crosses arid desert, rugged mountains, and winding rivers.
For 654 of those miles, fencing separates the two countries from each other.
The 7.3 million people who live in the border counties on each side of the line have watched for years as security grew tighter and illegal crossings tapered off.
In just the last 12 years, the US government built the barriers, deployed troops, and started using advanced surveillance technology — all in an effort to tame and control some of the wildest and remotest land in the United States.
In an effort to make good on campaign promises to “build that wall,” President Donald Trump has refused to back down on his demand that Congress allocate $ 5.7 billion for the project, plunging the government into a weeks-long shutdown after Senate Democrats refused to back a spending bill with the wall funding.
Democrats, who now control the House of Representatives, have long opposed Trump’s wall and placed the blame for the shutdown on Trump.
The shutdown comes amid controversy over US immigration and border policies, after two young migrant children died in Border Patrol custody last month. The deaths also come on the heels of outrage over the Trump administration’s family separation policy over the summer, which split thousands of children from their parents.
With public outrage has growing toward the government’s immigration policies, it’s worth taking a look at the complexity of the borderlands to understand the daunting task of securing them.
From the Pacific Ocean in the west to the Gulf of Mexico in the east, here’s what the entire US-Mexico border looks like.

US border patrol have deployed tear gas against migrants in Tijuana, just across San Diego. The authorities argue they repelled an attack by “violent” rock-throwers. Media reports suggest the action was uncalled for, however.
Videos and photos circulated by various media outlets show plumes of yellowish smoke billowing up from the fence separating the US territory from Mexico. In footage provided by Reuters, a man is seen picking up and throwing a tear gas canister back over the barrier while a group of Spanish-speaking migrants cheers and whoops loudly. As the cloud drifts closer to those gathered, migrants can be seen covering their faces and fleeing, with some choking on the fumes.
The incident took place on the New Year’s Eve, with migrants telling Reuters that they expected security to be lax during the first night of 2019 due to celebrations.
However, it turned out not to be the case: as the migrants prepared to climb the fence, US Customs and Border Protection agents retaliated with tear gas and arrested 25 people, including two teenagers.
In its statement following the incident, CBP said that the volleys were not aimed at migrants attempting the crossing, but at rock-throwers who prevented the agents from helping the children being dropped over the border fence.
“Border Patrol agents witnessed members of the group attempt to lift toddler sized children up and over the concertina wire and having difficulty accomplishing the task in a safe manner.”
“Agents were not in a position to safely assist the children due to the large number of rocks being thrown at them.”
The border patrol said they dispersed “smoke, pepper spray and CS gas to a position upwind of the rock throwers.” CBP argued that none of the crossing migrants, including children, suffered from the effects of gas, as the targeted perpetrators stood further away from the fence.
“The deployments were not directed at the migrants attempting entry on the US side or at the fence line,” the agency insisted.
Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Katie Waldman accused “a violent mob of migrants” of “attacking” the border patrol force with “projectiles,” saying the agents used “the minimum force necessary” to thwart the attack on the border and defend themselves. CBP estimated that about 150 migrants attempted to sneak into the US illegally.
However, several media outlets, including AP and Reuters, contradicted the version of events presented by the US officials.
A witness cited by Reuters, said he did not observe any rocks being hurled at the agents, but saw a migrant being hit by an object looking like a gas canister.
AP, citing its own photographer at the scene, reported that the rocks were launched at the border agents by migrants only after they were pelted with tear gas. AP reported that, contrary to CBP’s report, some of the canisters did hurt the migrants, women and children among them.
Last time the US border patrol resorted to tear gas to fend off an avalanche of migrants trying to break through the fence in November, it sparked a massive backlash after videos and photos of women and children as young as three coughing and fleeing in disarray went viral.

Waldman, however, used the incident on January 1, to prop up US President Donald Trump’s idea of a $ 5bn border fence on the border with Mexico.
“Congress needs to fully fund the border wall, amend the TVPRA, and end the Flores Settlement Agreement that encourages and rewards this type of lawlessness by migrants at the border,” Waldman said.
Trump refused to back down on his border wall project, despite it being the cause a partial government shutdown that has continued into its 11th day. Trump instead accused Democrats of “not caring” about US security and inviting “all the crimes and drugs that Open Borders bring!”
With little time left until Democrats officially take over the House on Thursday, Trump reportedly called for a border security briefing at a White House on Wednesday to discuss the stalemate with leaders of Republicans and Democrats in both congressional chambers.

With no compromise in sight on his border wall, US President Donald Trump is reaching out to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, calling a meeting with Congressional leaders in a bid to end the government shutdown now in its 11th day.
Trump invited a bipartisan group of Congressional leaders to the White House to negotiate a conclusion to the partial shutdown sparked by clashes over funding his border wall, tweeting a tentative peace offering: “Let’s make a deal?“
Border Security and the Wall “thing” and Shutdown is not where Nancy Pelosi wanted to start her tenure as Speaker! Let’s make a deal?
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 1, 2019
Eight Republicans and Eight Democrats from both houses of Congress are set to meet in the White House Wednesday, a congressional aide told the Wall Street Journal. The meeting is expected to include a briefing on border security from the Department of Homeland Security, suggesting Trump is not planning to back off the wall push anytime soon, though the wall itself has lately looked a lot less…wall-y.
House Democrats reportedly plan to end the shutdown by passing a pair of government-funding bills without money for the wall when the 2019 session of Congress opens on Thursday with Pelosi as Speaker. The Senate, however, is still controlled by Republicans, and it’s unclear how Pelosi plans to get around them.
…Remember this. Throughout the ages some things NEVER get better and NEVER change. You have Walls and you have Wheels. It was ALWAYS that way and it will ALWAYS be that way! Please explain to the Democrats that there can NEVER be a replacement for a good old fashioned WALL!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 1, 2019
The shutdown has a ways to go before it surpasses the current record of 21 days, but federal employees are already growing restive, with 800,000 furloughed or working without pay. Given the one-dimensional tenor of Trump’s New Year’s Eve tweets – “Please explain to the Democrats that there can NEVER be a replacement for a good old fashioned WALL!” – this game of political “chicken” may drag on for a while yet.
