The Amped-Up Ancient Booze Crashing Chicago's Craft Beer Party https://briefnews.eu/the-amped-up-ancient-booze-crashing-chicagos-craft-beer-party/ https://briefnews.eu/the-amped-up-ancient-booze-crashing-chicagos-craft-beer-party/#respond Sat, 03 Nov 2018 07:34:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-amped-up-ancient-booze-crashing-chicagos-craft-beer-party/ Chicago is a beer town, and perhaps no part of the city slugs suds like the southwest side. Seven nights a week, crowds flock to a three-mile strip of Western Avenue in the neighborhood of Beverly where restaurants and Irish pubs — emphasis on the pubs — dot every block. There’s beer and Irish whiskey galore, of course. But there’s a new booze on the block appealing to the craft-alcohol set: mead.

Wild Blossom Meadery and Winery is Chicago’s only meadery on the Northern Illinois Wine Trail. And we’re not talking your standard mead. Wild Blossom is taking the ancient honeyed beverage to new places, establishing itself as a Midwest pioneer in sustainability, production and creative flavors — like one spicy version that might just send your eyes somersaulting backward.

The Wolfcraft — a hoppy, sparkling mead with blood orange — pays homage to both beer and champagne.

With roots in ancient Africa, mead may be the oldest alcoholic drink in human history. Hunter-gatherers in the savanna, the story goes, stumbled upon pools of water containing the fermenting remains of fallen, honey-filled beehives. What probably began with the shy taste of a dipped finger sparked a honey wine love affair. Varieties of the drink now appear everywhere from Lithuania and Finland to Mexico, northern China and Ethiopia. Now, an American public with a growing taste for craft beers and spirits is creating a market for craft mead.

“With mead, we can manipulate it to reflect any style that we’re looking for,” says Greg Fischer, founder and owner of Wild Blossom. The mildly sour Cran Apple Cyser is an apple-infused mead, and Pirates Blood, a hot chili-infused version, is smoky, fiery and sweet (the appropriate skull-shaped bottle retails for $ 19.95). The Wolfcraft — a hoppy, sparkling mead with blood orange — pays homage to both beer and champagne. Then there’s the Charlatan, a dry blueberry mead aged in red wine barrels, and the bourbon barrel-aged Sweet Desire ($ 35.95, 16 percent ABV) that delivers autumn in a glass. At the winery, with its Finger Lakes-esque backyard patio bordering the shaded corner of the Dan Ryan Woods forest preserve, a six-pour flight will set you back $ 12 to $ 15.

Wild Blossom’s meads are made with purified water from Lake Michigan and honey that hails from a variety of local sources: five hives ranging in location from the roof of the Marriott on the “Magnificent Mile” to Indiana’s Ogden Dunes. Each bottle of the sweet, alcoholic final product leads to 2 million flowers pollinated in the area, says Fischer. In addition to meads, Wild Blossom also produces a range of Chicago-themed wines, like South Side Syrah and Chicago Bulls Blood.

The company opened for business nearly 30 years ago as a winery … in a Prohibition-era dry zone. Fischer relied on the skills he had learned as a boy, helping his Italian immigrant grandfather make wine and mead in the family basement. In 2017, Fischer opened the doors to a full-scale meadery, equipped with a tasting room, a 14,000-square-foot backyard and a production space — this time in a building just outside the dry zone.

Still, in beer country, Wild Blossom feels like a hidden gem to those in the know. The new location is helping to change that, as is word of mouth. “People appreciate a local product and our willingness to experiment,” says Fischer. But the new appetite for mead goes to show that it’s not just beer leading the craft craze, at least on Chicago’s South Side.

Amped-Up Ancient Booze Crash Chicago's Craft Beer Party https://briefnews.eu/amped-up-ancient-booze-crash-chicagos-craft-beer-party/ https://briefnews.eu/amped-up-ancient-booze-crash-chicagos-craft-beer-party/#respond Sun, 28 Oct 2018 05:12:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amped-up-ancient-booze-crash-chicagos-craft-beer-party/ Chicago is a beer town, and perhaps no part of the city slugs suds like the southwest side.

Red, white & booze: 37mn Americans are 'binge drinkers,' CDC study says https://briefnews.eu/red-white-booze-37mn-americans-are-binge-drinkers-cdc-study-says/ https://briefnews.eu/red-white-booze-37mn-americans-are-binge-drinkers-cdc-study-says/#respond Sun, 18 Mar 2018 00:30:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/red-white-booze-37mn-americans-are-binge-drinkers-cdc-study-says/ Americans are no strangers to boozing it up, according to a new study that found that one in six US adults are binge drinkers. Alcohol enthusiasts in the US are chugging a collective 17.5 billion “binge drinks” per year.

The study, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, found that 37.4 million Americans, or one out of every six adults, binge drink about once a week. They drink an average of about seven drinks per binge, meaning they chug a collective 17.5 billion drinks each year. That boils down to about 470 binge drinks, per binge drinker, annually.

“This study shows that binge drinkers are consuming a huge number of drinks per year, greatly increasing their chances of harming themselves and others,” study co-author Robert Brewer, lead researcher in the CDC’s alcohol program, said in a statement.

The results came after Brewer and his team examined CDC data from the center’s 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The team used the data to calculate annual estimates of binge drinking, which is defined as men drinking five or more drinks over the course of two hours, or women drinking four or more drinks over the same period. A single drink is defined as a shot of hard liquor, a five-ounce glass of wine, or a 12-ounce glass of beer at five percent alcohol.

Once the team examined the data, they divided the findings by age, sex, education, race/ethnicity, household income, and state. They found that binge drinking was most common among adults aged 18 to 34, but more than half of all binge drinks consumed were from adults ages 35 years and older. In other words, older drinkers don’t binge drink as often, but they tend to really hit the bottle when they do.

When males and females were compared side-by-side, it was revealed that men are much more likely to be binge drinkers. In fact, four out of five binge drinks were found to be consumed by males. Income also played a role, as the researchers found that people with lower household incomes (less than $ 25,000 annually) and lower educational levels (less than high school) “consumed substantially more” than those with higher salaries and education levels.

Comparing the race of binge drinkers, the researchers found the biggest drinkers were non-Hispanic whites (19.2 percent) and American Indians/Alaska Natives (17.9 percent). Most binge drinkers were located in Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Hawaii. Meanwhile, Washington DC, New Jersey, New York, and Washington had the fewest numbers of binge drinkers.

The results demonstrate there is a need to focus on the prevention of excessive drinking, according to Brewer. “The findings also show the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to prevent binge drinking, focusing on reducing both the number of times people binge drink and the amount they drink when they binge,” he said.

It is worth noting that America’s binge drinking is likely worse than the study implies, as the BRFSS relies on self-reported data from a phone survey, and study respondents are thought to underreport their drinking habits. The CDC study, which was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine on Friday, was based on a survey from 2015 that asked around 400,00 Americans over the age of 18 about their alcohol consumption “in the past 30 days.”

Binge drinking is responsible for more than half of the 88,000 alcohol-attributable deaths in the US each year, according to the CDC. It is also the cause of 75 percent of the $ 249 billion in economic costs associated with excessive drinking in the US.

Beer buddies: Merkel sends Putin bottles of German booze, Russian leader reveals https://briefnews.eu/beer-buddies-merkel-sends-putin-bottles-of-german-booze-russian-leader-reveals/ https://briefnews.eu/beer-buddies-merkel-sends-putin-bottles-of-german-booze-russian-leader-reveals/#respond Sun, 11 Mar 2018 16:19:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/beer-buddies-merkel-sends-putin-bottles-of-german-booze-russian-leader-reveals/ Beer enthusiasts the world over appreciate German varieties, and the Russian president is no exception. Chancellor Angela Merkel even sends Vladimir Putin a few bottles of Saxony-brewed pilsner, the president has revealed.

“From time to time, Angela sends me a few bottles of Radeberger beer,” the Russian leader said in the documentary film ‘Putin,’ made by VGTRK channel, referring to the German chancellor by her first name. When he was a KGB agent, Putin used to visit “one of the best breweries” in the town of Radeberg with his family during his years in Eastern Germany, where he was stationed in 1980s, he said in the book ‘First Person.’

But apparently the German variety is not the only ‘beer of choice’ for the Russian leader. Putin also shared a beer with then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev while visiting Moscow’s popular ‘Zhiguli’ bar.

Even with a sip of good beer at the end of a long day, leading Russia is no easy task, according to German ex-Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who also featured in the film.

“I’ve always said there’re two jobs I would never want to take. First is the place of the Pope, another is the position of Russian president. The need to hold this enormous country together is definitely the most difficult thing to imagine in politics,” Schroeder said.

You can legally drink your own booze on a flight — here’s how https://briefnews.eu/you-can-legally-drink-your-own-booze-on-a-flight-heres-how/ https://briefnews.eu/you-can-legally-drink-your-own-booze-on-a-flight-heres-how/#respond Sun, 28 Jan 2018 08:47:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-can-legally-drink-your-own-booze-on-a-flight-heres-how/ Flight attendant drink serviceRanglen/Shutterstock

  • There are ways of legally bringing — and drinking — your own booze on a flight, according to frequent flier Gilbert Ott.
  • On his blog God Save the Points, Ott provides the do’s and don’ts of making it happen.
  • Whatever you do, never try and serve yourself.

Unless you’re flying first class, chances are you’re used to only getting one or two complimentary drinks on a flight — or at least having to pay for alcohol, even if it is just those mini bottles of wine available.

But, according to frequent traveller and air miles guru Gilbert Ott of God Save the Points, it’s actually possible to legally bring – and drink — your own booze on board. Here’s what you need to know:

You can make good use of the 100ml bottle rule…

While an entire bottle of whiskey won’t make it through security, there’s an easy way to get a smaller amount of your favourite tipple through.

“You’re probably aware that liquid containers may not exceed 100ml,” Ott writes. “Same goes for perfume, cosmetics, etc.

“Fortunately, mini alcohol bottles fit into the sizing requirements, and you can bring multiple mini bottles through security. It’s absolutely fine. Just put them in a clear plastic bag, just as you would any other liquid items.”

…or go shopping at duty-free.

Your second option is shopping for booze once you get into the airport lounge — as long as you’re flying direct.

“If you’re travelling internationally, you could absolutely buy a bottle of wine or Champagne (anything you’ll consume entirely on the plane) on your next flight,” Ott writes, warning: “Don’t buy from duty-free if you have a connection where you’ll need to re-clear security before consuming. You’ll lose it!”

Whatever you do, don’t try to serve yourself

“You CANNOT serve yourself on the plane. Any plane. No. You can’t,” Ott stresses. “You CAN however politely ask a member of the cabin crew if they would not mind serving you the liquor you brought on board.

“JetBlue famously made light of this policy last year — and we know many have successfully done this on other airlines around the world. There are no guarantees a crew will say YES — but this is real — and this happens.”

Be prepared to drink the whole bottle

While you might get a nice flight attendant willing to open your own bottle for you, you better be ready to drink the whole thing.

“Don’t ask the crew to open anything which will not be finished on board. And please, be discrete,” Ott writes. “The crew must dispose of anything open and unconsumed at the end of the flight. For that reason, it’s best to keep things simple.”

Don’t overdo it

According to Ott, the crew have final say on your ability to consume alcohol — so be wise in your consumption.

“If they decide you look far too ready for midnight karaoke — they have full right to cut you off,” he writes. “In each and every circumstance — arguing with them is going to go poorly for you, so just don’t. Just sit back relax, enjoy the flight and politely persuade someone to pour you a lovely drink. You’ll be on the ground before you know it.”

JUST four per cent of the population drink almost a third of the alcohol sold in England, according to healthcare data. The figure emerged yesterday in a Parliamentary committee debate on a 50p minimum unit price on alcohol.
