Morale is the confidence, enthusiasm and discipline of a person or a group. Many factors combine to create or destroy team morale.
Military organizations know this. They know that a lack of morale hinders everything, which for warfare can mean the loss of a nation. This reality causes the military to boost the morale of every soldier and every squad at every opportunity.
But it doesn’t stop with the soldiers. Military organizations also maintain and enhance the morale of the commanders, wives, husbands and children of soldiers, and of the nation in general. If they didn’t, a soldier or his team dodging bullets in a warzone hellscape might lose “the confidence, enthusiasm, and discipline” necessary to survive.
Since teamwork in the workplace is critical to a successful business, your teams’ morale is critical as well.
And as you may have guessed from my soldier example, it involves more than just individual workers in a team. It involves the individual, the team, the department, other departments, the division, the entire company, the community outside of the company and even the spouses and children of employees.
You need to make as many people working, and supporting workers, excited about the mission and the outcomes.
As a leader, you cannot leave this to chance. It is one of the Tough Things First that you must do. It is a daily task for a CEO, a priority because when team morale falters, so does the team. And when the team falters, so does the company.
Here are 9 tips that are helpful in maintaining and growing morale in your company:
Many people rightly live by the creed that “the family that plays together stays together,” because it is true. The same applies to any group of people who, like families, spend a great deal of time together.
You cannot know, and thus cannot like and trust a person wholly if you only know one aspect of them. When you only “work” with people, those people become an object of labor, not happiness.
Get your teams out of the work environment for social interactions. It can be a Friday beer bust, a company picnic, or even a formal social event. Just put the same people, and preferably people from different but cooperating departments someplace where “work” is not being done.
All organizations tend to create silos, most often around teams, be it a small work group or a global division. This is quite natural, but such organizational silos stymie teamwork and team building.
Silos are literally barriers to organizational effectiveness, and thus barriers to morale. It is best to prevent silos from happening rather than tearing them down, though the latter must occur once silos arise.
When people are brought together from across organizations, and they discuss their needs in the framework of the company mission, the need to aid and cooperate helps dissolve silos.
A mutual mission is always the key to people working together, including entire divisions cooperating and supporting one another.
Regular meetings between organizational units fosters teamwork.
“Regular” is the key concept. One-time meetings to force alignment have a short lifetime of effectiveness.
But regular meetings, where the issues of the week/month/quarter/year are placed on the table help people see what is hindering success. Your purchasing team needs to meet regularly with your manufacturing team. Your engineering teams need to meet with your marketing teams.
Anywhere one teams’ work affects other teams is an ongoing opportunity for regular meetings.
People and teams like praise, and they like being recognized for their effort. It sounds simple, but authentic praise is more uplifting than a bonus check.
Rewarding an organization that demonstrates good teamwork encourages the same across other parts of the company. In some companies, cross-functional cooperation can become a competitive streak.
The goal is cross-functional harmony – all parts of the company working cooperatively, and thus raising everybody’s morale in the process.
Regular company activities foster and develop teamwork. Why? Because humans need to know people in order to trust them to be part of any team.
If you took several employees and put them on a team for tug-of-war at the company picnic, they would understand that they can count on the others to (pun intended) pull their weight.
Putting employees who should know, but don’t know one another together on a personal basis expands their willingness to engage one another in their work, and that willingness improves morale.
At Micrel, the semiconductor company I founded and led for 37 years, we facilitated employee recognition from across silos. In other words, employees received recognition not from their teammates – they did that too – but from other departments.
We had a program to nominate an “Employee of the Quarter”, the nominations coming from a different department than the one in which the employee works. But this process need not be restricted to individuals.
Entire teams can be recognized in the same way. This concept could be expanded to “Organization of the Quarter” with nominations by other groups within the company organizations.
Why restrict a meeting to just people on a team? Have weekly meetings and invite representatives from each organization to attend.
Imagine an engineering team meeting with a representative or two from design, manufacturing, marketing, sales, HR, etc. Expand this even more by conducting “company coordination meetings” whereby cross-team representatives meet to tackle company-wide issues.
This worked very well at Micrel. Just be sure to change-up the invitees, so everyone attends one of these meetings at some point. It is this cycling that makes every employee feel they are contributing and that they are part of the company, not just their work group.
Encourage employees to answer their phone, their emails, any communication, by saying “how can I help you?” Those five simple words change the nature of every interaction, by making assistance the goal.
Knowing that you are likely to be helped, raises your morale because you never become pre-programmed for defeat.
When you make this a company-wide habit, the spirit of helping first prevails. And when every employee knows that everyone in a company is instantly willing, perhaps even anxious to help, morale expands geometrically.
Encourage everyone to learn employees’ first names. This may sound trivial, but familiarity breeds trust.
This minor intimacy is essential to breaking down barriers, and it simultaneously boosts morale.
Morale is raised or impeded, boosted or barricaded. It is as important to recognize those things that prevent morale as it is to raise morale.
Recognizing each aspect of morale – confidence, enthusiasm, discipline – their current conditions, and what is making each aspect less than it should be tells you what needs to be done.
For example, morale can fade simply through inattention. If workers don’t think they are appreciated for their effort, then their morale suffers. In our analysis of this particular ailment, a boost – even simple praise – is called for. There were no impediments to morale, but there was a lack of encouragement from management.
On the other side of the coin might be a situation where there is a lack of support for the mission and associated tasks from other groups. This lack of cross-organizational support likely comes from silos – self-created isolation between groups – which can cause morale to suffer greatly due to the feeling of “we have to do this all on our own”. This barrier needs removing to keep morale from rapidly sinking.
External factors too can be a psychological barrier to morale. If changes in your market, your competition, or the economy generate doubt among employees, you need to enhance their belief in survival while knocking down the perceived barriers to success.
Most importantly though is teamwork. The sense of working together is very important for morale.
When an employee strives to complete the organization’s mission, but feels like everyone else is not on the same team – that they are creating barriers and failing in their esprit de corps – morale is impossible.
It is your company’s leadership that has the responsibility to focus everyone on the same mission, clear the barriers to achievement, and reward the team effort. Combined, this creates unbeatable morale.

Nintendo has seen a big boost, based on the back of their latest Pokemon Switch reveals.
Having announced their plans for three new Nintendo games, all of which will be available on Switch, the company’s stock saw a bump.
Since the Pokemon Press Conference on Wednesday, Nintendo stock rose on the Tokyo market.
It’s a great sign that the markets back the idea of producing a wider variety of Pokemon games over the coming years.
This may also be backed up by the surprise announcement of Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu jumping up the Amazon charts.
While not the full-blooded Pocket Monster experience fans wanted to see in 2018, it the nonetheless has created plenty of interest.
And while both Let’s Go, Pikachu and Let’s Go, Eevee are now second to a PlayStation Plus bundle, it’s fair to predict that they will sell well.
They have a release date set for November 16, 2018, and will be followed by an even bigger Pokemon game in 2019.
The “core” Pokemon Switch games promised at last year’s E3 event is still in development and will arrive in the second-half of 2019.
While it might be disappointing for some fans to have to wait until then to play the new RPG offering, it will certainly be worth the wait.
Not much is known about the upcoming release, but fans can probably rest easy knowing it won’t be watered down.
While in Let’s Go, Pikachu you catch Pokemon in the fashion of Pokemon Go, this probably won’t be the case in the core game.
Nintendo has no need to try and open the Pokemon franchise up to more casual players, now that there are several different games to try out.
Here’s more on some of those new Pokemon Games being released in 2018:
Pokemon Quest – out now on Switch as free download, coming to Mobile later this year.
“You’ll start out your journey by selecting your first partner Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, or Eevee. Your choice can have a big impact on your adventures, especially as you take on the initial stages.
“Each Pokémon in Pokémon Quest has an Attack stat and a HP stat. Attack indicates how much damage they’ll deal, while HP is a measure of how much damage they can endure. The stats for your potential first partner Pokémon run the gamut—Charmander is strong offensively, Bulbasaur is very defensive, and Eevee provides an equal balance of both. It’s up to you if you’ll pick your favorite or the one that fits your desired strategy.
“Unlike some other Pokémon games, your Pokémon’s type won’t cause it to take more or less damage from specific attack types in Pokémon Quest, but you can gain bonus Team Strength by including Pokémon of a specific type on your team. Each first partner Pokémon will make one early area easier, but you may find some types of Pokémon—and the bonus they provide—are less common than others, like Charmander’s Fire type.”
Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee coming to Nintendo Switch in November, 2018.
“Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! bring the experience of a classic Pokémon RPG to Nintendo Switch with gameplay that is easily approachable for newcomers to the series, but is also deep enough to keep veteran Trainers on their toes.
“The games also have two-player simultaneous play, so you can take the journey with a friend! And there’s a deep connection between Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and Pokémon GO, so fans of the hit mobile game will find even more to enjoy.
“The practice of catching Pokémon has been changed dramatically from previous titles. Now you can use your Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con to toss a Poké Ball at your target with one hand, either by pressing a button or flicking your wrist. With fewer buttons and intuitive action, it’s never been simpler.”
Infants who are given antacids like Zantac or Pepcid are more likely to develop childhood allergies, perhaps because these drugs may alter their gut bacteria, a new large study suggests.

Ubisoft acquired Atlanta-based developer Blue Mammoth Studio yesterday, adding more multiplayer online expertise to its portfolio. As part of the deal, it also now owns Blue Mammoth’s online Super Smash Bros.-esque game Brawlhalla.
“The team at Blue Mammoth Games is expert at developing and running scalable, competitive, multiplayer online games, and they’ll be a great addition to Ubisoft’s network of studios,” Ubisoft NCSA president Laurent Detoc said in a statement.
Ubisoft has several successes in its online multiplayer titles like Rainbow Six Siege, which has attracted 25 million players. Overall, the developer’s Tom Clancy series has around 60 million players across different games in the franchise. And Blue Mammoth’s own multiplayer online indie game has picked up a fan base.
The free-to-play brawler Brawlhalla is one of the top 100 most played games on Steam. It supports online multiplayer, as well as up to eight players locally. It also has features such as single player mode and ranked battles. Blue Mammoth has been cultivating an esports scene for it, partnering with Dreamhack on hosting the Brawlhalla World Championship.
“We’re looking forward to leveraging Ubisoft’s expertise and resources to continue developing and supporting Brawlhalla for the long term, and to benefiting from their help in bringing the game to new players,” said Blue Mammoth founders Matthew Woomer and Lincoln Hamilton in a statement.
Ubisoft also recently snapped up mobile developer 1492 Studio, which specializes in episodic games like Is It Love?

Entering Friday night’s fixture in ninth and on equal points with the last- placed Phoenix, the Mariners sorely needed all three in Gosford. While they hardly put their Kiwi visitors to the sword, the laboured victory lifts Paul Okon’s battlers into eighth and, more importantly, stops them slipping rock bottom for the first time since round one.
The Phoenix clearly arrived with a plan to sit off and counter-attack, but were victims of their own trepidation and demonstrated little in the way of cohesive moments in transition.
Sarpreet Singh, in his second career start, took a wild skyward swing while Dylan Fox headed well over the bar in Wellington’s only real chances before Roy Krishna sparked to life after the break.
The Mariners enjoyed most possession and worked into good areas but rarely threatened with any real certainty.
De Silva’s provider Andrew Hoole shone as the Mariners’ primary attacking outlet and marginally missed a drive from distance, while Alan Baro and Wout Brama were easily denied by Tando Velaphi.
The hosts’ persistence finally paid off close to halftime.
Hoole engaged Trent Buhagiar in a lovely one-two before cleverly picking out De Silva’s run, the playmaker catching the ball on the volley and flicking home off the outside of his boot.
Had the Phoenix exercised more conviction, they might have left with something, but Darije Kalezic’s side made it easy for a Mariners outfit who only last week blew a two-goal lead over 10-man Adelaide.
Krishna rattled the crossbar – though a teammate was offside – and then embarked on a promising solo run only to find the side netting.
The Mariners were searching for a second goal and Hoole’s 69th-minute free-kick appeared to be it, until substitute Blake Powell’s header hit the upright and was somehow cleared off the line by Andrew Durante.
That turned into a Phoenix breakaway and a brilliant cross-goal Krishna ball as Andrija Kaluderovic gave the side netting another workout.
Worryingly, Dutch midfielder Tom Hiariej was subbed off 15 minutes from time with an apparent pelvic injury, as the Mariners dug in to weather a late Wellington onslaught.
CBS’ Wisdom of the Crowd wrapped its 13-episode run on Sunday with 5.9 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating, adding a handful of eyeballs week-to-week while holding onto its series-low demo.
Leading out of that, NCIS: Los Angeles (9 mil/1.0) drew its largest audience since its May finale while ticking up to its best demo number since Oct. 22. Madam Secretary (7.1 mil/0.7) delivered a best-since-premiere audience while up a tenth in the demo.
Over on Fox: Leading out of the Vikings’ last-minute win over the Saints (which at its peak drew north of 35 million viewers), The Simpsons (8.6 mil/3.5), Bob’s Burgers (5.1 mil/2.2), Family Guy‘s 300th episode (3.9 mil/1.7) and Last Man on Earth (3.7 mil/1.3) all hit season highs, pending adjustment.

Enlarge / Xbox One X. But what good is a monolithic box without some software to test on it? (credit: Microsoft)
Our review of the Xbox One X was as comprehensive as we could get at the time. Microsoft set our embargo roughly one week after our systems arrived, along with an assurance: the system’s “enhanced” catalog of major games, designed to tap into the X’s beefy, $ 500 spec, would be ready ahead of the embargo.
That wasn’t quite the case. We tested roughly a dozen enhanced games (and whether older games benefited from X power) ahead of our deadline, which was enough to declare a few things: what the system is capable of, its general value, and the issue of relying on patches that only a fraction of Xbox owners will tap into. As we said, publishers barely touched Kinect, an add-on that used to ship with every Xbox One. It’s a bit apples-and-oranges, but we still have to ask: will developers devote more effort for something with less adoption?
More patches have rolled out in the days between our embargo lifted and the system’s public launch, and, after testing them, we wanted to give you a fuller sense of what to expect from Xbox One X. In short: after adding impressions of another dozen high-profile games on Xbox One X, our system review is unchanged. Some games get incredible, obviously apparent boosts on 4K sets. Others don’t. And while the console is great—and sometimes stronger than PS4 Pro—your purchase decision should probably hinge more on the games you already own, the games you’d like to own, and whether you own a 4K TV.
]]>Their professional partnership has just passed the five-year mark and it’s claimed that one in 50 women now owns a bra from Rosie’s range – making it the 133-year-old store’s best-selling line of all time.
While much of the M&S business is struggling and profits have nosedived recently, the deep affection British women rthave for its bras and knickers shows no sign of cooling. The company, which began selling underwear in 1926, sells 45 bras at its stores every minute and it’s Rosie who is helping to drive the boom.
In the past the likes of Twiggy, Dame Helen Mirren and Dannii Minogue have been recruited to model clothes but in Rosie and David Gandy, her equivalent in the menswear department, M&S currently has two of the world’s highest paid models on its books.
The retailer is trying desperately to entice younger women and shed its image of being fuddy-duddy when it comes to fashion. Reaching out to a generation which regards M&S as the place mums buy their pants is a constant challenge.
So Rosie, who now also promotes perfume, sportswear, cosmetics and swimwear for M&S, is regarded as the ideal foil for the company.
M&S
Rosie’s underwear range is M&S’s best-selling line in its 133-year history
Kate Calvert, a retail analyst at Investec, says: “Lingerie has been a key performer for M&S at a time when other parts of the business have not been doing particularly well and it is losing market share.”
Earlier this year M&S reported a slide in clothing and homeware sales of almost 6 per cent, but Kate adds: “One in three women still wears M&S underwear. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is very influential and relevant in the world of fashion and it’s a relationship that will bring in customers. She’s also very active on social media, which appeals to M&S.”
Rosie, who has also modelled underwear for Victoria’s Secret and Agent Provocateur, says that she feels quite comfortable with images of her wearing only her smalls being emblazoned everywhere.
“Lingerie is the ultimate feminine buy and I love that feeling it gives women, the empowerment,” she states. “I love that it’s for women only, then men afterwards.”
And M&S has always been a good fit for Rosie, who considers herself a true Brit although she’s now based in Hollywood with her film star fiancé Jason Statham.

Rosie joined forces with M&S five years ago
“Marks & Spencer is so iconically British,” she says. “Everybody shops there, it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a massive income or not. I bought my first bra from there.”
The glamorous lifestyle she now enjoys is a far cry from Rosie’s early days in Devon, where she was born in 1987 and raised on the family farm. “Where I grew up was very rustic, very rural,” she says. “Just a tiny cottage in the middle of nowhere. It was my parents’ dream to have some animals and have an organic farm, and so that’s how we grew up. Very sheltered.”
Her mother, Fiona, is a fitness instructor while her father, Charles, is a surveyor and she has two younger siblings.
In the past Rosie has revealed she was bullied at school because of her double-barrelled name, full lips and flat chest. It wasn’t all gloom, however, as classmates in Tavistock once voted her “most likely to become a supermodel”.
Rosie also admits: “I was never particularly fashionable. Devon didn’t allow for those opportunities.”
Her first foray into fashion was buying a fake pair of Ugg boots online, and she recalls the first time she wore them. “I walked into a restaurant and literally everyone turned and looked at me and they all laughed,” she says.

It’s certainly Rosie who’s having the last laugh now. She was 15 when she interned at a modelling agency, before sitting her GCSEs, and started full-time work a year later – still wearing braces on her teeth. Her first shoot was for Levi Strauss, in 2003.
Her breakthrough year was 2008, when she was chosen to model Burberry clothes and also got her first British Vogue cover.
Along with Cara Delevingne, Kate Moss and Gandy, she’s currently one of Britain’s top earning models with an estimated fortune of more than £8million.
Celebrity make-up artist Ruby Hammer, who has worked with Rosie many times, describes her as “the quintessential English rose”.
Revealing another string to her bow she’s also appeared in Hollywood films, including Mad Max: Fury Road and 2011’s Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. But according to Forbes most of her earnings come from modelling, and the message from the film critics seems to be: “Don’t give up the day job.”
One reviewer dismissed her as “window dressing” in Transformers while another wrote that she “sucked the life from every scene”. She has been with Statham, who is 20 years her senior, since 2010 and it was confirmed last year they were engaged. He’s also a Brit and known for his roles in films such as Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and The Expendables series. Before meeting Rosie he dated Kelly Brook for seven years, while she’s said to have had a fling with Kylie Minogue’s ex Olivier Martinez.

Jason and Rosie have a baby son, Jack, who was born in June and Rosie announced his birth on social media, declaring: “Our little man has arrived.”
The family home is a luxurious pad in Los Angeles, reportedly worth £8.5million but Rosie is still drawn to Devon. She says: “I’ll get down there and have a few days in the mud and rain and see the animals, go for a few walks. It’s good, it reminds me where I come from, then you go back to the world.
“Deep down I feel much more comfortable in my welly boots with my Mum up a field than I do at some fancy red carpet event in Hollywood.”
Her likeability is another reason why M&S, due to publish its latest results next week, pays her so richly to model its underwear. Recently she’s become more involved in the design side for her Rosie for Autograph collection. “Not only is she beautiful,” says Soozie Jenkinson, M&S head of design for lingerie. “But there is also something very grounded about her that resonates with our customers.”
It’s a description that pleases the model, who takes pride in being professional and remembering her roots. Rosie says: “To be a successful model, you have to be a team player and trouper. Your reputation is everything in the entertainment industry, and everyone talks.
“I love this saying, ‘It takes a lifetime to build a reputation and a single act to destroy it’. You’re lucky if you get an opportunity, and if you do you’ve got to make the best out of it. You’ve got to show up and work hard.”
The catwalk is often associated with diva-like tantrums and demands, so it’s heartening to hear the supermodel who grew up on a farm is still prepared to muck in.
