Boosted has announced a quartet of new electric skateboards, including a refresh of its popular Dual+ longboard and its first-ever shortboard.

The four skateboards are really just two form factors with two variants. There are two new longboards, the Boosted Plus and higher-end Boosted Stealth, and two shortboards, the Boosted Mini S and upgraded Boosted Mini X.

Lewis Hamilton boosted despite qualifying fourth as Sebastian Vettel reveals pole concern https://briefnews.eu/lewis-hamilton-boosted-despite-qualifying-fourth-as-sebastian-vettel-reveals-pole-concern/ https://briefnews.eu/lewis-hamilton-boosted-despite-qualifying-fourth-as-sebastian-vettel-reveals-pole-concern/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 09:06:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lewis-hamilton-boosted-despite-qualifying-fourth-as-sebastian-vettel-reveals-pole-concern/

Hamilton had topped practice during both sessions on Friday but Ferrari found their groove during FP3 on Saturday morning.

And they proved that form again in qualifying, Vettel pipping team-mate Kimi Raikkonen to pole position with both Mercedes relegated to the second row.

But the German pole-sitter revealed afterwards while standing on the home straight that he was worried about the cars on the even side of the grid – which will include Hamilton.

“We’ll find out tomorrow but it looks like on Kimi’s side there is more rubber so I will need a good start,” Vettel said.

It had looked as though Raikkonen would take pole after breaking the lap record for the Shanghai circuit.

The Finn, just as he had a week ago in Bahrain, was sitting pretty with the Ferraris half a second clear of Mercedes and Vettel his only realistic rival.

But the four-time world champion pulled more time out of the lap to take top spot by just eight thousandths of a second.

“I was happy with the whole lap, not just the last sector, but the car was really amazing,” Vettel added.

“It just kept getting better. I knew that the first lap I had some mistakes and lost the rear in the exit of Turn Three and then in Turn Six again so I was a bit beaten up.

“But I knew that if I got a tidy lap I had a little bit of margin and I could push.”

And while the battle between Ferrari team-mates Raikkonen and Vettel is an intriguing one, F1 fans were also treated to a performance that saw reigning Constructors’ champions Mercedes held under the cosh.

“This is the turning point,” former F1 world champion Damon Hill told Sky Sports.

“For so long we have seen Mercedes dominate. They’ve had the party mode in qualifying but now both Ferrari cars are ahead of Mercedes.

“Hamilton looked a little out of sorts, good performance from Valtteri.

“I thought Kimi had it in the bag. That was such a perfect lap that I didn’t think anybody could do better than that. But Sebastian Vettel showed his class.”

MoviePass Reveals Which Movies They’ve Boosted Ticket Sales for the Most https://briefnews.eu/moviepass-reveals-which-movies-theyve-boosted-ticket-sales-for-the-most/ https://briefnews.eu/moviepass-reveals-which-movies-theyve-boosted-ticket-sales-for-the-most/#respond Tue, 27 Mar 2018 06:57:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/moviepass-reveals-which-movies-theyve-boosted-ticket-sales-for-the-most/ MoviePass Ticket Numbers

MoviePass is certainly shaking things up when it comes to the theatrical box office. It remains to be seen what the long term impact will be for theater chains and studios (or whether MoviePass can sustain itself), but for now, MoviePass is growing and showing no signs of slowing down. The service has passed 2 million subscribers, and they’re only going to get more with their recent price drop for an annual subscription.

With that large of a consumer base, MoviePass hasn’t been shy about touting their influence on the movie-going public. In fact, they’ve just provided some general numbers for which movies they’ve sold the most tickets for since their revamp last year. It should come as no surprise that Black Panther comes out on top with over 1 million tickets sold through MoviePass, but it appears the service has helped plenty of other movies sell tens of thousands of tickets.

MoviePass recently provided data to Business Insider laying out the 27 movies that have been the most successful with their users. Here’s how they’re broken down:

Over 200,000 tickets sold:

  • Pitch Perfect 3
  • Peter Rabbit
  • Molly’s Game
  • 12 Strong
  • Tomb Raider
  • The 15:17 to Paris
  • A Wrinkle in Time
  • Darkest Hour
  • Death Wish
  • The Commuter
  • Maze Runner: The Death Cure
  • Lady Bird
  • Murder on the Orient Express
  • I, Tonya

More than 300,000 tickets sold:

  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • Justice League
  • Red Sparrow
  • Coco

More than 400,000 tickets sold:

  • Annihilation
  • The Post
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • The Shape of Water

More than 500,000 tickets sold:

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • Game Night
  • The Greatest Showman

More than 750,000 tickets sold:

  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

More than 1 million tickets sold:

  • Black Panther

Seeing the numbers for movies like The Greatest Showman and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle help explain how those movies remained so successful at the box office for an extended period of time. Though we obviously can’t place all the success on MoviePass, surely plenty more moviegoers went to see these movies because it wasn’t going to cost them a dime.

If we take the average ticket price of going to a movie in 2017 at $ 8.97, then the lower tier of movies that sold over 200,000 tickets earned at least $ 1.79 million from MoviePass tickets. And the numbers only get higher from there.

The question is how many of these MoviePass subscribers wouldn’t have gone to see these movies if they didn’t have a MoviePass subscription. Surely the company is doing customer surveys that ask people this very question in order to tout the effect they’re having on box office. Plus, let’s not forget that the company occasionally blacks out certain movies in certain markets, likely using it as a point of comparison for how movies do in areas with MoviePass compared to places where subscribers couldn’t use it.

We’ll be waiting while before we see if MoviePass has the traction to stick around longer than a few years. Beyond the cost to maintain the service, they’ve stumbled with customer service (though they’re making attempts at improving it), and they’ve made missteps with their reportedly inactive tracking software within the MoviePass app that has since been removed. Right now it seems the biggest enemy MoviePass has might be itself, so hopefully they don’t get in their own way.

Pound to euro exchange rate: GBP boosted by better than expected UK wage data https://briefnews.eu/pound-to-euro-exchange-rate-gbp-boosted-by-better-than-expected-uk-wage-data/ https://briefnews.eu/pound-to-euro-exchange-rate-gbp-boosted-by-better-than-expected-uk-wage-data/#respond Thu, 22 Mar 2018 08:28:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pound-to-euro-exchange-rate-gbp-boosted-by-better-than-expected-uk-wage-data/

The pound is fairing well again against the euro today after the UK received better than expected wage data.

The latest Bloomberg figures report the GBP/EUR exchange rate to be 1.1455 this compares to yesterday’s figures of 1.1421.

Alongside the lowest levels of debt recorded since the 2008 financial crisis, the pound started to secure its gain last week despite tensions between UK and EU leaders over recent months.

Today’s good news comes as a direct response from the promising UK wage data which, TorFX currency analyst Laura Parsons, explained pushed the GBP/EUR exchange rate higher still.

Across the board, British worker’s wages have risen at the fastest pace in two years, which comes as a promising sign of a stronger future for the pound.

The sterling was hit hard in 2017 following the vote to leave the European Union which negatively impacted consumer spending.

The surprising wage results, however, which were far higher than what was forecast by economists, have set the pound in good stead for the remainder of the week.

Laura went on to add: “Growth in average earnings including bonuses increased 2.8 per cent rather than the 2.6 per cent forecast, giving Sterling a boost ahead of the Bank of England’s (BoE) interest rate decision.”

At 12 pm today, the Bank of England is expected to release its latest interest rates, a decision that Laura revealed could shoot the sterling higher still.

“If the central bank adopts a hawkish attitude tomorrow and hints at a rate hike in May, the pound might just find the energy to climb above €1.150 against the euro,” Laura explained.

If, as economists expect, the central bank hikes rates, this could be the boost the sterling needs to rise up against the euro..

“That being said, Sterling’s gains might be limited by concerns surrounding outcome of the EU Brexit summit,” added Laura.

In an announcement on Monday, news that a UK-EU Brexit treaty draft had many leaders in agreement over major concerns rallied the pound.

The deal discussed states that Britain will be free of EU rules starting from the end of December 2020 with the Government free to sign a new trade deal next year.

Conservative MP, David David released a positive statement to say: “The deal we have struck should give us confidence that a good deal for the United Kingdom and the European Union is closer than ever before.”

Investors are being urged to keep a close eye on the BoE’s interest announcements, the higher rate could mean a better exchange rate for Britons.

Dimon now earns around 240 times the average pay of JPMorgan’s 250,000 employees, TheStreet reports. The CEO’s earnings are comprised of a $ 1.5 million salary and $ 28 million in “performance shares” linked to profitability. Dimon was rewarded for “strong performance in 2017 and through the cycle.” The average pay of the bank’s employees was not increased.

The bank’s net income fell one percent to $ 24.4 billion, while revenue climbed four percent last year.

Last week, Dimon announced that the company expects to save $ 3.5 billion from the new tax law, and may share the proceeds with employees. “We think it’s time that all of America share broadly, and we’re going to have things that we think are good for some employees,” Dimon said.

“That’s what we’re supposed to do. We’re a bank. We’re supposed to help support and grow communities. And it will enhance our growth in the future, too.”

Jamie Dimon hit the headlines in various media last year when he said that bitcoin is good only for drug dealers and murderers. Last week, he said he “regrets” disparaging bitcoin.

Lowe’s beats across the board, boosted by lower costs and strong demand for emergency supplies (LOW) https://briefnews.eu/lowes-beats-across-the-board-boosted-by-lower-costs-and-strong-demand-for-emergency-supplies-low/ https://briefnews.eu/lowes-beats-across-the-board-boosted-by-lower-costs-and-strong-demand-for-emergency-supplies-low/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 12:26:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lowes-beats-across-the-board-boosted-by-lower-costs-and-strong-demand-for-emergency-supplies-low/ Lowe'sReuters/Mohammad Khursheed

  • The home-improvement chain beat on both the top and bottom lines, boosted by lower costs and strong demand for emergency supplies due to the hurricanes.
  • Same-store sales rose 5.7% versus a year ago, beating the Wall Street estimate of 4.6% growth.

(Reuters) – Lowe’s Cos Inc reported higher-than-expected comp sales and profit on Tuesday, helped by lower costs as well as higher demand for emergency supplies and rebuilding material due to hurricanes battering several regions in the United States.

Sales at stores open at least a year increased 5.7 percent, above the average analyst estimate of 4.6 percent growth, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company said hurricane-related sales in the quarter were about $ 200 million.

The retailer also said Chief Operating Officer Rick Damron would retire and would be replaced by the president of Lowe’s international business, Richard Maltsbarger, effective Feb. 3.

Larger rival Home Depot Inc raised its full-year forecasts last week after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma spurred demand for emergency supplies and rebuilding materials even as the retailer benefits from a multi-year recovery in the housing market.

Promotions to woo professional contractors, a clientele with deeper pockets than Lowe’s traditional client base of do-it-yourself customers also helped the retailer post comparable sales above the company average in the third quarter, Lowe’s Chief Executive Robert Niblock said.

Selling and general expenses fell about 7 percent to $ 3.81 billion in the quarter ended Nov. 3.

Net income rose to $ 872 million, or $ 1.05 per share, in the quarter, from $ 379 million, or 43 cents per share, a year earlier. The year-ago quarter had included $ 462 million of non-cash pre-tax charges.

Net sales rose 6.6 percent to $ 16.77 billion.

Analysts on average had expected earnings of $ 1.02 per share on revenue of $ 16.59 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

House prices in UK boosted by adding value to homes – but should you BORROW money for this https://briefnews.eu/house-prices-in-uk-boosted-by-adding-value-to-homes-but-should-you-borrow-money-for-this/ https://briefnews.eu/house-prices-in-uk-boosted-by-adding-value-to-homes-but-should-you-borrow-money-for-this/#respond Fri, 10 Nov 2017 00:26:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/house-prices-in-uk-boosted-by-adding-value-to-homes-but-should-you-borrow-money-for-this/

It’s a situation many will be familiar with; ‘Shrinking House Syndrome’.  The effect a growing family has on what was previously a property that was a perfect size.

Whether it’s a lack of storage, bedrooms or bathrooms, there is often a tipping point which results in the decision that more space is required, and that there is a need to move home.

In an ideal scenario it would be easy – and affordable – to sell one house and buy another, especially with a house price boom in the north of England.

However, in the last year or so, it’s become exceptionally difficult.  Political and economic uncertainty, coupled with rising house prices has meant that fewer people are moving, therefore there are fewer properties on the market for sale. Which means less choice for would-be buyers in many parts of the country.

It’s a cyclical problem too, because the lack of properties for sale in many areas then in turn puts people who need to move off of putting their own home on the market, for fear that they will sell it yet not be able to find anything to buy. And it’s this pattern which, long term, causes markets to stagnate.

In fact, recent research carried out by comparison website CompareTheMarket.com suggests that almost one in three (29%) homeowners are now delaying plans to move due to economic uncertainty and house prices, with the average homeowner committed to staying in their current property for at least the next eight years.

So, what’s the answer? Well, in the last twelve months remortgaging has become more and more popular. In part, due to the exceptionally cheap fixed rate deals which have been available.

But there has been an increase of people raising capital when they remortgage, with many seeing extending their current home as a viable alternative to moving.

Which makes sense when you think about it.  Because if you can’t find somewhere to move to, then creating more space in your current property solves the problem and can, if you’re canny, increase the value of the property to boot.

So, which improvements really do add value, as well as having a practical benefit?

First on the list are bathrooms.  As anyone with a family but only one bathroom will tell you, it can be the cause of much angst.

But by stealing space from perhaps a larger bedroom, or converting an unused box room into a bathroom, or perhaps even cleverly using the space under the stairs, not only can you cut the queue in the mornings, but you can also add significant value to your home.

Research from insurers Direct Line suggests that an additional bathroom in a three-bedroom property would add on average 6.8% to its value, whilst an additional bathroom in a four-bedroom home would add 6.2% to its value.

With the average house price in the UK currently £225,826 according to the latest Halifax figures released this week, that could mean adding anything between £14,000 to £15,300 in value.  Plus of course the priceless feeling of being able to have a bath in peace.

Rebecca Clapham, head of household products at Direct Line, said: “A new bathroom can add thousands to the value of a home compared to the cost of fitting one, and may be a good option for people wishing to improve their home but without the space to add an extra bedroom or improve their kitchen.”

However, Rebecca added: “If you’re having an extra bathroom, en-suite shower room or cloakroom fitted, make sure you use a qualified plumber. It can be tempting to try and do things yourself to save money but if you get it wrong, a dodgy plumbing job could end up costing much more if pipes burst and cause damage to your home.”

The good news if you don’t have loads of space to play around with is that most estate agents suggest that additional shower room or en-suite is as desirable as an additional family bathroom, meaning that the amount of value it can add is approximately the same.

Bedrooms can be another bête noir, particularly when children outgrow sharing with a sibling. There are various options for adding further bedrooms to properties, depending of course on the building you start with and the size of your budget.

Loft extensions can be a smart way to use existing space, and depending on the amount of work required to add stairs for access and necessary windows, are potentially a more cost-effective option than, for example, a double height extension.

As a project, they can also be quicker with less disruption, again a key factor for those who are living in the property whilst works are being carried out.

Paul Grinsell, Executive Director of the British Home Enhancement Trade Association, the main association for all manufacturers and suppliers of home improvement products said: “The general industry consensus is that additional bedrooms can increase a property’s value by as much as 10%, depending of course on the area.

“Obviously though, it’s best to get professional planning advice in terms of what might work best and what you’re able to do within Permitted Development Rights, before you start your project.”

Another trend seen in recent years is to convert a garage into an additional ground floor bedroom, which can be ideal for those that have an elderly relative living with them who finds stairs a challenge.

However, a note of caution on converting garages to bedrooms; aside from considering how the layout will work in a practical sense, a ground floor bedroom can be a difficult sell when you come to move, as many buyers perceive that you ‘go upstairs to bed’ and that a room downstairs isn’t a ‘bedroom’.

As Brian Murphy, Head of Lending for Mortgage Advice Bureau, who’ve released their best remortgage deals today said: “The additional value created by converting a garage to a bedroom can, in some circumstances, be less than if you had added a bedroom upstairs.

“You would also need to be conscious that, should you remortgage or sell again at any point in the future, a Surveyor assessing the property for mortgage purposes may not see a garage conversion as an additional bedroom, which may impact its formal valuation.”

Of course, as with any major project, it’s wise to expect some upheaval and think about timings in terms of when best it may suit you to embark on such an undertaking.

But if by extending your current abode it makes it viable to spend another few years in your property as well as adding value, rather than deal with the stress and uncertainty of selling and trying to find what you’re looking for at a time when stock levels are all time lows, it may well be worth considering.

Fiat Chrysler's Q3 profit boosted by strong North American earnings https://briefnews.eu/fiat-chryslers-q3-profit-boosted-by-strong-north-american-earnings/ https://briefnews.eu/fiat-chryslers-q3-profit-boosted-by-strong-north-american-earnings/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2017 13:40:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fiat-chryslers-q3-profit-boosted-by-strong-north-american-earnings/

MILAN, Italy — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) reported a 17 percent jump in third-quarter adjusted operating profit on Tuesday, helped by a strong performance in its key North American market and improving operations in Europe and Latin America.

The world’s seventh-largest carmaker still makes the lion’s share of its profits in North America, so improving, or at least maintaining, its margins there is a key focus.

The carmaker reported an 8 percent adjusted operating profit margin in the region, up from 7.6 percent a year ago, despite a drop in sales and shipments.

“FCA’s profitability in North America remained strong in the quarter despite a weakening market there,” a Milan-based analyst said.

FCA’s profitability compares with an 8.3 percent North America margin reached in the quarter by bigger U.S. rival GM , showing CEO Sergio Marchionne making progress towards his goal of closing the margin gap with GM and the company’s other U.S. rival, Ford, by 2018.

The company’s confirmation of its full-year outlook also pushed shares higher, a trader added.

The stock was up 2.8 percent by 1129 GMT, outperforming a 1 percent rise in the European auto index.

FCA has been retooling some U.S. factories to boost output of sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) and trucks while ending production of some unprofitable sedans to strengthen profitability as the U.S. car market comes off its peak.

The company said a drop in North America shipments due to lower fleet sales and discontinued models was partially offset by higher deliveries of Ram trucks and two models from the Alfa Romeo stable: the Stelvio sport utility vehicle and Giulia sedan.

Profitability also improved in Europe, helped by sales of the Stelvio and the new Jeep Compass, and Latin America, while margins at Maserati remained strong at 13.8 percent due to strong demand for its first SUV, the Levante.

In a later conference call, investors are looking for hints on the new strategy to 2022 which the company promised to unveil early next year.

Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said earlier this year that FCA would streamline its portfolio and that components businesses, including Magneti Marelli, would be separated from the group, possibly via a spin-off.

While FCA confirmed its targets this year, doubts remain about its exposure to a weakening U.S. market, recall costs and potential fines over emissions after it was targeted by European and U.S. authorities over alleged breaches.

Pound to euro exchange rate: Sterling boosted ahead of Eurozone update https://briefnews.eu/pound-to-euro-exchange-rate-sterling-boosted-ahead-of-eurozone-update/ https://briefnews.eu/pound-to-euro-exchange-rate-sterling-boosted-ahead-of-eurozone-update/#respond Thu, 21 Sep 2017 07:39:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pound-to-euro-exchange-rate-sterling-boosted-ahead-of-eurozone-update/

The exchange rate has climbed to €1.136, up from €.127 yesterday.

Sterling was boosted yesterday by retail sales data released out of the UK.

According to data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), retail sales growth in the UK surged from 0.6 per cent to one per cent in August, reaching its highest levels since April and beating expectations it would slide to 0.2 per cent.

A strong uptick in clothing sales in particular appeared to drive the rise in sales last month, with increased demand for non-essential items helping to offset subdued food and fuel sales.

The ONS said in its report: “Year-on-year contribution of food stores remains flat, while there was a fall in the contribution of growth within petrol stations, showing that contributions to the overall growth came from non-essential items.”

It wasn’t the only factor to boost the exchange rate. The euro was weakened ahead of an announcement from the Federal Reserve.

TorFX currency analyst Rewan Tremethick said: “Data showing strong growth for UK retail sales in August proved a nice surprise for markets yesterday.

“Sales grew one per cent on the month, against predictions of a 0.2 per cent expansion.

“This pushed GBP/EUR up 0.3 per cent to €1.130, with the euro also weakened by market anticipation of the Federal Reserve announcements in the evening.”

Fresh data out of the UK today could stand to further influence the exchange rate.

An update from the Eurozone is also on the agenda.

Mr Tremethick said: “UK government borrowing figures and a speech from European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi this afternoon will ensure that GBP/EUR doesn’t get much of a rest ahead of Theresa May’s Brexit speech on Friday.”
