Sen. Ted Cruz was met with boos from a Texas audience when he said that his plan to combat school shootings is placing more police officers in schools.
Cruz spoke about guns and other contentious topics at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Saturday, where he was met with a responsive audience.
"Whenever you have a mass murder … you have Democrats in Washington, the step they immediately go to is we need to take away firearms from law-abiding citizens," Cruz said, prompting sparse applause. "OK, you can clap for that except for the minor problem that it doesn't work. If the objective is to stop these crimes, gun control is singularly ineffective."
Cruz argued that gun control measures punish "law-abiding citizens" instead of criminals, though the audience seemed to disagree with him at some points.
"If you want to stop crime," Cruz said, "you target the bad guys. You target the criminals, the felons, the fugitives. You prosecute them, you put them in jail, you get them off the streets, and you also enhance security at vulnerable targets."
Cruz has made similar comments before in defense of the National Rifle Association, which he said "stands up for the rights of every American," Business Insider previously reported. Cruz has received the most donations from gun rights groups among other Texas lawmakers, according to Axios.
"Two weeks ago, I stood on the Senate floor and tried to pass legislation I've introduced that would double the number of police officers in school," Cruz said to a crowd of boos. "If we want to keep our kids safe, and I desperately want to keep our kids safe, the most effective step we can do is to have police officers there to protect them who can intercept a mass murderer before he gets into the school and stop them."
—Texas Tribune (@TexasTribune) September 24, 2022
Cruz was met with more yells from the audience, this time specifically about the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in May that left 19 elementary schoolers and two teachers dead. A total of 376 law enforcement officers responded to the shooting, though the gunman remained at large for over an hour. An interim report on the police response found that responding officers "failed to prioritize saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety," Insider previously reported.
Cruz said that the Uvalde shooter was successful in his efforts because he was able to get into the school through an unlocked door, but members of the audience continued to yell back at him.
"Look, if you have a solution to stop the deranged evil murderers, I'd love to hear it. My solution is to throw them in jail," Cruz said. "Stop them before they commit these crimes. There are some we won't know about beforehand, and the single best step to stop them is to have armed officers on campus that can stop them before they kill our kids."
"But look, instead you guys can instead sing kumbaya with them and hope they'll just stop, but what you're proposing doesn't work," Cruz added.
"Eighteen-year-old boys don't need an AR-15," someone from the audience yelled, prompting applause.

Andrew Sullivan, a self-styled conservative writer who backed Barack Obama and same-sex-marriage, ran afoul of the social justice crowd for criticizing New York Times’ hiring of an Asian-American reporter who wrote racist tweets.
Sullivan’s article, published in the New York Magazine on Friday under the headline “When Racism Is Fit to Print,” points out that conservatives consider Sarah Jeong’s tweets racist, while the political left considers that “simply impossible… by virtue of being an Asian woman.”
Making it clear that he doesn’t want Jeong fired, Sullivan then says “we all live on campus now,” a society in which “we are all mere appendages of various groups of oppressors and oppressed, and in which the oppressed definitionally cannot be at fault.”
‘How dare he!’ thundered the representatives of what Sullivan called the “liberal media,” denouncing his column as “complete garbage,” his worldview “stupendously dishonest” and his entire opus “a long jam of reactionary bad columns.”
andrew sullivan’s newest column is complete garbage and i’m embarrassed to be even tangentially associated with it
— brian feldman (@bafeldman) August 3, 2018
Yes Andrew Sullivan’s worldview is stupendously dishonest, and his oeuvre is a long jam of reactionary bad columns. But one would think that with so much practice…he would be better at them?
— de bleck penta (@fivefifths) August 3, 2018
Others accused Sullivan of being “an ardent white supremacist & scientific racist,” an “undisguised white supremacist,” and “an incurious dull-minded mediocrity and an extremely sh*tty and slovenly writer.”
I wonder if anyone at NY Magazine knows how demoralizing it is to young writers to see Andrew Sullivan, an ardent white supremacist & scientific racist, attain the lifelong perch Sarah Jeong would be denied for 100% inoffensive tweets
— Dan O'Sullivan (@Bro_Pair) August 3, 2018
one of the things about andrew sullivan is that on top of being an undisguised white supremacist he's also just an incurious dull-minded mediocrity and an extremely shitty and slovenly writer
— Albert Burneko (@AlbertBurneko) August 3, 2018
One journalist brought up Sullivan’s sexuality, saying that the legalization of same-sex marriage “freed up gay dudes to be doctrinaire right-wingers again.”
one funny consequence of the resolution of the gay marriage question, which shaped so much of andrew sullivan's life in writing, is that it freed up gay dudes to be doctrinaire right-wingers again
— chris hooks (@cd_hooks) August 3, 2018
Then there were those who argued that reverse racism cannot exist, and that, as one former Hillary Clinton organizer put it in all caps, “YOU CANNOT BE RACIST AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE” – pretty much exactly what Sullivan described in his article as the political left’s position.
Andrew Sullivan’s piece is problematic in many ways.
But the main point of foolishness is
YOU CANNOT BE RACIST AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE.
You can only be prejudice against a dominant race.
Racism is about in-group vs. out-group power. In the American context whites are in-group.
— Kaivan Shroff (@KaivanShroff) August 3, 2018
That Andrew Sullivan piece is stupid because reverse racism doesn’t exist, but it’s also stupid because he managed to slip in the “socialism only works in all white countries” anti-diversity argument. pic.twitter.com/9c3oEY50yo
— Jack Smith IV (@JackSmithIV) August 3, 2018
One journalist even suggested, presumably in jest, a GoFundMe so Sullivan will stop writing.
A GoFundMe so Andrew Sullivan will stop writing.
— Yashar Ali 🐘 (@yashar) August 3, 2018
A few voices rose up in Sullivan’s defense, however.
1. White supremacy is real, evil, and must be fought.
2. Anti-white racism ALSO exists; historical white privilege does not change the meaning of "racism."
3. In order to credibly call out 1, one must also consistently denounce 2 when one sees it.

I loathe Andrew Sullivan (never forget that he claimed, continuously, Sarah Palin faked a pregnancy, well after the math made that totally impossible), but he's getting so much irrational hatred over his column today that I may be forced to take him somewhat seriously again.
— John Ziegler (@Zigmanfreud) August 3, 2018
The British-born Sullivan worked for the liberal New Republic in the 1990s but rose to prominence in the 2000s as a self-described conservative blogger who backed the Iraq War, same-sex marriage, progressive taxation, ending capital punishment, Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy and Obamacare.

Former mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani was booed raucously by the baseball fans as he celebrated his birthday at the Yankees Stadium.
The 74-year-old decided to mark the occasion by donning his Yankees cap and returning to the Bronx for the Yankees’ Memorial Day game against the Houston Astros on Monday.
During the announcement section a happy birthday message from the New York Yankees to Giuliani was read over the loudspeaker, prompting the stadium to erupt in a loud jeer.
Boisterous boos can be heard as the shout out is made and displayed on the video board.
At Yankee stadium: “The Yankees wish a happy birthday to former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.”
Thunderous boos rained across the stadium.

Social media users noted how the tide has changed for Giuliani, a politician who was once held in great respect by New Yorkers, particularly in the aftermath of 9/11.
It’s amazing that Rudy Giuliani went from being praised in New York City constantly to getting booed at Yankee Stadium…

Mack Beggs won the girls’ Class 6A 110lb division for the second year in a row at the weekend, prompting a crescendo of boos from the watching crowd, a reaction to Beggs’ controversial situation stemming from the 18-year-old’s ongoing transition from female to male.
Beggs, who is currently taking a low dose of testosterone, has previously asked the school to wrestle against boys but Texas public high schools rules dictate that wrestlers compete under the gender on their birth certificate.
A video posted on social media showed cheers among the boos after Beggs was announced victorious over the same opponent the wrestler beat in the 2017 final. Last year’s win was clouded by an eleventh-hour lawsuit that attempted to stop Beggs from competing altogether.
Beggs entered this year’s championships with a perfect 32-0 record and beat three wrestlers on the way to winning the championship, with one forfeit from a wrestler who feared injury. Last season, Beggs had two forfeits from wrestlers who harbored the same reservations.
However, the junior athlete’s mother, Angela McNaw, says it was skill rather than strength which played the biggest part in the two title victories.
“He has so much respect for all the girls he wrestles,” said McNew, AP reported. “People think Mack has been beating up on girls… The girls he wrestles with, they are tough. It has more to do with skill and discipline than strength.”
Beggs told local newspaper Dallas Metro: “That (the criticism) didn’t stop me from competing. That didn’t stop me from being who I was. It sure as hell didn’t stop me from doing what I wanted to do in the past, and it won’t stop me from what I want to do in the future.”
The reaction to Beggs’ win has polarized opinion on social media almost as much as the issue of the wrestler’s participation amongst girls. Some defended Beggs, while others questioned the fairness of allowing an athlete to wrestle while undergoing hormone treatment.

Last night the 26-year-old’s hit Shape Of You won Best Pop Solo Performance.
The news was a surprise to some as his competitors were stars Lady Gaga, Kesha, Kelly Clarkson and Pink.
However, Sheeran failed to show up to win the award, which allegedly resulted in boos from the audience when his name was read out.
People reported: “There were sounds of disappointment with slight boos from the audience when Ed Sheeran won for pop vocal performance over Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Lady Gaga and Kesha.”
Not only that, but some music fans and journalists expressed their outrage on social media.
One tweeted: “Naturally, Ed Sheeran wins with a Sia/TLC rip-off over four deserving women who all sang their faces off. #Grammys.”
Another said: “Kesha really did go through hell and back to release Praying and get nominated for a Grammy, only to lose to an Ed Sheeran song about how he likes a woman’s body over a Sia sample #GRAMMYs.”
While one added: “Still confused as to how @edsheeran won best pop song over @KeshaRose. She literally made a song about overcoming sexual abuse. #GRAMMYs.”
Meanwhile Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher won a posthumous Grammy.
The Princess Leia star won the Best Spoken Word Album Grammy for her autobiographical book, The Princess Diarist.
Based on her diary entries from the 1970s when she was filming the first Star Wars movie, the book was her last book before she died.

Fans were waiting outside in the rain as Trump, dealing with longer wait times due to some of the stadium’s entrances being closed to accomodate Trump. As the presidential motorcade rolled past the awaiting fans, many of those hoping to making into the stadium before opening kickoff booed.
CNN’s Andy Scholes captured the moment, which you can watch below.
Even after more entrances were opened up once Trump was in the building, there were long lines of Georgia and Alabama fans waiting outside the venue as the game inched closer and closer to opening kickoff. Inside, the empty seats were apparent.

Two days before German federal elections, Angela Merkel, who is going for a fourth term as Chancellor, found her closing campaign rally in Munich crashed by right-wing protesters, who booed and heckled her for half an hour as she made her speech.
The loud heckling and whistling was audible on RT Ruptly’s live feed from the Friday rally even before Merkel began to speak, and the organizers eventually had to raise the mic’s volume. This did not prevent the German leader from giving her prepared 30-minute speech, but she added an improvised detail as an opening remark to her opponents.
“With whistling and yelling, one will surely not shape Germany’s future,” Merkel told the protesters on the last day election campaigning is allowed to take place.
This is not the first time Merkel has been disrupted by demonstrators on the campaign trail. At a rally in Heidelberg earlier in September, the Chancellor was grazed by a thrown tomato, which left a faint, but visible, stain on her red jacket. Though in a usual show of stoicism, Merkel did not lose her cool.
Merkel and her ruling conservative CDU/CSU alliance have taken a hit over the last few years, partly as a result of her handling of the migrant and refugee crisis, the biggest to face Europe since the Second World War. On Friday, the results of a YouGov survey was published in the newspaper Die Welt, showing that half of the German electorate (out of a sample of 2,308 respondents) agreed with the slogan “Merkel must go!” chanted by right-wing demonstrators at her rallies. The highest percentage came from supporters of the far-right AfD (Alternative for Germany) party, but large numbers of the Left party and center-left SPD voters shared those sentiments as well.
Merkel’s main rival is Martin Schulz of the SPD (Social Democratic Party), who on Friday also held a rally in Berlin where he discussed reforms, increased spending on schools and addressing gender disparities, which he accused Merkel of ignoring. By contrast Schulz was not met with any booing, but there are fears his SPD party is undermined by years of coalition with the CDU/CSU since the elections of 2013.
“Martin Schulz is also not tackling those issues,” a young man who attended the rally told RT. “His party has been in the government for the past few years, so he’s not a candidate for true change.”
The CDU/CSU is still in the lead at the polls, with support for them showing at 37 percent. The SPD is trailing behind at 22 percent, while the anti-immigration AfD holds 10 percent. The FDP and the Left party, which calls for higher taxes on the rich and the dissolution of NATO, hold 9 percent each.
“It’s important to have a left [wing] agenda in their [the government’s] programs so the country is able to make a step to the left in the future and avoid more steps into the right, which we are doing at the moment, I’m afraid,” said another man at a Left campaign rally.

Although good reviews have also emerged online, there has been plenty of negative response to the highly-anticipated movie on social media.
One audience member said: “#mothermovie is such a mess I am actually feeling sorry for myself right now. #Venezia74.”
Another tweeted: “#mothermovie gets booed at its #venezia74 press premiere. And deservedly so: a self referential, near ridiculous trip. Big disappointment.”
“Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! is a horrific film with nothing but horrific characters. Exclamation point #Venezia74 #mother!” read an additional post.
Variety’s review was also critical, saying: “It’s more like a dazzlingly skillful machine of virtual reality designed to get nothing but a rise out of you. It’s a baroque nightmare that’s about nothing but itself.”
However, there’s also been plenty of praise.
One person said: “Darren Aronofsky’s mother! is a twisted, often inspired, often insane fever dream of a film. #Venezia74.”
“Mother! takes on all of humanity’s insanity at once, wraps it in a grand metaphor and shoots it in your face unapologetically #venezia74,” hailed another.
The film’s trailers – which have given little away in terms of plot – have certainly left audiences rattled.
Javier Bardem and Michelle Pfeiffer also star.
Mother! is out on September 15.

LEWIS Hamilton was jeered on the podium by local fans after his Italian GP victory as he moved three points clear of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in the title race.
Hamilton, who previously said he was out to spoil the Scuderia’s 70th anniversary celebrations at their home race, was in sublime form as he led a Mercedes one-two and finished more than 30 seconds ahead of Vettel in third.
But while the ever-loud Monza faithful wildly cheered Vettel’s podium entrance, Hamilton was met with a smattering of boos after his fourth Italian GP victory.
And those jeers got ever louder after Hamilton gave his right of reply: “Mercedes power is definitely better than Ferrari power.”
The Englishman said that he respected the passion of the Ferrari-mad crowd. “I love it here in Italy and I love the passion of the fans. They’re fantastic,” he told Sky commentator Martin Brundle.
“This energy is like no where else we really get to see, apart from maybe Silverstone. So I respect it, I appreciate it.”
Previous championship leader Vettel, meanwhile, pounded his chest as he praised the home support, delivering a heartfelt message in Italian.
“You are the best fans in the world,” Vettel said. “Even if this race has been hard, we’re getting there. Forza Ferrari.”
The four-time world champion then added to Sky F1. “The podium made up for everything this weekend.”
HAMILTON: FERRARI NOT DEAD

Hamilton believes his back-to-back wins at Spa and Monza show Mercedes are going from “strength to strength” in their title battle with Ferrari — but insists their rivals are not beaten yet.
For the first time since September 2016, Hamilton holds the lead of the Drivers’ Championship after he led a dominant Mercedes one-two on Ferrari’s home track of Monza.
After struggling in wet qualifying, Vettel recovered to third place as early as lap eight but continuously slipped further behind the two Mercedes and finished a gaping 36 seconds behind at the flag.
Mercedes have now won four of the last five races either side of the summer break but Hamilton, although delighted with the reigning champions’ form, is not getting away heading to a Singapore race in two weeks where Ferrari’s car is to hold an advantage.
“The last two races have been incredibly strong. We’ve just gone from strength to strength,” said Hamilton. “The car felt fantastic.
“It’s still close and a long way to go. Ferrari should be quick at the next circuit with the extra downforce they can put on their car so the fight continues.
“Ferrari might be a little bit quicker when we get to the tracks where you can add downforce. It will continue to be really close.”
MERCEDES BOSS: FERRARI ON THE DECLINE

But Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believes Ferrari has made a step backwards with their car after their thrashing in the Italian GP.
Vettel was beaten by almost 40 seconds — a result which Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne described as “embarrassing”.
But the size of Ferrari’s defeat could have been even more savage but for Mercedes instructing their drivers to “tune down” their engines once victory was assured for new title leader Hamilton ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas.
“It looks like Ferrari have made a step back somehow,” said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. “We were very solid but also they haven’t performed how everyone expected. Red Bull starting from the back of the grid and almost finishing P3? Something is out of sync, something is not how it should be.”
Contrary to expectations, Ferrari declined to introduce a new ‘Monza-spec’ engine this weekend, although the team subsequently claimed the decision was unrelated to the FIA’s crackdown on oil burning.
“We thought they would be closer,” added Wolff.
With seven races remaining, Mercedes lead the title race by 62 points while Hamilton has taken the lead in the drivers’ standings for the first time this season.
Singapore, F1’s next port of call, is expected to favour both Red Bull and Ferrari over Mercedes but Wolff is hopeful his team can buck the trend of a 2017 campaign in which the Silver Arrows have noticeably struggled at low-speed circuits.
“We are progressing with the car. Our car was very strong through the corners, and every type of corner, so that is very encouraging,” said Wolff.
“The slow, twisty circuits have rather suited Red Bull and Ferrari and lots of high-speed downforce was good for our car. But I don’t think that is a pattern which can’t be broken. Nevertheless, I expect it to be a more difficult weekend.”
