Enlarge / Bombing of a factory at Marienburg, Germany, on October 9, 1943. (credit: US Air Force/Public domain)
The Earth’s electrified upper atmosphere (the ionosphere) experiences a lot of natural variation, changing with the days and from season to season. The ionosphere can also be affected by certain big events, including solar flares, volcanic eruptions, lightning—and the massive bombs dropped on Germany during World War II. Those bombings produced shockwaves strong enough to weaken the ionosphere right near the edge of space.
That’s the conclusion of a new study by University of Reading researchers, just published in the journal Annales Geophysicae. More than a historic curiosity, the finding matters because ionospheric disturbances can disrupt key communications technology, including GPS systems, radio telescopes, and radio communications.
The air raids conducted by both the Germans and Allied forces in the 1940s were designed to take out critical industrial and political infrastructure—and if civilians happened to be in the line of fire, so be it. (The Allied bombing of Hamburg in 1943 reportedly left 45,000 dead.) Intensifying the fear of dying among residents was as key to the strategy as the physical destruction wrought by the massive bombs dropped. The largest bombs, weighing as much as 10 tons, were powerful enough to blow the roofs off buildings, sending intense shockwaves not just through the streets but into the skies above.

Indonesia has been hit by suicide bombings across three churches in the region.
Bombers hit Surabaya, the country’s second largest city in the deadliest violence in Indonesia for 13 years.
The attacks come just one day after safety fears over the volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi as tourists were swept up in the problem.
So is Indonesia safe for tourists? Latest travel advice and updates explained.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has updated the travel advice following the attack.
They warns: “On 13 May 2018 there were explosions at three churches in Surabaya in East Java causing a number of deaths and casualties.

The buses packed with civilians that are leaving Syria’s besieged enclave in their hundreds have been increasingly targeted by terrorists, who seek to blend in with the crowds to sneak explosives on board. The Russian military received tip-offs about the terrorist plots every day, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said during a meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on Thursday.
“Four days ago, we received a tip-off that a provocation was being prepared involving suicide belts. Suicide bombers were supposed to be seated in buses together with refugees. Unfortunately, this information was confirmed,” Shoigu said, as cited by TASS.
The Russian military managed to foil the plot that could have resulted in mass civilian death. They retrieved seven belts on Monday, thirty-two on Tuesday and nine on Wednesday.
“It’s not hard to imagine what could have happened if these suicide bombers blew themselves up in the buses with women and children,” the minister added.
Russia’s efforts to ensure a safe passage of civilians trapped in eastern Ghouta have also been plagued by a continuing misinformation campaign in support of the jihadists, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after his meeting with de Mistura.
“Unfortunately, the operation – and we got used to it – has been accompanied by a veiled campaign in support of the militants,” Lavrov noted. Fake news spread by the rebels included reports of people going hungry as a result of the siege, reports of indiscriminate civilian bombings, including with banned weaponry, as well as allegations of the Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons, Lavrov said, adding that the latter claim seems absurd “even from the point of military tactics.”

Refuting reports of mass arrests and a crackdown on those who had escaped the enclave, Lavrov said they were recycled allegations similar to those spread during the Aleppo liberation, which turned out to be myths.
Speaking of the de-escalation zones, of which there are four, including the one in Ghouta, Lavrov said that there are no plans to create more of them. He said he hopes that the ceasefire in Ghouta will soon take hold again, despite repeated violations by the militants who refused to cede from Al-Nusra, thus flouting their commitments made under the ceasefire deal.
As much as 90 percent of eastern Ghouta has already been liberated, Lavrov said, adding that he believes that life would return to normal in the suburb “in the nearest future.” Eleven thousand militants and 130,000 civilians have left Ghouta since the start of the evacuations, according to Shoigu.
Speaking about Syria’s future, de Mistura stressed the importance of the decisions made at the Syrian National Dialogue Congress meeting in Sochi in January.
Noting that the Congress “had a very important role” in supporting the Geneva peace process, de Mistura urged all parties involved to act in order to bolster it. The creation of a constitutional committee charged with drafting a new constitution for Syria should not be stalled, the special envoy said, adding that its makeup should be announced as soon as possible. The decision to create a 150-member committee was made possible through the agreement reached between some 1,393 delegates that were present in Sochi.
The special envoy also pledged UN support to alleviate the dire humanitarian crisis in Raqqa and other Syrian regions. Russia has repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of humanitarian assistance to the population of Raqqa, the former de-facto capital of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL), with Russian President Vladimir Putin calling for an investigation into the massive US-led coalition air strikes on residential areas in the city in a recent interview.
The UN will send an expert team from Damascus to Raqqa to evaluate the situation and determine what kind of humanitarian assistance to provide, Mistura said.

A spate of deadly bombings terrorized the city of Austin, Texas, for weeks in March, as packages exploded outside homes, by the side of a road, and even inside a FedEx facility.
The chaos finally ended Wednesday morning when the suspected bomber fatally blew himself up in his vehicle as law-enforcement officials closed in around him.
The bombing spree ultimately killed two people, not including the suspect, and injured five. Law-enforcement officials identified the suspect as 23-year-old Mark Anthony Conditt.
Here’s what we know about the victims:
Jon Herskovitz/Reuters
House was the first victim in the bombing spree that began on March 2, after a package left on his doorstep exploded. He died in a hospital shortly afterward.
House’s friends and family members described him as quiet, but driven. He was father to an eight-year-old girl and graduated from Texas State University in 2008 with a degree in business administration, finance, and financial management services, according to the Austin-American Statesman.
House had been working as a senior project manager for Texas Quarries and Acme Brick, and had recently begun attending Austin Community College, the Statesman reported.
“He wanted to be something different and bigger than what a lot of people thought he was going to do,” a high-school friend, Greg Padgitt, told the Statesman. “He was quiet, but jokey with the kids that he let in. He was a great kid.”
Austin police have faced criticism over how they responded to House’s death — at first, the police department described the explosion as an isolated incident and said there was no threat to the wider community — they even considered the possibility that he’d made the bomb himself.
“We can’t rule out that Mr. House didn’t construct this himself and accidentally detonate it, in which case it would be an accidental death,” Joseph Chacon, the assistant chief of the Austin Police Department, told media at the time.

Mason was killed in an explosion on March 12 from a package left at his door. His mother, Shamika Wilson, was also injured in the blast, though her current condition is unclear.
Mason was a senior at East Austin College Prep and a talented musician who played the double bass, was a member of a mariachi band, and taught music to underserved students in central Texas.

“He was every inch a musician … the very most remarkable talent in a most remarkable youth orchestra program,” Doug Dempster, dean of the University of Texas’s College of Fine Arts, said in a statement, according to the Austin-American Statesman. “He carried himself with a quiet kind of maturity that belied his youth.”
Mason’s family said Wednesday, through a statement shared by Pastor Gary Renfro of Corinth Missionary Baptist Church, that the bombing suspect’s death had brought them some closure.
“We are a family of faith and we know that with God all things are possible,” the statement said. “The most recent chain of events have brought some sense of closure that our beloved has received justice.”

Another package explosion severely injured Herrera on March 12, though authorities believed the package wasn’t intended for her, as it was addressed to another house.
Herrera lost fingers in the explosion and had to have her leg amputated, her cousin Joe Torres told The Washington Post. Her current condition is unclear.

The first attack that killed 39-year-old Anthony House happened on March 2. Two further bombings occurred on March 12. The first of these took place just before noon, after a package was left on the doorstep of a house. Seventeen-year-old Draylen Mason was killed and a woman in her 40s was seriously injured. Several hours later, a second explosion left an elderly woman, Esperanza Herrera, with life-threatening injuries.
The latest explosion on Sunday seriously wounded two men, aged 22 and 23, who were walking by the roadside when they accidentally triggered the bomb.
The Austin Police Department believes the series of bombings are all connected. “We are clearly dealing with what we expect to be a serial bomber at this point, based on the similarities between what is now the fourth device,” interim police chief Brian Manley told reporters on Monday.
However, the bombs have not been consistently similar. The first three bombings were in packages left on doorsteps, but the device that exploded on Dawn Song Drive in Travis County on Sunday was left by the roadside.
It was also more sophisticated than the previous bombs. Police believe that it may have been triggered by a tripwire and showed “a different level of skill above what we were already concerned that this suspect or suspects may possess,” Manley said.
Initially, many commentators suggested that the bombings could be racially motivated because the first three victims were all African-American or Latino. Additionally, the two men who have died were both from prominent African-American families in Austin and their families reportedly know each other.
By the time Ted Kaczynski had sent the number of bombs that have now gone off in African-American homes in Austin, the national FBI-USPS UNIBOM task force had already been created.

Authorities in Austin TX still have no suspect in the terrorist bombing attacks that are targeting prominent Black families. The bomb that injured the hispanic woman was intended for a Black neighbor that lived 2 doors down. These attacks are specifically aimed at Blacks citizens
— Tariq Nasheed (@tariqnasheed) March 17, 2018
However, the latest victims were both white men and the bomb went off in a predominantly white neighborhood in southwest Austin, which may suggest that the attacks are random.
“We were not willing to classify this as terrorism, as hate, because we just don’t know enough. And what we have seen now is a significant change from what appeared to be three very targeted attacks to what was last night a target that would have hit a random victim that happened to walk by,” Manley said on Monday.
The police have not yet identified a suspect, but they believe the bomber is likely to have a military or police background, given the technical skill required to make the devices.
“The device’s success, despite significantly different design, further suggests that the bombmaker behind these attacks is an accomplished one, and has likely to have received some training, perhaps as a military or police explosive ordnance disposal technician,” police said.
Austin police are offering a $ 100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or people responsible.

Muslim MPs have been sent threatening letters which urge people to carry out acid attacks against Muslims, bomb mosques and pull off hijabs. The ‘Punish A Muslim Day’ letters are being investigated by counter-terrorism officers.
The MPs were also sent packages with a “suspicious substance” inside. Three people were hospitalized on Monday and Tuesday as a precaution before the items were deemed not to be hazardous.
Labour MP for Bedford Mohammad Yasin received a package on Monday. His colleagues, Labour MP for Bethnal Green & Bow Rushanara Ali and Labour MP for Ealing Central and Acton Rupa Huq, have both tweeted to say they received similar packages.
Thanks for concern after suspect package received at my Commons Office. My staff have had the all-clear apart from one who is being checked out at hospital as he handled the irritant substance. Totally unacceptable for Muslim MPs to face this – just done a BBC interview on it. pic.twitter.com/wrIgE1cYdR

Thx Yasmin for securing the UQ.Have had the extremely unpleasant experience of opening an envelope with very same threatening letter today. https://t.co/AD0BAsHDZU
— Rushanara Ali (@rushanaraali) March 12, 2018
The letters advertise “Punish A Muslim Day,” which included a points system of Islamophobic actions and each of their “rewards.” The sickening point-scoring system ranges from 10 points if you “verbally abuse a Muslim” to 2,500 points if you “nuke Mecca.”
The letter calling for attacks on Muslim is just the latest example of rising Islamaphobia and deplorable hate crimes in this country. In my UQ to the Minister I called on the Govt. to do more to tackle such incitement to violence and help prevent the growth of such extreme views pic.twitter.com/dVr3ZVusol

Other acts include 50 points for throwing acid in a Muslim person’s face, 100 points for beating up a Muslim, and 250 points for torturing a Muslim using electrocution, skinning or use of a rack. It offers 500 points for butchering a Muslim using a gun, knife or vehicle, and 1,000 points for bombing or burning a mosque.
The messages were also sent to households across London, Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.
The sick letter says: “They have hurt you, they have made your loved ones suffer. They have caused you pain and heartache. What are you going to do about it? Are you a ‘sheep’ like the majority of the population?
“Sheep follow orders and are easily led, they are allowing the white majority nations of Europe and North America to become overrun by those who like nothing more than to do us harm and turn our democracies into Sharia-led police states.
“Only you can help turn this thing around, only you have the power. Do not be a sheep!”

Detective Chief Superintendent Martin Snowden, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said the letter is being investigated. “These letters seek to cause fear and offence among our Muslim communities. They also seek to divide us,” he said.

Austin police have linked Monday morning’s mail bombing, that killed a teen boy and injured a woman, with another deadly explosion earlier this month. A third explosion left a 75-year-old woman with “life-threatening injuries.”
Police Chief Brian Manley has warned Austin residents no to open their mail, following dual mail bombings in the Texas city on Monday. The investigation is being coordinated with units from both the FBI and ATF.
“Similar to the other two incidents, the victim came outside and found a package, picked it up and the box detonated,” Chief Brian Manley told a press conference. In reference to speculation that the bombings were a spate of hate crimes, Manley added that investigators haven’t identified a “specific victimology or ideology based on current evidence… We are willing to investigate any avenue.”
Based on evidence from all three scenes, the police believe the incidents are related but have yet to establish a motive or to identify the type of explosive used. “We are not calling it a serial bomber case,” the police chief confirmed. Two of the victims were African-American and the latest victim was Hispanic, so the department are not ruling out that these were hate crimes.
“All three incidents, up to this point, have occurred at residences. It is important that people be vigilant,” Manley added. He also confirmed that additional K9 explosives units have been brought in to the city to assist with the investigation.

Authorities are currently digging a 27km (17 mile) trench around the University of Maiduguri in Nigeria to prevent further attacks by Boko Haram militants following a major suicide bombing offensive that has killed dozens in recent weeks.
On Sunday, three suicide bombers attacked the university, killing one female security guard. Shortly after, four female suicide bombers attacked two villages near Maiduguri, killing 12 people.
A further two suicide bombings were carried out at the university at 4:20am on Monday, though there were no additional casualties. The area is at the frontline of the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency that has plagued Nigeria for years.
“In all, 16 persons including the suicide bombers died in the multiple explosions while 13 persons were injured,” said the Borno Police commissioner, Damian Chukwu, as cited by Reuters.
Previous suicide bomb blasts on June 7 and 9 killed 26 people. Authorities also claim to have foiled attacks in the northern cities of Maiduguri, Kano, Sokoto and Kaduna during Eid celebrations marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The trenches at Maiduguri University are designed to prevent vehicle attacks while limiting the points of entry to the campus for pedestrians, allowing security personnel to better focus their efforts.

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima is financing the construction project but has requested funding from the Nigerian government to build a more permanent defensive barrier.
Shettima is also recruiting additional security guards from armed militias that operate in the area to reinforce the local police presence and deter future Boko Haram attacks.
We will forever remain grateful to @MBuhari for his enormous commitment to ending this insurgency
— Kashim Shettima (@kashimshettima) June 24, 2017
“The Governor later went into the Vice Chancellor’s office and presided over a security meeting that was attended by the Garrison Commander of the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army, the Commissioner of Police and those in charge of internal security at the University,” the Borno State government wrote in a statement published on Facebook.
“The meeting agreed to contribute armed personnel from the Army, local vigilante, guards with the University in addition to erecting additional points for distance surveillance and night vision surveillance gadgets.”
Boko Haram roughly translates as “Western education is forbidden” and its stated aim in the Borno state region is the closure of the university.
The Islamist group has yet to officially claim responsibility for the most recent attacks, but the use of female suicide bombers fits its most recent modus operandi, Reuters reports, citing local police sources.

Tony Walter, who has been described as the Manchester attack’s 23rd victim, worked at a law firm near Edgware Road Underground station, where Mohammad Sidique Khan detonated a suicide bomb on July 7, 2005.
Walter was yards away from Khan when he set off the homemade device. Six people, as well as the bomber, died at the scene of the attack, while Walter was left with shrapnel injuries. It was one of four bombs set off in quick succession across the British capital.
Walter had struggled with the events he witnessed in 2005 and had been particularly distressed by the recent attacks in Westminster and Manchester.
He was said to have taken time off work in March, after Birmingham-based terrorist Khalid Masood drove into several people on Westminster Bridge and stabbed police officer Keith Palmer.
“After the Westminster attack he really struggled. He was off work for a few days saying he couldn’t cope with how it brought back the memories of 7/7,” a friend said, according to the Sun.
“Everyone that knew Tony believes he is the 23rd victim of the Manchester Arena attack. Suicide bomber Salman Abedi is responsible for Tony taking his life as well as those he killed,” the unnamed friend added.
Walker was found at his home in Tottenham, north London, on Wednesday – around 40 hours after the Manchester atrocity. The 52-year-old’s death is being treated as suicide.
“Police were called on Wednesday, 24 May shortly after 14.10 hours to an address following a concern for the welfare of the occupant,” a Scotland Yard spokesperson said.
“Officers forced entry to the property and found a 52-year-old man who was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious. The matter has been referred to the coroner.”
Walter’s sister-in-law, Sheila Walter, led the tributes.
“It’s a tragedy and we’re devastated. Tony was such a lovely man,” she said.
The 2005 bombings killed 56 people, including the four perpetrators, in a series of bombings across London.
The Westminster attack in March of this year took the lives of five people, including PC Palmer, as well as the attacker Masood.
The Manchester Arena bombing saw 22 people lose their lives, including 10 children and teens.
