The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for suicide bomb attacks on Libya’s foreign ministry in Tripoli, which have left at least three people dead and over half-a-dozen injured. Three armed gunmen stormed the foreign ministry of Libya’s internationally recognized government in Tripoli on Tuesday morning, killing three employees and injuring at least ten others. Later in the day, the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack, through its propaganda outlet. The assault on the diplomatic compound began at around 9:30am with the detonation of a car bomb in front of the building. Immediately afterwards the gunmen opened fire and two of them managed to get inside and blow themselves up. The third attacker was killed in the gunfire exchange with the ministry guards. Libya has been in a state of chaos and turmoil since 2011, when a NATO bombing campaign helped militants overthrow and assassinate Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. Ever since then the extremists have exploited the power vacuum, with sporadic clashes breaking out between various factions throughout the country and in the nation’s capital, Tripoli. Currently, Libya has two rival governments and a plan to hold a presidential election this year was postponed due to the continuing power struggle. The US, which had supported armed extremists against Gaddafi’s government but has since appeared uninterested in the fractured state’s fate, condemned the attack, somewhat ironically, stressing that it supports Libya’s struggle against terrorism as the country continues to “work towards a prosperous, stable, and secure” future. The U.S. strongly condemns today's terrorist attack on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in #Tripoli. We offer our sincere condolences and stand with all Libyans as they fight terrorism and work towards a prosperous, stable, and secure #Libya. — Robert Palladino (@StateDeputySPOX) December 25, 2018 Think your friends would be interested? The Saudi Press agency released a statement on Saturday explaining that the coalition was able to “increase their capacity” for refueling their aircraft and would do so independently going forward.
On Friday, Reuters reported, citing unnamed US officials, that Washington considering ending the refueling of coalition aircraft in Yemen, citing both the coalition’s own increased capabilities and growing international outrage over the human consequences of the war in Yemen. Opposition to US collaboration with the Saudi coalition in Yemen has increased following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
The Saudi-led coalition has been accused of targeting hospitals, water infrastructure, and other civilian targets, and raids on wedding parties and the recent bombing of a school bus have sparked international condemnation. The US and UK have both been criticized for continuing to sell arms to the coalition despite their targeting of civilians and alleged war crimes.
According to the UN, some 14 million Yemeni people – fully half the country’s population – are dependent on food aid for their survival, and more than 400,000 children are suffering from serious malnutrition. The destruction of civilian infrastructure has facilitated the growth of the worst cholera epidemic in history. The Saudi-led blockade of the port city of Hodeidah threatens to make things worse, as it is the entry point for most of the country’s food aid and medical supplies. Tens of thousands of civilians have died both as a result of airstrikes and because of starvation and disease.

Cesar Altieri Sayoc, the suspect in the nationwide bombing campaign against critics of President Trump, regularly took to Twitter to make thinly veiled death threats against other users and peppered some of the targets with abuse, according to a quick review of an account authorities believe belongs to Sayoc. Twitter initially allowed the posts to remain despite its stated policy barring threats.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, actor Jim Carrey, director and former actor Ron Howard, and the TMZ celebrity news service all received tweets from someone using the handle @hardrock2016 that made thinly veiled threats against their lives. Rochelle Ritchie, a political commentator who tweets under the @RochelleRitchie handle, received a similar tweet warning her that “We have nice silent air boat ride for u here on Everglades swamp. We will see you 4 sure. Hug your loved ones real close every time you leave home.” Similar to the tweets sent to others, the message directed at Ritchie included an image of her and accompanying images of the tarot card for death and TV news coverage purporting to report on a body being recovered from the Everglades.
Five hours, later, Ritchie tweeted that Twitter asked her to disregard the earlier refusal. “We’ve investigated and suspended the account you reported as it was found to be participating in abusive behavior,” company representatives wrote.
]]>France has initiated a procedure to revoke the Legion of Honor awarded to Syrian President Bashar Assad, an official of the French presidency told BFM TV broadcaster on Monday evening. “The Elysee [palace] confirms that a disciplinary procedure to withdraw the Legion of Honor of [President] Assad has been launched,” the official said.
Assad was made a knight of the Legion of Honor (Legion d’Honneur in French), the country’s highest decoration, back in 2001, when he met former French president Jacques Chirac. At that time, he had just succeeded his father Hafez Assad, who had ruled Syria for several decades.
A resolution was adopted in 2010 to make it easier to strip foreign recipients of the award, if they had committed “acts inconsistent with the honor,” according to BFM TV. Under French laws, the prestigious decoration is automatically withdrawn if the recipient is sentenced to at least one year in prison.
Previously, France revoked the awards given to American cyclist Lance Armstrong, British designer John Galliano and also Harvey Weinstein, after allegations of sexual harassment by the Hollywood producer surfaced.
The news comes on the heels of the latest missile strikes on Syria, conducted by the United States, Britain and France. The US-led attack hit three targets in Syria, a research center and military bases the coalition said were linked to Damascus’ chemical stockpiles, and was launched in response to an alleged chemical attack in Douma on April 7.
French president Emmanuel Macron defended the strike against Syria, conducted without any UN resolution, claiming that Paris was not acting unilaterally and that it was “the international community” that legitimized the military action. “We have complete international legitimacy to act within this framework,” Macron asserted in the interview, broadcast by BFM TV, RMC radio and Mediapart. “Three members of the Security Council have intervened.”
In a follow-up interview, Macron said he urged his US counterpart Donald Trump to limit the size of the strikes, adding, however, that he persuaded him to keep American troops in Syria for the long-term.

Last year, though, he produced more measured statements on Syria. Speaking to eight European newspapers, Macron argued that there is currently no viable alternative to Assad, who is preventing Syria from turning into a failed state. “I have not stated that Bashar al-Assad’s departure is a pre-condition for everything because nobody has shown me a legitimate successor,” he maintained at the time.

Thousands of Serbs honored the victims of the 1999 NATO bombings with a commemoration on Saturday, attended by Serbian president and many officials, including the Russian envoy, but with a glaring absence of Western diplomats.
The main commemorative event, held under the slogan “We will forgive, if we can, we will not forget while alive,” took place in the Southern town of Aleksinac which suffered heavily in the 1999 US-led NATO campaign.
Darkness and silence fell over the entire city center as the ceremony, attended by President Aleksandar Vucic and his cabinet ministers, opened with deafening sounds of air alarm sirens. At least 3,000 people gathered in front of the stage and the ruins of a building destroyed in NATO bombing, according to Sputnik’s correspondent. The Russian Ambassador to Serbia, Aleksandr Chepurin, who also attended the poignant ceremony, noted the glaring absence of representatives of Western states.
“Today once again none of the Western diplomats bothered to attend this ceremony. So they show no repentance and, moreover, believe they did everything right. Looks like the Serbs are not humans to them, but they nevertheless continue to teach us humanism,” said Chepurin.
Meanwhile in the capital Belgrade, about 500 demonstrators gathered in front of the Serbian Parliament in an anti-NATO protest commemorating the 19th anniversary of the Yugoslavia bombing. Protesters waved flags and lit flares, while others held banners with anti-NATO messages.
NATO justified its intervention without any approval of the UN Security Council, by accusing the Milosevic government of ethnically cleansing the province of Kosovo. The bombings lasted 78 days, from March 24 to June 10, 1999, and officially claimed at least 758 civilian lives – though Serbian sources say the true figure may be up to five times as much.

According to a recent poll, 19 year later a majority of Serbs would not accept an apology from NATO for its military intervention, and only 10 percent would wish to see their country become a member the trans-Atlantic military bloc.

BERLIN (Reuters) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday condemned the killing of civilians in Syria as a massacre, adding that Berlin would reach out to Russia in its efforts to stop the violence.
“What we currently see, the dreadful events in Syria, a regime fighting not against terrorists, but against its own people, the killing of children, the destruction of hospitals, all this is a massacre which needs to be condemned,” Merkel said.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

A top authority on North Korea has jokingly suggested the US launch an unorthodox attack on the country’s leader.
Jeffrey Lewis, the founding publisher of Arms Control Wonk and director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterrey, California, outlined a plan for the US to strike Kim Jong Un’s personal toilet.
Writing at The Daily Beast, Lewis was responding to increased chatter of a US strike on North Korea when he suggested the attack, but nonetheless, it illustrates the dangers of and motivations behind using military force to send a message.
Basically, reports have come forth that the US is tired of North Korea’s constant defiance, and wants to carry out a limited strike in response.
In theory, using force against a weaker enemy can remind them who is in charge. North Korea couldn’t really defend against a small US strike, but it doesn’t intend to defend.
North Korea’s military posture is entirely offensive. While they could do little to stop an incoming cruise missile or air strike, North Korea could easily start blasting Seoul, South Korea’s capital of 25 million with artillery shells.
Lewis seems to think the idea has some merit, but the difficulty lies in finding a target that’s important enough to matter, but not big enough to cause Kim to go to war. From The Daily Beast:
“The central challenge, as we contemplate a ‘bloody nose’ option for a limited military strike, is finding a suitable target that represents Kim Jong Un’s nose — a target that will allow our strike to be intimidating and humiliating to Kim, but not the sort of broad assault that might prompt him to retaliate with his growing stockpile of nuclear weapons.”
Lewis settles on a target of little strategic importance, but great personal relevance to Kim: His port-a-potty.
Kim almost always observes North Korean missile launches from a private trailer. The launches normally happen in the middle of nowhere, so comforts like a port-a-potty suited for a supreme party leader need to be shipped in.
KCNA Watch
“Destroying the port-a-potty will deny Kim Jong Un a highly valued creature comfort, while also demonstrating the incredible accuracy of US precision munitions to hold Kim and his minions at risk. It will send an unmistakable message: We can kill you while you are dropping a deuce,” writes Lewis.
Lewis refers to his own idea as hilarious, and “a comedy and an action movie—both at the same time,” but the US military may not be laughing.
Lewis’ idea, while funny, represents a rather circumspect approach to selecting the right target to use military force to send a message. While the verbal, diplomatic, and economic messages the world has tried time and time again have failed to get through to North Korea, President Donald Trump’s administration has floated the idea of military action more than any before it.

Terrorist attacks have occurred in London and Manchester in the past year, and the current threat level in the United Kingdom from international terrorism is severe, according to the government.
This means it is important for Britons to have the right advice on how to protect themselves and the people around them if caught up in a terrorist attack.
Express.co.uk contacted a representative from citizenAID, an mobile app dedicated to informing the public of what to do in the event of a terror attack, who has provided a set of guidelines.
The advice offers important steps on what to do to stay safe, as well as how to help others by treating injuries and informing the relevant authorities.
These are the seven steps it is important to take in a terror attack, according to Brigadier Tom Hodgetts, co-founder of citizenAID.
1 If there is an active threat, the safest thing to do is move away. Follow the police advice to Run, Hide, Tell.
2 When it is safe to do so, treat the injured. If you have equipment, use it. If you don’t have equipment it is ok to improvise.
3 Lives can be saved in the critical first few minutes if you stop bleeding.
4 Use a dressing or clothing to pack a wound and press firmly. I.e. A scarf, t-shirt or sock.
5 As a last resort for limb bleeding, which can’t be stopped by packing and pressure – you can use a tourniquet. Tourniquets CAN save lives when used for the right reasons.
6 Be prepared not scared: Download the free citizenAID
app, to understand how you can stay safe and save lives. Knowing what to do can reduce anxiety and improve performance even in these difficult situations.
7 When you call the emergency services, they will want to know the following information [SLIDE]:
a.SITUATION – What’s happening?
b.LOCATION – Where are you?
c.INJURED – How many and how severe [it only has to be an estimate if you’re unsure]?
d.DANGERS – Is there still any threat?
e.EMERGENCY SERVICES – What do you need?
Over half of Britons said they would visit Christmas markets despite the current “severe” threat level, in a recent survey.
This defiant attitude came despite the fact last year, there was a terrorist attack involving a truck at a Christmas market in Breitscheidplatz, Berlin that left 12 people dead.
