Samsung has posted a 17.57 trillion Korean won (US$ 15.45 billion) operating profit for Q3 2018 like it expected, setting a record high for the Korean corporation. As has been the case over the past years, its chip business is the company’s top earner. It made 13.65 trillion won (US$ 12 billion) in operating profit for the quarter from a 24.77 trillion won (US$ 22 billion) consolidated revenue. Samsung’s mobile division also posted a 24.77 trillion (US$ 22 billion) consolidated revenue, but its Q3 profit was a measly 2.2 trillion won ($ 1.9 billion won) due to decreased sales of mid- to low-end products and increased marketing costs.

Samsung knows that the competition is only bound to become tighter as more and more premium phones make their way to the market. Clearly, its decent flagship sales aren’t enough to make up for the division’s mediocre performance. For 2019, the company plans to strengthen its mobile segment by launching foldable and 5G smartphones, as well as changing its low- to mid-range phone strategy to attract a millennial audience. Samsung might reveal its first foldable phone as soon as November, possibly before it shows off its larger foldable displays.

Yes, the Korean corporation also plans to offer flexible and foldable displays for cars and larger devices like laptops, all in an effort to expand its OLED business in 2019. The OLED segment of its display division posted a higher profit than the previous quarter due to the demand for flexible screens, so Samsung has a basis for that strategy.

While Samsung is expecting price declines for NAND memory chips, it’s also expecting an increase in demand from the growing cloud market and bigger mobile storage offerings. In addition, to ensure that its chip division will continue to do well, it’s planning to make its SoCs more competitive by leveraging its 5G modem technology. The company will also diversify its product line-up with 3D sensors, fingerprint-on-display sensors, as well as chips for automotive and Internet of Things applications.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has vowed to bolster cooperation and friendship between his country and China. His key policy speech came the day before he makes the first trip to Beijing by a Japanese leader in seven years. Japan and China are both responsible for the region’s peace and prosperity, Abe said, adding that he hoped to achieve it by boosting exchanges in all areas, from business to sports and politics. Twitter has repeatedly come under fire for not doing enough to stop hate speech, allowing outside groups to sow political discord and failing to limit the spread of misinformation. To address these issues, the company announced earlier this year that it was looking for outside experts to help in its effort to promote healthy, open and civil conversations on its platform. Now, it’s acquiring a company that might be able to boost those efforts internally.

Twitter announced today that it is purchasing Smyte, a San Francisco-based firm that “specializes in safety, spam and security issues.” In a blog post, Twitter said today, “Smyte’s team, technology and company mission are aligned with our focus on improving the health of conversation on Twitter, and we believe this will be a powerful addition to our ongoing work.”

Since reaching out for ideas from experts, Twitter has also had company leaders, including CEO Jack Dorsey, answer questions from users live on Periscope, announced a study that will explore whether publicizing its rules improves the civility of conversations on its site and started hiding tweets it deems to be from trolls.

“The Smyte team has dealt with many unique issues facing online safety and believes in the same proactive approach that we’re taking for Twitter: stopping abusive behavior before it impacts anyone’s experience,” Twitter said today. “We can’t wait until they join our team to help us make changes that will further improve the health of the public conversation.”

Amazon continues to bring smart home startups under its wing with its newest acquisition. According to a Reuters report, the online retailer agreed to buy Ring, maker of connected video doorbells and smart home security cameras, for reportedly more than $ 1 billion.

The California-based startup is a logical acquisition for Amazon, given its recent dive into the smart home security sphere. The company launched Amazon Key last fall, a service that uses a security camera and smart door lock to allow couriers access to customers’ homes to deliver packages.

Amazon Key is meant to be a more convenient and secure way for customers tor receive Amazon orders as package theft rises. But the service has been met with raised eyebrows as many questioned the security of Amazon’s system itself. Ring could help Amazon bolster customer confidence in Amazon Key: Ring’s smart video doorbell uses an embedded camera to let users see who’s at their door (via Ring’s mobile app) and a speaker/mic system to allow the user and the guest to communicate.

Demonstrators waved Syrian flags in the central square of the Kurdish-dominated city of Afrin, as Damascus sent militias to reinforce locals in their resistance against the Turkish onslaught.

Amateur footage showed several dozen participants climbing on cars and monuments, while hoisting portraits of Syrian President Bashar Assad, as a larger crowd observed without joining in.

Government-allied units relieved the city, which continues to be under siege from Turkish and anti-Assad forces, at the beginning of the week.

In its latest bid for relevance, Atari is glomming onto the cryptocurrency craze. The company is hoping to bolster its gambling business in Europe with Atari Token, according to Bloomberg. “Our aim is to take strategic positions with a limited cash risk, in order to best create value with the assets and Atari brand,” CEO Frederic Chesnais noted in a release. Like Kodak and, err, Long Island Iced Tea before it, the stock market has responded favorably to the news, pushing Atari share prices up by over 60 percent after the company announced its intent to jump into cryptocurrency. Maybe now the company can afford to tell people what it’s going to include in the Ataribox.

The Eternal City that is Rome is going through somewhat of a budgetary crisis at the moment, and with cash in short supply, officials are now even eyeing up the city’s iconic Trevi Fountain.

Every year, millions of tourists flock to the former seat of empire to view the city’s many sites. A good deal of these toss coins into the near 300-year-old fountain, the haul of which reportedly hit $ 1.5 million in 2016 alone, chump change compared to the city’s estimated €12 billion ($ 14 billion) debt.

It’s believed that anyone who turns their back on the baroque masterpiece and tosses a coin into the fountain is destined to return. The cash is usually scooped up and given to Catholic charity Caritas, but not from April 2018, if Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi has her way.

It’s understood that it’s not only the Trevi Fountain that is being targeted but all of the city’s monumental fountains. Raggi has reportedly earmarked the coveted cash for projects yet to be decided on by city hall, although il Giornale reports that some of the money will be redirected to “social welfare projects.”

The city’s debt essentially consists of financial and commercial debt, with other types affecting the figure to a lesser extent. Basically, and perhaps unsurprisingly, more than half of the debt is in the hands of banks, whereas private debt makes up just over a quarter of the €12 billion.

It’s unclear how tourists will feel about the city pilfering the fountain, where Swedish beauty Anita Ekberg took her infamous dip in Federico Fellini’s classic film ‘La Dolce Vita’.

In June, Amazon announced it would acquire Whole Foods in a $ 13.7 billion transaction. In an instant, rival grocers Kroger, Walmart and Target saw their market values drop an aggregate $ 22 billion.

Now this week, Amazon announced a partnership with Sears to sell Kenmore’s appliances on Amazon.com. In similar fashion, shares of Home Depot and Lowe’s plummeted, wiping out $ 12 billion in market value.

The appliance industry has been largely shielded from Amazon’s dominance. Amazon has remained a minor player so far, and the big box retailers still wield significant power. To date, Home Depot, Lowe’s and the other retailers have been successful in preventing major appliance brands from selling on Amazon. With the Kenmore deal, however, this landscape has changed radically.

Appliance sales is a high-touch shopping segment. Consumers like to be able to see and touch appliances before committing to buy. Appliances need to be installed and repaired, so shoppers generally prefer buying from a local store where they know they can obtain these services. To date, ecommerce players have not found a way to break into this ecosystem.

But with Amazon battling Apple and Google to own the smart home assistant segment, it’s not hard to imagine that Jeff Bezos has ambitions of integrating Alexa (and still-in-development AI technology) into Kenmore home appliances. As an Amazon-connected device, your refrigerator could intelligently know when you need to order items, then place orders for you, which could then be delivered to you via Amazon Fresh or be available for pick up at your local Whole Foods location. You can imagine Kenmore’s entire line of washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, and home climate systems being integrated with Alexa and sold and installed at your local Sears store.

And if Amazon acquired Sears, it would also get access to 650 physical retail locations.

Clearly, gaining access to physical locations is a priority for the e-commerce giant – witness its Amazon Go initiative, its NYC flagship store (with more coming), and the Whole Foods acquisition. By acquiring Sears, Amazon would get a network of locations to rival Best Buy, where it could even provide services to compete with Best Buy’s Geek Squad. Consumers will need services to install and optimize smart home technology, and a Sears acquisition could give Amazon a big leg up on Apple and Google in the smart home race.

It seems clear that Amazon envisions a future in which consumers interact with the e-commerce service via voice, in the home, and in physical retail locations. Physical retailers are under pressure, and the ones that survive and thrive will be the ones that are able to evolve their spaces into digitally-enabled interaction points, providing consumers with experiences, services, and opportunities to build community. Amazon is clearly moving towards this future, and Sears may just be its next target along the way.
