Motown could soon be the home of a brand that aims to match vintage tough-truck design with electric-vehicle technology, if everything goes the way that Bollinger Motors hopes over the next few months. In the early days of the automobile, one leading EV brand was Detroit Electric, founded in the Motor City in 1907. There’s a modern effort to revive the Detroit Electric brand name, but that startup is now based in the U.K. with plans to manufacture in China, so Bollinger’s pending relocation to southeastern Michigan stands apart.

–

Robert Bollinger, the CEO behind the small company with aspirations to produce a few thousand of its boxy, retro-inspired trucks per year, has bankrolled the company so far. But he recognizes that its current location—in remote upstate New York—is far from ideal for an auto-industry newcomer. So instead, the startup carmaker is shopping for space to house its headquarters and engineering in the Motor City, as soon as possible.

–

When we caught up with Bollinger at the Detroit auto show, it wasn’t quite a done deal, but he said he has already been working with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and spoke as if the move were already underway. The company has been considering the entire Detroit metropolitan area (General Motors assembles the Chevrolet Bolt EV in Lake Orion, a far northern suburb). Setting up shop in downtown Detroit might be too expensive for his much smaller-scale operation, Bollinger acknowledged, but the main goal of the move is to be closer to the company’s potential supplier base as it moves to the procurement and bidding stage of its project. Eventually, it hopes to have assembly done under contract by a supplier.

–

Big and Tall

–

There’s good reason behind why the scale of Bollinger’s operation—and its ambition—looks a bit different than for other startup EV carmakers. Bollinger has no plans to enter the conventional passenger-vehicle market and no big funders in China. Its B1 SUV will weigh about 5000 pounds but will be classified as a Class 3 truck (Medium Duty, by federal standards), engineered for a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds, nearly the same as the original Hummer H1.

–

Bollinger B1

–

With that classification, Bollinger has found a regulatory sweet spot in which owners won’t need a special license to drive the vehicle but the company will be exempt from the requirement to perform physical crash tests for government approval, although simulated collisions are part of the engineering process. Class 3 trucks require three-point safety belts and LATCH child-seat anchors but aren’t required to have airbags. There will be plenty of acknowledgment that these vehicles are mostly for personal use, though. “It doesn’t need the child safety release for the frunk [front trunk], but of course we’ll have it,” Bollinger said.

–

The Class 3 designation isn’t just what makes the business case viable; it’s also what will allow the firm to start deliveries by the end of 2019, Bollinger claimed. And it allows for the possibility of all sorts of body variants without having to jump through the safety hoops all over again.

Bollinger wants to keep the presentation simple, with a single launch specification. The stretched B1—its second prototype—is a four-door with a total length of 159 inches (typical of subcompact cars) and a wheelbase of 114 inches. Bollinger expects that four out of five early-ordering customers will want that configuration rather than the two-door version.

–

–

The B1 is likely to employ a battery pack of about 100 kWh, which should yield about 200 miles of range, according to Bollinger. In its second prototype, Bollinger is moving to a pack shape that’s longitudinal, for installation down the middle of the vehicle, rather than under the back seat. This should allow even more ground clearance.

–

Much hinges on the battery choice, Bollinger admitted. Since the first prototype, Bollinger has changed course on fast-charging standards, from CHAdeMO to CCS (Combo), and is in the midst of weighing the trade-offs among battery-cooling systems. While driving, battery cooling may not be needed, but “it all comes down to the charging,” he said. “There’s no scenario you can put it in under normal [driving] situations that will get the battery as hot as with fast charging—and we hope to make it as quick as possible.”

–

More TVR Than Tesla

–

The company is currently in the procurement and bidding process for its prototype and has “many spreadsheets of numbers,” according to Bollinger. “We want to find at least three different providers/vendors for each component, get bids, and see what our up-front is going to be.” To that, Bollinger is looking to venture-capital firms and aiming to raise double-digit millions to bring it to production—although he’s fervent about not spending more than that.

–

Bollinger won’t become a big Michigan employer on its own. After relocating, Bollinger expects to expand his engineering staff from its current four to maybe 20. “Our idea is to use a lot of third-party engineering help and manufacturing help,” he added, reiterating that the B1 isn’t intended for mass production. “Eventually we’ll need a deeper employee base, which is fine, but we want to be a small, nimble, efficient company—kind of the opposite of what people believe EVs to be now, which is billions of dollars wasted by unknown companies.”

–

Bollinger B1_mtns

–

The B1 prototype was revealed last July, after taking about a year and a half to build. Bollinger said he wants the vehicle to be made of U.S.-sourced parts and materials as much as possible, with an emphasis on durability—”the last truck you buy,” he said—with a frame, roll cage, and suspension arms made of steel and aluminum for the body panels and the remainder of the chassis components. The body panels, flat for ease of prototyping, will be just a bit more rounded in production models, he says, but their appearance will still fit in with vintage SUVs.

–

–

Bollinger hasn’t taken money-down reservations yet, but it has gathered information from more than 13,700 hand raisers. Once pricing and production details are released, we’ll have to see how much momentum the company can gather in Motown.

New York-based Bollinger Motors is busy developing — andtesting – its retro-looking, hardcore off-road EV, the B1 sport utility truck. The company has also been searching for a site in the U.S. to manufacture the electric SUV. Meanwhile, as Curbed Detroit reports, Bollinger is planning a move to the Motor City, with hopes of setting up a research and design center in the near future.

Founder Robert Bollinger told Curbed Detroit that he visited the city during the Detroit Auto Show to attend the event and check out real estate. He originally intended to locate along the I-75 corridor, but has since decided that he wants the company to be closer to the people of Detroit. It’s near vendors and potential talent, and the company plans to add to its eight-person employee roster after the move.

The site, which Bollinger expects to be around 15,000 to 25,000 square feet, would be a center for research and design, though Bollinger could choose to manufacture in Detroit, too.

Bollinger revealed the B1 last year, and plans to launch the truck in 2019, ramping up production into 2020. The B1 is powered by either a 60- or 100-kWh battery pack a and a pair of electric motors providing 360 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. It offers up to 200 miles of range, and has an estimated combined fuel economy of 67.4 miles per gallon equivalent. For off-road driving, it features a self-leveling, four-wheel independent suspension, adjustable ride height, disconnecting anti-roll bars and a set of BFGoodrich LT285/70R17 Mud Terrain tires. Bollinger said in October that it already had over 10,000 reservations for the B1.

It’s only been a couple of months since Bollinger Motors unveiled its B1 all-electric sport utility truck, but, the company reports, that’s enough time to have racked up over 10,000 reservations for the upcoming EV. The company achieved that number on the same weekend it published a video of the B1 in off-road testing, which you can watch above.

Bollinger, which began in 2014 and for whom the B1 is its first product, will be bringing the electric truck to the SEMA show in Las Vegas at the end of the month. The company has been busy working to test and market the B1 while it works toward securing a production facility in the U.S. The reservations are not binding, and Bollinger hasn’t yet announced pricing on the B1. The response, though, indicates a lot of interest in the rugged ute.

“I can’t believe we’ve reached this number of reservations so quickly,” said Bollinger Motors CEO Robert Bollinger. The company says the reservations “represent hundreds of millions of dollars in potential revenue for the company from eventual vehicles sales,” and that fleet orders won’t be tallied until pricing is announced.

In addition to the off-roading video above, Bollinger recently published videos of the B1 testing at the track. The company has also published a rendering of a four-door version of the B1 (in orange!), which will have a wheelbase 9 inches longer than the model seen above.

Bollinger Motors revealed the B1 electric sport utility truck this summer, and now is busy preparing to bring it to market. That involves a lot of testing. Yes, it’s an off-roader, but Bollinger needs to test under a variety of conditions, so, as we see in the video above, the company took the B1 to the track.

In the video, we get to hear the whine of the electric motors, which together provides 360 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. Bollinger claims a 0-60 time of just 4.5 seconds, and it certainly looks quick on the track.

A second video shows more footage from the test track, with the Bollinger team putting the B1 through its paces, then checking it to make sure it can stand up to the abuse:

So far, the Bollinger B1 is looking pretty good, and seeing it in motion has us only more excited for its launch (and hopefully a chance behind the wheel). We’re also hoping for more footage from Bollinger in the near future. We’d love to see the B1 in off-road testing.

Need a refresher on what the Bollinger B1 is all about? The company also created a technical animation of the electric truck, giving us a look at what’s under the surface.

Anyone who ever played with Tonka trucks and radio-controlled off-road toys, or really wanted a Mercedes-Benz G-class, a Land Rover Defender, or an International Scout—which, it seems, could include nearly every American—might find something oddly compelling about the Bollinger Motors B1.

–

Although Bollinger will have to clear many hurdles before it can bring this all-electric SUV to market, it’s refreshingly different from the luxurious Tesla Model X crossover or even the Workhorse W-15, an all-electric pickup that’s also in the works. Put on your camo pants, head off into the woods, and forget about the price of oil, and you just might find the spirit of the Bollinger B1.

–

“This is the culmination of what has been a 40-year-long boyhood dream of mine,” founder and CEO Robert Bollinger confirmed in a press release. That dream consists of a very rugged, off-roadable, back-to-basics sport-utility truck with an all-electric powertrain.

–

Bollinger B1_2x4

–

It’s compact and quite short—attributes that aid maneuverability and add off-road ability—with an approach angle of 56 degrees, a departure angle of 53 degrees, and a break-over angle of 33 degrees. The B1 is just 150 inches long, or about a foot shorter than either the current two-door Jeep Wrangler or the two-door Land Rover Defender that was sold in the United States in the 1990s and some international markets even today. Given the length, the truck’s width of 76.5 inches and height of 73.5 inches help counter the relatively short 105.0-inch wheelbase (about the same as a Toyota FJ Cruiser) and give it that blocky, grounded stance.

–

Tread Lightly—and Silently

–

Despite its base ground clearance of 15.5 inches (adjustable from 10 to 20 inches, and with anti-roll bars that can be disconnected), the truck’s center of gravity is low, Bollinger claims, thanks to the packaging: The B1’s battery pack, front and rear motors, and power-management systems are all packed under the floor and between the chassis rails. The B1 utilizes lots of aluminum in its underpinnings, reserving steel for its rollover protection. Bollinger claims to have designed the hydraulic-assist steering in-house, while high-offset aluminum wheels are mounted with mud-terrain tires.

–

The four-passenger interior is refreshingly simple and retro styled. It was designed with the rugged outdoors adventurer in mind, according to the company, carrying through some of the look of the brash Gunhouse Grey color scheme. The interior design is upright and very mid-20th century in theme, with details including circular gauges, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a column-mounted shifter marked out for PRNDL operation. The interior can be hosed down, and the floor is coated with polyurethane. Like Teslas (and Porsche sports cars and some other mid- or rear-engined sports cars), there’s a “frunk” under what looks like a traditional engine hood, but this one’s big enough for up to 24 two-by-four boards. With a pass-through essentially the full length of the vehicle, you can fit boards up to 12 feet long with the liftgate closed, Bollinger says, which sounds to us like a pretty neat trick for a vehicle that’s 12.5 feet long overall.

–

Bollinger B1_interior

–

As is the case for Tesla models, the B1 will be offered in versions differentiated by their battery capacity. A base version with a 60-kWh battery will provide a 120-mile range, and one with a 100-kWh battery shoots for a 200-mile range. Charging rates haven’t been disclosed, but the B1 will have CHAdeMO Level 3 fast charging that should allow an 80 percent charge in roughly an hour. Dual 110-volt AC power outlets are good for power tools or camping equipment, and while Bollinger hasn’t yet confirmed it, you can bet the company is looking into a power takeoff that could truly harness the battery’s capacity for help in natural disasters (or powering that off-the-grid cabin).

–

Regardless of battery pack, the motors produce 360 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque, making the 3900-pound B1 capable of a 4.5-second zero-to-60-mph time, Bollinger claims—which would be quicker than the 4.8 seconds C/D recorded in our last test of the Mercedes-AMG G63—and a 127-mph top speed.

–

–

Bollinger obviously has a lot yet to prove. While it’s relatively easy to present a one-off prototype, it’s much harder to bring a vehicle to any level of volume production. Bollinger confirmed that the B1 will be built in the United States, likely with the assistance of an established third-party manufacturer. With first deliveries targeted for early 2019, the company is looking to open retail outlets—both company-owned and franchised dealers—in major U.S. cities. It’s gathering info from hand-raisers now but won’t start accepting $ 1000 down payments until early 2018. We see many roles for the B1 to fit in with its quiet capability—for conservationists, hunters, bird-watchers, energy hawks and, well, people who crave an SUV that worships flat panels.

Not every electric car needs to be a high-tech speed machine capable of sorting your email, giving you a back rub and making you an espresso, all while hustling down the highway on its own.

An electric car can also be a low-maintenance, utilitarian workhorse that would be right at home for example on a farm or work site.

Thankfully there is such a vehicle, or there will be soon: the B1 from electric car startup Bollinger Motors.

Bollinger, the brainchild of entrepreneur Robert Bollinger, who lives on a farm in Hobart, New York, revealed the B1 late on Thursday at a media event in New York City.

car2Courtesy of High Gear MediaThe company describes the vehicle as the world’s first fully electric sport utility truck.

It’s a no-nonsense pickup truck capable of handling the roughest terrain—while producing zero emissions. It reminds us a lot of the electric Land Rover Defender prototype unveiled in 2013, though the Bollinger B1 has been fully designed and engineered in the United States.

It will also be built here, with Bollinger currently conducting feasibility studies with a number of local independent vehicle manufacturers.

The B1 sits on a bespoke aluminum chassis that weighs just 295 pounds and incorporates the complete powertrain system as well as off-road suspension. It sports a wheelbase of 105 inches, front and rear tracks of 68 inches, an approach angle of 56 degrees, departure angle of 53 degrees, and break over angle of 33 degrees.

The chassis also includes a hydraulic power steering system developed in-house, and it rides on Mud Terrain LT285/70/R17 tires with high-offset 17-inch aluminum wheels. The base ride height provides for 15.5 inches of ground clearance but is adjustable using a self-leveling, 4-wheel independent, hydro-pneumatic suspension within the 10 inches of wheel travel. Disconnecting anti-roll bars allow traction enhancing, full suspension articulation during off-road maneuvers.

car3Courtesy of High Gear MediaAs has become commonplace in electric cars, housing all of the mechanicals within the chassis keeps the center of gravity low and frees up interior space. For the B1, a high-strength steel rollover structure sits on top and provides crash protection.

For the powertrain, Bollinger has gone with a dual-motor setup consisting of front- and rear- mounted synchronous electric motors driving all four wheels and delivering a peak 360 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. The company plans to offer two lithium-ion battery pack options to suit budgets and requirements: 60 or 100 kilowatt-hours, producing 120 or 200 miles of range, respectively.

The truck has a standard 240-volt Level 2 charging port on its left-front fender, and for the moment, a CHAdeMO DC quick-charging port on the right-front fender. With the latter, a full charge of the 100-kwh battery could be done in 75 minutes. Otherwise, charging takes 12.1 hours when using a Level 2 220-volt outlet.

The 0-60 mph time is about 4.5 seconds and the top speed is 127 mph. The curb weight is 3,900 pounds while the gross vehicle weight rating is 10,001 pounds (recommended payload is 6,100 pounds). One interesting regulatory note is that the weight rating allows the B1 to qualify as a Class 3 commercial truck which considerably reduces regulatory requirements compared to vehicles intended purely for passenger use.

Bollinger says it’s too early to announce pricing. However, the company says it will start taking $ 1,000 deposits in early 2018. Once a production site is secured, Bollinger says deliveries could start within 19 months. Sales and service will be handled directly initially but Bollinger hopes to eventually open retail locations in major cities across the country.

Bollinger Motors unveils B1 electric sport utility truck https://briefnews.eu/bollinger-motors-unveils-b1-electric-sport-utility-truck/ https://briefnews.eu/bollinger-motors-unveils-b1-electric-sport-utility-truck/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2017 01:57:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bollinger-motors-unveils-b1-electric-sport-utility-truck/

After years of work and months of teasing, Bollinger Motors has unveiled its B1 all-electric sport utility truck in its home state of New York. The first thing anyone will notice about the B1 won’t be its newfangled electric powertrain, but rather its old-school looks, which includes a classic three-box design.

It rides high, and its big mud tires immediately signal that this vehicle has off-road capability, while its minimalist styling and flat surfaces speak to its utility. Inside, the B1 has sealed gauges and polyurethane-coated floor pans. If the interior gets dirty (and we suspect it will), it can simply be hosed down.

The B1 is powered by either a 60- or 100-kWh battery pack a and a pair of electric motors providing 360 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. It’s surprisingly quick, doing 0-60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds. The 60-kWh pack offers 120 miles of driving range and charges in 7.3 hours on a Level 2 charger, or 45 minutes on a DC fast charger. The 100-kWh pack offers 200 miles of range, and recharges in 12.1 hours (Level 2) or 75 minutes (DC fast charger). The B1 uses the CHAdeMO charging standard. Estimated fuel economy is a combined 67.4 miles per gallon equivalent.

With Bollinger’s first vehicle, the emphasis is on “utility,” and the electric powertrain is part of that. With front and rear motors, the B1 is all-wheel-drive, and its combination of torque and ground clearance (adjustable from 10 to 20 inches) mean that is will make itself at home on or off the road. The B1 features a self-leveling, four-wheel independent suspension, and disconnecting anti-roll bars to allow for maximum articulation off-road. A set of BFGoodrich LT285/70R17 Mud Terrain tires provides traction.

“Since the B1 is an all-electric truck, it’s really a portable energy source,” says Bollinger Motors CEO Robert Bollinger. For work in the field, the B1 offers a number of power outlets, including a pair of 110-volt plugs in the back of the truck. The vehicle also offers several storage areas, including a 14-cubic-foot frunk, and a rear cargo area that can accommodate 72 half-inch sheets of drywall with the rear seats removed. A passthrough stretching from the rear bed to the frunk makes more room for longer items, and can fit 24 2x4s at lengths of up to 12 feet with the tailgate closed. The B1 can also tow 6,100 pounds.

Bollinger says it will release pricing later this year, and is still working to secure manufacturing in the US. Once that is finalized, Bollinger expects to begin deliveries of the B1 in 19 months.

Take some of the tweed-jacket, traditionalist design character of the original Land Rover Series 1 and mix in some of the modern features and comforts of the Jeep Wrangler and the Toyota FJ Cruiser, and you’re probably not far from what New York State upstart Bollinger Motors hopes to build. Except it intends for it to be purely electric.

–

Most automakers—including fledgling electric-vehicle makers—have started out with a commuter car, a flagship sedan, or a racy sports car for their first EV. But for Bollinger Motors, it makes a lot of sense to apply its electric-vehicle know-how to a rugged, traditional SUV first.

–

Bollinger Motors started in 2014 out of a renovated car-repair shop and is led by Robert Bollinger, a newbie to the auto industry with a varied résumé that includes having worked on an organic hair- and skin-care business. The automaker isn’t looking for outside funding, but it won’t discuss how it plans to raise the staggering amounts needed for all the steps from proper vehicle development through sourcing, certification, and production.

–

So far, Bollinger has teased only a partial side-angle shot of its SUV ahead of its anticipated reveal this July. But in the meantime, the company has revealed a few other details including some locked-in dimensions as well as a preview of the rolling chassis it has engineered that will underpin the SUV and, perhaps, a longer-wheelbase pickup to follow.

–

An Off-Roader at Its Core

–

The 295-pound chassis is built of aluminum but has a high-strength-steel rollover structure. The truck houses all of its core electric components within the chassis rails—with lithium-ion-battery storage under the driver and passenger, high-voltage systems at the middle of the vehicle, and motor systems at the front and rear.

–

Bollinger chassis

–

The truck rolls on BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain 285/70R-17 light-truck tires with high-offset, eight-lug alloy wheels and geared axle hubs that permit the whole suspension to be raised on the chassis. An adjustable, self-leveling four-wheel independent suspension permits 10 inches of wheel travel, and the anti-roll bars can be disconnected to allow full articulation for off-roading. The steering is hydraulically assisted.

–

It’s a good size for off-roading. The wheelbase is just 105 inches—about the same as the Toyota FJ Cruiser, which is much loved by off-road enthusiasts, but nearly 10 inches longer than the wheelbase of the two-door Jeep Wrangler. Approach and departure angles are also impressive, at 56 and 53 degrees respectively, while the breakover angle is 33 degrees.

–

Based on the rolling chassis and the placement of the steering column, we’d venture to say that the production vehicle will have an extremely upright—and perhaps refreshingly retro—driving position.

–

Who’s the target buyer?

–

“Because it will have class-leading off-roading credentials, we think that the vehicle will be well suited for outdoor enthusiasts as well as various government agencies with clean-fleet initiatives,” said chief marketer and spokesman Jeff Holland. The company can reach a break-even point with only modest sales, he argued, adding that it’s “a very standard back-to-basics SUT from a materials and packaging standpoint, which also saves cost.” Pricing is to be competitive with comparable SUVs available today; Bollinger said the company will ask for $ 1000 deposits, fully refundable, when it begins taking orders.

–

Ambitious Timeline, As Rivals Get Ready

–

The company is aiming for first deliveries in 2019 and is starting certification and compliance work on the vehicle this spring, yet how or where the company will produce this truck remains a mystery. It will be built in the United States with what Holland described as “a well-known and established partner with deep experience in building on- and off-road vehicles.” You won’t see Bollinger looking overseas for production locations, either. “It is important to us that the design and engineering—which was started and continues in New York—as well as the manufacturing and production stay right here in the U.S.,” said Holland.

–

The idea of all-electric off-roading might sound good to some but not to others. Conservationists might appreciate how there’s no rumbling exhaust to scare wildlife, no tailpipe to scrape, no oil pan to shear off, and no driveshaft to maim when you’re high centered. On the other hand, off-roading while in need of a charge could bring a whole new meaning to the term “range anxiety”—there are no jerrycans, and there’s no possibility that any AAA charging truck will come to the rescue after you’ve scrambled over a rocky ridge.

–

–

Bollinger faces a rather narrow window in which to prove it’s not just peddling vaporware. Its closest rival in the short term could prove to be Workhorse, an Indiana company that is courting the fleet market and has already received a 200-truck order for its all-electric W-15 from UPS. Like Bollinger’s truck, the W-15 isn’t a conversion vehicle and has completely new underpinnings not shared with any other vehicle. There’s also a Tesla pickup in the works—all electric, of course, and anticipated to go on sale in two to three years. And if this proves to be a viable segment, don’t think truck stalwarts Ford, General Motors, and Ram are going to sit idly by. Although now barren, the electric-truck landscape could flourish in just a few years.
