Boiler and central heating issues are common during cold weather, however, you could save yourself from frozen pipes with a quick trick.

An expert has advised that taking just 30 seconds tonight to do this simple hack, which anyone can do, will significantly lower your risk of frozen pipes.

It involves tending to plumbing pipes which are placed behind closed doors, such as in kitchen cabinets, as these are most vulnerable to freezing.

Simply opening up the closed doors separating your pipes from the rest of your home can help you to prevent frozen pipes, an expert from AS Plumbing and Gas told Express.co.uk.

“Being behind closed doors, kitchen plumbing frozen pipes are vulnerable, as the heat from the rest of the house can’t reach them,” said the expert.

He advised a simple solution to protect these particular pipes: “Open the cabinet doors to allow heat to circulate into the cabinets.”

If your home is particularly chilly, a strategically placed fan or heater may also be able to help.

“A fan or portable heater pointed inside the cabinet helps circulate warm air,” the expert explained.

Why do pipes freeze?

Frozen pipes occur when the temperatures outside drop to below zero degrees Celsius, meaning the water in your pipes become frozen too.

The water then expands within the pipe as it freezes, putting you at risk of burst or leaking pipes – and a sky high plumber bill to boot.

Frozen pipes are naturally more likely when the weather outside is particularly cold, for instance during this weekend’s snow forecast.

Is it cheaper to leave your central heating on all the time or turn it on and off? The issue is a popular debate.

Some believe it is better to control your thermostat by turning it up and down during the day, or putting it on a timer.

But what do the experts think about this issue? Sadly for some, Caitlin Bent – an energy expert at the Energy Saving Trust (EST), isn’t buying the “keep it on” philosophy.

“It’s a common myth that leaving the heating on low all day will help you save energy,” she told The Sun.

”In reality, it’s best to use a timer or programmer to make sure your home is only heated when you’re there.

Boiler and central heating systems can often play up in cold weather, and this is due to the effect the falling temperature has on your pipes.

However, you can easily prevent problems before they even happen with a simple, cheap heating solution: pipe lagging.

Pipe lagging is a type of insulation which can be purchased for as little as £5.10 for a roll, with prices increasing for larger quantities.

The useful video above explains how you might be able to apply this lagging to your pipes yourself, without the need to call out an expert.

Pipes in the loft, in garages or on the outside of the home are the most necessary to apply lagging to.

Pipes in an airing cupboard, or under sinks should also be fitted with lagging to avoid future damage.

Lengths should be cut at an angle in order to join up together at the joints of the pipes, ensuring there is no gap for cold air to get in.

Once fixed around the pipes, lagging can be fixed with tape to ensure it stays in place and does its job properly.

Pipe insulation has a number of benefits. For a start, it can prevent heat loss from pipes and therefore make your heating more efficient, reducing the cost you pay overall.

Furthermore, protecting your pipes with lagging could end up preventing your pipes from freezing and getting damaged – which would cost you a hefty sum to fix.

Lastly, a lesser known benefit of installing lagging around your pipes is for noise reduction from your central heating system.

Hot water can make a banging noise when it passes through a pipe, due to the temperature difference between the inner and outer tubes.

Is it cheaper to leave central heating on all the time or to turn it on and off? The matter is a popular debate.

As temperatures drop, many of us are considering the best way to keep our homes warm.

Boiler breakdown: How to look after your boiler in freezing weather and prevent problems https://briefnews.eu/boiler-breakdown-how-to-look-after-your-boiler-in-freezing-weather-and-prevent-problems/ https://briefnews.eu/boiler-breakdown-how-to-look-after-your-boiler-in-freezing-weather-and-prevent-problems/#respond Fri, 02 Mar 2018 12:07:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/boiler-breakdown-how-to-look-after-your-boiler-in-freezing-weather-and-prevent-problems/

Freezing cold weather across the UK has seen many keep their heating on far later in the year than they usually would.

But many will be hit by boiler breakdowns, and last year saw a 5.2 per cent increase in claims for faulty boilers compared to the winter before, according to research by Direct Line.

In fact the company has seen the volume of claims for faulty boilers consistently increase for the last five years.

So what can homeowners and landlords do to protect their boiler in cold weather?

Keep your heating on low

Sudden cold temperatures can freeze your boiler’s external condensate pipe, which could cause your boiler to stop working. Insulating the pipes can help, or try keeping the heating on constantly but low when it’s very cold.

Bleed your radiators

If your property isn’t getting as warm as you think it should be, there may be air trapped inside the heating system so you need to bleed your radiators.

Releasing air from the system is simple but you will need a key which can slot into the radiators bleed valve. If you still have a problem after doing this, you may need to call in the professionals.

Keep your boiler maintained

Make sure you service your boiler and keep it maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Check regularly for any warning signs such as leaks, cracks or noises as the sooner you can identify a problem, the easier it will be to fix.

Turn off services when property is unoccupied

If you do have an unoccupied property for longer than 30 days then it’s worth draining the water system and switching the utilities off. However, if it’s in the winter months then keeping your central heating system on at a minimum temperature can help prevent frozen pipes.

Christina Dimitrov, Business Manager at Direct Line for Business said: “Being caught cold with heating issues in the winter months can be particularly unpleasant, so it’s vital that landlords make sure their properties have fully serviced boilers to minimise the risk of heating system failures.

“Landlords are legally responsible for securing a safety certificate for gas appliances each year and they also need to ensure the heating and hot water systems are maintained and functioning properly.”

If your boiler is making a loud banging noise, there could be a reason why. According to 24/7 Home Rescue there are several noises you need to look out for which indicate there is a problem with your boiler.

If your boiler starts to leak water or makes a loud banging noise this could be a sign of a serious problem.

Boiler tips: Should you run ‘eco-mode’ on your boiler? Is it cheaper than normal settings? https://briefnews.eu/boiler-tips-should-you-run-eco-mode-on-your-boiler-is-it-cheaper-than-normal-settings/ https://briefnews.eu/boiler-tips-should-you-run-eco-mode-on-your-boiler-is-it-cheaper-than-normal-settings/#respond Thu, 01 Mar 2018 12:14:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/boiler-tips-should-you-run-eco-mode-on-your-boiler-is-it-cheaper-than-normal-settings/

As the cold weather hits the country, many are cranking up the heating temperature.

Boilers often come with an ‘eco-mode’ function on top of the normal setting.

What does it do? Should you switch your boiler to eco-mode? Is it cheaper to fun than the standard setting?

Boiler makers Worcester have explained what the special setting is and why you might use it.

What is eco-mode?

This function will switch off your preheat settings, which means it may take slightly longer for hot water to come through the tap.

If it is not selected, the preheat is on and there will be a “quicker response to a hot water demand”, say Worcester.

It can usually be switched on and off manually depending on your preference. Similarly, you may have your heating on all the time – but is it cheaper to switch the heating on and off?

Should you run the boiler in eco-mode?

This depends on a number of factors. Using the special mode means it will take about 10 seconds for water to run hot, although this varies from home to home.

If you are elderly or have children, that extra time may not be appreciated.

But if you are not in an at risk group, there may seem to be no justification for having your boiler constantly ready to go when it isn’t needed.

Is eco-mode cheaper than the standard setting?

As the name suggests, the eco-mode option uses less energy than a standard setting.

Therefore, it is cheaper, if only by a few pence – but every little helps if you are trying to save money.

If you are attempting to bring your energy bills down, installing a £39 item in your home could slash a third of your gas bill.

Boiler central heating: Installing THIS £39 item could save you a third on your gas bill https://briefnews.eu/boiler-central-heating-installing-this-39-item-could-save-you-a-third-on-your-gas-bill/ https://briefnews.eu/boiler-central-heating-installing-this-39-item-could-save-you-a-third-on-your-gas-bill/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2018 10:30:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/boiler-central-heating-installing-this-39-item-could-save-you-a-third-on-your-gas-bill/

Boiler costs and central heating bills can become expensive in wintertime, but save during this cold spell by installing a simple ceiling fan.

Installing one of these fans in your home can save you as much 30 per cent on your heating bill, according to research from Lights.co.uk.

Typically, ceiling fans are used for generating a cool breeze during the summer.

However, many do not realise they can equally be used to circulate warm air in your home during the winter.

As a result, you won’t have to crank up the thermostat – and you will save money on your heating bill.

All you have to do is use the ceiling fan in the reverse function (counter clockwise) rather than the forward function.

This pushes the warm air – which naturally rises towards the ceiling – back down into the room.

As a result, the heat from your central heating system will circulate around the room much more efficiently.

Ceilings fans can be found for as little as £39 on sites such as eBay, or for upwards of £50 on Lights.co.uk.

They are available in a range of different models and colours, and you can choose between options with or without integrated lights.

Given that the average UK annual gas bill is an eye watering £752, according to research from OVO Energy, this may well be a worthy investment.

Yesterday, it was revealed what temperature a house should be: 21 degrees Celsius, according to a government study.

Despite this, the average UK home is just 17.7 degrees Celsius, which is considerably colder.

It has also been asked whether it is cheaper to leave central heating on all the time or to turn it on and off.

Boiler central heating: What temperature should a house be? Should you turn yours up? https://briefnews.eu/boiler-central-heating-what-temperature-should-a-house-be-should-you-turn-yours-up/ https://briefnews.eu/boiler-central-heating-what-temperature-should-a-house-be-should-you-turn-yours-up/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 17:36:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/boiler-central-heating-what-temperature-should-a-house-be-should-you-turn-yours-up/

Your boiler will be working overtime during the winter chill, but what temperature should you set your central heating to when it’s cold?

The ideal temperature for your house is 21 degrees Celsius, according to a government study.

However, the average temperature of a UK home is set to be 17.7 degrees Celsius, which is considerably colder.

However, there is no hard and fast rule as to what temperature a house should be.

If you are ill or elderly, it is likely you may require a higher temperature compared to others.

Conversely, some people are happy to survive in temperatures much colder than this.

This can also be affected by gender: a Dutch study fpund that women work better in warmer rooms and offices compared to men, due to having less body heat.

It is known that for each degree you increase your thermostat, you will pay around £60 extra per year.

Should you turn your thermostat up in cold weather? It is believed half of us increase the temperature on our house if it is cold outside.

It is understandable why people might do this to try and keep warm, especially when temperatures drop to minus figures.

However, experts says this is a waste of money, because a thermostat is designed to keep the house at the same temperature all the time.

This is regardless of how freezing the outside weather might turn during the course of the day and night.

It was recently asked: is it cheaper to leave central heating on all the time or turn it on and off?

Some believe it is better to control your thermostat by turning it up and down during the day, or putting it on a timer.

Others are convinced leaving it on all the time will help them stay warm during the winter, while being the most energy saving and cost efficient solution.

Sadly for some, Caitlin Bent – an energy expert at the Energy Saving Trust (EST), isn’t buying the “keep it on” philosophy.

Protect your boiler this winter and save money on energy bills with these simple tips https://briefnews.eu/protect-your-boiler-this-winter-and-save-money-on-energy-bills-with-these-simple-tips/ https://briefnews.eu/protect-your-boiler-this-winter-and-save-money-on-energy-bills-with-these-simple-tips/#respond Sat, 23 Dec 2017 14:53:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/protect-your-boiler-this-winter-and-save-money-on-energy-bills-with-these-simple-tips/

British Gas have shared their top tips for preventing problems with boilers after they predicted more than 50,000 Britons will suffer a festive boiler breakdown.

More than 2000 households needed the help of a British Gas engineer on Christmas Day last year, and 4000 did on New Year’s Day.

Matthew Bateman, Director for Field Operations at British Gas, said: “For us, Christmas Day is also about helping our customers in particular those who have no heating or hot water and our vulnerable customers such as the elderly.

“That’s why our expert engineers will be on standby to help people who are facing real emergency situations.”

Bleed your radiators

If your radiators have cold spots at the top, this means you have air in the system, so you will need to bleed them to get them working efficiently.

It is relatively simply to do, just follow this step-by-step guide to bleeding radiators.

Bleeding your radiator may result in pressure dropping. If you have a pressure gauge make sure the boiler is at the right pressure and top up as necessary.

Block the breeze

Make sure all of your windows and doors seal properly to stop warm air escaping. For those that don’t, fitting draught excluders, which you can buy from most DIY stores, is a quick and cheap way to cut down on your energy bills.

Carbon Monoxide

It’s vital to have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted and that you test it regularly.

Boiler maintenance

Check to make sure that your boiler is working properly before winter sets in. The older your boiler, the more inefficient it will be.

Insulation

Wrap up your water tank. The materials can be purchased from most DIY stores and help to conserve heat and save you money.

Burst pipes are a huge issue during winter months. To help prevent burst pipes, ensure all pipes are properly insulated by using lagging, which can be bought cheaply from most DIY shops.

Drains

If you’re trying to keep your drains outside well maintained, it’s a good idea to make sure they are clear of debris at the point at which they enter the ground. This involves checking your gullies for autumnal leaves and twigs to ensure that they don’t restrict water flow at any point.

Boiler TRICK that could save you thousands on your central heating bill https://briefnews.eu/boiler-trick-that-could-save-you-thousands-on-your-central-heating-bill/ https://briefnews.eu/boiler-trick-that-could-save-you-thousands-on-your-central-heating-bill/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2017 18:16:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/boiler-trick-that-could-save-you-thousands-on-your-central-heating-bill/

A boiler can become inefficient over time, with dust mixing with heat condensation and obstructing pipes.

Steve Watson, Servicing & Maintenance Manager with UK boiler installation firm STL Heating & Energy, urged homeowners to be wary of leaving their boilers to get full of “sludge”.

He said: “Black sludge is the enemy of any central heating system. It consists of iron oxide filings – essentially metal rust from equipment like radiators, central heating pump housings and cast iron heat exchanges found inside the boiler.

“And what many homeowners don’t realise is that when the sludge builds up to sufficient levels it can set like concrete, causing catastrophic damage.

“Radiators become clogged, failing to warm up despite how hard your boiler is working, and boilers can also overheat and shut down.

“Depending on your replacement, you could be looking at a £3,000-plus bill for a new boiler – and much more for a whole system replacement.”

But there is a solution, Steve advised. He continued: “The frustrating part is that it can be remedied with a simple magnetic filter that bolts on to the central heating system and collects the iron oxide filings.

“It’s our view that every boiler – whether old or newly fitted – should have this filter fitted. You then simply clean the filter every year as part of an annual service.

“Yet it’s not something governed by industry guidelines and countless installers simply aren’t bothering to fit one.

“It’s our view that this needs to change…. Customers are getting a raw deal.”

Costing £80, the filter should be fitted by a professional – and a boiler should only be cleaned by a professional too.

There are other things homeowners can do to save money on their heating bills that don’t cost a penny.

Energy supplier Npower has revealed one trick both homeowners and renters can do to boost the temperature in their home.

They advised to “make the most of natural heat”, and said: “If you’ve got a conservatory or patio doors that catch the sun, keep the curtains open during the sunniest part of the day and let the warmth in.

“Don’t forget to shut them again once the sun goes down or you’ll be losing heat again fairly quickly.”

This was not their only money-saving tip, and they revealed programming the thermostat could save as much as £85 a year.

Is your boiler making a loud banging noise? Act NOW as arctic blast sets in this weekend https://briefnews.eu/is-your-boiler-making-a-loud-banging-noise-act-now-as-arctic-blast-sets-in-this-weekend/ https://briefnews.eu/is-your-boiler-making-a-loud-banging-noise-act-now-as-arctic-blast-sets-in-this-weekend/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2017 13:48:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-your-boiler-making-a-loud-banging-noise-act-now-as-arctic-blast-sets-in-this-weekend/

Snow is expected to fall across parts of the UK today after Storm Caroline blasted through the country this week.

With a yellow severe weather warning place, and freezing temperatures sure to follow in the coming weeks, now is the time to check your boiler is fully functioning.

If your boiler starts to leak water or makes a loud banging noise this could be a sign of a serious problem.

While your boiler might be working properly now with these issues, it is likely it could break down in the immediate future and could pose a serious safety risk to you and others.

Is your boiler making a noise?

According to 24/7 Home Rescue there are several noises you need to look out for which indicate there is a problem with your boiler.

Clunking and banging

According to the boiler, appliance and home emergency cover specialists, these are known as ’settling’ noises and are caused when limescale accumulates on the heat exchanger. This blocks the flow of water and causes some water to boil, steam and expand, as seen in a kettle.

This can reduce the efficiency of your boiler and cause damage in the long-term.

Whistling noises

These can also be caused by settling but could be due to trapped air within the system, loss of water pressure or a blockage.

Gurgling

Such noises can also be caused by air in the system, a blockage or sediment at the bottom of the boiler, but a frozen condensate pipe may also be to blame.

If a frozen pipe is the cause it will need to be thawed. This can be done yourself if you know how using hot water bottles and heat wraps – but only if the pipe is accessible at ground level.

If you experience any problems with your boiler is best to call an expert so you can rest assured that problems will be fixed by those with the necessary expertise.

Boiler breakdowns are not only inconvenient but pricey too, but there are a number of things homeowners can to do look after this boiler.

Preventing issues in advance can save hundreds of pounds, and Priory Gas Heating has a host of tips on what homeowners should be doing with their boilers as the temperature drops around the UK.

So what should homeowners do in the coming weeks to look after their boilers?

WARNING: Your central heating boiler could KILL you in your sleep if you see these signs https://briefnews.eu/warning-your-central-heating-boiler-could-kill-you-in-your-sleep-if-you-see-these-signs/ https://briefnews.eu/warning-your-central-heating-boiler-could-kill-you-in-your-sleep-if-you-see-these-signs/#respond Wed, 29 Nov 2017 09:58:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/warning-your-central-heating-boiler-could-kill-you-in-your-sleep-if-you-see-these-signs/

Your central heating boiler could kill you in your sleep if you ignore these vital signs – and under 16s and over 64s are more likely to die thanks to their boiler than any other age group.

Officially, around 40 people die, and around 300 injured, from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning each year in England and Wales.

However, the Carbon Monoxide and Gas Safety Society claim hundreds of carbon monoxide poisonings per year are being classified as “unexplained”.

Ignoring the threat could prove fatal – however, there are some clear signs that point to the threat of poisoning, and acting on them could save your life.

Carbon monoxide poisoning causes a lack of oxygen to the body, slowly causing cells and parts of the body to die – and faulty central heating boilers pose the biggest risk.

Signs your central heating boiler is dangerous

Steve Watson, Service and Maintenance Manager with respected firm STL Heating and Energy, is an expert in good boiler management and safety.

Combi boiler pilot light frequently blows out changes from blue to yellow

Steve said: “An early warning sign might be that the pilot light is always blowing out, because the gas isn’t fully burning. What’s more concerning, however, is a pilot light that goes from being a bright blue or bluish-green with a small yellow spot at the tip, to being yellow with a weak-looking flame. That indicates that there’s not enough oxygen to burn the fuel and suggests the presence of carbon monoxide.”

Black stains on or near your boiler

“If you see black stains near your boiler, perhaps on the ceiling above, then there could potentially be a leak coming from your flue. Leaking boiler emissions can include deadly carbon monoxide. Get it assessed immediately.”

A faint, strange smell

“Carbon monoxide is odourless. But if it’s being emitted because your boiler isn’t burning properly, you’ll often find that your boiler gives off a faint smell.”

Heavy condensation in the room where the boiler is installed

“It’s not carbon monoxide that causes the condensation, but misting up of the windows could be a signal that your boiler isn’t being vented properly, as water is one of the by-products of combustion.

“If exhaust gases aren’t leaving your house, they could be being released indoors. And that includes the potential for carbon monoxide to be unleashed.”

If you suspect any of these signs in your house, Steve said: “Get a Gas Safe engineer into your property to inspect the appliance and make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are functioning.”

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning

Symptoms of low level poisoning include headaches, dizziness, tiredness, breathlessness and nausea – similar to a virus or food poisoning but with no rise in body temperature.

Stephanie, who’s been lobbying for prime-time TV warnings about the dangers of CO since 1995, said: “We estimate that around 4 million people are potentially being exposed to low level carbon monoxide poisoning in England and Wales.

“There are around 3,500 people aged between 16 and 64 who die in the UK from ‘unexplained causes’ – and these people are not tested for CO poisoning. Why on earth not?

“And that data also excludes the people most likely to die from CO, which is those aged under 16 and over 64. They are probably more likely to die from CO simply because they spend more time at home.”

Worried your boiler might break down this winter? Houses in this part of the country are most likely to be hit.

You can save up to £340 this year by making sure your boiler is an effective as possible.
