The video captured a group of passengers waiting to board a flight. Waiting near the boarding desk, an older woman walked towards the airport tannoy phone. The person filming then said: “Such a chief,” as the woman, clad in a pink floral top, picked up the phone. What she did next shocked many online. The woman used the tannoy system to say: “All the Cleveland folks need assistance at D17 please.” Her calling was met with cheers and clapping, presumably as they were waiting for their flight. The woman, however, seemed nonplussed and not particularly happy. She walked off looking rather annoyed still, heading back to her seat. The video has had more than 255,000 views on the well-known Instagram account Passenger Shaming. Many Instagram users had something to say about the power move by the passenger. One person said: “Me when I get slightly less attention than I deserve.” Another remarked: “I could totally see my mom doing this.” One user had more questions: “What help did they need though?” Some people looked forward to doing it themselves in the future: “This encapsulates exactly why I look forward to my later years and not giving a f***.” The Instagram account Passenger Shaming is known for sharing funny or rude passengers. One woman was caught putting her bare feet on the tray table despite other people telling her to stop. She refused and blamed a ballet injury for doing it. Another passenger was caught shaving in his seat during the flight. He seemed obvious to how rude and unhygienic he was being. A boarding pass helps you know what time your flight departs, what seat you’re in, your boarding time, and other key travel information. However, there’s much more hiding on that piece of paper than you realise – and a security expert has revealed why you should be careful about who has access to it. GCHQ certified trainer Lisa Forte has revealed to technology media company DIGIT that the barcode on boarding passes hides a wealth of personal data. By scanning the barcode you can find your full name, date of birth, flight number, source and destination airport, seat number and a six-digit PNR (Passenger Name Record) locator code, also known as a booking reference number. It’s this PNR that contains a whole host of information about you and anyone you’re travelling with, when accessed through the booking section of the airline’s website. Details include: full name and date of birth, passport number and details, details of any car hire or hotel bookings made through the airline, email address and telephone number and last four digits of the payment card used and details of who paid for the ticket. The PNR will also show any SSR (Special Service Requests) such as meal requirements and the reason why, as well as any disabilities or medical issues you have declared. The rise of social media has made hackers’ lives much easier when it comes to stealing information. When people post photos of their boarding pass on Instagram, for instance, they might remember to hide their name but the barcode is frequently left clearly visible. A cyber attacker could scan the barcode to reveal the surname and PNR and booking reference number and then access all the above details stored in your passenger information section on the airline’s website. Hackers can’t actually pay for anything when they gain this data nor can they alter the booking but they can use it to swindle you. Forte writes: “Imagine you are an attacker. You know I have just flown from London Heathrow to Bangkok with British Airways for example. You know my return flight is in two weeks, I flew economy and that on the outbound flight I requested a vegetarian meal. “You start to craft a malicious phishing email to me pretending to be British Airways: ‘If you require a vegetarian meal for your return flight too please click this link to order it now” or “your return flight to London Heathrow has been overbooked. As an important customer we would like to upgrade you to business class please click the below link to accept the offer.’” Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce this happening to you. It’s inadvisable to post pictures of your boarding pass online and avoid identifying which airline you’re flying with online. This will hinder an attacker’s progress and they’d have to try each airline’s website to access your details. Remember to destroy your boarding pass securely. Don’t leave it on the plane or at the airport – take it back home with you, shred it and dispose of it. Forte’s final tip is to only give the airline the information marked as essential on the website when booking a flight; only fill in compulsory fields. Your boarding pass also has a role to play if you’re wanting to travel with medication as the prescription name must match the one on the boarding pass, it was recently revealed. For example, if the surname is different on the prescription compared to the ticket, this may prevent the medication from being brought on. The NHS website advises carrying medication in their “original, correctly labelled packages,” along with the letter.

Google is cleaning up its Google Pay mobile payments app this week. Google Pay (which was formerly Android Pay, which was formerly Google Wallet) is getting rolled up into a single app, and it’s getting boarding pass support.
First, you’ll finally be able to pay for things with NFC and send money to contacts through a single app. For a while now, Google’s mobile payments solutions have inexplicably been split across two apps. With the latest branding, there was a “Google Pay” app for NFC payments and a second “Google Pay Send” app for P2P money transfers. With the new update, Google says you’ll now be able to request and send money right from the main Google Pay app, and you’ll even be able to split the bill from a recent NFC purchase. For now this is limited to the US.
The second upgrade coming to Google Pay is the launch of boarding pass support, which has been a feature of Apple Wallet forever. Google announced boarding pass support at Google I/O 2018, and the feature has been in public testing for a few months, but now it appears to be entering wider availability. Google’s blog post says you’ll be able to save passes from Ticketmaster and Southwest with “more places soon, including Eventbrite, Singapore Airlines, and Vueling.” For now that appears to be the entire list.

Boarding passes are often used by passengers to simply board their plane before the paper tickets are discarded.
Some choose to look at the numbers and codes on the tickets with some hiding secret meanings.
Anyone with the code SSSS on their pass may find themselves getting additional checks, it was recently revealed.
That isn’t the only secret they hide, as they could also be hiding some amazing money saving hacks.
One frequent traveller explained how they had saved a lot of money in a very expensive city.
Conde Nast Traveller revealed how certain airlines offer discounted entry to a number of popular museums and exhibits abroad.
When visiting Singapore, they were asked if they had flown Singapore Airlines to which, upon producing a boarding pass, received “25 per cent knocked off [the] ticket price”.
It also includes a number of hotels, restaurant and shopping malls when it comes to discounts so it is worth checking out before purchasing something.
They aren’t the only airline to give back to their customers.
Turkish Airlines allow 15 per cent off the entrance fee when visiting Petra, whilst Alaska Airlines allows a full free day of skiing at 12 resorts.
Flying with Korean Air? Passengers can get free drinks and entrees at a number of restaurants.
Sadly British airlines have yet to offer passengers any additional discounts with their passes abroad.
British Airways offers discounts in the UK such as complimentary cocktails afternoon teas or discounts at British brands such as Hackett and DAKS.
Passengers should avoid throwing away their boarding pass even if it offers little discounts, due to the sensitive information on it.
If it is stolen, the details on it can be used to change flights and even use it to hack into accounts.
Making a mistake on a boarding pass can also come at a price, which one woman found out the hard way.
A WOW air passenger attempted to fly from Canada to Iceland when they realised they didn’t include their middle name.
Despite her first and last name being correct, she was banned from flying due to it not fully matching her passport details.
She wasn’t the only one to be caught out by the mistake; she was told that 11 other people fell afoul of the rules the day before and were not allowed to board.
The Canadian woman was forced to shell out a new ticket at double the cost to rectify the easy mistake.
Booking flights can be a stressful process when it comes to inputting bank details and checking the details are correct.
This is amplified when adding passport details such as numbers and names.
One young woman found out the hard way what happens when making an easy yet small mistake.
Ashley Collins was travelling from Ontario to Iceland with low-cost airline WOW air when the incident occurred.
She quickly found herself being banned from the flight.
The young woman didn’t put her middle name on the boarding pass which prevented her from flying.
She told CityNews: “She handed me my passport and said I was missing the middle name on the ticket so I was denied boarding the flight.”
Yet as there were less than four hours until the flight, she was unable to change the details on it.
Ms Collins was then forced to pay for a whole new flight, which cost the same as a return flight.
She explained: “We were really looking forward to this trip. We had no options at that point.”
The poor traveller was charged $ 23 (£16) to change her name for the return journey and warned passengers to always “put your middle name” on it even if doesn’t seem to require it.
Not all airlines appear to need it when booking.
Whilst it may seem like a silly mistake, she wasn’t the only person to fall victim to it.
The flight attendant reportedly said, “it’s another one” to her supervisor when she attempted to board.
Ms Collins was then told 11 other passengers were not allowed to fly the day before for the same reason.
Transport Canada spokesperson Marie-Anyk Côté told CityAM: “We encourage all passengers to use the names as they appear on the official identification they will use when travelling.
“This will minimize delays at check-in or at the boarding gate.”
Some airports and airlines are hoping to one-day scrap boarding passes altogether and use facial recognition technology instead.
WOWair has been contacted for comment regarding the incident.
US airline JetBlue and Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport are trailing the new technique.

British Airways reportedly banned a man named Nicholas from boarding a flight — simply because his boarding pass called him “Nick.”
53-year-old Nick Meads told Bristol Live that he and his wife, 49-year-old Charlotte, had bought tickets for a March 27 British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Denpasar in Bali, Indonesia, where they planned to celebrate their wedding anniversary.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

British Airways is expanding its biometric boarding gate tests in the US. Last November, it began testing self-service boarding gates in Los Angeles Airport that don’t require customers to produce either their boarding pass or their passport. Instead, passengers only need to look into a camera, wait for their biometric data to be checked against their passport, visa or immigration photos and then walk onto the plane once their identity has been verified. So far, the US tests have been limited to those flying out of LAX on British Airways flights to Heathrow. But now, the self-service gates are also being tested in Orlando International Airport with customers flying to Gatwick as well as in New York’s JFK airport and Miami International Airport with passengers flying in to the US from Heathrow.
Passengers still have to produce their boarding pass and passport when going through check-in and security, but the biometric boarding gates eliminate the need to use the documents when boarding. British Airways says that in Los Angeles, the gates have allowed 400 passengers to board in 22 minutes, which is less than half of the time it typically takes. The company says that the technology, produced by SITA, uses facial identification systems similar to those on smartphones.
British Airways is far from the only company developing biometric systems for airports. JetBlue is running a similar trial that allows passengers to self-board without travel documents on flights from Boston to Aruba. And last year, Delta began trying out facial recognition systems for checking luggage and using fingerprints instead of boarding passes. Dubai International Airport is working on a tunnel equipped with facial recognition cameras and iris scanners that would eliminate the need for travel documents and both Australia and the US are interested in wider applications of biometric systems in airports.
“Our latest trial with SITA in Orlando is helping us to reduce the time it takes to board our aircraft, and early indications are that using biometrics for arrivals has huge potential too,” Carolina Martinoli, British Airways’ director of brand and customer experience, said in a statement. “These trials will help us to evolve the technology and processes we use to best suits the needs of our customers.”

Boarding passes have many numbers and codes on them that can confuse passengers.
With flight details often hidden within them, it is advised that travellers shouldn’t post pictures of their boarding pass online in case they are used in scamming techniques.
Just the name and flight number can be used by nefarious online users to get into the fliers details.
A certain code on it has been revealed by Globe Hunters to explain something many may not realise when checking in.
Something called the sequence or written as SEQ can be found on the bottom of the boarding pass.
This informs passengers when they boarded compared to other people on their plane.
The website states: “This is the order in which you checked into your flight.
“So if your sequence number is 066 that means you were the 66th person to check in.”
Other bits of information that can be found on the boarding pass include the flight number, seat, boarding gate and destination.
A code that can also be found on a boarding pass is SSSS, but is not something passengers want to see on theirs.
It stands for “Secondary Security Screening Selection”, according to website Life Hacker.
This means that the holder of the ticket may need to have additional security checks when travelling through the airport after their name has been flagged up.
When booking a flight, it is also advised against using a middle name when buying a ticket.
This can cause more scope for error when inputting the name which can then be an expensive mistake to fix.
As long as the first and last name are included then this is still acceptable as long as it matches the passport holder’s name.
Name change fees can often be as steep as £60 each way.
