Time to dust off your infantries and cannons: A scripted TV series based on the classic board game Risk is in the works, with House of Cards creator Beau Willimon at the helm, our sister site Variety reports.

The project — which doesn’t have a network attached yet — is part of a multi-year deal between game maker Hasbro’s entertainment studio eOne and Willimon’s production company Westward. Willimon, who’s reportedly an “avid fan” of Risk, will write and oversee production of the series. (No plot or character details are available yet, though.)

“As we continue to build out eOne’s world-class content slate, we couldn’t think of more perfect partners than Beau and Jordan [Tappis], whose award-winning storytelling and imagination are among the best in the business,” eOne president of global television Michael Lombardo said in a statement.

Willimon is best known for creating the Emmy-winning political drama House of Cards, which ran for six seasons on Netflix. He also created the Sean Penn-starring astronaut drama The First for Hulu.

Risk, dubbed “The Game of Strategic Conquest,” debuted in 1957 and has remained a family favorite for decades. In the genre of board games-turned-TV shows, it joins a new live-action take on Dungeons and Dragons, which was first announced back in October.

Future Motion’s Onewheel electric boards have added power and range over the years, but accessibility? Not so much. They’ve still been expensive and intimidating, not to mention clunky to carry around. That’s where the just-unveiled Onewheel Pint might help. It’s not only more affordable (relatively speaking) at $ 950, it’s gentler on newcomers who’d otherwise worry about crashing out.

Most notably, a Simplestop dismount feature streamlines the riding experience so that you won’t fly off while you’re still learning the ropes. It’s smaller (27 inches long) and lighter than past models, helping both its agility and portability. Future Motion drives that last point home by including a fold-out magnetic handle on the side — you’re clearly meant to carry this around for those moments you need

The catch? Not surprisingly, the Pint isn’t a long-range cruiser. You’re looking at 6 to 8 miles of range and a 16MPH top speed. The company pitches this as a board for coffee shop trips and the last leg of a commute, rather than something you’d ride all the way to work and back. While that seems appropriate, it does put the Pint at a disadvantage to the Boosted Mini X, which costs slightly more but roughly doubles the range.

You won’t have to wait too long to get the new Onewheel, at least. Future Motion has started pre-orders ahead of a May release, and those who buy in the first 48 hours (no later than March 13th) can snag bonus fenders, custom etched rails and other perks at no extra cost. The Pint still isn’t a trivial purchase by any stretch. It might, however, be the model that helps the Onewheel line expand beyond a niche audience.

If you’re anything like us, Valentine’s Day brings to mind iconic images of candlelit dinners, boxes of chocolate, roses, and, of course, board games.

“What tabletop games are best for couples?” is a question we get all the time here at Ars Cardboard, and today we’re answering (again) by reprising our 2016 two-player guide with fresh new picks for 2019. Of course, you don’t have to be romantically linked to your gaming partner to enjoy these titles; our recommendations are perfect for any time your group is running behind and you only have one other person to push some cubes with. Or maybe you don’t have a group—all you need to play these games is one other willing (or kinda-sorta willing) partner.

The games below are new-player-friendly card and board games (sorry, we’re not tackling miniatures or wargames today) that can be played in an hour or less. While most board games accommodate two players—many quite well—we’ve found that the best two-player experiences are often those built from the ground up for duos. So we’re sticking with two-player-only games for this list (including one that has recently added support for other player counts).

PAX Unplugged, the tabletop board gaming conference that emerged from the PAX video game conference empire, took place in Philadelphia last week. It was bigger and better than last year’s inaugural event, with more space allocated to the exhibit floor and an amazing “first look” section of games, many of which are not yet out in North America.

It was impossible to play even a fraction of the new material available, but I did my best, spending three straight days at the con and playing plenty of “new hotness” along with a few older games (hello, Roll Player). Here, I want to run down a few of the most interesting that might appeal to the Ars crowd—even if not all held my attention equally in the end.

Facebook’s board of directors has defended COO Sheryl Sandberg’s decision to conduct opposition research into liberal billionaire George Soros. Facebook was under intense scrutiny for running a PR campaign against the magnate.

Sandberg admitted last week that she ordered staff to conduct research into Soros and his trading of Facebook stock, after he called the social media giant a “menace” to society during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January.

In a letter to Patrick Gaspard, president of Soros’ Open Society Foundations NGO, Facebook’s board defended Sandberg’s decision.

“To be clear, Ms. Sandberg’s question was entirely appropriate given her role as COO. When a well-known and outspoken investor attacks your company publicly, it is fair and appropriate to do this level of diligence,” read the letter, send on Wednesday.

Facebook’s Sandberg admits to snooping on Soros



This smear campaign involved Definers publishing anti-Soros content on NTKNetwork, a site owned by the company and described by one ex-employee as “our own in-house fake news shop.” Sandberg told NBC News that Facebook “absolutely did not pay anyone to create fake news,” and CEO Mark Zuckerberg denied any knowledge of his company’s work with Definers.

Eventually, outgoing Head of Communications, Elliot Schrage, took the fall for hiring the company, and while Sandberg admitted to conducting opposition research on Soros, she denied she had worked with Definers to investigate Soros’ link with anti-Facebook activists.

Facebook’s board stuck to that story on Wednesday, claiming in the letter that Sandberg knew nothing about Definers’ work with Facebook.

Since the New York Times’ report was published, Gaspard has called for independent, Congressional oversight of Facebook. He reiterated that call on Tuesday, stressing that “Facebook has a megaphone greater than that of sovereign states…there is too much at stake for you to continue to fail to lead.”

“These latest revelations add momentum tocalls for congressional review of monopolistic behavior,” he added.

Cruise ships carry a huge number of passengers and crew on board along with all their luggage and food.

Thanks to modern technology, storage, especially of food items, is now much easier.

But back in the 19th century, cruise companies had to be resourceful.

In 1840 Cunard’s RMS Britannia set forth on its maiden transatlantic voyage.

Such a journey in those days would have taken 15 days. However, passengers on this trip benefited from a special treat.

A dairy cow was brought on board the ship to provide everyone with fresh milk.

British writer Charles Dickens was on the Britannia and described the sight of “one party of men were ’taking in the milk,’” meaning they were bringing the animal on board.

The cow was kept slung across the deck in a hammock during the sea voyage.

Sadly, the beast never saw dry land again after it boarded the Britannia.

It went on to be killed on the ship, with everyone sitting down to a steak dinner courtesy of the animal.

A Cunard spokeswoman confirmed this was the case. “In 1840 a cow did travel on board to supply milk,” she told Express.co.uk.

“It was slaughtered on the last day of the voyage when everyone enjoyed a steak dinner.”

These days, bringing a cow on board is not necessary, but over 68,000 pints of milk are stocked for a two-week cruise.

Life on board a cruise ship is synonymous with glamour nowadays – but this wasn’t always the case.

Dickens’ voyage on the Britannia in 1842 was blighted by bad weather.

“I am awakened out of my sleep by a dismal shriek from my wife… I rouse myself and look out of bed,“ he wrote.

“All the smaller articles are afloat, expect my shoes, which are stranded on a carpet bag, high and dry, like a couple of coal barges.”

He later added: “Several berths are full of water and all the cabins are leaky.”

A cow might have been a bizarre thing to bring on board a ship, but at least it wasn’t unlucky.

Some items are considered very unlucky to being aboard – bananas in particular.
