James Wan is no stranger to movies about creepy dolls. He’s been involved with plenty of movies about them, from the tricycle-riding one in Saw (“do you want to play a game?”) to Dead Silence to the one from Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation. But Wan can’t get enough, because he’s reuniting with Jason Blum for yet another movie about an eerie killer doll. The duo will produce M3GAN, a “horror thriller” that has an up-and-coming director attached to it.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Wan and Blum, who have previously partnered on the Insidious franchise, are reuniting to produce M3GAN, which hails from writer Akela Cooper, best known for her work as a writer-producer of Luke Cage, American Horror Story, The 100, and Grimm. Gerard Johnstone, who wrote, edited, and directed the 2014 New Zealand horror comedy Housebound, is attached to direct M3GAN. Here’s the trailer for Housebound, which counts /Film’s managing editor Jacob Hall among its many fans:

M3GAN tells the story of “a brilliant toy company roboticist who uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to emotionally bond with her newly orphaned niece. But when the doll’s programming works too well, she becomes overprotective of her new friend…with terrifying results.”

That’s the boilerplate synopsis, but Wan explained what the story is really about: “Pretty much the concept is about embracing technology too much and relying too much on it. And what happens with technology runs amok. It’s a commentary on the world we live in and it feels relevant.”

The notion of technology running amok is obviously nothing new, but I’d like to think that the combination of talent involved here will result in something that connects with audiences on a deeper level. Cooper is a solid writer, and even the trailer for Housebound shows that Johnstone clearly has a handle on how to mix horror and comedy – a task that’s practically a requirement for any project featuring a killer doll. Hopefully Wan and Blum can light the path and lend their considerable experience to Johnstone and the team, because the idea of a doll who’s out to bond with a human instead of outright destroy them may provide an interesting opportunity for technological commentary beyond the typical Skynet-style observations that have flooded multiplexes in the decades since James Cameron’s The Terminator became a massive hit.

Jason Blum has seen a cut of the new Halloween reboot, and proclaimed it a success. Blum isn’t exactly an impartial witness here, since he’s producing the film, but we’ll take any Halloween info we can get at this point.

I would like to see David Gordon Green‘s Halloween reboot/sequel right now, please and thank you. Or at the very least, some footage. I’m sure we’ll get a trailer soon, but for now, we’ll have to live vicariously through Jason Blum. Blum, who runs Blumhouse and is one of the producers of the upcoming film, just watched a first cut, and he had nothing but nice things to say. Speaking with Digital Spy, Blum praised the way Green’s film remained true to the spirit of the Halloween franchise:

“I feel really good about it, I saw a cut of it two nights ago. I think David did a terrific job…He did everything I hoped he would do which is respect the DNA of the franchise and bring something totally new to it and we’re really very very excited for people to see it.”

The new Halloween comes from Green and co-writer Danny McBride, and serves as a direct sequel to the first film directed by John Carpenter. Carpenter served as executive producer on the new film, and offered some guidance, making this the first Halloween sequel he was directly involved in since Halloween III: Season of the Witch. “Thirty-eight years after the original Halloween, I’m going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all,” Carpenter said.

Original Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis returns for the film, and the rest of the cast includes Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, and Will Patton. Nick Castle, the stuntman who played Michael Myers in the first film, is also back, reprising the Myers role for a few scenes.

Blum’s comment about the new film respecting the “DNA of the franchise” mirrors what Danny McBride said in the past. While this film mostly ignores the Halloween sequels, McBride did say the script pays tribute to the other films in some capacity. “We do [reference the other movies],” McBride said. “For fans, we pay homage and respect to every Halloween that has been out there.” Does this mean the Cult of Thorn will be referenced, McBride? Fans want to know!

As for what else we can expect from the film, McBride had this to offer:

“I think we’re just trying to strip it down and just take it back to what was so good about the original. It was just very simple and just achieved that level of horror that wasn’t corny. And it wasn’t turning Michael Myers into some supernatural being that couldn’t be killed— that stuff to me isn’t scary. I want to be scared by something that I really think could happen. I think it’s much more horrifying to be scared by someone standing in the shadows while you’re taking the trash out as opposed to someone who can’t be killed pursuing you.”

Halloween opens October 19, 2018.

We’re getting closer to the long-rumored Spawn reboot. It’s been 20 years since the first terrible Spawn film adaptation, and ever since its release, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has been teasing a new, better Spawn film. Now Blumhouse is making that idea a reality, and McFarlane himself is directing. The comic book artist has never helmed a film before, so his hiring on this project might raise an eyebrow or two. But Blumhouse head honcho Jason Blum isn’t concerned. In a recent interview, Blum justified putting the untested McFarlane into the director’s chair. Read on for Blum’s thoughts regarding the Spawn reboot director.

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn was one of the prototypical 1990s comic book characters – a brooding, violent anti-hero fond of chains and misery, wrapped in a big, bright cape. The character branched out into other media, including a popular toy line and a supremely dark HBO animated series. And then there was the 1997 film adaptation, featuring Michael Jai White, John Leguizamo and some of the worst CGI you’ll ever see on the screen. While the film had plenty of violence and depictions of cartoonish demons, it wasn’t the hard R that creator Todd McFarlane always hoped for.

Now McFarlane will have the chance to make exactly the Spawn movie of his dreams, thanks to horror super producers Blumhouse, who have hired the comic book creator to direct the new film adaptation. Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum has high expectations for the new Spawn film, saying back in July, “[McFarlane is] going to join the ranks of Jordan Peele with Get Out, M. Night [Shyamalan] and The Visit and Split with us. And I think Todd is going to fit great into the Blumhouse mold, and we’re going to open up a lane for him to do his thing.”

Speaking with Coming Soon recently, Blum elaborated more on why he thinks McFarlane is the right person to helm the new Spawn movie:

“I think he’s gonna do a great job. Being a director encompasses a lot of different skills, but one of the most important skills is you have to be a great manager. You’re kind of a General of this army that you have to lead into battle every day, and he does that in his life every day running McFarlane Enterprises. So I think that translates to directing in a lot of ways. We’ve had a great back-and-forth around developing the script. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think he could do a great job, but we’ll see. I have a good feeling about it.”

There has been no casting for Spawn yet, but in the past McFarlane expressed interest in hiring Leonardo DiCaprio for a role. I have a feeling that won’t be happening, but, stranger casting announcements have been made. The Spawn reboot is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2018.
