So, still, does a real chance of capturing a Champions League slot against all the odds.

Victory thanks to an early goal from Cesc Fabregas moved them within two points of Spurs in fourth place and also within range of Liverpool above that.

It was a battle all the way against Swansea, whose own hunger for the contest was plain to see as well. Defeat for the home side, though, leaves them just a point above the drop zone.

They face a nerve-wracking finale to the campaign – and their home match in nine days time against Southampton, one point and one place behind in the table, now appears to be the crunch relegation match of this Premier League season.

That will surely be another muck-and-nettles occasion.

Chelsea were certainly thankful here to have the comfort of an early goal in the fourth minute to sustain them through the hurly-burly of a game that was mostly a relentless scrap for midfield possession.

It came when Swansea’s experienced schemer Andy King carelessly gave away the ball on the halfway line. Eden Hazard pounced with ruthless brilliance to put Fabregas clear in the penalty box.

The goal was scored almost in slow motion as Fabregas had oceans of space to curl a left-footed shot into the corner of the net. It was as easy as shelling peas for the Spaniard to claim his 50th strike in the Premier League.

Hazard was in the mood for magic, and that always spells danger for any opponent as he skips past players with a bewitching shimmy as if the ball is tied to his feet.

There were clever passes in abundance, too as Swansea battled to stay in the game.

Ironically, the closest Chelsea came to a second goal before the break was when home defender Alfie Mawson’s clearance looped onto his own bar.

The home side worked with endless spirit and energy – but the moment of quality or inspiration required to unlock the Chelsea defence proved elusive as rain lashed down on the Liberty Stadium.

There wasn’t a single shot to trouble Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois in the first half.

Neither side was being helped by the condition of the pitch. It appeared to have been heavily watered before kick-off and the downpour made it worse, players slipping over and passes sending up spray.

It was little wonder there was barely any action in either penalty area, never mind an actual attempt on goal.

Chelsea’s fans sang ‘Antonio, Antonio’ for a while in praise of their manager – a boss who seems very likely to be departing when the supporters would be happy for him to stay.

It’s not like that at every football club.

Conte patrolled the touchline in a relatively subdued mood that mirrored the nature of the football.

The first shot on target in the second half only came in the 70th minute, a run through the Swansea team by Chelsea wing back Emerson that was comfortably saved.

Moments later a touch from Victor Moses squirmed past the post after some silky brilliance from Hazard.

Swansea, finally, were stirred into serious action, helped by the introduction of the creative quality of Tom Carroll.

Andre Ayew curled one shot just wide in the 77th minute, and Carroll drilled another effort inches past the post with Courtois beaten.

Substitute Wayne Routledge also shot straight at the keeper.

It wasn’t enough, though, for a team scrapping against the drop – and defeat leaves them perilously placed.

The runaway champions of last season are already nine points adrift of Manchester City and the 3-0 embarrassment against Roma was their third defeat in seven games.

Heading into tomorrow’s showdown with Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United, parallels are already being drawn with the capitulation that led to the sacking two seasons ago of the Special One six months after winning the title.

And Fabregas, one of the main targets for the fans’ frustration, is still at pains to work out what went wrong that time.

“I still wonder myself because it was such a shame,” he said. “You go to bed sometimes and you think of many things and sometimes you cannot sleep.

“Still sometimes it bothers me because I could look from the outside as a fan and think, ‘These guys are not even trying’. But we just forgot to play football.

“You felt that those six months we were nowhere close to what we really were just a few months before. But it happened and I felt bad for it.”

Fingers have been pointed this time round at the harsh training regime implemented by Antonio Conte, and while Fabregas used his interview on BBC’s Premier League Show to refute that point blank, he did admit the “Italian” fixation with fitness is draining with a congested fixture schedule.

“When you have the whole week to train, his methods and those of the fitness coach have a [certain] mentality,” Fabregas said. “It is a very Italian mentality – we have to run and be fit and recover well.

“But this year, because of the Champions League, we are not having that much time because every three days you are playing.

“You cannot play on the Wednesday and the Saturday and then the Thursday. You cannot run – it’s impossible. You need to recover and get back well for the weekend.”

Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge is hardly likely to soothe tensions around the current regime, especially as Fabregas freely admits his best times as a player came under the Portuguese.

“With Mourinho I had an incredible year in my first season – it was one of the best seasons of my career,” he said.

“We still talk today. He is probably the manager that I have had the best feeling and connection for. Apart from Arsene Wenger, the one I have the most contact with is Jose.”

St. Louis Blues forward Zach Sanford will undergo surgery and miss five to six months of action after dislocating his left shoulder during training camp.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong announced the injury on Tuesday. He also said defenceman Jay Bouwmeester has a left ankle fracture and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

The 22-year-old Sanford joined St. Louis in February after a trade with Washington. The forward had two goals and three assists in 13 regular season appearances for the Blues, and he also played in four playoff games.

Bouwmeester, who is 33, is entering his sixth season for St. Louis and had 14 assists and a goal last season.

The Blues open their season at Pittsburgh on Oct. 4.

It was six years ago this month that the St. Louis Blues acquired Kevin Shattenkirk from the Colorado Avalanche.

Now, Shattenkirk’s future in St. Louis is in question. The 28-year-old from New Rochelle, N.Y., is likely to draw the most buzz ahead of the March 1 trade deadline, a right-shooting defenceman on an expiring contract who offers almost unrivalled production from the back end.

“His offensive skills are top-notch,” teammate and frequent defensive partner Carl Gunnarsson said of Shattenkirk, who’s on pace for a career-best 16 goals and 57 points.

“He always seems like he’s finding the open guy and he’s always getting to the open spots,” added Colton Parayko, another member of the Blues defence. “He’s got a good shot, he’s a good passer, he’s got vision — pretty much everything you look for in an offensive defenceman.”

In fact, heading into Monday’s play, Shattenkirk was tied for 10th among all NHL defencemen with 238 points since the start of the 2011-12 season, 10th with 181 assists and 11th with 57 goals.

Potent on power play

It’s on the power play where he’s most potent though, making him especially attractive to potential suitors ahead of the deadline. Shattenkirk boasts 122 power-play points over the last five-plus seasons, second only to Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson among NHL defenders. His 31 power-play goals in that same stretch trail only Shea Weber and Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Prior to Monday, he was tied for first at the position with 18 power-play points this season and second with seven power-play goals.

“It’s something I wish I could do, but there’s only a few guys in the league that have that kind of ability,” Gunnarsson said of Shattenkirk’s power-play prowess.

However appealing he may be as a trade chip before the deadline — just over two weeks away — the Blues might be better served keeping Shattenkirk themselves. For all their struggles this season (though not of late), St. Louis is still a viable threat to compete for the Stanley Cup after reaching the Western Conference final last year.

Shattenkirk garners only the fourth-most minutes on their defence (about 20 minutes per-game), but the club has no comparable threat for the offence he provides.

Perhaps to some alarm for the Montreal Canadiens, Carey Price continues to trend downward this season.

Save percentage by month for the 29-year-old:

Price is tied for ninth among NHL goaltenders with a .917 save percentage (min. 30 starts) and third with a .934 clip at even-strength. He’s struggled most with his team short-handed, yielding a league-leading 32 power-play goals against.

The Sullivan Bump

Pittsburgh went 33-16-5 with a plus-41 goal differential after replacing head coach Mike Johnston with Mike Sullivan in mid-December last season, eventually capturing their fourth Stanley Cup the following spring. Teams opting to dismiss a coach mid-season can only hope for such a bump. Results have been positive for clubs making a move so far this season:

The much-maligned Stars goalie tandem of Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen has been shockingly effective at five-on-five, Dallas sitting seventh overall with a .929 save percentage. It’s dreadful netminding on the league’s worst penalty kill that’s really doomed the Stars, the club sitting last by a wide margin with an ugly .819 save percentage.

Down year?

Corey Perry finally had his first multi-goal game of the season last week, scoring his 10th and 11th goals of the year in a win over Buffalo. The 31-year-old, who trails only Alex Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos with 311 goals since the 2007-08 season, is headed for his slimmest goal output since becoming a full-time NHL player.

Perry is on pace for a mere 16 goals or less than half of last year’s total (34).

The Peterborough, Ont., native appears to be suffering from some undue misfortune, currently shooting just 7.1 per cent — which would be a career low — on about the same number of shots per-game (2.7) as last year.

Prior to Monday’s games, Perry’s 11 goals were tied with Arizona’s Radim Vrbata and Edmonton’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for the fewest among forwards with at least 150 shots this season.

10 with 10

Prior to Monday, only two teams had at least 10 players with 10 goals or more already this season: the Washington Capitals and Minnesota Wild.
