Both Google and Meta have taken steps to start paying US publishers for aggregating their news content, but neither tech giant has yet found a perfect solution that would fairly compensate publishers and potentially help combat the mass shuttering of newsrooms across America. The Wall Street Journal reported that Facebook stopped its program paying US publishers in July, and more recently, media outlets haven’t been thrilled by terms of Google’s “News Showcase” program, either, and were mostly resisting partnership.

In the latter case, WSJ reported that some media outlets were holding out on joining the News Showcase for a very specific reason. They were waiting to see what happened with a new bill—the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act—which seemed like a better deal. If passed, the JCPA would force Google and Meta to pay US news publishers collectively bargaining for fair payment. However, now, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has introduced a new amendment to the JCPA which, the Chicago Tribune reports, was narrowly approved this week. And Cruz’s new stipulation may have effectively killed the previously bipartisan bill by diminishing Democratic support, thus crushing US publishers’ supposed dream deal.

What Cruz has suggested is an amendment to prohibit tech companies and news organizations from using the collective bargaining tool to collude on efforts to censor content. While the bill itself waives an antitrust agreement so that news organizations can collectively bargain with tech companies, Cruz says that this key antitrust exemption would not apply if during the negotiation process anyone “engages in any discussion of content moderation.”

Eugenie Bouchard, 24, is playing this year at Wimbledon, after a gruelling set of qualifying matches. 

The tennis babe, who hails from Montreal, let her tennis game slip a little over the past few months, but she is back in full force for Wimbledon 2018.

One thing that hasn’t slipped is her Instagram presence, with Eugenie racking up an impressive 1.7 million followers.

She regularly posts sexy bikini shots and antics from around the world, keeping her fan base up to date with her goings on.

Taking to her Instagram account she posted a grinning shot of herself from the “coolest place in the world.”

The post came before Eugenie was snapped on the practice grounds of the tennis club, where she blew a kiss with two fingers to photographers.

Sitting on the grass courts at Wimbledon, Eugenie can’t control her excitement.

The stunning blonde was snapped grinning as she looked into the distance, sitting on one of the legendary tennis courts.

In the snap the 24-year-old clung hugged on to her tennis racket.

She wore a white T-shirt with a blue logo detail peaking out and a pair of white shorts, showing off her tanned legs.

On her feet she wore a simple pair of white trainers.

She finished her natural, sporty look with her blonde hair tied back in a french plait.

The post was simply captioned: “Hi coolest place in the world”.

May of Eugenie’s adoring Instagram fans were quick to congratulate the model and tennis player on her achievement.

One wrote: “Hi Genie, I’m Wimbledon spirit, nice to meet you. I know you were in one of my finals and I hope you can be in others and win my trophy finally [sic]”.

Another commented: “Wish you a good match and please win win win love greatings”.

Last week Eugenie posted another happy photo to her Instagram account, this time of her making a love heart with her hands. 

Looking coyly at the camera in the snap, Eugenie captioned the post “love you guys”, with a heart emoticon.

Her post showed Eugenie was clearly feeling happy, and possibly even feeling loved up.

Showing off her toned legs, Eugenie wore a tight black leather mini skirt in the candid snap.

There was no final moment of Olympic glory for Lindsey Vonn as she blew a good shot at winning a gold medal in the ladies’ alpine combined when she clipped a gate and did not finish the slalom portion of the event.

Vonn entered the second run in first place, with more than a 0.7-second lead over Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway and Michelle Gisin of Switzerland. Fellow American Mikaela Shiffrin was in sixth place after the downhill portion with a good shot at making up ground in the slalom, her specialty.

The outspoken presenter was discussing a recent story which hit the news when things got tense. 

A school in Hampshire has faced backlash after it has allowed students to rear four pigs to send to slaughter. 

Piers Morgan and co-host Susanna Reid, 47, invited the headmaster of the school, Chris Willsher, on to the show to debate the issue with vegan, Vincent Cook. 

The school received death threats after a petition went awry to stop the school from continuing with their programme. 

Vincent appeared to have a problem with how the school teaches about the meat industry. 

He argued: “What the school is doing is actually selling them a lie. 97 per cent of pork isn’t from happy pigs being cared for by children.

“That sends an unspoken endorsement to the meat industry that it’s okay. I would love to show the whole truth – the kids that raise the pigs don’t know anything about the slaughter process.”

 However, it seemed that Piers had a major problem with Vincent’s argument and set about catching him out. 

Vincent asked why the public has to eat meat and Piers snapped: “Do you understand what happens in jungles? Do you understand that?

“Why should vegans have this tyrannically thing where they can issue death threats?”

Vincent clarified: “No one should ever phone up and speak in this way. Unfortunately there are trolls out in all groups – I would disassociate myself from anyone who does that.”

Piers noted that his guest’s children are vegan but set about finding out whether he lives a full life without any meat products. 

The 52-year-old ITV host quizzed Vincent on where his shoes are from, but it seemed that he was one step ahead of him by explaining that he wears vegan Doc Martens.

“Do your kids wear leather shoes?” Piers demanded to know. 

Vincent that he was sure they did, to which Piers erupted: “So actually you’re a hypocrite. 

“How do you think leather is made? Animals are taken and murdered – your words not mine – so you’re a hypocrite.

“De-leather your home otherwise you’re killing animals. You’re party to mass murder.”

At that, Susanna called time on the interview and the show went to a much-needed advert break.

Contestant Robert Archer was brought in to the interrogation room during this evening’s episode of SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Anthony and Ollie Ollerton sat Robert down, took the hood off of his head, and asked him to tell them about himself. 

Robert sincerely detailed his battle with drugs, and his assault charge which stopped him from getting into the army – which is what he always wanted to do. 

After leaving the interrogation, Ollie commented: “I like him, but I think he’s weak.”

Later, Anthony and Ollie track down Robert’s CV, and start looking through it.

Much to their surprise, they discovered that on his CV Robert claims to have spent three years in the parachute regiment, in the British military. 

Confused, the two hard men brought Robert into the interrogation room for a second time in the dead of night. 

Narrating the scenes, Anthony commented: “They need to be open with us otherwise there’s going to be no trust there, no loyalty there. 

“People who pretend to be in the military when they haven’t earned it. It makes people f**king angry.”

Back in the room, Robert sat in front of the two ex-military men.

“Talk to me about the parachute regiment,” began Anthony. “It obviously had a big part of your life.”

“Your CV’s quite impressive, I like that,” he continued, looking for the truth. 

Ollie chimed in, asking: “Welcome to the brotherhood. We’re brothers, you know that? 

“What battalion were you in?”

Realising his story had been seen through, Robert came clean: “If I’m honest, staff, it’s a bit of a… it’s a lie staff.”

At once, both men screamed at Robert, with Anthony getting in his face, shouting: “You f**king lying little c**t.” 

“Have you heard of stolen valour?” Ollie interrogated. 

Robert came clean, and revealed that he had joined the force at 17 and quit 12 weeks later, disgraced. 

Both Anthony and Ollie continued to berate him over his deplorable act. 

Later on in the episode, Robert handed in his number, quitting the show.

Fans on Twitter reacted instantly, saying: “I’d be crying with @antmiddleton screaming in my face #SASWhoDaresWins”

With another backing up Anthony’s actions: “I’m not surprised Ant reacted the way he did..how else do you expect someone to react when you’ve just lied #SASWhoDaresWins.”

Other fans felt sorry for Robert after he left: “Wow. Im partly horrified by what was just revealed on #SASWhoDaresWins but partly sad that the guy felt the need to lie. Torn.”

SAS: Who Dares Wins continues Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4.

Billionaire football club owner Mike Ashley started a war of words with powerful Middle Eastern financier Amanda Staveley when he stated that Staveley was a time waster. Now, Staveley wants to put the record straight.

Ashley, owner of Premier League team Newcastle United, put the club up for sale over three months ago.

Staveley’s firm PCP Capital Partners made three official bids for Newcastle but quotes that are “reflective of Ashley’s views” indicated that Staveley’s efforts “proved to be exhausting, frustrating, and a complete waste of time,” according to Reuters.

Staveley made an opening offer of £300 million on November 2. This included £200 million that was payable on completion with two further annual installments of £50 million dependent on Premier League survival and HMRC compliance.

Since then a non-disclosure agreement has been in place. However, Staveley broke that agreement in The Times in order to publicise her account of the difficulties that have arisen since dealing with Ashley.

“I’m very concerned, very surprised, and I’m disappointed about what’s been said this week,” Staveley said. “The suggestion that we were either wasting time or not serious is absurd. It’s hurtful. Hugely hurtful.”

Ashley rejected Staveley’s opening offer of £300 million, so an improved bid of £350 million was made on November 10. This offer included £150 million payable on completion and three annual installments of £50 million from 2020 to 2022. A further £50 million would be paid if the team qualified for the lucrative UEFA Champions League competition during that time, but there would be penalty clauses should the team suffer relegation from the Premier League and/or HMRC fines.

Again, Ashley rejected this bid so Staveley returned to the negotiating table with a third restructured offer of £250 million up front. Take it or leave it.

Ashley left it.

“I’m very much still interested in buying Newcastle and our bid remains on the table,” Staveley said of the £250 million offer this week.

As Staveley’s net worth is £110 million ($ 150 million) it is clear she cannot fund the purchase herself, even though she is including “a lot” of her own capital.

To help finance the purchase she has help from billionaire property tycoons the Reuben family, as well as global investors and “sovereign wealth funds.”

Staveley’s last offer fell considerably short of Ashley’s £350 million valuation. However, it included an up-front figure, would see current manager Rafael Benitez retain his role at the club, and would also see a significant investment made in playing assets and in fixed assets.

“Rafa is doing an incredible job,” Staveley said. “We want Rafa to be part of this project.”

She would pay Ashley £250 million, then invest £200 million over two transfer markets, and make significant improvements in the club’s training facilities for a total outlay in excess of £450 million.

It is this, perhaps, that has attracted Newcastle’s fanbase to her cause.

“That passion of the fans is vitally important when you’re looking at a club, because you know that you’re a custodian,” she said.

Staveley has only officially met Ashley once and found him to be “engaging and interesting.”

She remains hopeful that she can engage Ashley once more.

When asked if a deal can be struck, she said: “I don’t know… I hope so.”

Twitter users have pointed out the irony of Donald Trump lamenting immigration from “s***hole countries” while wishing that the US had “more people from places like Norway”: Why would Norwegians immigrate to the United States?

The US President reportedly expressed his displeasure with the influx of immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and some African countries during a meeting with high-ranking senators at the White House on Thursday, adding that he wished more people from Scandinavia would leave their homeland to pursue the fabled American Dream.

However, Twitter users were highly suspicious of Trump’s line of reasoning.

“Why would people from Norway want to immigrate here? They have actual health care, and longer life expectancy,” Stephen King‏ wrote on Twitter. Plenty of “blue checkmarks” appeared to share the author’s sentiments, pointing out that Norwegians enjoy free healthcare and education, and were even declared the happiest people on earth in 2017.

However, Trump’s comment did provide an excellent opportunity for people to brush up on their Norwegian vocabulary.

The pair came to heads earlier today after discussing the the Labour Lord’s opinion on Brexit. 

The 54-year-old is campaigning for a second referendum in which the public is allowed to decide on whether they leave the European Union once the terms and conditions are made clear. 

But it was Morgan, 52, who appeared on top form earlier today as he grilled Adonis on how he could possibly hope for a second referendum despite claiming he is a democrat. 

The Good Morning Britain presenter raged: “You lost! You can’t have a referendum and then have another one because you lost! How do you do this in democratic way without losing democracy?”

Adonis tried to explain that the people didn’t vote for an instant result, insisting that they chose to “open the discussion” before deciding whether to go ahead with Brexit. 

It was this point that particularly caught Morgan’s attention which caused him to completely erupt: “That’s not why the people voted.

“People were given a very simple premise and this country voted to leave – it wasn’t about starting negotiations. 

“Are you an enemy of the democracy?” he swiped. 

Morgan, barely letting Adonis get a word in edgeways, continued: “You’re just a bad loser. You didn’t like the result – I’m an Arsenal fan and I feel terrible and I would like them to replay but that’s not how it works.” 

Adonis fought back: “Millions of jobs depend on the outcome of Brexit and I think the people should have the choice to decide.

“The next referendum will be on the deal itself. The only reason they had to vote in this referendum is because David Cameron forced them to.

“That’s why I’m advocating day in and day out for the people to read the terms,” Adonis explained.
