A district on India’s western coast has become an oenophile destination in just two decades—but you’ve probably never heard of it. Joanna Lobo samples the bouquet.

In Hindu mythology, the war between the gods and demons over a pot of amrit—the nectar of immortality—resulted in a few drops of it falling to Earth. These four sites are now deemed holy, and host a Kumbh Mela—a pilgrimage of faith and spirituality—every 12 years.

One of these sites is Nashik, a district on the banks of the Godavari River in Maharashtra on India’s western coast. But today, Nashik is famous for another drink: Wine.

In the last two decades, about 30 wineries have sprung up in the region. Many of them are top players—Sula Vineyards, York Winery, Reveilo Wines, Grover Zampa and Vallonné, to name a few. They’re producing French and Italian varietals, among others, and offer all the winery mod-cons—tasting rooms, tours, restaurants, accommodation and more.

According to Indian wine writer Bhisham Mansukhani, Nashik is the only accessible wine tourism destination in India. “It’s ideal for those who want to go to the source of production of Indian wines and gain a holistic understanding of them,” he says. “It’s the most representative of the country’s wine regions and, from a tourist point of view, the roads have improved and a fair amount of tourism infrastructure has developed.”

RELATED: Is this America’s new wine frontier?

Nashik, today, is the epicenter of India’s wine production. The country has 95 wineries, of which 77 are in Maharashtra, and 39 in the Nashik district alone. Originally known for growing sugarcane and table grapes, it was in 1987 that an entrepreneur named Madhavrao More established a winery in Pimpalgaon, near Nashik. The Pimpane Co-operative Ltd., as it was known, produced chardonnay and pinot noir but, due to harvesting problems, shut down in 2003.

In 1994, mid-way through Pimpane’s reign, Stanford graduate Rajeev Samant visited his family’s 30-acre land in Nashik and found a barren space with no electricity, houses or roads. In an attempt to make use of the land, Samant initially experimented with mangoes and roses, but soon realized that the climate was better suited to growing wine grapes. He returned to California to study winemaking and met master winemaker, Kerry Damskey. A partnership was formed and in 1999, Sula Vineyards—named after Samant’s mother, Sulabha—was born.

Sula now owns 1,800 acres in Nashik and nearby Dindori in both owned and contract vineyards. They added a cellar door in 2005 to introduce people to their wines, and accommodation and restaurants to encourage people to stay.

Since 2008, the winery has hosted SulaFest, a music festival in February that coincides with harvest season, giving people the chance to enjoy a weekend of music, grape-stomping sessions and—of course—wine.

Today, Sula is the most recognized Indian wine brand, exported to 18 countries and occupying 65 per cent of the domestic wine market. The vineyard is also one of the stops on the luxury train, the Deccan Odyssey.

In the hill station of Igatpuri, you’ll find a winery that has the distinction of being at once one of the oldest in the country and the newest in the region. Grover Vineyards, set up in the southern state of Karnataka in 1988 by businessman Kanwal Grover, partnered with Vallée de Vin in 2012 to form Grover Zampa Vineyards.

“We were the first to grow the Spanish variant, tempranillo, and viognier—for white wine—because these worked better than a riesling or chardonnay,” says Sushant Soni, Grover Zampa Vineyard’s hospitality manager, adding that the climate is most suitable for chenin and shiraz.

Founded by one Shailendra Pai, nearby Vallonné Vineyards—marketed as ‘India’s premiere boutique winery’—had its first harvest in 2009. Their rosé is made of the cabernet sauvignon grape and their dessert wine, vin de passerillage, is crafted along the same the lines of the straw wine (vin de paille) from Jura, France. Vallonné is the first to offer Indian wine enthusiasts—and overseas Indian wine enthusiasts—the chance to own a premium Indian wine that’s been matured in French barrels.

Tucked away from everyone else, in a small village called Geeta Kunj, is a vineyard responsible for some of India’s best wines. The Patil family started Reveilo in 2000 and brought in Italian winemaker, Andrea Valentinuzzi, to grow varietals such as sangiovese, nero d’avola and grillo. The winery today hosts popular vineyard tours and tastings.

And it’s not just India’s wineries making efforts to attract tourists—even the government has stepped in, opening a ‘wine park’, Vinchur, and supporting a festival to promote wine tourism in Nashik. This year’s 40-day India Grape Harvest was aimed at developing the Nashik Valley as a wine cluster.

India’s wine tourism may still be in its infancy, especially when compared to its European, South American, Australian and New Zealand cousins, but there’s much to savor in Nashik. It’s only taken two decades for the region to reach its current size and wine production rates—who can say what the next two might bring?

A district on India’s western coast has become an oenophile destination in just two decades—but you’ve probably never heard of it. Joanna Lobo samples the bouquet.

In Hindu mythology, the war between the gods and demons over a pot of amrit—the nectar of immortality—resulted in a few drops of it falling to Earth. These four sites are now deemed holy, and host a Kumbh Mela—a pilgrimage of faith and spirituality—every 12 years.

One of these sites is Nashik, a district on the banks of the Godavari in Maharashtra on India’s western coast. But today, Nashik is famous for another drink—wine.

The Queen and Prince Philip: Duke always packed THIS as their romance was blossoming https://briefnews.eu/the-queen-and-prince-philip-duke-always-packed-this-as-their-romance-was-blossoming/ https://briefnews.eu/the-queen-and-prince-philip-duke-always-packed-this-as-their-romance-was-blossoming/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 09:30:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-queen-and-prince-philip-duke-always-packed-this-as-their-romance-was-blossoming/

Queen Elizabeth II, 91, and Prince Philip, 96, first met at the 1934 wedding of Prince Philip’s cousin, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark and Queen Elizabeth II’s uncle, Prince George, Duke of Kent.

It wasn’t until 1939  when they met again at Royal Naval College in Dartmouth that romantic sparks began to fly.

In the lead up to their engagement in 1947, the Duke of Edinburgh served as an officer in the Royal Navy.

But a series of unexpected home postings meant Philip was able to make frequent trips to London to visit Elizabeth.

According to Philip Eade, the author of Young Prince Philip: His Early Life, Philip would stay either with his grandmother, Princess Victoria at Kensington Palace or on a camp bed at the home of his uncle, Dickie Mountbatten.

Among the habits the Mountbatterns’ butler, John Dean, picked up during Philip’s stays, was a particular item he always packed.

Philip Eade revealed that when he had gone to bed, the butler would wash and iron his shirt and darn his socks.

But as he unpacked Philip’s weekend bag he would notice there was always a photograph of Princess Elizabeth in a battered leather frame.

John Dean, who later became Philip’s valet, also noted the Philip’s civilian wardrobe was “scantier than that of many a bank clerk” and that all he brought with him sometimes was a razor.

The Queen and Prince Philip have been married for almost 70 years now, and will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on November 20, but how do they show their love when in public?

The Queen and Prince Philip have always been rather subtle in public when it comes to their relationship, preferring not to indulge in displays of public affection.

But, while the pair are subdued in their body language, the signs of their love, which has lasted for seven decades, are obvious to the trained eye.

What does a body language expert have to say about their relationship? Judi James looked at four recent snapshots of the royal couple to give her professional opinion.

Judi said: “The Queen has historically combined duty with a suppression of body language displays in public, but Prince Philip has always seemed to be her very charming Achilles heel when it comes to those odd moments of emotional ‘leakage’.

“Unlike other royal couples like Charles and Camilla and William and Kate there is a large height difference between the Queen and her husband, plus a rather traditional style of male-female posing, with Philip always looking as though he’s on the parade ground while the Queen has a rather county lady vibe.

“Despite these differences though, they are often quite tightly choreographed with some unexpectedly strong mirroring, showing like-mindedness.”

10 AI startups blossoming beyond Silicon Valley https://briefnews.eu/10-ai-startups-blossoming-beyond-silicon-valley/ https://briefnews.eu/10-ai-startups-blossoming-beyond-silicon-valley/#respond Sat, 15 Jul 2017 05:54:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/10-ai-startups-blossoming-beyond-silicon-valley/

As I was heading from Atlanta to San Francisco to talk about investing in artificial intelligence at MB 2017, it struck me how artificial intelligence may be the buzzword of this year. Every startup seems to need the “AI accessory” in their pitch. Alphabet declares itself an AI company. Investors are putting billions in artificial intelligence deals. Google launches an AI-investing special forces team. Philosophers bemoan a potential superhuman AI. There’s even AI therapy–have you seen AI-assisted mental health coach Sibly?

When I’m facing an AI-identity crises, I like to talk to a chatbot.

Anyone’s chatbot. The sizzling smarts on display always calm me down. Still, kidding aside, AI pretty much deserves its hype. The market is predicted to be $ 37B by 2025. I am convinced it’s the next wave of tech and will change how we do things as much as mobility did and as much as personal computing did before that.

One of the (mis)perceptions in artificial intelligence is that AI headquarters is somewhere near San Francisco.

While major enterprise tech firms with AI acquisition maws like Apple and Google are there, artificial intelligence is a wave you can catch anywhere.

10 Promising artificial intelligence startups outside of Silicon Valley

Disruptive artificial intelligence startups outside of Silicon Valley speak for themselves — and some actually do, especially in the case of Dave or Motion.AI. Here are a few examples:

1. Motion AI (Naperville, IL)

Chatbots hold a lot of promise, but for most applications, they aren’t smart enough yet. Motion.AI is solving for smarter chat bots by focusing on very specific use cases like restaurants and survey, and also building an abstracting layer around the chatbot to modernize the chatbot as a platform. Their client list includes Wix, Hubspot, LG, Kohls, Kia, Liberty Mutual, and Deutsche Telekom. They’ve launched a bot store where you can download chatbot templates, too.

“While we do have some team members on the coasts, Chicago has been a great place to grow our company,” says CEO David Nelson. “The machine learning talent pool has proven to be quite rich, in large part due to strong ML departments at the University of Chicago and UIUC. Because Chicago historically is a very strong sales operations hub, this gives us confidence in remaining headquartered in the area long-term.”

2. Dave (Los Angeles)

Dave is a learning chatbot designed to outsmart overdrafts. It predicts upcoming expenses and lets users borrow up to $ 75 to prevent an expensive overdraft fee.

3. Everly Well (Austin)

Getting too much mercury in your diet? Sensitive to gluten? Do you produce enough testosterone? Order one of the home lab kits from Everly Well and their intuitive interface will guide you through the answers to your burning questions.

Most people can’t make heads or tails of traditional lab results. EverlyWell’s simple charts and predictive analytics can help you know not only the score, but also typical take-aways form someone with your lab results.

4. Fuzzy Logix (Charlotte)

Started by two ex-Bank of America quants, Fuzzy Logix is a faster way for enterprise companies to get intelligence from large structured data sets. Their DB Lytix product works within existing databases to perform predictive analytics that takes hours instead of days, and requires no data export.

5. IntuiTap (Houston)

Spinal taps have a deservedly painful reputation. They’re notoriously difficult for both doctor and patient. 20-70% of all spinal tap procedures have complications. Thanks to mechanical engineer Jessica Traver from Perdue, there’s now a device thatguides the physician to getting it right the first time.

6. NS8 (Herndon, VA)

When you think of ecommerce fraud, for most of us shoppers our head goes to credit card fraud and identity theft. Actually, for online retailers, remarketing fraud and advertising fraud are also huge drains on revenue. NS8 monitors site traffic to find fake shoppers surfing for coupons and paid links that zap the profit out of an online retailer’s marketing campaigns.

7. Prospectify (Scottsdale, AZ)

Most sales and marketing departments know some part of their prospect lists are stale, but which part? It’s no surprise list maintenance falls to the bottom of the marketing department’s must-do’s. Prospectify feels your pain The startup just raised its first round to automate lead generation, list cleaning and verification using machine learning to help predict the right emails for outdated contacts and more.

8. TempoQuest (Las Vegas)

Weather prediction is so widely inaccurate it’s often the butt of jokes. This team says it’s not the models or the science. It’s the snail-like speed of the computers running the huge 3D models of massive weather systems. Their method–1523 times faster–uses machine learning to quickly create high resolution weather predictions on zippy multi-core processors. Where now, it can be a 30-60% chance of rain, they intend to narrow the gaps and literally help the planes and trains run more on time.

9. Trust Stamp (Atlanta)

Trust Stamp provides “trust as a service.” Financial institutions lose $ 20 billion a year to synthetic identity fraud. This company’s approach combines your face with your online interfaces, such a social accounts, to add a layer of behavioral confidence. One of the fun applications? Send email that can only be opened when the recipient’s face is in front of the computer.

CEO Andrew Gowasack says, “Our simplest use of AI is predicting the likelihood that the subject of a photo is the same person that is depicted in thousands of possible formats of photo ID or in images data mined from social media.” For example, “In the US we are used both to identify synthetic identities in credit card applications and also to authenticate the senders and recipients of encrypted emails. In the U.K. we provide risk-based anti-money-laundering (AML) screening in real estate transactions.”

10. SparkCognition (Austin)

Amir Husain, CEO, says, “SparkCognition was founded on the idea that the time has come for machines to think independently, solve problems and augment human potential, . . . I believe that intelligent systems hold tremendous promise for the human race and may in fact present the only practical avenue to rid us of many of the ills that have plagued us since the dawn of our own consciousness — poverty, hunger, disease, and fear.” SparkCognition just raised a $ 32 million series B from their Austin headquarters, with Boeing and Verizon participating.

Could it be that artificial intelligence startups outside of Silicon Valley have an edge on applying AI in real world scenarios?

After all, much of the big, dynamic data that drives the best AI comes from sensors and corporate applications, and those are most at home in agricultural, manufacturing and industrial settings.

“We started out using resources from the obvious big name providers because the idea of creating our own AI solutions was daunting for a small Atlanta startup. We quickly discovered that there were no killer applications and that by creating our own solutions we could tailor them to our exact needs. Atlanta is a human and intellectual melting pot and we intend to reflect that to produce truly global AI products,” said Gowasack.
