There are mistakes in every single major motion picture every made. Sometimes it’s something as small as a continuity error, like the position of a pen on a desk. Other times it’s something glaring, like a Stormtrooper banging their head on a blast door inside the Death Star for everyone to notice.

That’s right, in case you haven’t ever seen it, there’s a blooper in the original Star Wars (which celebrated its 40th anniversary yesterday) where one Stormtrooper hits their head on a blast door as they enter a room in the Death Star while looking for the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. It’s a pretty big mistake to end up in a movie, and now we finally have an explanation as to why it happened from the clumsy Stormtrooper himself.

For those who may not know what we’re talking about, keep an eye on the far right Stormtrooper:

Somehow that take made it into the movie, and now the actor who played the Stormtrooper, a man from the United Kingdom by the name of Laurie Goode, has explained just what happened to The Hollywood Reporter:

“On the second day of filming, I developed an upset stomach. By midmorning I had paid three to four visits to the loo/bathroom. Having re-dressed myself and returned to the set, I felt the need to rush back to the gents’ toilets, but I was placed in [the] shot. On about the fourth take, as I shuffled along, I felt my stomach rumbling, and “bang,” I hit my head! As I wasn’t moving too fast, it was more of a scuffed bash, so it didn’t hurt, but as no one shouted “cut,” I thought the shot wasn’t wide enough for me to be in frame.”

But how was there not another take that could have been used for this scene? Sure, Star Wars had a small budget at the time, which makes its achievements in special effects all the more impressive, but there wasn’t a better take to put into the movie? Goode explains how the takes went for that particular scene:

“I remember after the first two takes, we were told to hold our guns in our left hands as opposed to our right. So I believe the head bang happened on the fourth take — whatever number of takes we did, the head bang happened on the last take. When it first happened, that day I told my fellow actor on the film, Mark Kirby, that I hit my head, but we didn’t go for another take.”

You might have heard about another man named Michael Leader claiming to be the Stormtrooper from that scene, but he has since died, and Goode claims that his story isn’t true. Supposedly there have been more than a few people claiming to be this infamous Stormtrooper, so many that there’s even an Indiegogo campaign that is looking for funds to support a documentary to find out who the real man behind the mask is:

Frankly, my biggest question is if George Lucas spent millions of dollars adding visual effects to Star Wars, why didn’t he fix that scene? Presumably it’s because it’s kind of a legendary moment in the movie now, but that didn’t stop him from messing with much more important parts of Star Wars, like the cantina meeting between Han Solo and Greedo, or inserting Hayden Christensen into Return of the Jedi. For crying out loud there’s even a sound effect when his head hits the door.

Anyway, for now we’ll have to take Laurie Goode at his word, at least until someone comes up with a better story.

AUSTRALIAN coach Mal Meninga has ruled out Parramatta star Semi Radradra making a return to the Kangaroos line-up, rendering his scintillating NRL form irrelevant.

Radradra scored a career-high four tries to help the Eels record a comprehensive victory over St George Illawarra on Sunday night.

But despite his strong showing, Meninga is maintaining that Radradra’s decision to leave the NRL at the end of the year for French rugby meant he wouldn’t be considered for Kangaroos selection.

“We’ve got a really important tournament internationally with the World Cup and we’ll pick Australians who are going to play rugby league,” Meninga told Queenslanders Only on Wednesday.

“At the end of the day we’ve got Valentine Holmes and Corey Oates, if Billy (Slater) is back at fullback we’ve got Darbs (Darius Boyd) on the wing.

“We’ve got plenty of replacements.”

But Meninga left the door open for Andrew Fifita to return to the Test fold, saying it’s up to the Sharks star to make his case for redemption.

Asked if Fifita was a chance to play for the Kangaroos again, Meninga said: “Definitely. It’s up to him though.

“It’s about apologising, it’s about your actions,” he said.

“It’s about taking responsibility and being accountable for what you’ve done.”

Meanwhile, Jarryd Hayne’s public statements about a possible move to French rugby haven’t gone down well with the Kangaroos coach.

Meninga hinted players who spoke about leaving the game would not be considered for national honours.

“Some things I hear in the media from players where they say things like ‘I don’t know whether I’ll be in the game or not’ or ‘I’m going to go to rugby union’, to me that’s not looking after the game,” Meninga said.

“That’s not what I want to see in a player.

“When they say things like that they don’t understand how privileged they are and how lucky they are to be involved.”

Russian athletes, who won gold at the biathlon world championships in Hochfilzen, Austria, had mixed feelings when the wrong version of the Russian anthem started playing. Taking matters into their own hands, they sang the right version a cappella.

Several seconds into the song, the Russian biathlon team – Anton Shipulin, Aleksey Volkov, Maxim Tsvetkov, and Anton Babikov – realized that something was not quite right. The festive song coming through the speakers was Mikhail Glinka’s ‘Patrioticheskaya Pesnya’ (A Patriotic Song) written in 1833. The piece, traditionally performed without lyrics, was only used as the Russian national anthem from 1999 to 2001, until Russian President Vladimir Putin reinstated, by popular request, the Soviet-era melody by Alexander Aleksandrov.

Glinka’s old anthem had played for about 30 seconds, with scores of Russian fans booing and whistling, annoyed by the organizers’ gaffe. 

Russian sports commentator Dmitry Guberniev then took to the stage and gave the microphone to the four Russian champions, who sang the entire Russian anthem a cappella, encouraged by crowds of teammates and fans in Austria.

The organizers, who apologized for the blooper, saying it was a mistake in good faith, finally played the right tune.

The Russian team won the gold medal in the men’s 4×7.5km relay at the IBU World Championships for the first time in nine years on Saturday.

France came second, and Austria claimed third place.

The Russian anthem slip-up was nothing, however, compared to the faux pas at the Fed Cup tennis tournament in Hawaii last Saturday, when part of the German national anthem from the Nazi era was sung, leaving the US Tennis Association red-faced. The offensive first stanza, used during the notorious Nazi era and banned in Germany since the end of World War II, was sung during the opening ceremony of the quarterfinal match between Alison Riske of the US and Andrea Petkovic of Germany, with the latter describing it as “the worst thing that has ever happened to me.”
