Neill Blomkamp could never get his Alien movie off the ground, so he’s latching onto another classic sci-fi franchise instead. The District 9 and Chappie director will helm a new RoboCop movie, titled RoboCop Returns. The film is said to be both a reboot and a sequel to the original franchise.
Deadline has the scoop on Blomkamp’s RoboCop reboot. Original RoboCop writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing and executive producing. Justin Rhodes, who wrote the upcoming Terminator film, will re-write an older script from Neumeier and Miner. Neumeier actually teased the new film back in January, when he said:
“There’s been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie. In my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old school thing.”
While it’s easy to call this a reboot, the new RoboCop is also going to serve as a sequel to Paul Verhoeven‘s original RoboCop. This is a similar approach to the upcoming Halloween film, which is both a reboot and a direct sequel. In RoboCop Returns, “anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.”
In the original film, Detroit cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) was brutally gunned down in the line of duty. Mega-corporation Omni Consumer Products then took Murphy’s corpse and rebuilt it with robotic components, turning Murphy into part man, part machine, all cop. It made for a wildly entertaining, shockingly violent, and highly satirical sci-fi classic.
“The original definitely had a massive effect on me as a kid,” Blomkamp said. “I loved it then and it remains a classic in the end of 20th Century sci-fi catalog, with real meaning under the surface. Hopefully that is something we can get closer to in making of a sequel. That is my goal here. What I connected to as a kid has evolved over time. At first, the consumerism, materialism and Reaganomics, that ’80s theme of America on steroids, came through most strongly. But As I’ve gotten older, the part that really resonated with me is identity, and the search for identity. As long as the human component is there, a good story can work in any time period, it’s not locked into a specific place in history. What’s so cool about RoboCop is that like good Westerns, sci-fi films and dramas, the human connection is really important to a story well told. What draws me now is someone searching for their lost identity, taken away at the hands of people who are benefiting from it, and seeing his memory jogged by events.”
While there were two sequels to Verhoeven’s RoboCop, neither was very good (although RoboCop 2 has its charms). There was also a 2014 RoboCop remake from director José Padilha. It was terrible, and misunderstood all the things that made the original RoboCop so iconic. And I fear that same thing will happen again here. While the involvement of original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner is promising, it’s clear that what really made the original RoboCop so special was Verhoeven’s direction. Taking him out of the equation is bound to produce diminishing returns.
Blomkamp started out as a promising filmmaker with District 9, but all his subsequent films have been lackluster. But perhaps RoboCop will revive his career. Blomkamp does have an interesting visual style, and he’s also not one to shy away from R-rated violence. If he can bring that aesthetic to this film, and if the script works, it might turn out okay.

In this edition of Sequel Bits:
Fresh off of the challenges of swapping out a major role for his latest film, All the Money in the World, director Ridley Scott is chatting about returning to one of his oldest cinematic loves yet again: the Alien franchise. Speaking with the Toronto Sun, he spoke highly of the film series he began back in the 1970s:
“There’s no reason why Alien should now not be on the same level for fans as Star Trek and Star Wars. So I think the next step as to where we go is, do we sustain the Alien (series) with the evolution of the beast or do we reinvent something else? I think you need to have an evolution on this famous beast because he’s the best monster ever, really.”
He won’t get much argument from me about the xenomorph being the best monster ever. Elsewhere in the interview, when he was asked if he wanted to make another entry, he responded:
“I would like to; they’re crazy if they don’t. David is a fantastic villain. I love what (Michael Fassbender) did in Covenant. But it’s f—ing hard, dude.”
It may be “f–ing hard,” but if anyone can do it, Scott can.
Yes. I have moved on. What I meant was that I wish there was a way for fans to see some of what we had designed. It was an amazing chance to work in the world Ridley and James Cameron created. And collaborate with Sigourney. https://t.co/zgztIBj7LQ

Meanwhile, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, who recently shared even more concept art from his Alien sequel that never came to fruition, took to Twitter to clarify that he has “moved on” from the idea of ever making that film. So it seems as if the future of the Alien franchise is firmly in Ridley Scott’s hands (which is to say, just where it should be).
While Pitch Perfect 3 may not be performing quite as well as its predecessor at the box office, the director of the aca-sequel still wants this franchise to keep on rolling. In an interview with THR, Trish Sie was asked if she thinks there’s an opening for a fourth movie or a reboot somewhere down the line, and this was her response:
“…Of course that’s above my pay grade and I have no idea and am not the one making the decisions but as far as I am concerned, I would see these movies on and on and on until they start sucking. I think whether it’s these women in the next stage of life or it’s a new group of women going through these things, I think there are endless ways to chart the course of the girls’ lives and a woman’s life.”
Sounds like the typical “yeah, it’d be great, but I’m not the one making the decision” kind of answer. In other words: who knows if Pitch Perfect 4 is ever going to happen?
A few Pitch Perfect fans may have been a bit disappointed to discover that the guys were left on the sidelines in the third entry. (I actually thought the second movie was better than the first specifically because it ditched the first film’s bland love story.) But in that same THR interview, director Trish Sie explains the reasons we didn’t see Jesse and Bumper pop up in the third entry:
“I think the main purpose was these girls are moving on with their life. Maybe they’ll get back to these guys at some point. A lot of people don’t end up with their college boyfriend and we wanted it to be about them and their independence and finding their way in the world and moving ahead alone. And it just felt like it was time to make a fresh start.”
The live-action Power Rangers reboot hasn’t officially received a sequel yet, but that’s not stopping RJ Cyler, who played Billy the Blue Ranger in the film, from coming up with ideas for his character in Power Rangers 2. Speaking with Inverse, the 22-year-old actor explained what he wants to see from Billy moving forward:
“Billy will definitely be the same Billy, but he’ll be more comfortable because he’s got friends who got his back. Billy has something else to do other than blow stuff up. He doesn’t just have science, he has Jason and Zack and Kimberly. In the second movie, you’ll definitely see more of a confident person. He’ll be more strong of a person.”
It’s unclear whether Cyler has read a draft of Power Rangers 2 and is relaying details about his character from a real script or if he’s just spitballing about what he’d personally like to see, but we’ll keep you updated if Lionsgate decides to make the sequel morph from “loose concept” to “actually in production.”
Did you know that they’re still making Johnny English movies? The first film, a spoof of the James Bond franchise with Rowan Atkinson (better known as Mr. Bean) in the title role, was released all the way back in 2003. A sequel, Johnny English Reborn, inexplicably dropped in 2011. And now Johnny English 3 will hit theaters on September 20, 2018. Atkinson is coming back to reprise his role, and this time former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) is on board as a co-star. What a time to be alive!
And finally, OmegaUnderground reports that World War Z 2 director David Fincher has hired Eric Barba to serve as the zombie sequel’s visual effects supervisor. Barba was the VFX supervisor on movies like Tron: Legacy and Oblivion, but he’s also collaborated with Fincher multiple times on films like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Zodiac, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl. Hopefully he can improve the effects for the sequel, since the hordes of zombies in the original left a lot to be desired.

I regret to inform you that Neill Blomkamp is at it again. The filmmaker behind District 9 and Elysium has released even more potential Alien 5 concept art, teasing the Alien sequel he never got a chance to make. Does this indicate the previously thought to be dead project might be alive again, or is Blomkamp just having some fun? Let’s speculate wildly!
A little while back, Neill “Chappie” Blomkamp, who directed the very good District 9 and some other films which are the opposite of very good, revealed some concept art for his own take on an Alien sequel. The art got people talking, and resulted in Blomkamp becoming attached to an Alien sequel that would not be connected to Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus. Blomkamp’s idea was something of a reimagining that essentially ignored the events of Alien 3 and every film after that, and instead served as a direct sequel to James Cameron’s Aliens. It looked as if Alien 5 would be Blomkamp’s next film, and then everything fell apart, with the filmmaker saying his Alien film had a “slim” chance of ever being made. Now, Blomkamp is back with even more concept art.
Blomkamp took to his Instagram page to reveal two new pieces of art: one shows a xenomorph crawling around in a air duct, something we’ve seen in a dozen Alien movies by now; the other shows one of the combat vehicles from Cameron’s Aliens. In other words, there is literally nothing “new” here, but people will still go crazy and pretend this is all very exciting.
Could Blomkamp posting these images indicate that his Alien 5 project is back on track? There’s an unconfirmed rumor floating around that Fox has cancelled Ridley Scott’s possible Alien: Covenant sequel after that film left a lot of audiences cold. If true, that could indicate that Fox (and possibly Disney, who now own Fox) want to move ahead with Blomkamp’s idea instead. Or this could all just be Blomkamp having some fun on social media. I’m sure a lot of people would be interested in Blomkamp’s idea, since it clearly wants to return the franchise to more familiar ground and recreate the look and feel of Aliens. Personally, I’d prefer more weird Ridley Scott Covenant sequels, that may not remain true to the original Alien franchise, but at least attempt to try exciting new things. But that’s me.

Neill Blomkamp may be temporarily stepping away from feature films to focus his energies on his new experimental Oats Studios, but that doesn’t mean he’s not entertaining the notion of returning to the world of District 9, the sci-fi movie that put him on the map.
It does mean, however, that he’s finally killing that Alien 5 project that he’s been been teasing for a long, long time.
Blomkamp talked about his future projects and the ones that definitely aren’t happening in an interview with The Verge while promoting the short film studio he is launching.
While he seems to be focused on the passion project that is Oats Studios, Blomkamp hinted that he is thinking about his future feature films. Naturally, he was asked about the two buzziest projects that his name has been attached to: Alien and a District 9 sequel. And he gave some bad news and good news.
The bad news — that Alien 5 is not happening — isn’t a huge surprise considering Ridley Scott has taken back ownership of the sci-fi horror franchise with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant (and if he has his way, he won’t be relinquishing it any time soon). He told The Verge:
I think it’s totally dead, yes. That would be an accurate assumption at this point. It’s sad. I spent a long time working on that, and I feel like it was really pretty awesome. But politically, the way it’s gone now, and the way that it all is — it’s just not going to live.
Blomkamp clarified what he meant by “politically,” saying that Ridley’s latest Alien films set the franchise down a different path than Blomkamp had expected, and he wanted to be “respectful and not go stamping around in this world that he created.” You may remember that Blomkamp’s idea was a direct sequel to James Cameron’s Aliens that ignored the events of the controversial Alien 3, a choice that left fans of the series divided.
And what of a sequel to Blomkamp’s 2009 social commentary-charged sci-fi debut? While Blomkamp has made a point of avoiding a making a sequel to District 9 right away, instead releasing original films Elysium and Chappie, he said that he wants to return to that world in another feature film:
With District 9, I plan on making another film in that world. To go back and work with WETA, and make the film would be cool, but anything that pre-exists like that may not be the best fit for whatever we’re trying here.”
So fans curious over the fate of Wikus (Sharlto Copley) probably won’t get the answers they crave. But a spin-off in the world of District 9 could probably be equally if not more fascinating, because of the bleak picture of alien apartheid that the first film painted. I thought the film was more powerful for its social commentary inspired by Blomkamp’s own experiences in apartheid-era South Africa than in the action-packed storyline of Wikus. To see a spin-off film explore that world with another story would be a fascinating approach.
Oats Studios’ short films are set to arrive on the streaming service Steam soon.

Neill Blomkamp broke into the scene with shorts like Landfall and Alive in Joburg, a gritty sci-fi documentary that became the basis for his feature film debut and biggest hit to date, District 9.
After making the modestly-to-poorly received sci-fi films Elysium and Chappie, Blomkamp may be stepping away from trying to live up to early praise of him as the next exciting sci-fi director, and going back to his roots: short films. Blomkamp has been teasing his mysterious Oats Studios project for a while, but a new teaser reveals a hint of what the director’s experimental short film initiative will look like.
The cryptic trailer opens with a shot of a dilapidated Eiffel Tower, as a voiceover says, “We were once mankind. We were humanity. They came here to exterminate us.”
The trailer continues with shots of a woman (played by Dakota Fanning?) shooting an alien in a red-lit corridor, American soldiers facing zombie creatures in Vietnam, and a few more shots of warfare against aliens, complete with exploding tanks and terrifying creatures. The trailer announces that the series of short experimental films called “Oats: Volume 1” will be available to stream on Steam in the next couple months.
Blomkamp has been teasing the prospect of Oat Studios for some time now, asking if fans would be interested in buying films off Steam, Valve’s PC distribution service best known for being a cheap distributor of PC games. Blomkamp later posted some mysterious images to Twitter, showing off one of the aliens seen in the trailer, as well as a Vietnam-era soldier. Earlier this month, he posted a 15 second teaser of a soldier shooting down an unknown something.
If I sold experimental short films on @steam_games as tests for potential full feature films, would people watch them?
— Neill Blomkamp (@NeillBlomkamp) April 9, 2017
With this project, it seems like Blomkamp is trying to utilize Steam as a go-to place for experimental art and as an outlet for his own wacky and bizarre alien invasion ideas without the limits of studio expectations.
Heck, this could be the place where we see his never-made Halo film. You may remember that he was supposed to direct a feature version of the popular video game series, but the project didn’t make it past development. Now I’m imagining a world where Blomkamp can forgo movie studio supervision completely and make movies directly for gamers. Or maybe I’m being too hopeful and already expecting Steam to become the next Netflix or Amazon Studios.
Nevertheless, the teaser is intriguing, and could give Blomkamp the creative boost to once again reach the heights of the magnificent District 9.

Blomkamp has tweeted constantly about Alien 5 and Weaver has gushed about his ideas and “incredible script.”
Now Ridley Scott has told a French magazine that the chances were “pretty slim” of Alien 5 ever making it to the big screen. He has also cast a shadow over the comments made by his fellow director and the iconic star of the original Alien movies.
Scott said: “I think that it will never happen. It was never on the cards.”
So what is going on?
Neil Blomkamp seems to have had a different idea after originally tweeting an image of a classic Alien with the comment: “I think it’s officially my next film.”
As recently as last week, for Alien Day on April 27 he tweeted a picture of Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, surely knowing that fans would again post countless comments begging for news on Alien 5 – which, of course, they did.
Scott, however, in the new interview with Allocine completely dismantled fans’ hopes and refuted reports that there was even a script in place.
Yet, last summer Weaver announced: “There is an incredible script by Neill (Blomkamp).
“I didn’t want to do a fifth one. I thought going to earth wouldn’t be fun. I got this script that was amazing and gives fans everything they’re looking for and innovates in ways that became part of the world for me.
“The script itself has so much in it that’s so original, but also really satisfies the, I would say, the primal needs of the aliens. It’s a tribute to all of the great work that the other directors have done, in a way, but goes in a completely new direction.”
In the new interview Scott underplays the existence of any major plans or script.
He added: ”It was just an idea that evolved from a pitch of a few dozen pages.”
Weaver had said she and Blomkamp had hoped to work on Alien 5 last year but Scott’s Prometheus and its sequels were taking priority. She added: “I think Ridley [Scott] didn’t want them all coming out at the same time.”
