Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

  • Senator Bernie Sanders blocked a Republican resolution to avert a rail strike and override workers.
  • Republicans want Congress to step in and enact contract recommendations, even if workers don't agree.
  • Sanders said that workers deserve paid sick leave, which is the demand holding up agreements.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont on Wednesday blocked a Republican proposal to push through an agreement for rail workers and prevent a potentially economy-stopping national strike.

The GOP-backed resolution would forgo workers' demands to be able to call out sick or for family emergencies. As the strike looms, Amtrak has canceled cross-country trips, and the Biden administration is scrambling  to help broker a deal.

"The CEOs in the freight rail industry need to understand that they cannot have it all," Sanders said during a Wednesday floor speech. "The rail industry must agree to a contract that is fair and is just. It is time for Congress to stand on the side of workers for a change and not just the heads of large multinational corporations."

Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Roger Wicker of Mississippi wanted Congress to pass a set of recommendations from a presidentially-appointed bipartisan panel and avert a strike, even if workers did not voluntarily agree to a deal.

"There are mechanisms that have been in the law for a long time to allow Congress to step in and prevent the economic disaster that would ensue," Wicker told Insider earlier on Wednesday. "I think it's time to invoke that provisional law."

The US Chamber of Commerce, which represents business interests, estimated a shutdown would cost the economy $ 2 billion a day. John Drake, VP of transportation, infrastructure and supply chain policy at the Chamber of Commerce, told Insider in a statement that he "welcomes" the Republican resolution.

But the proposal would potentially overrule workers' decision on their contract, which they've been bargaining since 2019, should workers not reach a voluntary agreement with rail carriers. Workers are set to strike on Friday if they do not reach an agreement; unions and rail carriers have been in discussions facilitated by Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and the Department of Labor throughout Wednesday. However, Congress taking action would force a new deal and avert a strike.

Sanders, Wicker, and Burr sparred over the workers' demands, with Sanders emphasizing that workers should get paid for time out sick — and a say in their contract.

"I wonder if the CEOs and top executives of the railroads would get fired if they got sick or had a medical emergency in their families," Sanders said. "I doubt it very much."

Sanders noted that rail workers would be entitled to no sick days, either paid or unpaid, under the current set of recommendations from the presidential panel. That's proven to be a hardline issue for the set of unions who haven't signed on to the tentative agreement.

"The Burr-Wicker resolution would take these fundamental rights away from workers," he said.

Burr said that the resolution is now in the hands of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and expressed confidence Republicans could lend most of the votes needed to pass the resolution. It would need 60 votes to cross the filibuster threshold, an amount of support it's very unlikely to garner. Ten Senate Democrats would need to join every Senate Republican for the measure to pass.

"I don't think anyone wants a strike or a lockout," Sanders said. "We hope that a settlement will be reached in the next day. In my view, if we reach a settlement, I would hope that the railroads — which are making huge profits — treat their workers with the respect they deserve."

Cloudflare blocks trans harassment forum Kiwi Farms following escalation of ‘targeted threats’ https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-blocks-trans-harassment-forum-kiwi-farms-following-escalation-of-targeted-threats/ https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-blocks-trans-harassment-forum-kiwi-farms-following-escalation-of-targeted-threats/#respond Mon, 05 Sep 2022 07:48:14 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/cloudflare-blocks-trans-harassment-forum-kiwi-farms-following-escalation-of-targeted-threats/ DNS and internet security provider Cloudflare has blocked Kiwi Farms, an infamous forum known for its online and real-world harassment campaigns. CEO Matthew Prince announced the company’s decision on Saturday after it initially resisted calls to stop protecting the website.

“As Kiwi Farms has felt more threatened, they have reacted by being more threatening,” Prince told The Washington Post. “We think there is an imminent danger, and the pace at which law enforcement is able to respond to those threats we don’t think is fast enough to keep up.” On the company’s blog, Prince said that Cloudflare saw an increase in targeted threats “unlike we have previously seen from Kiwi Farms or any other customer before.”

Kiwi Farms was founded in 2013 by former 8chan administrator Joshua Moon. In the decade since it went online, at least three suicides have been linked to harassment campaigns that originated on the forum. In recent weeks, Kiwi Farms has gained widespread notoriety across both sides of the US political spectrum. After she was the target of multiple swatting attacks that originated on the website, trans Twitch streamer Clara Sorrenti began a campaign to shut down Kiwi Farms. She used the hashtag DropKiwifarms to urge Cloudflare and other critical internet infrastructure providers to stop serving the website.

“There are countless people suffering because of this website,” Sorrenti told The Post on Saturday, moments after police arrived at her home in the wake of another swatting attempt. “Kiwi Farms isn’t about free speech, it’s about hate speech. The majority of the content on the site is threads used for targeted harassment against political targets.”

Separately, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia called for the forum’s shutdown after a user claiming affiliation with Kiwi Farms sent police to her home. “That website needs to be taken down,” Greene told Newsmax during an interview. “There should be no business or any kind of service where you can target your enemy."

Earlier in the week, it appeared Cloudflare would not take action against Kiwi Farms. The company published a blog post on Wednesday detailing its policies on abusive content. Without directly mentioning the forum, Prince and another executive argued that withholding security services from websites the company and public find reprehensible would ultimately harm oppressed and marginalized voices.

On Saturday, Prince described Cloudflare’s decision to block Kiwi Farms as a “dangerous one that we are not comfortable with.” He told The Post he would have preferred to take action in response to a court order but added it was an easier call than when Cloudflare decided to drop the Daily Stormer and 8chan. As of the writing of this story, Kiwi Farms is still online after moving to DDoS-guard and a Russian domain.

Russia blocks UN Security Council report on North Korea https://briefnews.eu/russia-blocks-un-security-council-report-on-north-korea/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-blocks-un-security-council-report-on-north-korea/#respond Thu, 30 Aug 2018 23:05:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-blocks-un-security-council-report-on-north-korea/ Russia has decided to halt discussions of a United Nations Security Council report on North Korea, due to disagreement on some of its points and concern over parts of it being leaked before publication, Moscow’s UN envoy has said.

Russia has blocked the upcoming report of the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee on North Korea (the 1718 Committee) on the implementation of sanctions against North Korea and its nuclear program, demanding that it be amended.

“The discussion was vivid… we put on hold the report of the Committee 1718, because we disagree with certain elements of the report and on the conduct of the business itself. I will not dwell upon it because the report, before it is published, is confidential,” Vassily Nebenzia, the Russian representative at the UN told the media.

Nebenzia reiterated that Russia has been vocally against any part of the report being made public prematurely.

“We and other delegations expressed concern on the regular leaks of the committee information into the press, you can look it up in the Internet,” he said. He added that while Russia has filed a request for the committee to investigate the leaks, “some members are not very willing to do so,” so Moscow decided to pursue this issue “individually.”

Russia will hold consultations with the head of the commitee about how to proceed further, Nebenzia said. At the moment, the UN has been doing virtually nothing to identify the source of the leaks since “certain parties” within the committee have been opposing Russia’s request.

“It’s not going anywhere,” Nebenzia said, calling the leaks “inadmissible” and “against the principle of the work of the committee.”

Many of the reservations Russia had expressed about the contents of the report have not been taken into account in the exisitng draft, the Russian diplomat revealed.

The confidential report on the implementation of sanctions imposed on North Korea was leaked by Reuters on August 4. According to the leaks, the report, a six-month review by independent experts, alleges that Pyongyang did not halt its nuclear and missile program and was supplying certain states in the Middle East and Africa with weapons, thus violating the UN sanctions. Among the alleged customers of the reclusive state are the Houthi rebels, fighting against the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. North Korea is also accused of shipping fuel, including coal and petroleum, which is prohibited under the strict sanctions’ regime as well.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has previously said it was “outraged” by unauthorized leaks from the committee, demanding a thorough investigation of what it described as “the flagrant violation of the rules and practice of the committee as well as basic diplomatic ethics.”

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova suggested that the ultimate purpose of the leak was to advance the “maximum pressure” campaign against Pyongyang spearheaded by the US

Court blocks FCC from cutting broadband subsidies in tribal lands https://briefnews.eu/court-blocks-fcc-from-cutting-broadband-subsidies-in-tribal-lands/ https://briefnews.eu/court-blocks-fcc-from-cutting-broadband-subsidies-in-tribal-lands/#respond Tue, 14 Aug 2018 04:19:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/court-blocks-fcc-from-cutting-broadband-subsidies-in-tribal-lands/

The FCC has hit a snag in its plan to curb broadband subsidies for low-income homes. A DC appeals court has issued a stay order temporary blocking the regulator from limiting the $ 25 monthly Lifeline subsidy in tribal lands, arguing that native groups and small carriers are likely to win their case opposing the cuts. The court agreed with plaintiffs that the FCC’s move would likely lead to a “major reduction, or outright elimination” of vital communication for many tribal residents, and “substantial, unrecoverable losses” for providers that might lead to them going out of business.

The judges behind the ruling also rejected the FCC’s claim that cutting the subsidies would spur carriers to build their own networks in tribal areas. The Commission didn’t show historical evidence that reduced subsidies would lead to more telecom investment, according to the court. If anything, the judges said, the evidence suggested the opposite. The plaintiffs pointed out that providers have typically refused to offer Lifeline service in their lands since the tribal Lifeline initiative started roughly two decades ago, and that the stricter requirements don’t give companies an incentive to expand.

The FCC unsurprisingly objected to the stay. It claimed that the plaintiffs hadn’t demonstrated the likelihood of “irreparable harm,” and insisted that blocking the Lifeline changes would amount to “wasting public funds” on areas it didn’t think should receive full subsidies.

There’s no certainty that the appeal will work out in the tribes’ favor. However, even the stay order could throw serious complications into the FCC’s plans. It saw the tribal cuts as part of a larger strategy to reduce Lifeline subsidies across the board, ostensibly to cut costs — this would force it to maintain at least some of the broadband discounts and blunt the impact of its order. That could be good news for tribal populations that risked losing internet access, but it’s doubtful the current FCC leadership will see things their way.

Netanyahu threatens Iran with ‘all Israel’s arms’ if Tehran blocks key waterway off Yemen https://briefnews.eu/netanyahu-threatens-iran-with-all-israels-arms-if-tehran-blocks-key-waterway-off-yemen/ https://briefnews.eu/netanyahu-threatens-iran-with-all-israels-arms-if-tehran-blocks-key-waterway-off-yemen/#respond Thu, 02 Aug 2018 10:06:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netanyahu-threatens-iran-with-all-israels-arms-if-tehran-blocks-key-waterway-off-yemen/ Benjamin Netanyahu has lashed out at Israeli arch-regional foe Iran, vowing that any attempt by Tehran to block the key waterway off Yemen’s coast would be met by force from the “international coalition” and Israel in particular.

The harsh statements by the Israeli PM, who was speaking at a graduation ceremony for naval officers on Wednesday, were referring to the recent Houthi attack on a Saudi oil tanker off Yemen’s western coast. The Saudi-led coalition has repeatedly said the Houthis are armed and supported by Iran, but both the group and Tehran deny the claims.

Yet, Netanyahu branded the incident “a sharp clash with Iran’s satellites who tried to sabotage international shipping” at the mouth of the Red Sea. The Saudi-led coalition insists that its oil tanker was attacked by the Houthis in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait located between Yemen and Eritrea and Djibouti on the Arabian Peninsula.

Nobody was injured and the damage posed no threat to the environment.

“If Iran tries to block the Straits of Bab al-Mandab, it will find itself facing an international coalition determined to prevent it from doing so, and this coalition will also include the State of Israel and all its arms,” Netanyahu warned.

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman backed Netanyahu’s statements on Tehran, saying that “recently, we have heard of threats to harm Israeli ships in the Red Sea.” Speaking at the same ceremony he promised that the Israeli military is ready “to respond simultaneously on two fronts, and also on the Red Sea.”

“Only in that case we would be less selective and the harm to our enemies would be greater. I hope they take that into account,” he added.

The Saudi-led coalition has been waging a military campaign against Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015, in an attempt to put the ousted Yemeni president Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi back in power. The intervention and blockade of the country has contributed to a massive humanitarian disaster. Since the start of the campaign, the coalition has been accused by human rights groups and activists of killing thousands of civilians but it has rarely accepted responsibility.

The Houthis, who control Yemen’s capital Sanaa and large parts in the north of the country, have been occasionally targeting Saudi oil facilities. In April, a Saudi oil tanker was also struck by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, west of Yemen’s Hodeidah. The vessel sustained “minor damage” and continued on its route.

Israel blocked supplies of fuel and gas to Gaza on Thursday in response to the continued sending of incendiary kites across the border, according to Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman. The measure will affect the Palestinian enclave which already suffers power cuts, especially for hospitals, AFP reported. The crackdown comes in response to “the pursuit of terrorism,” using incendiary balloons and border clashes between Israel and Gaza, Lieberman said in a statement. Israel has lost tracts of farmland and forests to fires set by kites and helium balloons laden with incendiary material and flown over from Gaza, Reuters said.
