Keep reading if you want to know more – and if you don’t mind blowing up your credit card balance.

ON NETFLIX

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs: Joel and Ethan Coen tell six stories — “Tales of the American Frontier,” according to the on-screen subtitle — in a land, as the title character puts it, “where the distances are great, and the scenery monotonous.” The results could’ve been scattershot, veering as it does between slapstick comedy, straight-up fantasy, existential darkness, and genuine warmth. Yet the stories are bound by the Coens’ irresistibly florid dialogue (a touchstone particularly appropriate to the genre, as evidenced by this film and True Grit before it) and by their often-underestimated (or altogether ignored) affection for their fellow man. Terrific performances abound, with particularly high marks to Zoe Kazan as a worried woman of the West and Stephen Root as a chatty bank teller who is not to be underestimated.

CAM: This disturbing psychological thriller from director Daniel Goldhaber and screenwriter Isa Mazzei feel like Netflix pulling the ol’ Hot Girls Wanted switcheroo again: luring horny viewers with the promise of naked flesh, and then getting very dark, very quick (and I do mean quick; the opening sequence is bonkers). Their story – of a webcam girl whose online identity is stolen and chillingly reappropriated – is steeped in the infrastructure of this world and in the real dangers of sex work, whilte their intelligent script maintains its inner logic even as our heroine’s plight creeps into the realm of surrealism. Madeline Brewer is terrific in that role, creating a sympathetic character who does deeply unsympathetic things (a neat trick, that).

ON AMAZON PRIME

Madeline’s Madeline: Newcomer Helena Howard is astonishingly good in the leading role of Josephine Decker’s risky, experimental drama, which spelunks through the chaotic psyche of a young woman whose smallest interactions are a struggle. It’s a visceral experience – Decker’s blurry, focus-shifting visual style, jumpy camerawork, and purposefully disorienting editing strategy put you right there in Madeline’s headspace. Some viewers may find it too nerve-jangling, and it’s hard to blame them. But it’s a must-see for risk-takers.

ON BLU-RAY / FILMSTRUCK

Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema: There’s no way for a mere capsule review to do justice to what is clearly the Blu-ray release of the year (the past several years? THE CENTURY?). But this is a case where a simple description tells you everything you need to know anyway: A Criterion Collection presentation of 39 films from the Swedish master, from 1946’s Crisis to 2003’s Saraband, all-timers and obscurities spread across 30 Blu-ray discs with copious extras (including documentaries, interviews, and commentaries) and a knockout companion book of accompanying essays. And guess what, bargain hunters: thanks to Barnes & Noble’s bi-annual 50% off Criterion sale, you can get this $ 300 megaset for $ 150 (a price that Amazon is, as of this writing, matching). Anyway, it’s a beautiful collection, full of some of the greatest works in all of movie-dom, NBD. (Many, many of these are also streaming on FilmStruck– while it lasts.)

ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

Blindspotting: Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal co-write and co-star in this wildly funny and proudly provocative story of Collin (Diggs) on his last three days of probation, and first day of (relative) freedom after. But this is not some wacky, Friday-style hangout comedy – that’s clear right away, when Collin witnesses a cop shooting an unarmed black man, and is haunted thereafter by the image of the crumpled body on the street – and their script takes well-aimed shots at gentrification, racism, and black rage. But it’s funny as hell, and can turn on a dime, moving from witty, vernacular dialogue humor into the kind of scenes where people say the uncomfortably quiet part out loud. Director Carlos López Estrada works in an energetic visual style, popping from scene to scene and shot to shot with a rhythmic intensity that mirrors the (mostly hip-hop) needle drops. Like Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You, which premiered alongside it at Sundance, Blindspotting feels like an early shot in a new movement of absurdist social satire, and it’s long overdue. (Includes audio commentaries, deleted scenes, and featurette.)

Crazy Rich Asians: Jon M. Chu’s monster hit adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s monster hit novel is gaudy, luxury-porn rom-com in the Nancy Meyers mold, but with a self-awareness films like those too often lack. Constance Wu is endlessly charming as a New Yorker who heads to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family, a crew of intimidating old-money types whose implicit disapproval sends her into something of an emotional tailspin. There’s not much suspense here, of course; the pleasure is in the insight (the film is very smart about contemporary slang and the way gossip spreads at this particular cultural and technological moment) and in the playing, with a properly steely Michelle Yeoh as the cold-as-ice mother, and an uproarious Awkwafina stealing every possible scene. (Includes audio commentary, deleted scenes, and gag reel.)

Skate Kitchen: Crystal Moselle’s narrative follow-up to the The Wolfpack is cut from the same cloth – she hangs out with, and eavesdrops on, her protagonists with a documentarian’s eye for detail – while also positioning itself as an updated, gender-swapped Kids, a doc-style snapshot of NYC skater kids with no illusions about the world they inhabit. Her focus is Camille (Rachelle Vinberg, excellent), a Long Island teen who starts hanging out with the skater girls she follows on Instagram and finds a community, just as she’s growing apart from her single mom. She’s a complicated protagonist, mostly because the film is about the process of figuring herself out, and Moselle dramatizes that process with clever edits and casually lovely cinematography. But most importantly, her intimate style deftly captures the end-of-the-world intensity of teenage relationships.

ON BLU-RAY

Some Like It Hot: Billy Wilder’s 1959 screwball classic — a new addition to the Criterion Collection — has topped more than one list of the best comedies ever made, and for good reason: it has Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in drag, Marilyn Monroe at her very best, Curtis’ Cary Grant impression, and one of the all-time great closing lines (“Nobody’s perfect!”). But it’s not just that it’s madly, uproariously funny; it’s one of those lightning-strike comedies that captured every involved party at the absolute tip-top of their game, and its cheerful acknowledgement of sexual fluidity means it’s aged better than any dozen gay-panic comedies that came much later. As a result, it’s a classic comedy that still feels fresh and funny on every rewatch. (Includes audio commentary, featurettes, archival interviews, and trailer.)

On the July 24, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film Managing Editor Jacob Hall, Weekend Editor Brad Oman, senior writer Ben Pearson and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista we’ll discuss what we’ve been up to at the Water Cooler and answer some listener mail in The Mail Bag.

In The Mail Bag:

  • Jorge Z from Australia writes in “I am 42 years old and as you all mentioned, time changes us. Not only that, having kids changes us even more. I don’t really know what my opinion would be if I was 42 with no kids. I do know that if I was 28 I would be frustrated about all of this. The point that I am trying to get to is that now having kids, even with the guy apologising, I would be very uncomfortable if I learned that he and my children were in the same room. Then I thought to myself, what about my friend with kids and my friends without kids? What do they think about it? I can tell you the the opinion of my friends without kids varied and most of them said: I don’t know what to think of this; maybe it was an overreaction. “
  • Carrie P writes in “I finished listening to your episode on the firing of James Gunn. I have been a podcast subscriber for a couple of months and enjoy and respect everyone’s opinions.  I will play devil’s advocate you sometimes do. I have been in education for 14 years and there is a federal push for teaching digital citizenship. We are doing our best to educate our students that the footprint they leave on social media can have a huge effect on their future. A lot of teenagers are fans of Marvel and James Gunn. This might be a good learning experience for them to see how comments they have made in the past can keep them from potential jobs and future successes.”
  • L from Texas writes in: “I just thought I would share some thoughts on your discussion of cleaning up after yourself in a theater. I worked in a theater for 6 years most of that time I spent as an usher. At the chain I worked at we were cross trained but each shift we were in a specific area so if you were working an usher shift you were an usher and the same goes for Box Office, Concessions and Booth.  The chain I worked at had a system for cleaning theaters, on the busy nights and days, which was called the ten step system in which if you have at least five usher working to clean a theater it would go like this.  1 – Gather all supplies 2- Turn on cleaning lights  3-2 ushers go to the top of the theater and alternate rows picking up any “big trash” your popcorn bags food containers drinks basically anything big enough to pick up and throw in the trash  4 – Clean any wet or stick spills – The big trash users would let one of the other users know that there was a need for a mop and then it would be cleaned 5- once the 2 ushers for step 3 are about 5 rows down 1 or 2 ushers with a large push broom will go down each row and get all the popcorn and other debris from under and in front of the seats  6 – 2 ushers will go down each side and sweep up the piles left by the #4 ushers and also spot check to make sure there is nothing left in the rows 7 – wipe down any seats that need it and return them to the correct position 8 – Vacuum any carpet that needs vacuuming ( we usually just had hand powered vacuums 9 – Empty the trash cans outside the theater  10 – Cleaning lights off and inform the podium the theater is ready to seat I know this was long but all this to say that if everyone would just take what ushers would consider “big trash” out with them we could eliminate an entire step here and theaters would get cleaned faster.  I will say that there is a lot of down time for ushers when it is not busy or theaters are not that busy but having been a manager as well I know that there is always something that an usher can be doing to keep the theater clean and organized and the managers can always find something for them to do while they are on the clock. So don’t worry about someone losing their job just because you took you popcorn bag out to the trash!”

Here’s why everyone at Sundance is talking about the emotionally charged movie ‘Blindspotting’ https://briefnews.eu/heres-why-everyone-at-sundance-is-talking-about-the-emotionally-charged-movie-blindspotting/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-why-everyone-at-sundance-is-talking-about-the-emotionally-charged-movie-blindspotting/#respond Sat, 20 Jan 2018 04:49:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-why-everyone-at-sundance-is-talking-about-the-emotionally-charged-movie-blindspotting/ blindspottingSundance Institute

  • “Blindspotting” is a powerful look at a race and class.
  • It stands out because of its well done use of comedy, drama, and rap.

The Sundance Film Festival is where movies that challenge the audience get their fair shake, and “Blindspotting,” the debut feature of director Carlos López Estrada, is exactly that.

The movie is a racially-charged powder keg that uses comedy, drama, and rap to give the audience a journey through the complicated lives of two friends living in West Oakland.

Colin (Daveed Diggs, who cowrote the screenplay with Estrada) is days away from completing his probation and is trying to stay on the straight-and-narrow. However, his lifelong friend Miles (Rafael Casal) is not the best influence on him as he walks around carrying a gun and always seems to get Colin involved in things that he doesn’t want to do.

The movie’s foundation is built on contrasts. Colin is black and Miles is white. West Oakland has a fan base of rowdy Oakland Raiders fans and stylish Golden State Warrior fans. The city is growing more and more gentrified. Even on the marquee of the local theater it has a unique lineup coming soon: rapper Too Short and rock band Third Eye Blind.

And it’s through these differences that Estrada lays down the struggle Colin is going through in his life. He isn’t just shackled by the label of “convicted felon,” but also the fear of the police — after he witnesses a police officer shooting an unarmed black man running from him. Then there’s his on-again-off-again girlfriend Val (Janina Gavankar), who he’s trying to show he’s changed since getting out of prison but can still see she can’t let go why he was put there. The only comfort is with his best friend Miles, who sports a gold grill and tattoos.

A lot of the movie is a fun buddy comedy with the two dealing with entertaining situations, like an Uber driver with lots of guns, trying to sell hot-irons at a beauty salon, as they navigate through Oakland.

But there’s an unspoken uneasiness about them as well, especially since Colin has gotten out of prison, that finally comes to ahead by the end of the movie. Whenever you think you’ve figured out this movie, something happens that pulls the rug right from you.

The strengths of “Blindspotting” is its commentary on race and class through the use of comedy and use of rapping in two powerful scenes. Where it falls short at times is when it becomes too dramatic. When the message is lost through raw anger.

But perhaps that was Estrada’s intention all along. To give the audience raw emotion because that’s what most of us live through every day.

“Blindspotting” is seeking distribution.
