The CW’s bonkers young adult drama keeps piling on the twists, and this week’s episode of Riverdale was no different. Fans were genuinely stumped by the latest chapter, ‘Fire in the Sky’, which seemed to confirm extraterrestrial invaders had infiltrated the town. The small town of Riverdale had yet another brush with the supernatural in the latest episode of the show’s unpredictable fifth season. After jumping ahead by seven years, Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and his friends return home in their mid-20s in hopes of restoring their old high school to its former glory. Unfortunately, the situation in the town has only gotten worse over the years, and the gang find themselves once again pulled into various conspiracies. This week’s instalment, ‘Fire in the Sky’, saw Archie volunteer at the local fire department. READ MORE: Riverdale: Archie Andrews star KJ Apa takes swipe at fans Meanwhile, Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) tries to coax Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) out of isolation, and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) uncovers yet another serial killer. Where the show may start to lose viewers is when struggling author Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) stumbles upon a mystery of his own. Fans were already gripped before the series took a two week break as the previous episode warned of a mysterious Mothman who could be stalking the town. Now the series appears to have fully embraced the supernatural as Jughead could become the victim of an alien abduction. “This Mothman thing is getting very Scooby Doo,” said one viewer. “I feel like they’re gonna unmask an alien in the finale and be like “It was Old Man Mr. Jenkins this entire time!” and explain how everything was done using magnets and holograms.” The series has certainly come close to introducing other-worldly concepts when the Gargoyle King was still in town, as well as the gang’s ordeal with Edgar Neverever (Chad Michael Murray) and the Farm. While this fan rightly pointed out that Riverdale’s latest spooky conspiracy will probably be revealed as yet another elaborate hoax, others had their doubts. Another viewer said: “On the one hand I don’t want this show to add aliens. “But on the other hand any non-alien explanation is probably gonna be dumb as all hell so I guess I’m doomed to have this show melt my brain either way.” The series remains as addictive as ever, but long-suffering fans may have to suspend their disbelief to dizzying degrees in the coming episodes once Jughead starts to investigate further. Riverdale season 5 continues Wednesday, March 17 on the CW and the following Thursday on Netflix.

Chris Hardwick has responded to allegations of sexual assault and emotional abuse by his ex-girlfriend, TV personality and host Chloe Dykstra.
“These are very serious allegations and not to be taken lightly which is why I’ve taken the day to consider how to respond,” said the AMC personality and comedian in a statement to Deadline late Friday. “I was heartbroken to read Chloe’s post. Our three-year relationship was not perfect — we were ultimately not a good match and argued — even shouted at each other — but I loved her, and did my best to uplift and support her as a partner and companion in any way and at no time did I sexually assault her.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

White House aides were mortified by President Donald Trump’s 30-minute interview with The New York Times, the contents of which dominated headlines all day Friday.
The interview published on Thursday hit on some familiar topics for Trump: the ongoing Russia investigation, his legislative achievements, and some domestic and world affairs.
The president was largely unfiltered in the one-on-one with The Times, to the chagrin of his staffers back in Washington who were reportedly caught off-guard by both the interview itself, and Trump’s musings with a reporter who was invited to speak with the president by one of Trump’s close confidants, Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy.
According to The Washington Post, the encounter rattled Trump’s White House aides, who were not present for the interview; a lapse known to cause ripple-effects due to Trump’s tendency to speak off-the-cuff in a way that invariably captures headlines worldwide.
By all accounts, White House chief of staff John Kelly has put in considerable effort to moderate access to Trump and filter the information he consumes, which is why Trump’s interview with The Times reportedly sent some Oval Office staff scrambling.
The Post’s Ashley Parker and Josh Dawsey reported that Hope Hicks, the White House communications director, got on the phone once she received word of the president’s sit-down with The Times to “check in on the interview from afar.” Another aide The Post described as “frustrated” called the interview “embarrassing.”
Trump frequently mingles with guests when visiting his private properties like Mar-a-Lago in Florida. And after a year in office, that is still a thorn in the side of those charged with monitoring the interactions of a president who is easily influenced by outside feedback.
An unnamed former White House staffer told The Post: “At Mar-a-Lago, anyone who can get within eyesight changes the game.”

The following contains spoilers from the fall finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead pulled a bite-and-switch during Season 8’s fall finale, when after getting people thinking that Lucille might have a date with someone else’s cranium, no heroes wound up stepping up to the bat.
Alas, the episode’s final moments revealed that there would be a casualty nonetheless — because Carl had been bitten by a walker in the course of transporting Siddiq.

President Donald Trump drew backlash after he did not explicitly endorse Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s founding document during his summit with NATO allies in Brussels last month — and it appears his own national security team was blindsided by it.
The article, known as the collective-defense clause, stipulates that an attack on any member is an attack on all. It was invoked for the first time in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Five sources told Politico on Monday that US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, national security adviser HR McMaster, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson worked with Trump on the speech for weeks and pushed hard for the Article 5 language to be included after viewing later drafts in which it had been taken out.
Lower-level members of Trump’s national security team, meanwhile, were reportedly completely blindsided.
“There was a fully coordinated other speech everybody else had worked on” — and it wasn’t the one Trump gave, a White House official told Politico. Another national security source told Politico that “they [the team] didn’t know it had been removed.”
“It was only upon delivery,” the person said.
Trump said in his speech that the US would “never forsake the friends that stood by our side” in the aftermath of 9/11. But he did not explicitly endorse Article 5, as every US president since Harry S. Truman has when speaking outside NATO headquarters.
Instead, Trump used the speech largely to lecture representatives from nearly two dozen member countries for not meeting their “financial obligations” to increase defense spending to 2% of their gross domestic product.
It is unclear whether Trump deleted the line of his own volition, or advisers such as Steve Bannon or Stephen Miller — both of whom view NATO with deep skepticism — pressured him to take it out.
But it is indicative of how much influence the anti-globalist faction of the White House — led by former Breitbart chairman Bannon — has over Trump, who has shown a willingness to discard the advice of his more politically experienced advisers in favor of guidance from a small group of unseasoned but loyal confidantes.
NSC spokesman Michael Anton did not dispute the account, telling Politico that Trump’s presence at the summit was an inherent show of support for Article 5.
“His continued effort to secure greater defense commitments from other nations is making our alliance stronger,” Anton said.
Anton appears to have been echoing White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who told reporters last month that Trump did not need to explicitly endorse the collective-defense clause in his speech because “the entire ceremony was called an Article 5 dedication.”
Trump’s omission left current and former NATO officials reeling, with many speculating that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be overjoyed by it.
“Putin will be thrilled at Trump’s refusal to endorse Article 5,” Tom Wright, the director of the Center on the United States and Europe and a fellow in the Project on International Order and Strategy at the Brookings Institution, said at the time. “Unimaginable under any other president.”
Nicholas Burns, who was the US ambassador to NATO under President George W. Bush, said in an interview last month that it was “a major mistake” for Trump to not “reaffirm publicly and explicitly” the US’s Article 5 commitment to NATO.
“I was the US ambassador to NATO on 9/11 and remain grateful for the unstinting support given to America by our European allies and Canada,” Burns said. “Trump is not acting like the leader of the West that all US presidents before him have been dating back to Truman.”
NATO was founded in 1949 as Europe’s answer to the Soviet Union, and the 28-member alliance continues to serve largely as a counterweight to Russia’s ambitions in eastern Europe.
Several post-Soviet states, including Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, are now NATO members. Montenegro will become a member in June.
Putin said on Friday that Russia “will think about how to eliminate this threat” if Sweden joins NATO.
“One of Putin’s aims for the past 15 years has been to erode the effectiveness of NATO and eventually to undermine it,” said Mark Kramer, program director for the Project on Cold War Studies at Harvard’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies. “Little did he realize that he would eventually have a US president who would eagerly assist this goal.”
“Some of Trump’s advisers such as James Mattis and H. R. McMaster are strong supporters of NATO, but Trump himself clearly is not,’ Kramer continued. “He praises tyrants in Saudi Arabia but can do nothing other than scold democratic allies in NATO.”
Trump’s speech at the NATO summit came on the heels of his trip to the Middle East, where he told Arab leaders he was “not here to lecture” them about human rights.
Kramer added that he doesn’t “rule out” the possibility that Trump has hastened NATO’s demise.
“In light of what Trump has said and done, no leader of a NATO country should have any confidence that he would fulfill Article 5 if, say, Estonia were to come under attack from Russia,” he said. “Trump’s successors might be able to rebuild confidence in the U.S. commitment to NATO, but I don’t rule out that the alliance will collapse before Trump leaves office. Putin’s goal will have been achieved.”

The Trump administration sent shockwaves through the historically black college community by suggesting in a statement on Friday night that a funding program for black college campuses may unconstitutionally allocate federal money on the basis of race.
A source close to the administration said that the statement “blindsided” many inside the White House, as well as in the Education Department, who have both spent significant time and energy wooing HBCUs — hoping to improve on a rocky relationship the schools had with the Obama administration.
The Friday statement on the government funding bill pointed to a longstanding program that gives funding for construction projects on the campuses of black colleges as one that allocates benefits “on the basis of race, ethnicity, and gender.” The administration, the statement said, would “treat the provisions … in a manner consistent with the requirement to afford equal protection of the laws.”
Two sources said the statement singling out black colleges had bypassed those who had worked on HBCU issues.
“The timing of this was crazy… It totally blindsided the White House domestic policy staff and all of the key players on this issue, and it subsequently blindsided the HBCU community,” said a second source with direct knowledge of the situation. “It was a tone-deaf statement,” the source said, that black colleges saw as “literally attacking not just HBCUs but Native Americans.”
The White House statement also indicated that a housing block grant program for Native Americans included in the omnibus bill might be similarly unconstitutional.
But black college groups said they were not concerned that the administration would actually pull back any funding. In a statement, Johnny Taylor, the president of the HBCU advocacy group the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, said he had received assurances that “there was absolutely no plan to eliminate or challenge this program.”
The program in question, Taylor said, does not allocate money on the basis of race, since historically black colleges also serve large numbers of white and Latino students.
The Education Department and White House advisor Omarosa Manigault, who helped push the initiative on historically black colleges, did not respond to a request for comment.

On Tuesday, the US Department of Homeland Security announced the introduction of an electronic device ban for select flights coming from 10 airports in the Middle East and Africa.
However, many of the eight affected airlines seemed to have been blindsided by the news.
With only four days to comply, it’s still uncertain how many of the carriers will be able to work out the logistics of the ban.
In addition, the thought process behind the decision and the intelligence on which the ban has been based remains unclear.
According to senior administration officials, the decision to implement these security measures is a result of intelligence showing a risk for terrorist activity involving commercial aviation.
“Evaluated intelligence indicates that terrorist groups continue to target commercial aviation and are aggressively pursuing innovative methods to undertake their attacks, to include smuggling explosive devices in various consumer items,” an official said on Monday.
Whatever this intelligence consists of, it was substantial enough for the national security apparatus to act.
Mike Nudelman/BI GraphicsAccording to James Norton, a former deputy assistant secretary of the DHS during the George W. Bush administration, security actions such as this will take place if there is evidence of a credible threat. An example of this happened in 2006 when the Bush administration issued an immediate ban on liquids after law enforcement in the UK foiled a terrorist plot to blow up airliners traveling across the Atlantic using liquid explosives, Norton told Business Insider.
However, what is confusing is that the UK issued a similar ban on Tuesday, but excluded four airports — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Casablanca — featured in the US ban.
In addition, many in the aviation community question whether a ban of this type is even remotely effective in countering a terrorist attack.
It should be noted that Doha, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi are major international transit hubs with extensive multi-layered security procedures. In addition, US-bound flights are even screened in dedicated facilities using well-trained security professionals — often with law-enforcement and military experience.
Hamad International AirportIn fact, Abu Dhabi International Airport is equipped with a US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance facility where passengers and bags headed for the US are screened by US customs officials.
First, the electronics ban is not an outright ban. Instead, it forbids electronics such as laptops, cameras and tablets from being brought into the cabin of the aircraft. This means they will most likely have to be stored inside the cargo hold of the aircraft with the checked luggage.
However, such behavior is explicitly prohibited by the Federal Aviation Administration.
“FAA battery fire testing has highlighted the potential risk of a catastrophic aircraft loss due to damage resulting from a lithium battery fire or explosion. Current cargo fire suppression systems cannot effectively control a lithium battery fire,” the agency wrote in an alert in February.
When asked, administration officials told journalists on Monday that they are working with the FAA to maintain a safe flying environment, but did not state specifics. Business Insider asked DHS for specifics on Tuesday, but have not yet heard back from officials.
This is particularly concerning for Michael Mo, co-founder and CEO of Kulr Technologies, a company that specializes thermal management systems for batteries.
“Lithium-ion batteries are inherently volatile with an average of one out of five million units expected to blow. It’s statistics. It’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when one of these things blow,” Mo told Business Insider in an interview.
“So when that happens, it’s better to have humans nearby to react and put out the fire.”
APIn addition, spare lithium-ion batteries stored in the cargo hold are particularly dangerous because not only are they more susceptible to damage, they also tend to be packed into suitcases with incredibly flammable items like hairspray or deodorant.
Of the 10 airlines affected by the US ban, three — Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways — have been at the heart of a heated rivalry with US carriers American, Delta, and United Airlines. For some, the inclusion of these airlines seem way too convenient to be a coincidence.
“If you squint hard enough, there is some justification on a security basis for this, but the implementation has been haphazard and in manner that is particularly targeted at and does harm to the commercial interests of a set of airlines that has been the source of much competitive hand-wringing from US airlines,” Airways senior business analyst Vinay Bhaskara told Business Insider.
When asked about the topic on Monday, a senior administration official denied any relationship between the electronics ban and the feud between the aforementioned American and Middle Eastern airlines.
However, the UK’s decision to exclude the Middle East’s big three from its ban proves to be particularly troubling. After all, it is believed that the UK government acted on the same intelligence as US officials.
The immediate effect of the ban will likely weaken the Persian Gulf’s three mega-carriers along with Turkish Airlines, Bhaskara said. Based on the latest rankings from respected consumer aviation website Skytrax, Emirates, Qatar, Etihad and Turkish Airlines represent the first, second, sixth, and seventh ranked carriers in the world.
Since the US government’s ban calls into question the security of their home airports, these airlines will have to contend with the resulting negative publicity and uncertainty among customers.
A new Emirates ad argues that one doesn’t need a laptop to have a good time on board its flights.
BoeingIn addition, many corporate customers do allow their employees to ship work computers in their checked luggage. This is due to concerns over theft of equipment and any sensitive information stored on the computers.
As a result, they may push some clients toward carriers that are not affected by the ban.
Currently, no US carriers offer nonstop flights into the Middle East. As a result, they won’t benefit directly. However, the ban will likely drive lucrative business travelers back towards European hubs such as Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, and Paris. This means US airlines will benefit through joint ventures and alliance relationships with Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, and KLM.
That said, not all US carriers will benefit. Airlines like JetBlue and Alaska have partnership agreements with Emirates. A reduction in business for Emirates cuts into the number of passengers who depend on JetBlue’s and Alaska’s planes to connect them to secondary and tertiary cities in the US.
Qatar AirwaysAccording to Bhaskara, the long-term effects of the ban are unknown. The strategic decisions the affected airlines and their competitors make will be determined by how long with ban is in place.
At the end of the day, it’s still too early to tell what’s going to happen. Hopefully, many of these questions will be answered as airlines and the flying public work through the many issues created by the new guidelines.
