The much-touted EnChroma glasses don’t help colorblind users see new colors; they merely let the colorblind see the same colors in a different way, according to a new study published in Optics Express by scientists at Spain’s University of Granada. The scientists liken the effect to the colored glasses often used by hunters to increase the contrast in their surroundings so they can better pick up on certain visual stimuli.

EnChroma makes glasses that are designed to help with a specific form of color blindness, one in which a hybrid of red- and green-detecting receptors confuse the differences between colors. The receptors act by blocking out the wavelengths that the hybrids are most sensitive to, but they don’t do anything for other forms of color blindness.

So the new results don’t come as a surprise to University of Washington color-vision expert Jay Neitz, who has long been skeptical about what the glasses actually accomplish. “You can’t add colors by taking away some wavelengths [of light], which is all the glasses do,” he says.

Eating leafy green kale could reduce the risk of developing AMD.

Kale is rich in the antioxidant lutein, which is needed for healthy eyes.

Lutein could dramatically reduce the number of severe AMD cases, research has revealed.

The antioxidant, which is also found in spinach, carrots, broccoli and eggs, could also be taken as a supplement to reduce the risk of developing AMD.

Medical nutritionist and GP, Dr Sarah Brewer, said: “Lutein is a vitamin-like carotenoid produced by plants, which contributes to the colour of some fruit and vegetables, such as sweetcorn, orange and yellow peppers and the bright yellow of egg yolk.

“The body cannot make this antioxidant pigment itself, so eating a diet that is rich in lutein is vital as it is needed for healthy eyes.

“Dark green leaves such as kale and spinach are also good sources, as are eggs, but if you don’t eat these regularly lutein supplements are available.”

Brewer’s comments came after a 2015 study revealed both lutein and the antioxidant zeaxanthin played a role in reducing the risk of AMD.

The study investigated the effects of lutein supplements on AMD development.

Patients taking either 10mg or 20mg of lutein supplements, over a 48-week period, saw a significant rise in retinal sensitivity.

A separate study revealed taking daily supplements of lutein (10mg) and zeaxanthin (2mg) for five years reduced the risk of AMD developing by between 10 and 25 per cent.

Brewer said: “It’s great news that simply taking a supplement may prevent AMD, which is one of the leading causes of blindness in later life.

“It interferes greatly with quality of life, too, as loss of central vision means you can’t read a book or newspaper.

“These studies are convincing and this is a supplement that I intend to start taking.”

AMD is a condition that causes patients to lose their central vision.

Vision becomes blurry when looking straight ahead, and becomes increasingly worse.

There is currently no cure for AMD, according to the NHS.

They are a thin, curved lens that is designed to sit on a film of tears covering the surface of the eye.

In the UK there are approximately three million users.

There are a number of options for wearers, including lenses worn for one day or a month, and hard or soft.

However, using them doesn’t come without its risks, and, according to the NHS, many people don’t use them safely.

Indeed, it was reported earlier this week that a 67-year-old woman had to have 27 contact lenses removed from her eye.

According to the British Medical Journal, they had stuck together to form a large mass which was spotted during routine cataract surgery.

While this was an extreme case, it’s not unusual.

“It isn’t uncommon for a contact lens wearer to arrive at their optometrist’s practice early on in the morning having forgotten or been unable to remove a contact lens late on the previous evening,” said Brendan O’Brien, COO of Vision Direct.

The NHS recommends that neither extended wear contact lenses – which can be worn continuously for a period of time – or daily wear contact lenses should be worn overnight.

O’Brien warned: “Wearing lenses which are not designed for extended wear overnight can lead to infections, corneal ulcers, and other health problems that can cause permanent vision loss. 

“Contact lenses reduce the much-needed supply of oxygen to the cornea, or the surface of your eye. 

“Normally, the cornea gets oxygen both from blood vessels in the eyelid at night and from the air during the day. 

“A regular contact lens user relies on the night-time supply to keep the eye healthy, so cutting off night-time oxygen can be devastating.”

Indeed, according to the British Contact Lens Association the already high risk of infection from wearing them during the day is much higher if they’re slept in.

If you don’t know whether you’ve left a lens in or not, possibly because it’s slipped off the centre of the eye, you can look for certain signs.

O’Brien explained: “The first and most obvious is discomfort. 

“The other is that if you wake up and can see without putting on your glasses, you should make sure you haven’t forgotten to remove your lenses the previous evening.”
