Netflix warned fans of the new thriller Bird Box not to injure themselves trying to imitate the characters in the film by performing everyday acts while blindfolded. But did they invent the “Bird Box challenge” to begin with?

As the #BirdBoxChallenge went viral on Twitter, Netflix hastily reminded Bird Box fans not to injure themselves while cavorting around blindfolded like the characters in the film. Netflix, it seemed, had naively assumed people who subscribed to a streaming video service and watched dozens of films per month didn’t need to be reminded not to try the stunts at home. Sadly, they were wrong.

The “Bird Box challenge” dares fans to attempt everyday acts while blindfolded like Sandra Bullock’s character in the film. Marooned in a post-apocalyptic wilderness with two young children, she must cross a river and forest full of supernatural creatures that will cause her to commit suicide if she looks at them. Their blindfolds are all that protects the trio from certain death.

Things work a bit differently in real life, as fans soon found out…

As if it wasn’t dangerous enough to walk around blindfolded, some people added heavy artillery to the mix.

But most of the mentions seemed to be people mocking challenge participants…

…many of whom mentioned Tide pods.

And at least one person figured out that the Bird Box challenge was actually…an advertising campaign.

Netflix boasted last week that Bird Box was downloaded by a record-breaking 45 million accounts in its first seven days online, sparking furious debate over the future relevance of movie theatres in a world where a film most people hadn’t even heard of til it appeared on their Netflix accounts can rival big budget blockbusters in a hypothetical box-office matchup (one industry analyst calculated the film’s earnings – if it had been released conventionally – at about $ 700 million for the week, while superhero film du jour Aquaman had only grossed $ 629 million as of last week).

The Sandra Bullock-fronted thriller is about a mysterious presence roaming the Earth, and anyone who stares directly at it is somehow driven to commit suicide. The survivors of the initial outbreak figure out how to make it through: they have to roam around wearing blindfolds. It’s a great, incredibly dramatic element of the film – but surely it was difficult to shoot?

In a new interview, director Susanne Bier has recalled how it was all put together.

“They were wearing blindfolds, and Sandra Bullock was hitting trees, hitting the cameras and, at one point, getting a proper wound,” she told Radio Times.

“But she had trained with somebody who teaches blind people how to navigate – how to, through sound, figure out distances – so she had training in how to move around without looking.

“Still, with the speed and everything, it was kind of nerve-wracking, but we wanted it to have a feeling of being very real. Which it did.”

She added: “I don’t think it necessarily takes longer, but it puts pretty huge strain on one’s sense of harmony or one’s calm.

“The steady cam operator had to start with Sandra every day kind of moving around, anticipating her next move and trying to be out of the way. But it was pretty exciting.”

In the same interview, Bier had explained why we never see the horrifying monsters.

“The creatures mess with your mind; they tap into your deepest fear. And, because they tap into your deepest fear, we can’t ever see them, because that deepest fear is going to be different whoever you are,” she reasoned.

“For me, the most exciting point in any thriller has always been that point right before you see the monster, right before you see the villain. That has always been the most frightening, and I wanted the whole movie to have that atmosphere.

“To be completely honest, every time I see a monster in a movie I kind of go, ‘Is that all?’”

Bird Box, which is based on a novel, also stars Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich and Trevante Rhodes.

Bird Box is now streaming on Netflix.

An Indian family of 11 has been found dead in New Delhi, with 10 members blindfolded and hanging from a ceiling. Initial reports indicate a twisted spiritual mass suicide attempt, but police aren’t discounting other possibilities.

The bodies of seven women and four men were discovered in the Burari suburb of the Indian capital on Sunday by their neighbor, who called the police in shock over what he has witnessed.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered 10 blindfolded bodies, with cotton stuffed in their ears, hanging from an iron grille in the home’s courtyard, suspended by cables and ‘chunnis’ (scarves with religious motifs), local media report. The body of an 11th person, reportedly in her seventies, was found strangled and lying on the floor of the house.

The victims, which police say belonged to a single family, are believed to have committed a mass religious suicide, as authorities failed to discover any forced entry, gunshot wounds, or anything that would clearly indicate a homicide.

Instead, according to reports, law enforcement discovered handwritten notes, which indicated that the family had meticulously prepared for the “mass salvation” and had carefully examined ways of hanging themselves. No suicide notes were found at the scene. Only a dog inside the house survived the mass murder.

Based on the evidence, the victims were in “observance of some definite spiritual or mystical practices,” police said in a statement, according to AP. “Coincidentally, these notes have strong similarity with the manner in which the mouths, eyes, etc. of the deceased were tied and taped,” the statement added.

While police await the autopsy reports on the victims, including two 15-year-old boys, authorities have not discounted homicide as a possible cause of death. Treating the incident as a murder case, law enforcement teams are now analyzing call records from the victims’ mobiles for possible clues and are interviewing witnesses. “It is still too early (to know what happened). It is an ongoing investigation and we haven’t ruled out anything,” a police source told AFP.

According to one version of the events, shared with India Today by an anonymous police source, the mass suicide unfolded after family members were served sedatives with their dinner. Then at least one of the family allegedly proceeded to blindfold the rest of the unconscious victims before hanging them.

Before it all went 50 shades of grey, Paddy (played by Dominic Brunt) had taken Marlon Dingle’s (Mark Charnock) former date Lindsey out for a calm meal in the Woolpack.

But things soon took an erotic turn when Paddy decided to take Lindsey to his vet practice for some quality alone time.

As Paddy said some medical definitions to his date, Lindsey became all hot and bothered and admitted to him: “You’re dead sexy when you say that, I love medical words.”

The flustered brunette then made a move on Paddy and grabbed a dog collar to tie him to a rabbit cage.

As he stood with his arms attached to the cage, Lindsey also blindfolded the soap favourite who thought he was in for a fun night.

However, things turned sour when Lindsey went through his phone and found he had sent Marlon a picture of the two of them together to wind him up.

And the hilarity didn’t end there as when she abandoned him still tied to the cage, Paddy proceeded to drink from the rabbit’s animal water bottle.

Fans of the ITV soap immediately flocked to Twitter to share their comments on the amusing scene.

One person wrote: “Paddy tied to a cage by a dog collar, drinking the water for the rabbit, just the laugh I needed.”

Another said: “Paddy’s found himself in quite a dilemma! At least he has the rabbit’s water bottle to keep him hydrated. #Emmerdale.”

“50 shades of Paddy Kirk #Emmerdale,” joked a viewer, while a third added: “Ooh, Paddy! Get in there. LOL! #Emmerdale.”
