When I first saw Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are, I cried through almost the entire film. That said, the mixed reception it received didn’t surprise me. Its intended audience — to my mind, at least — didn’t dovetail with the market it was being sold to; despite being based on a children’s book, it wasn’t a movie meant for kids. It was a story about growing up told by someone who already had, and told to someone of the same age.
All of this to say: I thought about Where the Wild Things Are at a few points throughout Disney’s most recent outing to the Hundred Acre Wood, Christopher Robin, directed by Marc Forster, which exists somewhere between being geared for kids and geared for adults. But Christopher Robin is a much stranger creature (in the best possible way as it is singularly lovely) – it features frankly devastating stretches of melancholy and refuses to make any easy prescription for the anxieties of adulthood, all of which is punctuated by comic moments that range from being deliriously funny to tonal misfires. That imbalance isn’t, however, something I’m inclined to hold against the film. Its messiness works for it.
On paper, the story is fairly predictable. Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) hasn’t been back to the Hundred Acre Wood since he was a young boy, and in the interim, has lost his creative spark and lust for life. He barely sees his wife and daughter (Hayley Atwell and Bronte Carmichael, respectively), so concerned is he with his work. And then, as things start to look particularly dire, like an even more benevolent Christmas Carol, Winnie the Pooh (Jim Cummings) comes to visit.
Though McGregor, Atwell, and Carmichael are undeniably appealing presences, the film’s success hinges on the little bear. Redesigned — or perhaps retro-designed — to more closely resemble E.H. Shepard’s original illustrations, Pooh is almost painfully cute, and Cummings’ vocal performance is (as always) pitch-perfect. There’s a pleasingly ponderous quality to the bear that can seamlessly shift from sweetness to sadness, and it’s that grounding that gives Christopher Robin the heft that it might otherwise lack.
The film’s opening, which features the young Christopher Robin’s farewell party, is filled with warm colors that slowly drain away after the boy leaves. Time fast-forwards through mock chapters that draw the characters in and out of illustrations before depositing us into Christopher Robin’s adulthood in post-war Britain. Unfortunately, that change in color also affects the Hundred Acre Wood. Christopher Robin has forgotten about his childhood companions despite promising that he never would, and the result is desolation.
Watching Pooh wander through a deserted Hundred Acre Wood was affecting to me as an adult to the degree that I wonder how it would have struck me as a child. That kind of yearning, which mixes happiness and sadness, is difficult to wrestle with, and yet underlies the entire film. There are touches of it in the score (composed by Geoff Zanelli and Jon Brion) as well as in the frankly Malick-ian quality of the outdoor scenes. (There is literally a shot of Pooh’s paw brushing through wild grass.) None of it is typical for a kid’s movie, nor does it quite fit with the more slapstick aspects of the film that seem to be intended to balance it out.
I might be more inclined to complain if it didn’t feel of a kin with Christopher Robin’s struggle to balance his personal and professional lives. Speaking as broadly as possible so as not to spoil the end of the film, Christopher Robin doesn’t take the usual, prescribed route out. It’s always been one of my pet peeves when films suggest that abandoning all security and taking a leap of faith is the only way of achieving happiness, and this film seems to realize that it’s a lie. A leap of faith is still a risk, and the personal sacrifice that is sometimes necessary for security might be what’s needed. Finding a happy medium is difficult, but at least Christopher Robin tries.
And all that aside, it’s just a very charming movie. Brad Garrett also stands out in the voice cast as Eeyore, embodying a constant self-deprecating depression that I think any viewer into or past their teenage years will find all too familiar. The bit players are also a murderer’s row of England’s finest comic actors, including Paul Chahidi as a gregarious neighbor, and the trio of Matt Berry, Mackenzie Crook, and Simon Farnaby (last seen in the other big bear movie, Paddington 2) in one of the movie’s most delightful human-centric scenes.
Not all of the film’s quirks are given a proper resolution — as it turns out, Pooh’s walking and talking is visible to everyone and not just a figment of Christopher Robin’s imagination, leading to the film’s longest (and possibly best) gag but also questions as to the fabric of reality — but they don’t need to be. It has an honest emotional landscape, which is what ultimately matters.

The Audi A4 is perhaps the most well-rounded car in the entry-luxury sedan segment, thanks to its compelling combination of athletic performance, a comfortable and well-built interior, high-tech features, and handsome exterior design. It excels in almost all areas of our testing, outaccelerates its rivals while sipping fuel, and cocoons its occupants in a quiet, spacious, and well-appointed cabin. The suspension admirably walks the thin line between sport and comfort, providing valiant cornering confidence when pushed hard and a relaxed experience when cruising long distances. Throw in a smattering of cutting-edge technology by way of the optional digital gauge cluster, onboard Wi-Fi, and advanced active safety tech, and the A4’s myriad qualities elevate it to near the top of its class. Its appearance may be unassuming, but make no mistake: in the entry-luxury class, the A4 is a superhero in street clothes. READ MORE ››

If a folklorist drank an entire bottle of cough syrup, passed out and had their fever dreams somehow captured on film, the result might look something like November. This gorgeous Estonian fantasy-drama-horror-something from director Rainer Sarnet defies classification, and must be seen to be believed. Feast your eyes on the visually stunning November trailer below.
What is November? It’s a lot of things: a gorgeous black and white fantasy film; a recreation of some unsettling folklore; a movie full of magic and horror. Yet running down a list of descriptions still isn’t enough to adequately describe November, a new film from Rainer Sarnet, soon to be released by Oscilloscope Laboratories. I watched November a few months ago, and I’m still not quite sure what to make of it. But don’t take my word for it, take a look at the trailer and see for yourself.
Do you want to know how weird this movie is? Here’s an example: in the first five minutes alone, a sort-of-demon made out of various farm tools, with a cow skull for a head, bursts into a barn and steals a cow. The demon uses its various tool-limbs as helicopter blades, and flies above the landscape, towing the cow with it. November only gets weirder from there. Here’s the synopsis:
In this tale of love and survival in 19th century Estonia, peasant girl Liina longs for village boy Hans, but Hans is inexplicably infatuated by the visiting German baroness that possesses all that he longs for. For Liina, winning Hans’ requited love proves incredibly complicated in this dark, harsh landscape where spirits, werewolves, plagues, and the devil himself converge, where thievery is rampant, and where souls are highly regarded, but come quite cheap. With alluring black and white cinematography, Rainer Sarnet vividly captures these motley lives as they toil to exist—is existence worth anything if it lacks a soul?
While there are horror elements on display in November, I don’t know if I’d classify it as a horror movie. Honestly, I don’t know what I’d classify this movie as; it’s an enigma. That said, November is one of the best looking films I’ve seen in a while, with gorgeous, stark black and white cinematography that will take your breath away. The film stars Rea Lest, Jörgen Liik, Arvo Kukumägi, Katariina Unt and Taavi Eelmaa.
November opens theatrically in New York City on February 23, 2018, and in Los Angeles on March 2, 2018. Try to see it on the big screen; you won’t regret it.

Writer/Director Rawson Marshall Thurber was on a Television Critics Association panel for his new YouTube comedy series Ryan Hanson Solves Crimes on Television. After the panel, he spoke with /Film about his upcoming film projects. He’ll make Skyscraper with Dwayne Johnson next, but he’s still attached to a remake of The Cannonball Run.
“Cannonball is about to be written by Tom Lennon and Ben Garant, so we’ll see if that comes in,” Thurber said. “If it comes together, I’d love to go make that.”
The two Cannonball Run movies were madcap all-star comedies about drivers in a wacky race, with a cast that included Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore and Jackie Chan. While we live in an age where auto stunts have gotten so extreme that many fans legitimately hope The Fast and the Furious goes into space, Thurber said the new Cannonball could benefit from those stunts, but won’t be another Fast and the Furious movie.
“I think we’re living in a post or current Fast and Furious world,” Thurber said. “So I don’t think Cannonball can out-Fast and Furious the Fast and the Furious. That’s its own thing, but we definitely want to harness that with the fun of Oceans 11 and put those together. It’ll have to be a different thing than Fast, but should have some great car action, obviously.”
But first there’s Skyscraper, starring Dwayne Johnson, which shoots in a week. “I flew in just for this and we start shooting a week from Monday,” Thurber said. “After that, with any luck, it’ll be season two of this if it works. Right now I’m focused on Skyscraper with Dwayne.”
Thurber confirmed that Skyscraper is essentially Die Hard…in a building. “Yes, it’s exactly Die Hard in a building,” Thurber said. “Die Hard’s one of my all time favorite films and it owes a lot to Die Hard of course, but also Towering Inferno, Cliffhanger, a few other pictures.”
The original Die Hard was so successful, other movies became described as “Die Hard in a…” So Under Siege was Die Hard on a boat, Passenger 57 was Die Hard on a plane and Speed was Die Hard on a bus. “There was a great comedy script out there called Die Hard in a Building,” Thurber said. “It made the rounds. It was never going to get made. It was mostly a good joke.”
Johnson’s last film with Thurber, Central Intelligence, was a comedy that poked fun at his heroic image. Thurber intends Skyscraper to be a straight action movie.
“Unless I mess it up, it’s not going to be funny,” Thurber said. “It’ll have moments of levity like Die Hard does, but it’s a straight action picture. I was editing Central Intelligence and I came up with the idea and I called up Dwayne. I pitched it to him and he said, ‘I love it. I’m in.’ and that was it. It originated with me, but he wanted to do it and we’re off.”
A sequel to the Thurber-directed comedy We’re the Millers is still in the works. The script is done, but reuniting the cast is challenging.
“We have a great script from Adam Sztykiel, who created Undatable and just wrote Rampage for Dwayne,” Thurber said. “I think it’s just a scheduling issue. Jen [Aniston] and Jason [Sudeikis], it’s tough to get everybody and now Emma [Roberts] is a success and Will Poulter. It’s just about getting everybody together.”
Thurber fit the pilot to Ryan Hanson Solves Crimes On Television right between Central Intelligence and Skyscraper. “I finished Central and that came out,” he said. “Then I wrote this and managed to get it green lit right before I went to go prep Skyscraper.”
Ryan Hanson Solves Crimes On Television, starring Ryan Hanson as himself and Samira Wiley, premieres this fall on YouTube Red.

Netball: Sunshine Coast Lightning have come from behind to earn their grand final berth, in a thrilling finish against minor premiers, the Melbourne Vixens.

THE licence to thrill and the experience to chill.
Sunshine Coast star Caitlin Bassett says that is the double-barrelled key to success for the Lightning in their march to the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball grand final on June 17.
The Sunshine Coast will host the decider at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall after their nailbiting 56-55 major semi-final win over the Melbourne Vixens on Saturday.
They will play the winner of this Saturday’s preliminary final between the Vixens and GWS in netball’s season showpiece.
Goalshooter Bassett was named MVP of the ferocious major semi-final after hitting 44 goals from 47 attempts despite being battered and bruised by the physical Vixens defence.

When the game was on the line in the tense final term, the more experienced Lightning line-up was too smart and too strong.
The Sunshine Coast starting seven had a combined total of 381 Tests caps compared to Melbourne’s 82 Test caps. The average age of the Lightning side was 28-years-old, four years older than Melbourne.
FINALS: Vixens must take long route to GF
Bassett said that experience was priceless along with the trust that Lightning coaching staff put in their players to make decisions on-court.
“We are a really mature bunch and we have a common goal and that is to win the premiership,’’ Bassett said.
“We do have experience and we are all individuals in our own right and we are given a licence to play how we want to.

“It’s really good when you are not being told to play a certain way. We adapt and adjust and just bring out the best in each other. We didn’t spend a lot of time together in the pre-season but we have only grown across the year.
“It means so much to have that experience especially when a game is going down to the wire.
“It’s all about the players who settle the quickest, who are smartest with the ball and know what to do and when to do it.’’
The Lightning received a heroine’s welcome when they arrived home yesterday but it will quickly be back to business.
In an ominous warning for GWS or the Vixens, Bassett said the Lightning still had not put together the perfect performance in their inaugural year.
“I still don’t think you’ve seen the best 60 minutes of netball from us which is actually exciting,’’ Bassett said.

“We’ve got one more chance to bring it out and two weeks to work on doing that.
“We have opportunities to really put the foot down but we waste it. I’m sure that will come up in the video analysis this week.’’
Bassett said the Lightning were driven by the memories of the 11-goal thumping at the hands of the Vixens in Round 10 and were able to finish over the top of the minor premiers.
“We really clicked into gear that last quarter. We were so disappointed the last time we played them. It was a heavy loss and we knew we were capable of better,’’ she said.
“The preparation we had leading into the game, we felt we were in the right head space to get out there and have a good game.
“We took a lot of confidence from knowing our defensive end would come up with clutch plays when we needed them.’’
Tickets for the grand final go on sale for Lightning members on Thursday and Friday. The general public can purchase tickets from Tuesday, June 13.

Humanitarian situation worsens, as fighting approaches more densely populated areas of the city.
“So far today [Tuesday], we have around 300 displaced people – men and women and children,” Iraqi Brigadier General Salman Hashem told AFP, speaking only about one checkpoint.
With the support of the US-led coalition, Iraqi forces began the operation to retake western part of Mosul from Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] on February 19. Government forces have recaptured several areas on the southern outskirts of the city, including the international airport area, an army base, and two southern neighborhoods.
Some 16,500 people have been displaced during these advances, and only 8,800 of them have so far been distributed among camps and emergency sites, according to OCHA. Many of the refugees are forced to sleep in the desert during their escape from the besieged city and arrive at emergency sites “exhausted and dehydrated.”
“They’re coming to us after days without food,” Hashem said.
The escaping civilians also become twin targets; for coalition airstrikes and IS jihadists, who deliberately shell and snipe the fleeing residents.
“We were hungry all the time… Our families and children were starving as well we could not get out because of the airstrikes and the mortar attacks,” a displaced man from Mosul told RT.
The situation in the besieged neighborhoods is reportedly disastrous, with soaring food prices. A serious shortage of basic supplies also means that even if you have cash, in some parts of the city, money cannot buy anything. Some refugees claimed that they had to leave behind bodies of their relatives who had died from hunger at their homes.
“There was nothing to buy. You have money but what can you do, eat money?” an elderly man, who escaped western Mosul told Reuters.
The ongoing battle will inevitably result in further civilian casualties, believes political analyst Chris Bambery. “We keep hearing of a breakthrough, but clearly there’s no sign that this battle is going to come to an end. It’s dragged far longer than the Iraqi government and the Americans have believed it would. It’s becoming a very serious war of attrition which can create very bad civilian casualties,” he told RT.
“We are talking about a potentially very serious humanitarian disaster,” Bambery stressed. So far only 85,000 more people can be housed within prepared emergency camps and shelters, while some 400,000 civilians can potentially flee the battle zone as the offensive continues, according to UN estimates.
UN’s humanitarian partners have prepositioned various assets to help displaced civilians, namely 41,700 tents, 49,000 kits of “basic household items,” and 77,000 “emergency shelter kits.” Despite such preparations, the situation remains quite “challenging,” OCHA said.
Even though humanitarian organizations have enough place to allocate refugees so far, the housing process goes quite slowly, as Iraqi security forces thoroughly screen the arriving civilians, especially men.
“There are more coming. They’re stopped at a checkpoint when they arrive and separated. The men are searched and then checked against a database,” Hashem said.
Security forces expect IS members, especially non-combatants and those who did not hold any public positions, to try and mix with the refugees to slip out of the besieged city, an Iraqi intelligence officer told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Security forces rely on databases of known IS members, local informants, and their own professional flair.
“We have a mechanism. We have names and sources but even so, we don’t know all of them. But there are people who cooperate; most of them are cooperative,” the intelligence officer said. “You can tell because [fleeing IS members] are afraid. Those who are not Daesh are also afraid but it’s different from the fear of those who are with Daesh.”
Up to 6,000 IS militants could be inside Mosul, according to Iraqi military’s estimates cited at the start of operations, Reuters reported. Iraqi army commanders claimed that some 3,300 have been killed in the battle for Mosul’s outskirts and the eastern part of the city so far.
