Football icon Diego Maradona has been discharged from hospital in Buenos Aires, where he was admitted earlier on Friday with internal bleeding. The 58-year-old all-time-great underwent several checks, his lawyer said. The news of Maradona’s stint in hospital has sparked concerns among fans for the Argentine football legend, known for his extravagant lifestyle and fragile health. Maradona was released the same day later after undergoing some tests, that reportedly included endoscopy. Maradona’s daughter, Dalma, tweeted that her father was doing okay and “is going home soon.” “For those who were really worried about my dad I can tell you that he is well,” she wrote. Reuters reported, citing a source, that Maradona’s health predicament was not serious and posed no danger to the World Cup winner’s life. Maradona was holidaying in Argentina and was scheduled to arrive in Mexico by Saturday, where he has been coaching second division Mexican team Dorados de Sinaloa since 2018. It was expected that Maradona would appear at the first game of his side this season on Saturday. The worrying news came shortly after Maradona’s agent Matias Morla confirmed that the legendary midfielder would coach the team for a second season. Health problems have been plaguing Maradona since he retired in 1997. During a dramatic World Cup match between Argentina and Nigeria in Russia, this June, Maradona felt unwell and was assisted from his seat and treated for low blood pressure. Maradona then assured fans that he was merely suffering from a bad neck. In 2000, Maradona suffered a heart attack due to a cocaine overdose, and another one in 2004. In 2007, he checked in at a rehabilitation clinic struggling with alcohol abuse. Think your friends would be interested? Share this story!

The Bleeding Edge: The latest from the Hunting Ground and Invisible War team of Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering leans a bit too hard on the tropes of the activist documentary, and some of the filmmaking is a little dodgy. But the story they’re telling and the information they’re imparting is vital enough to render those concerns secondary. Their focus this time is the medical device industry, and the alarming lack of regulation over it; there was no FDA control of devices until 1976, we’re told, and the loophole of “pre-market approval” – in which new devices can be grandfathered in if they’re similar enough to previous ones, no matter how safe those devices proved to be – is an exception that’s become the rule 98% of the time. The Bleeding Edge alternates that history with the stories of those who are suffering under the side effects of a handful of poorly tested devices, and their descriptions of their conditions are visceral, scary, and horrifying; The Bleeding Edge is hard to watch, and harder still to ignore.
Ex Machina: Annihilation screenwriter/director Alex Garland’s debut feature is the smashing story of a tech millionaire who becomes Dr. Frankenstein to a presumptive dream woman, and it’s the kind of movie they don’t really make anymore, except when they do: a science fiction movie (and one with robots and labs and computers and so on) that’s also a chatty discussion of provocative ideas, as well as a penetrating and complicated character study. Garland’s fiercely intelligent work challenges our notions of protagonists, identity, and identification — and, y’know, it’s got that dance scene too.

Mississippi Grind: Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds turn in two of their best performances to date in this rich homage to busted-out gambler movies like California Split and The Gambler. Mendelsohn is a bad luck case who’s thousands in the hole, until he meets Reynolds’ smooth talker and finds him something of a good luck charm. They hit the road for a big game down South, picking up games and colorful characters along the way; the blues-heavy soundtrack is a winner, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (currently at work on Captain Marvel) invest every stop along the way with its own distinctive atmosphere, and the dynamic between the two leads oscillates smoothly between affection and exhaustion.

The Glass Castle: Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton and star Brie Larson reunite for this 2017 adaptation of Janette Walls’s memoir, mining (a bit more successfully) material similar to the previous year’s Captain Fantastic: it’s the story of a large, rambling family, led by an off-the-grid dreamer whose high ideals don’t always equal healthy parenting. The key difference is that Glass Castle doesn’t lionize its father figure; he’s wildly irresponsible and a hopeless alcoholic, and Cretton’s tight-fisted direction harrowingly dramatizes both the up/down whiplash of recovery and relapse, and the scary way domestic incidents can escalate in a blink. Woody Harrelson is dazzlingly good as the flawed patriarch, and Brie Larson navigates several tricky moments as the focal offspring. Glass Castle has its problems – the flashback material is far more compelling than the later narrative that’s framing it (aka the Fried Green Tomatoes Conundrum), and the metaphorical qualities of key scenes (and the title) are just right on the nose. It’s the kind of movie where you can hear the gears turning, but it’s so well-acted and sensitively mounted, you may not mind. (Also streaming on Hulu.)

The Seventh Seal / Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey: It’s delightful enough that Peter Hewitt’s uproarious (and underrated) follow-up to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is available on FilmStruck, a platform best known for black-and-white classics and the Criterion Collection. But the logic is sound: it’s paired, as one of their series of ongoing “Friday Night Double Features,” with Ingmar Bergman’s Seventh Seal, best remembered for the iconic images of the chess game with Death. Bogus Journey pays loving homage to that sequence, and one-ups it, with our heroes challenging Death to a round of Battleship.

Tully: The Young Adult team of star Charlize Theron, director Jason Reitman, and screenwriter Diablo Cody reteam for this tough yet funny comedy/drama, which captures the exhaustion and desperation of parenthood (and, more specifically, the immediate postpartum period) with a verisimilitude I’ve never seen onscreen. Theron plays a mother who’s just given birth to her third child; Mackenzie Davis is the “night nanny,” hired by a rich sibling (Mark Duplass), to come in and help her get some much-needed rest. “I’m just not used to people doing things for me,” she says, and you believe her; what happens next is unexpected, sometimes awkward, and often uproariously funny. It’s a poignant piece of work that taps into the inherent helplessness of raising children, while taking some genuine (and thrilling) narrative risks.

Ryanair flight FR7312 was flying from Dublin to Zadar in Croatia when the incident occurred.
A loss of pressure in the cabin meant the plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Frankfurt airport.
Oxygen masks fell as the plane descended thousands of feet, dropping 26,000 feet in just seven minutes according to flight tracking website Flight Radar.
According to Sky News, German police explained that 33 of the passengers out of 189 were taken to the hospital.
Some suffered from bleeding ears due to the loss of pressure, and others decided not to carry on with their journey.
Passenger Sarah McGarry told the Irish Times: “We get on the plane, we’re flying and next of all the oxygen mask comes down, we’re left in darkness for 15 minutes, there’s no reassurance just people shouting ’emergency, emergency’.
“There was a newborn baby and children on the flight, people are screaming and we don’t know what’s going on for 15 minutes.”
Another passenger said: “It was really scary, there were three to four minutes (that felt like an hour) when the plane was falling fast and I thought we were done for.”
Other passengers blamed the airline for not taking care of them after the incident.
A lack of food was noted, with a Twitter user saying only 100 McDonalds burgers arrived for 189 passengers in the morning.
Others said they had to sleep at the airport on the floor or with military camp beds.
Mrs McGarry declined medical treatment as she stated that she was not guaranteed she could make her replacement flight if travelling to the hospital.
She was one of the passengers who suffered with eardrum problems afterwards.
A Ryanair spokesman said: “Customers were provided with refreshment vouchers and hotel accommodation was authorised, however there was a shortage of available accommodation.”
Ryanair told Express.co.uk: “This flight from Dublin to Zadar (13 July) diverted to Frankfurt Hahn due to an inflight depressurisation. In line with standard procedure, the crew deployed oxygen masks and initiated a controlled descent.
“The aircraft landed normally and customers disembarked, where a small number received medical attention as a precaution.
“Customers were provided with refreshment vouchers and hotel accommodation was authorised, however there was a shortage of available accommodation.
“Customers boarded a replacement aircraft which departed to Zadar the following morning and Ryanair sincerely apologised for any inconvenience.”
Another flight this week was forced into an emergency landing after an Air China pilot attempted to vape in the cockpit.
Despite trying to turn on the air ventilation, he instead turned off the air conditioning.
This meant the oxygen levels were lowered, triggering an alarm and a drop from 6,000m to 3,000m as oxygen masks fell.
An investigation has been launched as it is currently illegal to smoke e-cigarettes on a plane.
No-one was injured during the flight.

Poor vision and unhealthy eyes affect half of premature children, it’s been revealed.
Eyes continue to grow for about the first 20 years of our lives, so vision problems could continue for many years after birth.
Ieva Bikulica, 30, was born six weeks premature, and was heavily short-sighted. She suffered from an abnormal blood vessel formation in her eye, which caused her eyes to bleed.
But, a three minute-long laser eye treatment “changed her life”.
“In general, children – whether premature or not – who are short sighted at a young age, or from birth, end up with severe short sight as they progress to adults,” said Opetegra Eye Hospital’s Consultant eye surgeon, Alex Shortt.
“On top of this, if a child is born prematurely, eye growth is affected and the eye can end up longer than normal eyes, which also means the child is short sighted.
“Premature babies also often have bleeding in the eye, as Ieva did, as the blood vessels within the eyes have not properly formed.
“These can often be accompanied by haemorrhages in the brain which can cause great disability, but in Ieva’s case, she thankfully escaped without that but the bleeding in her eye led to scar tissue in the eyes at the time of birth.”
Bikulica was told she’d always need to wear glasses or contact lenses.
But, a three-minute laser eye treatment cured her strong, -6/-6.5 prescription.
The ‘SMILE’ treatment was provided through keyhole surgery, and there’s no period of blurry vision after the procedure.
The treatment could provide hope to prematurely-born children everywhere, said Shortt.
Bikulica added: “I felt almost blind really, I just could not do anything without glasses.
“I was worried I would shake during the procedure, but within minutes it was done, I could not feel a thing, and opened my eyes to be able to see the numbers on the wall clock – for the first time in my whole life.”
Any sight loss should be checked by an optometrist, according to the NHS.
See a doctor if you struggle to judge the depth of steps or curbs, or if straight lines look wobbly.
VISION loss includes difficult reading, driving at night, or seeing washed out colours. This woman was cured of her sight problems – including bleeding from the eye – with this quick treatment.![]()
To put this in terms readers not intimately familiar with Ducati’s history can relate to, the controversial move to a V4 is akin to Porsche’s abandonment of air-cooled engines, or the electrification of hypercars. The 1,103-cc V4 shares a layout with Ducati’s exotic MotoGP race bike. Unlike the more conventional 180-degree crankshaft found on V4-powered bikes such as the Aprilia RSV4, the Ducati employs a 70-degree crank pin offset and a twin-pulse firing pattern that makes it run like two back-to-back V-twins, firing with a 1-2 pulse along one bank, a brief pause, then another 3-4 pulse. Close your eyes, and it sounds bit like a Ducati V-twin, but with a slightly less irregular and staccato rhythm. The sound is deep, bold and familiar — related, but not exactly the same.
To be fair, there have been V4 Ducatis, but they weren’t production models: the limited-production Desmosedici RR (which was essentially a road-legal spinoff of the 2007 season MotoGP bike) and the 1960s-era Apollo prototype (an ill-fated would-be Harley-killer, of which only two were built).
The powerplant’s unique features, such as a counter-rotating crankshaft that reduces the gyroscopic effect of moving parts to help the bike corner while reducing the tendency to wheelie, are also derived from the company’s MotoGP bikes. All in all, the new V4 produces 214 horsepower (or a stunning 226 hp with the optional Akrapovic race exhaust), and 91.5 lb-ft of torque at the crank.

For some automotive perspective, that’s nearly double the power-to-weight ratio of a La Ferrari, bringing this motorcycle’s potency per pound closer to Formula 1 car territory than any street-legal four-wheeled vehicle. While it produces incrementally more power (+9 hp) and slightly less torque (-2.7 lb-ft) than the outgoing 1299 model, this one revs to 14,500 rpm in the first five gears and 15,000 rpm in sixth, spreading its torque more evenly across a broader rev range. The result is a bike that’s easier to ride, and more crucially, easier to ride fast.
The Panigale feels slim and compact, with a 32.4-inch seat height that might feel a bit tall for shorter riders (but is typical for a superbike). The cockpit view is dominated by an updated 5-inch TFT screen that utilizes a new interface, controlled via a more logically arranged set of buttons and toggles on the left handgrip. Scroll through the settings and you can manage a seemingly endless number of variables, from traction control and wheelie control to engine braking and lean-angle-sensitive ABS thresholds. Personalized settings can thankfully be saved and recalled; there are so many, you’ll want your preferences dialed in and preserved.
Out of pit lane and onto the track, the Panigale pulls ahead with a deceptively low-pitched engine note and a long-legged stream of power. Whereas the outgoing twin had a wild surge of low-end torque, the new mill feels more progressive and linear. When my instinct and ears told me it might be time to think about shifting, I glanced at the tach and saw only 8,000 rpm. Since redline doesn’t come until 14,500 rpm, that means I would have left a considerable 6,500 rpm on the table (or 5,000 rpm until peak horsepower at 13,000 rpm).
Gulp.

You could short-shift the Panigale on a racetrack, but that’d get you mowed down by faster traffic. Stay on it, and there’s a meaty stretch of midrange torque and an eager climb to redline that caps off a breathtaking rush of power. While the clutch is required when engaging first gear, Ducati’s so-called Quick Shift system eliminates the need for the left lever when shifting anywhere between second and sixth. Simply kick the foot lever up and the next gear engages; tap it down, and rev matching brings the engine up to speed for the gear below, enabling smooth mid-corner shifts just like any run-of-the-mill, paddle shift-equipped supercar.
With 14 turns in just less than 2½ miles, Valencia is a surprisingly technical track for this high-powered superbike (a larger-scale track such as Circuit of the Americas, as used for the 1199 Panigale R, might have been a more obvious choice). But tackling Valencia’s first corner, a sharp left-hand hairpin, reveals this 430-pound motorcycle changes direction easier than you might expect. Mid-corner tracking feels solid and stable, and the bike responds reassuringly well to steering inputs thanks in part to Ducati’s new aluminum frame. Weighing only 9.2 pounds, the twin-spar setup mounts directly to the engine, which is tilted 42 degrees backward for a lower center of gravity. The frame’s relationship to the engine offers added torsional stability for enhanced feel. The powerplant, incidentally, is also used as an anchor point for the rear suspension and swingarm.
Flick through the esses, and it takes considerable self-control not to jump on the throttle too early: The power comes on with such immediacy, it’s easy to throw off your rhythm if you prematurely tap into the torque curve. However, if you do twist the throttle before it’s time, the traction control system seamlessly steps in to save your bacon from sliding; your line might be botched and you may end up in the gravel, but unless you do something exceedingly dumb, you should be able to keep the shiny side up. The system can be set to one of eight positions, 1 being the least restrictive. At 3, there’s a bit less fury coming from the engine during corner exit, but the 2 setting wakes up the bike sufficiently, enabling enough rear tire sliding to execute easily controllable drifts.

What does the number 1 setting — the closest to completely disabling traction control — feel like? I didn’t manage to try it. But a fellow journalist (who happens to be a former AMA Pro Superbike racer) later described the setting as “f***ing perky”). Needless to say, all electronic systems (including a “slide by brake” system, which enables you to back the bike into a corner by dragging the rear stoppers) can be disabled. I dipped as low as level 2 (with 0 being off), leaning on the rider aids to keep my slick Alpinestars leathers and carbon-fiber AGV Piste GP R helmet (not to mention my skin and bones) intact.
Carry enough speed into the final corner and trail wide enough to kiss the rumble strip, and you’re rewarded with a staggering blast of acceleration as the rear Pirellis hook up with the warm pavement below. Though there’s less of a tendency to lift the front end compared with the 1299, the nose still climbs and lightens enough to wobble as the torque transfers through that tiny contact patch of rubber at the tail. I wrestled the grips to stay onboard, hanging on with arm strength as the Panigale charged ahead, upshifts punctuated with the shotgun sound of unspent fuel combusting through the exhaust. At the end of the half-mile straight I saw an indicated 278 kph (172 mph) before I used my upper body as an airbrake and grabbed a bunch of front brakes. Squeezing the lever hard enough clamps the Brembo monoblock Stylema stoppers down enough to make the rear end of the bike lift, a reflection of the sheer stopping power and front-end grip the Ducati is capable of delivering. Once you’ve scrubbed off 100 mph or so, it’s a wide left, another short straight and then that hard-lefter to start the loop all over again.

Two prevailing sentiments dominated my sessions aboard this blood red weapon: exhaustion and relief. Exhaustion because, well, despite its refinements in ridability, there are inherent physical challenges to leaning 430 pounds of bike through 14 turns every 2.5 miles, ones that invariably lead to stiff wrists, sore muscles and spent core strength. The relief comes because every safe arrival back into pit lane, whether a few corners were botched or the knee-dragging proceedings were aced, is a good one. One surprising observation was, at least during the 78 degree F conditions, I didn’t feel Ducati’s significant engine heat from the seat.
The 2018 Ducati Panigale V4 puts a bright red exclamation mark on the idea that speed worshipers are savoring a golden age of horsepower and technology. You don’t have to be a motorcycle person to notice that, despite fierce competition from the Japanese big four (Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki), Ducati’s V4 is still a relative performance value. Its entry price of $ 21,195 – or $ 26,995 for the V4 S model with the trick electronically controlled Öhlins suspension – is essentially the going rate for a sensible Korean sedan.
We will always love our cars here at Autoblog, but we have a soft spot for bikes that combine race-bred performance and bleeding-edge technology, while delivering mind-blowing bang for the buck. Through that prism, the Ducati Panigale V4 delivers a stunning package that departs from tradition while adopting a reassuringly raucous (and appropriately future-friendly) powerplant, a four-cylinder packed with enough soul to atone for the loss of the beloved twin.
