While the Israeli authorities insist this was an isolated incident, reports on the ground seem to suggest otherwise.

“I woke up when I heard explosions, I looked to my house door and it was destroyed by IDF [Israeli Defence Forces] bomb,” Jarrar, a schoolteacher, told RT’s Ruptly video agency from his hospital bed. As he gathered his family in the bedroom, he heard several more explosions, one of which took down the main house door before he was set upon by the dog.

“I saw one dog that started to attack me and bit my shoulder. Then it started to bite my leg. I was screaming,” he continued. “After I was bleeding for more than two hours and a half, they took me to the hospital.”

The savage mauling, which left Jarrar in need of a skin graft, took place on February 3, during an operation in Jarrar’s home village of Burkin. The IDF were searching for the killer of Rabbi Raziel Shevach, who was allegedly murdered by one Ahmed Jarrar (Ahmed was later killed in a subsequent operation). During the raid, the soldiers also forced Jarrar’s wife, mother and disabled sister to strip for a body search, and arrested his two brothers, one of whom remains in custody.

“I consider it a war crime. They attacked my home and frightened my children and my wife,” Jarrar said.
According to journalist Max Blumenthal, the use of attack dogs on Palestinians is part of a long-standing policy.
“This is being cast by the Israeli military and government as kind of an isolated incident, but, as any of us who follow the situation in the West Bank, this is far from isolated. Its part of a clear policy of using dogs as an advance team during home raids on Palestinians,” Blumenthal told RT, noting the high-profile case of 16-year-old Hamzeh Abu Hashem, accused of throwing stones at soldiers in 2015. A representative of Breaking the Silence, a former IDF soldier left-wing organization, told RT at the time that such cases are “not unusual.”

“These dogs apply 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch, and Israeli soldiers were taunting him on video,” continued Blumenthal.

“And now Hamzeh Abu Hashem and the Palestinian rights group Al-Haq are suing not Israel, but actually the Dutch company Four Winds K9 – which has supplied what it calls biting dogs to the Israeli military – for violating UN conventions on companies operating in conflict zones. So this is a very significant lawsuit and it speaks to a wider policy of what the Israeli dissident journalist Gideon Levy calls ‘lynching by dog.’”

“My husband and I made a huge mistake by coming there. And I advise you not to believe those who say that ISIS is an Islamic state, which preaches Islam and Sharia and lives pursuant to the teachings of Prophet Muhammed and the Koran,” Khadija said.

The militants do not tolerate any dissent and opposition to their reign, she noted. 

“Everybody, who takes a stand against them, they behead. And people don’t know when this is going to happen.”

“They are not on righteous path. This is the state of tyranny and Satan. My husband renounced them, and told me to do the same,” Khadija went on to say, adding that she and her husband escaped Raqqa running south to the town of al-Mayadeen and then to Turkey.

But before she made her escape, the young woman got to know IS’s darkest side with its ever-depreciating cost of human life, and in particular, of that of the most vulnerable, women and children.   

“There was a lot of evil in the places where women live. Children were suffering from scabies, lice. When children were ill, they did not receive treatment at hospital,” Khadija said.

If women were found to be in violation of the strict code of conduct, imposed by IS, they were locked up in prison-like detention facilities by female watchers, put in charge of “women dormitories.”

“It was sickening to be there,” Khadija said, recounting stories of women in labor seeking help and receiving indifference at best. Women were routinely denied maternity care and forced to deliver babies on the spot.

One woman bled to death during labor after the dormitory’s superintendent refused to help her.

“That poor woman went to the garden, while bleeding heavily, stayed there till morning in a rainy and cold weather. Nobody paid attention to her. And in the morning her husband came, saw her body lying in the garden and passed by, without paying any attention, as nothing happened, as if [she] were a dog,” Khadija said.

In another case, a woman became crippled after her plea to be sent to hospital was rejected despite her saying that he leg was rotting. 

While it appears that for a lot of women the life under IS was a living hell, it was not uncommon for the militants to have a sex slave in addition to a wife.

According to Khadija, women who are not sex slaves, are not subjected to the so-called “sex jihad.”

“You go to the city hall and get married. If you have been married and your husband got killed, you just got married to another man,” she said. The completely different story is, however, when a woman is captured and turned into a sex slave.

As a sex slave, a woman is considered to be the property of her owner, to do with as he pleases, for instance, to sell or give as a present. 

“The wife and the other woman live separately. He lives with them in turns – one day with one woman, and the other day with another,” Khadija said, noting that despite their superior status lawful wives sometimes envy the Yazidi slave women.

“Many men love Yazidi girls more than their wives,” she said.

A 20-year-old, Nur Al-Khouda, originally from Tripoli, Lebanon, said her husband first joined a Salafi group where he was indoctrinated with IS ideology and left for Syria.

“He persuaded me that there’s nothing bad there and I trusted him as his wife so I arranged all the documents and I joined him in Syria,” the young woman told RT.

The slave trade is a booming market in IS, she said.

“They paid a lot of attention to women’s looks. They bought makeup to sell them for $ 15,000, the virgins were priced at $ 30,000.”

Young girls also became a mere commodity once they are in hands of jihadists, she added, recounting that the militants planned to sell a 10-year-old girl for some $ 10,000.

It was reported the girls as young as 8 are sold at such slave markets. Some 3,000 to 5,000 Yazidi women are believed to be held captive by IS as sex slaves.

Uber has revealed part of its financials for the first time, perhaps in effort to distract you from all the controversies it’s involved with. The privately held ride-hailing company, which isn’t required to publicize its earnings, has told Bloomberg that its sales growth is outpacing losses. Its gross bookings (or how much it collects from drivers) in 2016 apparently amounted to $ 20 billion, which is double the total from the year before. The company took home around $ 6.5 billion from that amount after adjustments.

That’s not bad at all, except its net losses for the year were $ 2.8 billion, excluding the $ 1 billion it lost in 2016 from its failed venture in China. Add those two figures, and its net revenue doesn’t sound that impressive anymore. MarketWatch even pointed out that Uber would’ve been one of the top 10 biggest money losers in 2016 if it were public.

While the company didn’t give Bloomberg a detailed picture of its earnings, it told the publication that its gross bookings for the last three months of 2016 were 28 percent higher than the previous quarter’s. As a result, its revenue ($ 2.9 billion) was 74 percent higher. Unfortunately, the last quarter of 2016 followed its earnings’ overall trend for the year, and the losses for that period were 6.1 percent higher at $ 991 million. As Columbia University business professor Evan Rawley told Bloomberg: “That’s a lot of cash to burn in a quarter.”

Further, its $ 6.5 billion net revenue might not even be accurate, considering it doesn’t account for employees’ stock compensation, some real estate investments, car purchases and a few other expenses. Uber also considers the entire amount of UberPool fares as revenue, including the part taken by drivers. For normal Uber rides, it only counts its portion of the fare.

Money, however, isn’t Uber’s sole or biggest problem. It has to deal with the fallout from various issues, including the sexual harassment allegation by a former engineer who said Uber’s HR repeatedly ignored her complaints. Uber is also embroiled in a court battle against Alphabet after the tech titan sued the company for stealing its self-driving technology. Plus, reports that it employs sleazy business practices recently came to light. It apparently uses a tool called Greyball to prevent local authorities from grabbing a ride and ran a program called Hell to spy on Lyft’s drivers for two years.
