The First Minister said on Monday that images showing the apparent lack of social distancing at packed pubs “made me want to cry”. She warned a cluster of new cases in Aberdeen is “exactly what we feared when we reopened hospitality”. But appearing on ITV Good Morning Britain, Emily Hewertson blasted Nicola Sturgeon‘s apparent message to younger people enjoying the easing of lockdown restrictions in Scotland.

The young commentator blasted: “Do you want to know what makes me cry?

“All the jobs opportunities that young people are’t going to be able to get because of COVID.

“I think young people really have the bad end of the deal here.

“A lot of grads can’t get jobs now and are having for fork out of master’s.

“I think young people are in a really difficult position and at the end of the day, only two percent of COVID deaths came from people under 50.

“And a lot of those deaths were people who had underlying health conditions.”

The First Minister has repeatedly warned Scots the move to the final phase could take longer and said on Monday that phase three will continue for the “foreseeable future”.

Speaking at the Scottish Government’s coronavirus briefing in Edinburgh on Monday, she said: “One of the criteria we’ve got to satisfy ourselves of to go into phase four is that the judgment is that this virus no longer presents a significant threat to public health and we’re not there yet right now.

Despite saying there will be no wholesale move to phase four, the First Minister announced a number of indicative dates for the easing of some restrictions.

If the virus continues to be suppressed , outdoor mass gatherings and contact sports, funfairs, amusement arcades, bingo halls and pool halls will be allowed to reopen on August 24, along with the resumption of driving lessons.

On September 14, gyms, swimming pools, indoor live events, sports stadiums and indoor sports courts will be able to begin again.

The exchange took place at a press conference on Wednesday during which reporters asked the usual questions about the president’s relationship with Russia. When Trump met with Putin in Helsinki in July, Democrats and Republicans found something to agree upon, haranguing the president for not being tougher on his Russian counterpart for “meddling” in the 2016 election – allegations that have yet to be proven.

Trump told reporters he planned to meet with Putin during the G20 summit in Argentina this month but repeated he will not be meeting with the Russian president in Paris during the Armistice Day ceremonies commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The two nations mutually agreed not to hold a summit during the event to avoid causing a distraction.

The US and other western countries imposed harsh sanctions following Russia’s March 2014 reunification with Crimea, which they portrayed as an act of Russian aggression despite the decision of the majority of Crimea’s inhabitants. The vote followed on the heels of the overthrow of democratically-elected Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych after a series of violent protests in Kiev’s Maidan Square and the rise of a coalition backed by the US and NATO.

This isn’t the first time Trump has blamed Obama for the situation in Crimea. The president made similar remarks in June while discussing his plans to meet with Putin, suggesting that the “loss” of Crimea happened “because President Putin didn’t respect President Obama, didn’t respect our country.”

An injury crisis coming into this international double-header has been exacerbated by suspensions to John Stones and Jordan Henderson, and Southgate said: “Maybe they were expecting us to be back by the end of June.

That will give Southgate the opportunity to experiment with Ross Barkley in a No10 role playing off Harry Kane in a bid to help his captain get back on the scoresheet.

There is a feeling that tiredness has played a big part in below-par displays throughout the squad since the World Cup.

Certainly Spain, who exited the World Cup 13 days earlier than England, started their domestic league seven days after the Premier League.

As a result, the home-based La Liga players got 47 days’ rest compared to 27 for England’s Premier League players.

With 18 of the 23-man England squad who went to Russia now involved in European competition, that burden is starting to bite.

“When you see the league, a lot of teams haven’t started yet at the level when they are at their maximum,” said Southgate.

“And there are a lot of injuries across our league. I think it’s psychological rather than physical.”

Raheem Sterling is one who could do with a psychological boost – not least his first international goal for three years. Southgate is backing him.

“It’s going to be a confidence thing that when the goal comes he will go on a scoring run,” he said.

“He’s been tough enough to deal with challenges in the past and I expect him to come through this.”

Malaysia’s nonagenarian prime minister has defended his controversial statements referring to Jews as “hook-nosed,” doubling down to assert that the creation of Israel has triggered most of the current troubles in the Middle East.

Mahathir Mohamad’s comments came after being asked about alleged instances of being a “proud anti-Semite” during his long career in politics, by journalist Zeinab Badawi during an interview on BBC’s Hardtalk program on Tuesday.

“If you are going to be truthful, the problem in the Middle East began with the creation of Israel. That is the truth. But I cannot say that,” he told Badawi. Labelling Israelis as “special” over other nationalities, Mohamad said that any challenges to the Israeli state’s historical narratives, such as questioning the exact number of Jews murdered during the Holocaust, are automatically branded as anti-Semitic.

Quoting his 1970 book “the Malay Dilemma,” Mohamad was then challenged about describing Jews as “hook-nosed” and who “understand money instinctively.” He responded that Malaysians too were the subject of comments like being “lazy” or about their appearance.

“They are hook-nosed,” he agreed, before adding that “many people called the Malays fat-nosed. We didn’t object, we didn’t go to war for that.”

At 93, Mohamad became the world’s oldest leader in May, when he swept to power for the second time in his career, following the resignation and arrest of Najib Razak amid a massive corruption scandal.

However, his return to power was met with criticism from those who say his previous remarks on Israel were anti-Semitic, with a tweet from US-based Anti-Defamation League (ADF) calling it “unacceptable.”

While the Israeli government has yet to comment and the ADL has yet to react to the comments made in his recent interview, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) slammed the remarks tweeting: “such moments by political leaders cannot be tolerated.”

Following a deadly attack on a military parade in southern Iran, the country’s foreign minister said that regional sponsors of terrorism and their “US masters” are to be held accountable for such assaults.

Top Iranian diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif vowed to respond “swiftly and decisively” after gunmen opened fire in Ahvaz on Saturday leading to multiple casualties. The minister claimed that the terrorists were sponsored and trained by “a foreign regime.”

Iran holds regional terror sponsors and their US masters accountable for such attacks.

The carnage has claimed the lives of up to 24 people, Iran’s state-run Irna news agency says, adding that over 50 people were killed.

According to the outlet, the assault has been carried out by the “Patriotic Arab Democratic Movement in Ahwaz” group. “These terrorists… were trained and organised by two … Gulf countries,” Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said.

On Monday night, a Russian Air Force Ilyushin IL-20 “Coot-A” electronic intelligence and radar reconnaissance aircraft monitoring the Idlib province of Syria was mistakenly shot down by Syrian air defense forces after an Israeli air strike on facilities in Latakia, Syria. The Russian aircraft went down in the Mediterranean, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) off the Syrian coast near Latakia, with a loss of all 15 crewmembers aboard. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the downing was the result of a “chain of tragic accidental circumstances.” But the Russian Defense Ministry has laid the blame for the downing on the Israelis, saying that they failed to provide enough warning to the Russians to give the IL-20 an opportunity to steer clear of danger.

“The Israeli pilots used the Russian plane as cover and set it up to be targeted by the Syrian air defense forces,” a Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson said. “As a consequence, the Il-20, which has a radar cross-section much larger than the F-16, was shot down by an S-200 system missile.” The Russians also claimed Israel only warned them a minute before the attack.

Russian Army General Sergei Shoigu told Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman in a phone call that the fault for the reconnaissance plane’s downing “rests entirely with the Israeli side.”
