Blackwater, the controversial US private security company, has flagged its intent to resume business, taking out a full-page commercial in the latest edition of Recoil magazine with a chilling message declaring “We are coming” The resurrection within the military contractors’ market of notorious Blackwater, which, after numerous scandals and several rebrandings, is now known as Academi, has analysts looking deeper into US intent to withdraw from the wars in the Middle East. The advertisement in Recoil, made public after Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced his resignation, prompted concerns that president Donald Trump might be seeking to privatize ongoing American engagements in Afghanistan and Syria, following the declared troops’ withdrawal from the region. The main supporter of the idea of privatizing the US fighting in the Middle East has been Erik Prince, the former head of Blackwater. The longtime Republican sold the company in 2010 but has maintained communications with Trump, reportedly trying to lobby his inner circle to replace the US military presence in the region with mercenaries. Mattis, who served in the Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq, firmly rejected the idea. Trump has basically fired the very people who told him that it would not work and not to do it. “With Mattis now gone it is conceivable that Trump now may reevaluate” Prince’s proposal, Michael Maloof, former Pentagon security analyst, told RT. Whether or not outsourcing US wars to a private contractor will have any positive affect on the ground remains to be seen, Maloof explained, stressing that a “three private military contractors for one US soldier” ratio currently set up in Syria and Afghanistan has failed to achieve much. “Erik Prince is very close to Trump,” the analyst pointed out, but “he would have to bring very traumatic force and it’s going to cost money and Erik Prince is getting paid by the US government.” The prospects of Blackwater’s return to the mercenary market has distressed those few among American public who remember the notorious murder of 14 Iraqi civilians by the company’s guards in 2007 in Nisour Square, Baghdad. “I don’t think the American public would stand for a company that has committed so many crimes in the past,” political activist, Medea Benjamin told RT. “Erik Price and mercenaries make money by continuing wars, not ending them.” If you like this story, share it with a friend!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Blackwater Worldwide founder Erik Prince is considering a Republican primary challenge to Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, a senior member of the Senate Republican leadership team.
A person familiar with Prince’s thinking says he was in Wyoming this weekend to discuss a possible Senate campaign with family members.
Prince has been encouraged to run by Steve Bannon, a former top strategist to President Donald Trump. That’s according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe private deliberations.
Prince’s potential candidacy was first reported by The New York Times.
Also founder of Frontier Resource Group, a private equity firm, Prince is brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Security contractor Blackwater came under scrutiny after its guards were involved in the shooting deaths of 14 civilians in Baghdad in 2007.

In several recent op-eds, the Blackwater founder suggested “restructuring” America’s presence in Afghanistan by replacing US troops training and assisting Afghan security units with private contractors on a long-term basis.
Prince’s new security company, Frontier Services Group, will bid for the government contract should the Trump administration take up his Afghanistan proposal, he told C-SPAN on Friday.
“I was asked by the folks at the White House to elaborate on the op-ed I wrote to the Wall Street Journal,” Prince said. He did not say whether the White House gave him an answer.
Having fought the US for over 15 years, “the Taliban now are at their best,” Prince told C-SPAN. America’s conventional army is losing to guys “in pickup trucks and flip-flops,” he added.
In March, Prince offered Kabul to hire a private air-force to back the local army’s operations, the Military Times reported last week. Prince’s plan included providing “high speed response” as well as close-air support for Afghanistan’s army fighting the Taliban. The private air force’s fixed-wing planes, attack helicopters and drones would be flown by hired pilots, but “weapons release decisions will still be made by Afghans,” according to the newspaper.
Some of the people who called in to ask questions during the interview blasted Prince for pitching mercenaries to fight the war in Afghanistan.
“I don’t want to send my money to Mr. Prince or anyone like him,” said one caller.
Blackwater rose to infamy in September 2007, after its operatives gunned down 17 Iraqi civilians, including a 9-year-old boy, in Baghdad’s Nisour Square.
In 2010, the private security firm reached an agreement with the State Department to pay $ 42 million in fines for hundreds of violations of US export control regulations. The violations included illegal weapons exports to Afghanistan, making unauthorized proposals to train troops in south Sudan, and providing sniper training for Taiwanese police officers, the New York Times reported. They have since rebranded as Academi, while Prince went on to establish Frontier Services Group in Hong Kong.

The US-backed government controls about 60 percent of the country, down from 65 percent the same time last year, according to the US military headquarters in Kabul. Meanwhile, the Taliban is gaining ground. Last week, militants gained control of a key area in Afghanistan’s north Sari Pul province.
As of 2016, the Pentagon had around 26,000 private contractors in Afghanistan, about half of whom were assigned to logistics and maintenance duties, according to the US Department of Defense. The US currently has around 9,000 troops deployed in the country, on a mission to train and assist Afghan forces.
President Donald Trump reportedly lashed out at top US military officials in a July meeting for “losing” in Afghanistan and questioned whether America’s longest war is still worth fighting.
“We are not winning in Afghanistan right now,” Defense Secretary James Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee in June.
Mattis promised to deliver an updated strategy by mid-July, but the decision-making appears to have stalled.
This week, committee chairman Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) blasted Trump over the lack of Afghanistan strategy and offered his own plan for the Senate to vote on. It involves more troops, more bombing and an enduring US presence in the country.

Last week, the US Court of Appeals in the DC circuit ordered a retrial of former Blackwater guard Nicholas Slatten, saying in its ruling that the court was acting beyond its discretion when it did not allow for a separate trial of Slatten. In 2014, Slatten and three other guards – Paul Slough, Dustin Heard and Evan Liberty – were found guilty in the 2007 massacre of civilians in Nisour Square in Baghdad.
Fourteen people died in the incident and scores were injured after the guards opened fire.
Jassim Mohammad Hashim, who was shot in the head during the incident, told RT Arabic that he was shocked when he heard the news of the court mulling to drop the murder conviction.
“It’s absolutely unacceptable that these people have been released. If they are guilty, how could they have been freed? We have all the proof that they are guilty,” Hashim said, adding that due to the severity of his injury he almost completely lost his ability to work and was forced to quit his job.
Hashim was a postal worker in 2007. He said he was carrying mail to a police station when the Blackwater guards started to “fire randomly at unarmed civilians.” At one point during the attack, he approached one of armored vehicles with which Blackwater barricaded the road and was shot in the head.
As he regained consciousness, he managed to reach a police station and told officers about the circumstances of the incident.
“I only remember that people who committed this crime were from Blackwater. Such a crime is impossible to forget…They [Blackwater guards] are criminals, they killed people,” he added.

The court’s reversal in the case struck him off guard not least because he used to trust the US judiciary system.
“We know that law and justice are respected in the United States,” he said, calling on the international community to raise the issue with Washington. “I am against release of these criminals from Blackwater, who took part in the incident on Nisour Square in Baghdad. I demand the international community intervene to prevent the release of those Blackwater employees who are accused of this crime.”
Hussein Sahib Nasir, brother of Mahdi Sahib Nasir who was killed in the incident, accused US of turning backs on declared principle of respect for human rights by considering to soften the sentences.
“My brother was just 24 years old. He was working to provide for our elderly parents. Our family is still suffering a lot until now. Where is the humanism? Where are the human rights? How can they acquit criminals and release them? On what grounds?” he said.
Recalling the day of his brother’s murder, Hussein said that was he saw at the square resembled wartime hostilities.
“When I got to this place, there was horror, it was like a war was ongoing. Cars were burnt, bullets and blood were everywhere.”
A member of Iraq’s lawyers’ association told RT that while retrial is a normal procedure everyone is entitled to, the Iraqi government should make sure the contractors never tread on Iraqi soil again.
“Also, we demand from Iraq’s Foreign Ministry to file a protest with the US government over these criminals, who killed innocent civilians,” she told RT Arabic.
Slatten was convicted of a first-degree murder and handed a life sentence after being found to be the first to start firing rounds at civilians. His three former colleagues and partners in crime received 30 years behind bars each for multiple counts of voluntary manslaughter and attempted manslaughter. The US attorney’s office said at the time that the perpetrators “acted unreasonably and without justification” while “killing and maiming unarmed civilians” describing the extent of human loss and suffering incurred by the Blackwater guards as “staggering.”

Besides overturning Slatten’s sentence, the court also ordered the revision of the verdicts of his co-defendants, saying that by giving them mandatory 30-year terms the court acted in violation of the constitutional amendment “against cruel and unusual punishment.”
The guards, meanwhile, insist they were acting in self-defense, despite multiple witnesses saying that the fire was unprovoked.
Blackwater, the private military company, operated during the US invasion in Iraq as part of the occupational authorities. After it gained notoriety following the 2007 bloodshed, Blackwater was rebranded Xe Services in 2009. In 2011, it changed the name once again for Academi.

An appeals court vacated the first-degree murder conviction of a Blackwater guard and ordered a new trial on Friday.
Nicholas Slatten was charged with being involved in the 2007 incident where private security contractors working for the US government opened fire in Baghdad and left more than a dozen Iraqi civilians dead and others wounded. An appeals court on Friday ruled that he should have been tried separately from the other contractors involved.
“The Court concludes that the district court abused its discretion in denying Slatten’s motion to sever his trial from that of his co-defendants and therefore vacates his conviction and remands for a new trial,” the opinion states.
The court also called for the resentencing of the other Blackwater guards, Paul Slough, Evan Liberty and Dustin Heard.
All of the men have have been challenging their cases for years.

]]>“This is complete nonsense,” Peskov said on Tuesday after posed with a question by a reporter.
Earlier Monday, the Washington Post reported, citing unnamed US, European and Arab officials, that the UAE in January arranged secret talks between Erik Prince, the founder of notorious private US military firm Blackwater, and “a Russian close to President Vladimir Putin.”
According to the paper, the meeting at the Seychelles was organized to establish a “back-channel line of communication” between the Russian government and the administration of President Trump.
The White House spokesman, Sean Spicer, has rejected the report, calling it “a bunch of flimsy pieces of information all tied together.”
Spicer pointed out that Prince had no role in Trump’s campaign or his transition when the alleged meeting took place on January 11, with this fact not being contested by Washington Post.
The paper “can’t identify the other individuals” except the Blackwater founder, who participated in the talks, he added.
“Apparently, he [Prince] knows somebody, who knew somebody, who knew a guy in the UAE, who also knew a guy in Russia,” Spicer said, describing the article.
He also added that the authorities at the Seychelles said that they have no records of such meeting taking place and even of Prince visiting the islands.
Spicer believes the paper linked the Blackwater founder to the story only due to the fact that his sister, Betsy DeVos, was on the Trump team as Education Secretary.

When the journalist asked the White House spokesman to acknowledge that the Washington Post report may be potentially problematic for the Trump administration, he categorically replied: “No.”
Reports about the alleged “Russia ties” of the Trump administration have been consistently used by Trump’s Democratic Party opponents, who also allege that Russia-backed hackers got into the Democratic National Committee (DNC) email server to influence the election in favor of the Republicans. None of the allegations of Moscow’s involvement in the 2016 US presidential elections or those of Trump having an established connection with Vladimir Putin’s government have so far been backed by evidence.
