THE SHOW|Orphan Black

THE EPISODE| “To Right the Wrongs of Many” (Aug. 12, 2017)

THE PERFORMANCE| For her final Orphan Black performance, Maslany pulled off yet another magic trick: She helped deliver two babies (as Sarah) and gave birth (as Helena) at the same time. (She also welcomed little Kira into the world via intercut flashbacks, for the record.) Even after five seasons of watching Maslany do the seemingly impossible, the chemistry that the actress was able to create with herself as Sarah coached Helena through the birthing process was as astounding as the idea of human clones itself. When Helena pushed through the pain to find joy with her newborn twins, and a tearful Sarah embraced her “meathead” sister, Maslany took us on a roller-coaster ride of raw emotions so intensely palpable, we’re still in awe. (Read the creators’ take on the scene here.)

The show’s swan song also gave Maslany the opportunity to slow down and reveal the vulnerable hearts of the Ledas. As Sarah’s walls crumbled, the actress unleashed a dam of pent-up insecurities about motherhood during an intimate conversation between the sestras. Meanwhile, Maslany’s gaze was so wistful and sad as Rachel pondered her lonely future apart from her kin that you had to feel for the corporate clone.

We suspect it will be a while — or possibly, never — before another performer is able to so skillfully and completely make us forget that the same person is underneath such a diverse array of doppelgängers. She is, simply put, one of a kind.

HONORABLE MENTION | Foremost among the marvels of Shawn Hatosy‘s work on Animal Kingdom is the way he makes us see that Pope, for all of his horrific misdeeds, is not inherently evil. Rather, the ex-con is akin to a pit bull who’d be perfectly sweet, had he not been so badly warped by his upbringing. Which, of course, made “The Leopard” particularly harrowing — and an ideal showcase for the duality that the actor has nurtured in his character. After Pope learned that he’d been manipulated into murdering unrequited love Catherine for no reason, Hatosy uncorked his alter ego’s rage in a confrontation with mom Smurf that was, at turns, terrifying, heartbreaking and, as their interactions so often are, unsettlingly sexual. Off that devastating showdown, Pope, desperate and vulnerable, confessed his sin to girlfriend Amy in a last-ditch attempt at being forgiven that left his portrayer wearing an expression so hopeless, we wanted to give him a hug in addition to this Honorable Mention.

HONORABLE MENTION | Eat your heart out, Meg Ryan. In the “Hella LA” episode of Insecure, Natasha Rothwell didn’t just steal the final scene — in which Kelli’s day-party hookup pleasured her under a restaurant table while surrounded by their friends — she stole the whole damn show. By now, we’re well-trained to expect hilarity to ensue whenever the actress appears on screen. But she took it to a whole other level this week as Kelli, struggling to enjoy herself discreetly, shut her eyes before they rolled back in her head, tried to control her breathing, and cleared her throat to cover what otherwise would have been a gasp of ecstasy. By the time she was through, we’d had, albeit in a different way, what Kelli had: a hell of a good time. And, unlike Ryan’s Sally, neither Kelli nor we were faking it.

HONORABLE MENTION | Something is eating at Twin Peaks‘ Sarah Palmer — and because of Grace Zabriskie‘s performance, we almost don’t want to know what! In Part 14 of the revival, Zabriskie showed us a woman (?) trying to temper her temper as a neanderthal cruised her at a bar. “Mind your own business. Please,” she flatly asked (or advised). “Would you sit back where you were. Please.” When the cretin scorned suggested she was a “bull dyke” and graphically detailed the activities associated with that, Sarah with a menacing glance purred back, “I’ll eat you,” before rising to reveal her true face (so to speak) and then take a lightning-fast chomp out of the guy’s neck. When the bar boss laid eyes on the mauled barfly, Sarah — in a terrific button to the scene — played dumb as Zabriskie shrugged, “Sure is a mystery, huh.”

Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany Looks Back at Her Clone Journey, Talks Bloody Goodbye and 'Really Different' Finale https://briefnews.eu/orphan-blacks-tatiana-maslany-looks-back-at-her-clone-journey-talks-bloody-goodbye-and-really-different-finale/ https://briefnews.eu/orphan-blacks-tatiana-maslany-looks-back-at-her-clone-journey-talks-bloody-goodbye-and-really-different-finale/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 16:56:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/orphan-blacks-tatiana-maslany-looks-back-at-her-clone-journey-talks-bloody-goodbye-and-really-different-finale/ Orphan Black‘s chameleon-like star Tatiana Maslany had such a difficult time parting with the many clones she has played on the BBC America series that she, literally, got a nosebleed while saying goodbye to one of them.

The bloody moment, which came during her final scene as suburban mom Alison, “was so telling in terms of how little I wanted to let go of that character,” Maslany tells TVLine in the following Q&A. (We’ll miss Alison a lot, too.)

Below, Maslany reflects on her 230+ clone appearances over the past five seasons, and previews the “very different” series finale (airing this Saturday at 10/9c), which takes the show “back to a human level.”

TVLINE | There’s a chart on the show’s Wikipedia page that tallies the number of appearances for each actor per season. And thanks to your many characters, your total is 231 appearances over five seasons. Just to put that into perspective, Ari Millen comes in second at 50 appearances.
Oh my God. That’s awesome.

TVLINE | What goes through your head when you hear that number?
I mean, it doesn’t feel unreasonable. [Laughs] ‘Cause I definitely was on set every, kind of, second of the day. So that feels about right. I think I did ten thousand lines of ADR… Nobody should be talking that much. [Laughs]

TVLINE |The very first interview you and I did was before the show premiered, but I think you had filmed all of Season 1. You talked about what a joy it was to play all these characters, but also how exhausting it was. Did it get any easier for you over the years?
Not entirely. I think I was just sort of in shock that first season. I’d never led a TV series, let alone played this many characters, so it was a new thing for me. I think I got used to the amount of work it was, but it’s only now that I’ve got some time off [from] it that I’m like, “Oh, right, this is what sleep feels like. And this is what not, like, constantly having 90 voices in your head feels like.” It’s been a bizarre process of letting go of that amount of work a little bit.

Orphan Black RachelTVLINE | I remember you saying that Rachel was a particularly scary clone for you because you’d never really done that type of character or accent before. By the end, did you feel comfortable in her skin?
I always felt a little bit uncomfortable in Rachel’s skin, but I also just loved her to bits because of that. She definitely wasn’t a natural choice for me, or kind of conventional casting. She really gave me this chance to stretch as an actor and try something different. So I loved Rachel, and I’m so glad we got to keep exploring her.

TVLINE | Looking back at the five seasons, is there a scene that stands out for you as being particularly difficult or rewarding?
There’s some stuff that happens at the end of Season 5. But there have been so many. I mean, I can’t even remember half the things we’ve done on the show. The last episode of Season 5 is full of scenes that were technically complex, emotionally complex. That was a really memorable episode for me.

TVLINE | Speaking of the last episode, how would you sum up the series finale for those who haven’t seen it yet?
I’m interested to see what people think about it. We really wanted to finish it in Orphan Black style, and also kind of surprise the audience. So hopefully, they get some of that. We’ve had some major things happen this season that have broken the hearts of the clones and altered them forever. So we see some of the consequences of that. It’s a really different episode for us, as well.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | There were some individual clone-centric installments this season, and the finale’s a big one for Sarah. How would you describe her mindset in the episode?
Helena’s in labor, and it’s Sarah in action: Sarah flying forward, trying her best, the way that Sarah always has, just with her own resourceful mind and with this team of people that she has around her, trying to fight for freedom. So that is certainly where we start that episode. But it’s this kind of blind crashing into whatever’s coming at them.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | The last episode ended with Helena going into labor. What can you say about her journey in this final hour?
I loved the episode [last week] that was Helena-centric, in terms of seeing a little bit of her backstory that we sort of knew, but also fleshing out this self-hatred she has with herself in the present day, in terms of what she did to her sisters and all of that. At the beginning of this episode, obviously, she’s in labor and in distress. But she’s also firmly holding onto her sister, [whom] she fought so hard to be with over these last few seasons. They’ve had a very difficult relationship in that they’ve both tried to kill each other. [Laughs] But their love is so strong.

TVLINE | You’re so close to these characters, and you’re a producer on the show. How much influence did you have on where their journeys ended? Were there certain things you wanted to see for the seestras?
There are certain things that I wanted, and other things that I wasn’t expecting and loved the surprise of them. I think for all of us, it was about coming back to the microcosm of this family, this chosen family that they’ve all created, and these links that they have, that sense of community. So that was really what our focus was: taking it out of this large-scale corruption of these larger corporations, and bringing it back to a human level.

Orphan Black Series FinaleTVLINE | I have a very difficult question for you: Which clone will you miss playing the most?
I think I’ll miss Helena the most, but then Alison as well. Like, my body had a really visceral reaction to saying goodbye to Alison. I was doing a scene that happens in Episode 9, where I’m Skyping with Cosima, talking about Siobhan’s funeral and her death. It was the last scene that I shot as Alison. So I was already so upset, doing this scene, and then also just saying goodbye, and my nose just started bleeding profusely. It was a mess, a disaster. So I was just, like, covered in blood, and that was my last moment as Alison. [Laughs] Which was so telling in terms of how little I wanted to let go of that character.

Orphan Black Dinner SceneTVLINE | Getting to portray so many distinctive women in one project is such a rare gift. What are you going to take away from this experience going forward?
I guess just a sense of play. There was so much creativity in this project for me and for, I think, all of us. And just continuing to explore that way and be open to the infinite possibilities of what any person could be or what any actor can play. I just feel very open and excited to tackle something new. Not sure what that’s going to be.

TVLINE | After taking on such a monumental task, could you see yourself signing up to do another TV series and committing to another five or six seasons of something?
Yeah, I think so. Maybe not like immediately, but definitely down the line at some point. But I also want to do theater and go back to the rehearsal hall a little bit.

Why Is Twin Peaks' Audrey So Sour? Orphan Black's 'Must' Encore? Should Younger Go There? And More TV Qs! https://briefnews.eu/why-is-twin-peaks-audrey-so-sour-orphan-blacks-must-encore-should-younger-go-there-and-more-tv-qs/ https://briefnews.eu/why-is-twin-peaks-audrey-so-sour-orphan-blacks-must-encore-should-younger-go-there-and-more-tv-qs/#respond Fri, 04 Aug 2017 18:41:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-is-twin-peaks-audrey-so-sour-orphan-blacks-must-encore-should-younger-go-there-and-more-tv-qs/ We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Power, Everwood, Younger and Suits!

Orphan Black Season 3 Sarah Cal1 | With only two Orphan Black episodes left, which characters — dead or alive — do you hope make an appearance before the show’s end? Hot Paul, Beth, Cal…? (It would be strange if Kira’s dad never popped up again, right?)

2 |Would Twin Peaks‘ Audrey — who always was as cool as the other side of the pillow — grow up to be someone so blowsy and coarse? Also, can we assume that Julee Cruise will play the roadhouse in the finale?

3 | Does any show on TV right now have a better soundtrack than Insecure? And where can we get a Frank Ocean phone case like Issa’s?

4 | In this week’s Power, was Tommy’s murderous stop during his road trip home a beautiful tribute to Holly’s memory… or a terrible move that’ll draw more attention to Ghost’s drug operation?

5 | How hard and long would you have to think to come up with a more irrelevant show to revive than TRL?

6 | Has So You Think You Can Dance barely acknowledged All-Star Jasmine Harper since the Academy episodes began? Also, was Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” an inspired or terrible choice for Gaby Diaz’s tap routine with her finalists? And if you cut out all of the All-Stars saying things like, “Choosing between these two dancers is so hard!,” would the episode only be 15 minutes long?

7 | Between Casual‘s “Previously On” clip reminding us of their one-night stand and her curiously timed bout of food poisoning, could the show have telegraphed Alex and Rae’s baby twist any louder?

8 | Given the Roseanne and Will & Grave revivals’ sweeping retcons, can we expect any future series epilogue to actually stick?

9 | Doesn’t “Miami Vice reboot from executive producer Vin Diesel” read like someone at NBC was playing a game of Reboot Mad Libs?

10 | Are you hoping the Everwood 15th anniversary reunion panel becomes the catalyst for a revival, just as Gilmore Girls’ ATX panel helped usher that show back onto our screens?

11 | Salvation‘s Evil Professor Croft twist: did you see it coming, or was it a solid shocker?

12 | Are we almost seeing more of Suits‘ Jessica now, when she “isn’t on the show,” than in the previous season?

13 | Maybe we don’t follow MMA closely enough(/at all), but wouldn’t Kingdom‘s Lisa dress a bit more badass for her big “coming out” as King Beast’s new boss?

Younger14 | Was The Originals‘ Charles Michael Davis so charming on Younger that you wish the show hadn’t made his character a sneaky bastard? And isn’t it high time the show went there with Charles and Liza? (On a related note, how loudly did you scream at Charles’ impromptu confession to Liza?)

15 | This Is Us is going to find some way to get Sylvester Stallone in a scene with his Rocky Balboa son Milo Ventimiglia, right?

16 | Divergent fans, does it make sense for Starz to develop an Ascendant TV series, or would it be more prudent to start from scratch/the beginning and pretend the first three movies never happened?

17 | Why is every director on Nashville angry and British? (When did this show become Smash?) And is it a good thing Highway 65 finally decided it’s not into brand partnerships, given how poorly two of its musicians have acted on commercial sets in the past few episodes? In other words: Who would even want to partner with Deacon & Co. now?

18 | Did The Guest Book instantly turn you off by casting Community‘s Danny Pudi and Orange Is the New Black‘s Lauren Lapkus as Horndog Husband and Nagging Wife? Given that it’s an anthology series, couldn’t The Powers That Be have picked a more appealing first episode?

19 | Have you seen infomercials with more energy/urgency than Battle of the Network Stars? Also, we continue to wonder: is the “softball” used for the dunk tank real, or hollow? Because it seems to have zero heft to it as it “floats” past the target.

Lions coach Warren Gatland slates All Black's squad selection: They're not as strong as us https://briefnews.eu/lions-coach-warren-gatland-slates-all-blacks-squad-selection-theyre-not-as-strong-as-us/ https://briefnews.eu/lions-coach-warren-gatland-slates-all-blacks-squad-selection-theyre-not-as-strong-as-us/#respond Thu, 22 Jun 2017 21:44:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lions-coach-warren-gatland-slates-all-blacks-squad-selection-theyre-not-as-strong-as-us/

The Lions coach could not believe his luck when he found out the All Blacks had dropped their leading tryscorer Julian Savea and thrown 20-year-old rookie Rieko Ioane into the biggest rugby union match since the 2015 World Cup final.

A buoyant Gatland believes the All Blacks have made a mistake in picking Ioane on the wing and the workmanlike Ryan Crotty at outside centre, and also senses a weakness on the New Zealand bench which is normally such a strong point.

“It’s a great position for us to be in as a team because we feel we have a pretty strong starting XV but also some real impact coming off the bench. I’m not sure looking at their bench that it is as strong as it has been in the past,” said Gatland.

“We were surprised by Crotty being selected at 13 and Savea, who has been a constant for them, being replaced. I know how good Ioane is but this is a big game for everyone.”

Just how big is illustrated by the army of red which has descended on Auckland ahead of the game and Lions captain Peter O’Mahony hopes their swelling numbers can tip the balance as they attempt to end New Zealand’s 23-year unbeaten record at Eden Park.

“It’s a huge task obviously with the calibre of player New Zealand have and their record at Eden Park is impressive, but it’s going to be a different animal at the weekend. There are going to be 20,000-odd Lions fans there,” said O’Mahony.

Gatland wants the Lions to deploy the strong setpiece which has been a staple of the tour against the All Blacks but also to surprise them with adventure.

“We’re happy with how our setpiece is but I don’t know if it’s going to be enough playing a setpiece-orientated game to try and ground them into the ground,” said Gatland.

“When we get the opportunity we’ve got to go and score some tries and that’s why our selection is the way it is.”

One of the biggest calls at the conclusion of an 80-minute selection meeting was the decision to name Saracens-bound Scarlet Liam Williams at full-back.

“He’s played his way into the Test team by his performance,” said Gatland. “You know that every now and then there might be a brain explosion with Liam and we saw that with the yellow card [against the Blues], but we saw last year he caused the All Blacks problems with his running and attacking game.

“The message to the players before we came out to New Zealand was that to play the All Blacks you have to be bold and take risks.”

Gatland admitted preferring Alun Wyn Jones to start ahead of Maro Itoje was a “toss of a coin” affair but is banking on the contentious call yielding double dividends.

“Alun Wyn Jones knows himself it was a big call between him and Maro and he knows he is under pressure. He knows he has to go out and perform,” he said.

“There was a long debate about whether Alun Wyn fighting for his position would bring the best out of him.

“Is Maro able to make a huge impact coming off the bench? Yes, I believe he can.”

The bookmakers have New Zealand as strong favourites even if the rain which blew in yesterday and is predicted to extend to game day is seen as a leveller.

The Lions recognise the scale of the challenge but Gatland is confident enough to have begun his planning for next week’s Second Test on the basis of a famous triumph at Eden Park.

“We have even spoken as coaches that if we win on Saturday night, then you get a different animal of All Black arriving next week and we will be then be looking to potentially make a few changes for week two,” he said.

Sir Cliff Richard admits Cilla Black's death made him think about his own mortality  https://briefnews.eu/sir-cliff-richard-admits-cilla-blacks-death-made-him-think-about-his-own-mortality/ https://briefnews.eu/sir-cliff-richard-admits-cilla-blacks-death-made-him-think-about-his-own-mortality/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2017 11:00:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sir-cliff-richard-admits-cilla-blacks-death-made-him-think-about-his-own-mortality/

In an interview with Ross King on today’s episode of Lorraine, Sir Cliff spoke of fond memories he has with his late friend.

“She just made me laugh, she was full of fun,” said the singer, speaking from his home in Barbados.

He joked that he used to be “Cilla’s chauffeur” to big parties as she didn’t drive on the island.

He continued: “Everybody loved her here she was part of the Barbados scene.”

With Cilla’s tragic death happening so quickly, Ross asked Sir Cliff if it made him think of his own mortality.

He replied: “Yeah sure it does and she died because she had an accident. [There’s] nothing we can do, you can’t plan what’s going to happen to you in that respect.”

But the 76-year-old remained optimistic about the future, joking: “In my book I said what I want to do is play tennis when I’m 100 – that’s only 24 years away.

“Hello! It can happen,” he added.

The singer also addressed the recent sexual assault allegations that have surrounded him for two years, after he was cleared last June.

Sir Cliff explained that his faith is what carried him through that difficult period of his life, saying: “I was distraught, I had been on the floor in tears.

“In the end where no-one can be with you is when you go to bed. You’re on your own and that’s when I became really dependent on God,” he finished.

Lorraine continues weekdays at 8.30am on ITV.
