(Superhero Bits is a collection of stories, updates, and videos about anything and everything inspired by the comics of Marvel, DC, and more. For comic book movies, TV shows, merchandise, events, and whatever catches our eye, this is the place to find anything that falls through the cracks.)
In this edition of Superhero Bits:
Early box office tracking for “Black Adam.”
New insight on how Daredevil fits into the MCU.
John Cena achieves real-life superheroic status.
Todd McFarlane on a Spider-Man/Spawn crossover.
All that and more!

We recently learned that a brand new “Spawn” and “Batman” crossover series is coming later this year, with Todd McFarlane partnering with Greg Capullo on the book. But what about Spider-Man? Will McFarlane make his most legendary creation crossover with the web-slinger in the pages of Marvel Comics? In speaking with Bleeding Cool on that very topic, McFarlane made it seem unlikely, given his limited amount of time.
“On Batman/Spawn, Greg is doing the heavy lifting… it would be an abundance of time on my part. I would just have to find it and I just I don’t have that… so my guess is I’ll probably either go to my grave never doing it, or I’ll hold out until I have time.”
In short, don’t hold your breath on that one, comic book fans.
We are currently right in the heart of “Stargirl” season 3 on The CW and, while the network typically releases promos each week for the individual new episodes, they have released a new trailer covering the rest of the season. The video gives us a glimpse at what’s to come for the hero and the Justice Society in the rest of the season. Will it be her last though? That still remains to be seen, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves in that department.

What’s going on with that “Static Shock” movie? Has it been canceled like “Batgirl”? Is it going to go to theaters instead like “Blue Beetle”? The brass at Warner Bros. have been very quiet but Nikolas Draper-Ivey, who has written the character for DC Comics, is asking fans to exercise some patience on the matter. “Stop speculating about the Static movie. Don’t worry about those articles and be patient. I will not elaborate on this any further,” Draper-Ivey said on Twitter. So, it seems any speculation in the media right now may be unwarranted. This does not sound like a message one shares if the movie were in danger. For now, patience it is.
While the companies are keeping tight-lipped right now, the above teaser from the Arizona Iced Tea social media accounts indicates that they have partnered with Marvel for a brand new beverage. The first tracking numbers for “Black Adam” have hit the board, with the folks at Box Office Pro predicting that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s debut as the DC antihero will fetch anywhere between $ 55 and $ 70 million on its opening weekend. With the film set to arrive on October 21, the pressure is on, as it will be the first major Hollywood blockbuster to open since August. While that number would be good, it’s not the $ 100 million or more we’ve come to expect from many superhero films in recent years. Though these numbers are early and tracking has proved to be somewhat unreliable in the pandemic era. We’ll see where the chips fall.
John Cena, star of “Peacemaker” and “The Suicide Squad,” may be an ultraviolent hero on screen, but has proven himself to be a downright superhero in real life. As indicated above, the folks at Guinness World Records have recognized the wrestler-turned-actor for his amazing record with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, having granted a staggering 650 wishes to date. That is twice as many as anyone else and, to say the very least of it, is downright remarkable. One imagines that number is only going to grow in the years to come. That’s the good stuff right there.

Charlie Cox is returning as Matt Murdock in a big way soon as “Daredevil: Born Again” is set to begin filming next year. The 18-episode series should keep the Man Without Fear busy in the MCU for some time. But is this a continuation of the Netflix show? Or something else entirely? Speaking with Screen Rant recently, Cox weighed in on the matter, saying the following:
“Yeah, I don’t know. But my instinct is based on the name of the show, it’s called Born Again, the fact…that Kevin [Feige] talks about it as being a Season 1, rather than a Season 4, my feeling is, this is a whole new deal.”
So, it seems this version of Matt Murdock may just be a variant within the Marvel multiverse, with the Netflix show taking place elsewhere. That might explain the slight differences with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in “Hawkeye.” But we’ll see how this all unfolds throughout Phase 5 of the MCU.
Lastly, Warner Bros. is pushing “Black Adam” in a big, bad way now as the TV spots are starting to surface online. This latest 30-second spot actually contains quite a bit of new footage, and even seems to offer a glimpse at the movie’s big villain, who has largely been kept under wraps up to this point. We also get a great look at Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate in costume with his helmet off, amongst many other things. Be sure to check it out for yourself above.

Marvel won some Emmys.
A new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” video game is on the way.
John Diggle on that Green Lantern tease in the “Arrow” finale.
“Batman: The Animated Series” turns 30 today.
All that and more!

The fate of the Arrowverse is all but decided, what with “The Flash” coming to an end and The CW sold to a new owner. Be that as it may, “Stargirl” lead Brec Bassinger is hopeful that the show is going to get a fourth season, though nothing is set in stone right now. Speaking with Decider, the actress had this to say about it:
“Geoff, our showrunner, for lack of a better term, this is his baby and he’s put so much love, and I’ve heard season 4 pitches, and I know he’s not leaving any stone unturned to get it to continue. But I’m just so grateful. There has been so much fan push on Twitter and Instagram, and it has made me and Geoff and the whole cast and crew feel so loved, because we do work hard on it. So it feels good that they’re rooting for us.”
“Stargirl” is currenting airing its third season on The CW right now, with new episodes dropping Wednesdays.
The fine folks at McFarlane Toys have revealed a new Kid Flash figure that is set to be a part of the company’s Build-A figure wave, in partnership with DC. Unfortunately we don’t have much to go on right now, save for the above image reveal. But we should be getting more details on pricing and a release date soon, as well as retailer info. So those who are interested in picking one of these up would do well to stay tuned to the company’s social channels.
The Creative Arts Emmys took place over the weekend and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is officially picking up trophies for its work on the small screen now. To that end, “Moon Knight” took home the Emmy for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special. More than anything, this is a reminder that Marvel and Disney are billing the show as a limited series, meaning that anyone’s hopes of getting a second season grow slimmer by the day. But hey, that one season resulted in a fancy award to add to Marvel Studios’ trophy case.

As reported by the folks at The Gamer, the September issue of Toy World Magazine states that Nickelodeon and Paramount are set to release a “brand new triple-A” video game set within the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise in 2023. The move would make sense given the release of the animated “TMNT” film “Mutant Mayhem” hitting theaters next summer. Plus, “Shredder’s Revenge” did quite well recently and the “Cowabunga Collection,” which collects a bunch of older games featuring the half-shell heroes, recently hit shelves. But this indicates we are getting something much more significant than a new side scroller. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as further details come our way.
“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” has been quite unlike any other MCU project to date and is very much making use of the episodic storytelling allowed by its Disney+ release. As part of that, we’ve been treated to some big cameos serving as major surprises week-to-week. The above video goes over some of those cameos thus far, namely Megan Thee Stallion’s much-discussed appearance in episode 3. But many other cameos in the show’s future are also teased. We know Daredevil is coming, but who else might be on the docket? The show returns with a new episode this Thursday.

A gigantic theory for years in the Arrowverse was that David Ramsey’s John Diggle would be revealed as a Green Lantern. And, wouldn’t you know it, the “Arrow” finale kind of teed that up. Yet, nothing really ever came of it. Well, speaking at DragonCon (via The Direct), Ramsey addressed that situation in a very meandering way. The main takeaway? He says that thread has yet to be resolved.
“It’s not resolved. Eric [Wallace] called me, showrunner of ‘The Flash,’ and he had a pitch for me to end the saga, the Green Lantern Saga, within the Arrowverse. The reason why he did is because the Arrowverse was ending, right? It’s gonna end with Flash and all the other shows would go. We knew, not at the time, I knew but you didn’t know yet, that Todd [Helbing] was going to reveal in ‘Superman & Lois’ that the Superman & Lois-verse, if you will, exists on another planet, on a different Earth, and these characters are still alive. The idea is perhaps there’s a world where we can explore the Flash, or maybe just Barry Allen. Maybe he is Flash, maybe he isn’t. Is Oliver Queen alive? Maybe he is. Maybe the ring is still there.”
“The Flash” season 9 and “Superman & Lois” season 3 are pretty much going to wrap it up for the Arrowverse so it seems less and less likely we’ll ever pull on this thread again. But who knows?
Just over a year after his untimely passing, Chadwick Boseman was awarded an Emmy for his final performance as T’Challa in the MCU. Specifically, the actor took home the prize for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for his work in “What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord” from “What If…?” season 1. It was a well deserved award and serves as a reminder of what we lost with Boseman’s passing, though we are very fortunate to have the tremendous body of work he left behind.

We know that Disney is finally making “Deadpool 3” happen and it seems like things are coming together nicely on that front. But who is going to be joining Ryan Reynolds in the sequel? Morena Baccarin expressed her desire to return as Vanessa during an appearance at DragonCon (via The Direct). However, she has no idea if that’s going to actually happen or not.
“You know, from your lips to God’s ears, I have no idea [if Vanessa’s in Deadpool 3]. They’re writing the script right now. I’m usually the last to find out anything. I’m not even … I wish I had information I could give you but I really don’t. But it’d be great.”
Now, let’s be honest, even if Baccarin did know something, it’s not as though she would be able to say so. Still, it does sound like she’s being genuine and the opposite of cagey here.
Lastly, today is a landmark day in superhero history as “Batman: The Animated Series,” arguably the greatest adaptation of the Dark Knight in any medium outside of the pages of DC Comics, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. indeed, on this day in 1992, the first episode of the beloved series debuted, introducing us to Kevin Conroy’s legendary Batman who, to this very day, remains the “one true Batman” for a great many fans. Those looking to celebrate can do so by streaming the series on HBO Max, if they so choose.

]]>Split in two timelines, Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead not only revealed how Alpha chose her Beta seven years ago but how the Whisperers’ leader more recently selected her Gamma (Thora Birch, making her debut). Read on, and we’ll go over all the gory — and I do mean gory — details.
SEVEN YEARS AGO | For the sake of an easier read, rather than cut back and forth between present and past the way “We Are the End of the World” did, I’m going to cover first the flashbacks to Alpha and Beta’s meeting, then flash-forward us to the present (or close to it — the hour’s present actually took place shortly before the events of the Season 10 premiere). So, seven years ago, Alpha was trying to harden up Lydia by smearing blood all over the both of them so that the girl could practice not freaking out while walking among the dead. It did not go well. When Lydia saw a woman getting disemboweled by zombies, the youngster flipped, forcing her mother to hurry them to safety inside a hospital. Well, relative safety, anyway. There was a scary man inside wearing a ski mask and brandishing a knife like he was auditioning for AHS: 1984. Guess who. Though his inclination was to attack his uninvited guests, Alpha managed to convince him to let them stay the night. “Is he a monster?” asked Lydia later. “We’re all monsters now,” Alpha replied. Very quickly, it became obvious that Alpha and Beta were cut from, if not the same sociopathic cloth, very similar fabric. She went on about how people shouldn’t have names anymore since those who were still surviving already knew each other on a primal level. And after he admonished her for humming, he remarked that “the sound of the dead… is the only song I never want to end.” Come bedtime, Lydia turned down Alpha’s offer of her favorite stuffed bunny. The child didn’t want it any longer, she wanted to be more like her mother. This was music to Alpha’s ears since, as she told her daughter, “If you can’t [become more like me], I’ll have no choice but to leave you behind.” (And the award for Mother of the Year goes to… )
Later, Alpha killed a stray walker in a hallway but was beset by more of the dead than she could handle. Beta leapt in to save her, and she discovered that “I like killing with you.” (Did that count as… flirtation?) Afterwards, as she Ginsu’d a felled walker, digging into its guts without puking, he marveled, “Oh, you’re different.” After the idea of using “big man” as a handle was shot down, Alpha christened him Mr. B, which she noted wasn’t a name, just a letter. “If I’m B,” he asked, “what does that make you?” Well, duh — “A,” she said. But then she pushed their demented connection too far by trying to remove his ski mask. “Sunrise,” he huffed. “Don’t come back.” Still, she could tell that she had him. Later on, after Lydia smeared guts on her face and let out a walker to prove she could be more like her mother, Alpha had to cross over to Beta’s side of the hall to search for her. There, Alpha spotted a snapshot of two men in front of a rehab center. One presumably was Beta; the other, a guy in a Have a Happy Day T-shirt, someone for whom he must have cared. (Brother maybe? Counselor?) Anyway, Beta had no sooner found Alpha in the forbidden zone than in walked a zombified Have a Happy Day guy, whom she immediately put down. Though Beta was enraged, she managed to convince him that “the world went dark so that we could see a new path. So come… walk with me in the darkness, and you’ll never be alone again.” In response, he declared himself the end of the world. No, she corrected. “We are the end of the world.” With that, he allowed her to lift his mask and see his face. (We, however, didn’t get a peek at what was a visage presumably disfigured from the walker tussle that had led him to his hideout.) “I can’t leave him,” Beta said of Have a Happy Day guy. “You won’t have to,” she replied, handing him a knife… to cut off the face that it seemed safe to assume he still wore in the present.
PRESENT | Spring having arrived, Beta was eager for the pack to return to their former stomping grounds. “We are far from the enemy,” he pointed out to Alpha. “Their fear will subside.” Pshaw, she basically replied. She was sure that all the beheadings would keep them good and scared for a long time. Nonetheless, they had a mission to accomplish, one that involved rounding up as many “guardians” as possible. To that end, Alpha had Beta take “the sisters” with him to gather new walkers. One of the sisters was Gamma, though she hadn’t yet been given that title. The other was the mother of the baby that Alpha had been so willing to sacrifice to make a point to Daryl back in Season 9. This sib was significantly less committed to the Whisperers’ way of life than Gamma. And she had been so traumatized by her child’s near-death that she suffered from flashbacks — the kind that leave one sobbing and screaming in a field full of walkers. Beta saved her, but we have to assume the girl wished he hadn’t. “You will pay,” he hissed. Back at the Whisperers’ camp, Alpha prevented Gamma’s sister from being executed. She even demonstrated what passed for empathy, saying that Beta could never understand how it feels to abandon one’s child. Still, since the girl was getting the pack talking about how nice things looked at Hilltop, and how cool it might be not to smell like a walker 24/7, Alpha would handle Gamma’s sister “in the deeper place.” (Gulp.)
There, to the girl’s shock — and, frankly, mine — Alpha spared her… even kind of embraced her. Beta was shocked, too. (OK, we all were!) “If she strays again,” Alpha promised, “I will skin her alive for all to see.” As for the way the girl was rousing the rabble, Alpha would show them soon enough that our heroes’ world of personal hygiene and beds was nothing but a fantasy. Was Alpha content? Beta wondered aloud. Because he’d noticed her wandering away from camp at night now and again… Hmm. The following day, Alpha and Beta were marching their herds when the satellite went blazing overhead. As the guardians descended into chaos, Gamma’s sister was once again triggered, this time by the sight of a walker wearing a baby carrier. So she removed her mask and, screaming so as to draw walkers, attacked Alpha. Her assassination attempt might have been successful, too, had Gamma not intervened, pulling her sister off of Alpha and throwing her down to be eaten alive. That night, Alpha expressed her gratitude to her savior by anointing her Gamma in front of the whole pack. Beta, meanwhile, could scarcely contain his skepticism; he clearly saw Gamma for what she was to Alpha: a replacement Lydia. Only a day later, he discovered that the actual Lydia was still alive and well. Tracking Alpha to the spot to which she kept sneaking off, he found that she was building… something for her daughter. (Was that a nest?) She’d even kept the girl’s stuffed bunny. Tearfully — yes, tearfully — Alpha confessed that she’d lied. She hadn’t been able to kill her child. To my astonishment, Beta rather tenderly reached out to Alpha and agreed to keep from the pack the fact that their leader hadn’t murdered her daughter, as she’d led them to believe. Later, Beta reported that he’d seen smoke near their border. If our heroes had crossed it, Alpha said, they’d “teach them a lesson.” With that, she and Beta recited their apocalyptic “prayer” and rejoined the herd. Somehow, Alpha was able to remove her mask among the walkers — was her natural fragrance that pungent? — and take the detour that allowed her to spot Carol, which theoretically brings the Whisperers’ present up to the same point as our survivors’ present.
So, what did you think of “We Are the End of the World”? How would you categorize Alpha and Beta’s relationship in the present? In so far as they can feel anything, is that… love?

In this edition of Sequel Bits:
Even though the recent revival of Halloween didn’t exactly leave things open-ended, the success of the movie and chatter behind the scenes has indicated that a sequel might be in the works. But if that’s true, Jamie Lee Curtis has no idea what’s going on in that department. She told Entertainment Weekly:
“I have no idea at this point, today, I have no idea. I would make an assumption that, if David Gordon Green has a story to tell, that the people involved with the movie would encourage him to tell it. [Laughs] I haven’t been told whether or not he has a story to tell and whether or not he would include Laurie Strode in the telling. Really, time will tell. I know David is a busy guy.”

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was a bit maddening. Full of exposition and a nonsensical storyline complete with a terrible retcon of a twist ending, this sequel was a disaster and had no magic whatsoever. But for fans who are still on the hook for the franchise that still has three movies to go, author turned frustrating screenwriter J.K. Rowling gave the perfect tease for Fantastic Beasts 3:
'Answers are given.' https://t.co/kQqMcjUgcQ
— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) December 10, 2018
Fantastic Beasts 3 is slated to arrive on November 20, 2020.

Bumblebee is in theaters this weekend, and hopefully it’s the beginning of a new future for Transformers on the big screen. In fact, the film’s director Travis Knight wants to see a computer animated movie about the fall of Cybertron. He told ScreenRant:
“Well, actually it would be wholly animated because the beginning of the movie is completely animated.” said Mr. Knight. “So, you know, it has live action lighting and textures and everything else, so it has that feeling, but yeah, I would love to see that movie. I gotta tell you… that was one of the biggest thrills for me, in this process, was bringing Cybertron to life and seeing the fall of Cybertron, just a glimpse of it, because that’s where the animated series began and we wanted to begin this film in the same manner, to pay tribute to that and it was so much fun. I tried to stuff as much as I possible could into those opening moments, just because that’s the movie I’ve always wanted to see, I would love to see a movie like that, yeah.”
Last week, Sylvester Stallone posted this intimidating photo from the upcoming Rambo 5: Last Blood. It looks like the accompanying caption is a line from the movie, so it’s clear Rambo hasn’t lost his touch. Rambo 5 still doesn’t have a release date, but it’s expected sometime in 2019.
Here’s the synopsis for those who may not be keeping up:
“Rambo teams up with a journalist to track down and rescue a group of local girls that have been kidnapped by a Mexican sex trafficking ring, after trying to settle down to a quiet peaceful life stateside at the family ranch in Arizona after spending decades abroad.”

Right now Steve Carell is making the publicity rounds for the drama Welcome to Marwen, but he’s being asked about the possibility of future project. And there are some fans who want to see Carell back as dimwitted news anchor Brick Tamland in the Anchorman series. Even though he’s not down to return to The Office, he’s always up for more Anchorman. He told Variety:
“If they make another one, I’ll do another one. Those are really fun. That’s just hanging out with friends and being silly,”

There haven’t been any major updates for the next James Bond movie lately, but the 25th installment of the long-running spy franchise has hired a reliable crew member for the sequel directed by Cary Fukunaga.
HN Entertainment has word that Skyfall and Casino Royale 2nd unit director and 2nd unit director of photography Alexander Witt will return in the same capacity for James Bond 25. He’ll be working with the film’s primary director of photography Linus Sandgren (First Man, La La Land).
For those who don’t know, the 2nd unit director takes care of key establishing shots of city skylines, landscapes and other key locations. But they also take on stunt and action sequences that might be a little too tricky for the main camera team to handle.
