The Winkevoss twins are back in the news for their involvement in the cryptocurrency world, but this time they likely wouldn’t want to celebrate. The New York Times has learned that the two sued crypto investor and ex-convict Charlie Shrem for allegedly stealing 5,000 bitcoins in 2012 — no small amount when they’d be worth roughly $ 32 million today. The Winklevoss Capital Fund sent Shrem $ 250,000 in 2012 to buy bitcoins on its behalf, but delivered $ 189,000 worth based on the price at the time. The figure was lost in a larger dispute over an investment in Shrem’s BitInstant, but it’s clearly more important now.

Cameron Winklevoss said the lawsuit was prompted by learning of Shrem’s spending spree since leaving prison for his part in selling bitcoin to Silk Road drug buyers. In the space of the past year, Shrem bought a $ 2 million Florida house, two powerboats and two Maseratis (among other acquisitions) despite saying he went to prison virtually broke. He most likely made those purchases using the stolen bitcoins, according to the lawsuit. Shrem’s post-prison initiatives haven’t really panned out — both an initial coin offering and a crypto currency card ended up returning money to investors after promised partnerships didn’t materialize.

An investigator in the case has backed up the twins’ case, noting that 5,000 bitcoins were transferred to bitcoin wallets using addresses linked to Shrem.

Shrem’s attorney has denied the allegations in the lawsuit, claiming that “nothing could be further from the truth” and promising that Shrem would “vigorously” defend himself. This isn’t likely to deter the Winklevoss brothers, though. While the two hold nearly a billion dollars in cryptocurrency, $ 32 million is nothing to sneeze at. As it is, they’ve succeeded in freezing some of Shrem’s funds as part of the case — they’re already committed to getting to the bottom of what happened.

Two of the world’s most famous bitcoin investors, the Winklevoss twins, have now sued a longtime figure in the world of bitcoin, Charlie Shrem.

Shrem was released from prison in 2016 after he was convicted for aiding and abetting an unlicensed money-transfer business—sending $ 1 million in bitcoins that ended up on the notorious drug website, Silk Road.

According to the new lawsuit—which was filed in federal court in Manhattan in September 2018 and only recently unsealed—Winklevoss Capital Fund (WCF) hired Shrem in late 2012 to purchase bitcoins on its behalf.

A woman who for years went by the name “Bitcoin Maven” on localbitcoins.com—a peer-to-peer website for buying and selling anonymous bitcoins in-person—was sentenced Monday to 366 days in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and a $ 20,000 fine.

While selling bitcoins is not inherently illegal, doing so in such large volumes without keeping extensive records to mitigate money laundering is.

Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles called the case against Theresa Lynn Tetley—a 50-year-old former stockbroker who bought and sold several million dollars worth of bitcoins—the first of its kind in the region.

Child abuse imagery ‘found within Bitcoin’s blockchain’ https://briefnews.eu/child-abuse-imagery-found-within-bitcoins-blockchain/ https://briefnews.eu/child-abuse-imagery-found-within-bitcoins-blockchain/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 21:09:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/child-abuse-imagery-found-within-bitcoins-blockchain/ Child abuse imagery has been detected in Bitcoin’s blockchain, according to a new study. The discovery potentially puts cryptocurrency users at risk, as anyone who downloads a blockchain could be held liable for illegal content.

Researchers from RWTH Aachen University in Germany and the Data Protection Research Institute at Goethe University in Frankfurt found 1600 files, including texts and images, on blockchain. Among the data were instances of illegal pornography and serious privacy violations, the team says.

The researchers extracted content from the blockchain, converted it into readable files and presented their findings at the Financial Cryptography and Data Security conference in Curaçao earlier this month. Eight files with sexual content were detected, two of which were backups of link lists to child pornography, containing 274 links to websites, some 142 of which referred to Tor hidden services.

The remainder reportedly included an image depicting mild nudity of a young woman and five files which showed, described, or linked to mildly pornographic content. The origin of all this content is not clear. “Among these files there is clearly objectionable content such as links to child pornography, which is distributed to all Bitcoin participants,” the researchers’ paper states.

“Although court rulings do not yet exist, legislative texts from countries such as Germany, the UK, or the USA suggest that illegal content such as child pornography can make the blockchain illegal to possess for all users,” it concluded.

While spending bitcoin does not not necessarily require a copy of the blockchain, other transactions, such as some mining techniques, require that the user downloads either the full blockchain or chunks of it.

“As of now, this can affect at least 112 countries in which possessing content such as child pornography is illegal. This especially endangers the multi-billion dollar markets powering cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin,” the researchers said.

The authors identified five categories of content that may cause problems for anyone storing the blockchain: copyright violations; malware; privacy violations; politically sensitive content; and illegal and condemned content. According to the researchers, this is the first categorization of objectionable content, and survey of potential risks for users, if such content enters the blockchain.

Among the other files reportedly found were seven copyright violations and 609 transactions containing online public chat logs, emails, and forum posts discussing Bitcoin, including topics such as money laundering. In two instances, the researchers found the complete disclosure of another person’s personal information including phone numbers, addresses, bank accounts, passwords, and multiple online identities.

While the researchers didn’t actually find any malware, they noted its potential to spread via blockchain. Interpol previously warned that malware could be injected and hosted on the blockchain, with the chain potentially becoming a ‘safe haven’ for sharing child pornography.

Roman Matzutt, a member of the research team, told The Register that there is also potential for these issues to arise on other blockchains that allow content to be inserted, such as Litecoin and Ethereum.

After watching the riveting and entertaining nearly two-hour film documentary Effortless French, about the rise and fall of Mt. Gox, the infamous bitcoin exchange, there are two questions (one big, one small) that are never fully answered. (Full disclosure: I was interviewed for this film and appear in multiple scenes, but I did not see any rough cut or portion of the film until I was recently sent a screener.)

First, we still don’t have a complete understanding of exactly what happened at Mt. Gox. We probably never will. It’s clear that the exchange’s Tokyo-based now-ex-CEO Mark Karpelès doesn’t really seem to know what happened either. Nor, for that matter, does he seem to be emotionally affected by it in any way that was captured on film.

Launched as a bitcoin exchange in 2010, Mt. Gox quickly became the world’s most popular place to trade. But by February 2014, the site pulled the plug and filed for bankruptcy. Mt. Gox blamed its huge losses on hackers who had pilfered 850,000 bitcoins (now worth over $ 8 billion), taking advantage of a major security flaw. At the time, Karpelès became the most hated person in the bitcoin world for letting it happen right under his nose.

  • Iceland will likely use more electricity in the next year to mine bitcoin than it uses to power every single home in the country.
  • Bitcoin mining is booming in Iceland, and energy providers are worried they won’t be able to power new mining companies.
  • Iceland’s cool weather, cheap energy and super-fast networks have made the country a popular home for bitcoin mining.
  • Members of the government have proposed taxing profits made by bitcoin mining companies.

Iceland may soon use more electricity to mine bitcoin than it uses to power every home, according to an Icelandic energy expert.

The energy used by Iceland’s bitcoin mining market is experiencing “exponential growth,” and data centers may use more energy than all of the country’s homes in 2018, Johann Snorri Sigurbergsson from Icelandic energy company HS Orka told the BBC.

A congressional report released Wednesday lays out just how easy it is for Americans to buy the deadly opioid fentanyl from Chinese suppliers online and have it shipped to them via the government’s own postal service. The report also lays out just how difficult the practice will be to stop.

After Googling phrases such as “fentanyl for sale,” Senate investigators followed up with just six of the online sellers they found. This eventually led them to 500 financial transaction records, accounting for about $ 766 million worth of fentanyl entering the country and at least seven traceable overdose deaths.

The 100-page report was based on a year-long probe by a Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee. Overall, it confirms that supplies of the powerful and addictive opioid along with other illicit drugs are pouring in from China, which the Drug Enforcement Administration has long suspected.

Credit Suisse says bitcoin’s fair value is almost half its current price https://briefnews.eu/credit-suisse-says-bitcoins-fair-value-is-almost-half-its-current-price/ https://briefnews.eu/credit-suisse-says-bitcoins-fair-value-is-almost-half-its-current-price/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2018 01:06:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/credit-suisse-says-bitcoins-fair-value-is-almost-half-its-current-price/ stock tradersScott Olson/Getty Images

  • Credit Suisse analyst Damien Boey has developed a valuation method for Bitcoin combining two seemingly unique factors.
  • Those factors are: the size of the bitcoin network, and the yield spread on BBB rated bonds.
  • The Credit Suisse model settles on a fair value that is “almost half” its current price — around $ US6,000.

Credit Suisse analyst Damien Boey has developed a valuation method for Bitcoin combining two seemingly unique factors: the size of the bitcoin network, and the yield spread on BBB rated bonds.

Bitcoin slumped below $ US10,000 overnight in the wake of the latest market meltdown, but a short time ago prices had rallied back above $ US11,000.

The Credit Suisse model settles on a fair value that is “almost half” that — at $ US6,000.

network sizeCredit Suisse

To start with, Boey tested the thesis put forward by Fundstrat analyst Thomas Lee in November — that Bitcoin increases in value as more people use the network, similar to a social media giant such as Facebook.

Lee said his model — which is based on the number of Bitcoin users and average transaction value — accounted for around 94% of Bitcoin’s price movements over the past four years.

But Boey raised doubts about the statistical robustness of Lee’s equation. He said the evidence suggests that sometimes Bitcoin’s price leads the number of users, rather than the other way around.

So Boey added an extra feature: He found that Bitcoin prices have a strong negative correlation to BBB credit spreads — the difference between the yield on BBB rated debt US government bonds.

bbbCredit Suisse

“A 1% widening (narrowing) of BBB credit spreads causes a 100 logarithmic point decrease (increase) in Bitcoin’s value,” Boey said.

“In the extreme, this could imply that leverage has been used to fund Bitcoin investments through time.”

“Alternatively, it could simply mean that Bitcoin’s valuation is highly sensitive to whatever has driven credit spreads over the past few years (e.g., quantitative easing from central banks).”

In view of that, Boey offered a word of warning to Bitcoin investors, noting that there’s significantly more upside risks to credit spreads as global central banks begin to withdraw monetary stimulus.

“Perhaps unwittingly, Bitcoin investors have taken on extremely leveraged positions on credit spread compression,” Boey said.

“We believe they ought to be aware of their underlying exposures.”

Boey said there was a hint of irony in the fact Bitcoin’s mysterious creator — Satoshi Nakamoto — created Bitcoin as an antidote to central-bank controlled monetary systems prone to manipulation.

However, based on Bitcion’s correlation to credit spreads, it appears the quantitative easing programs of global central banks may in fact have served to prop up Bitcoin’s value.

Despite that, Boey said central bankers “seem a little threatened” by Bitcoin, highlighting RBA Governor Lowe’s recent comments calling it a speculative bubble.

If yield spreads widen and regulatory authorities continue to crack down on cryptocurrency usage due to the threats posed by alternative payment systems, then Bitcoin’s price may fall significantly further.

Until then, Boey said Bitcoin represents a trading opportunity if investors can find a way to effectively model the dynamics of the market.

Billions worth Mt. Gox exchange four years ago could be recovered, but there are powerful forces against it, according to bitcoin entrepreneur William Mook.

The Tokyo-based virtual currency exchange handled around 80 percent of global bitcoin trades. Mt. Gox shut down and went bankrupt in February 2014 after suffering the biggest cryptocurrency heist on record.

The exchange said it had lost about 850,000 bitcoins – then worth around half a billion US dollars – and $ 28 million in cash from its Japanese bank accounts.

Mt. Gox blamed hackers for its lost bitcoins, pointing to a software security flaw. Later in March, it said that had found 200,000 of the missing tokens.

Not long after the exchange’s collapse, the public was shocked by the death of a virtual currency exchange First Meta’s CEO. The 28-year-old Autumn Radtke was found dead, having fallen from her apartment building in Singapore. Some media reported it was a suicide while others referred to it as a “questionable financial-sector death.”

“Autumn Radtke and her team and others, quietly found half the bitcoins that were supposedly stolen by Mt. Gox,” Mook told RT exclusively.

That shows the strength of the blockchain technology, he said, adding “We had hopes the balance of the ‘lost’ Mt. Gox coins could be recovered as well.”

According to him, Radtke was found dead shortly after a Japanese court was advised of the finding. “Her team and others associated with the effort disappeared. Websites closed down. This is a frightening development. That person and that team, me included, were frightened off.”

The loss at the Mt. Gox exchange was judged by some investigators to have been a cyberheist, but it remained unsolved and pummeled bitcoin prices at the time. It was a significant setback for bitcoin with the value of the cryptocurrency plunging to $ 440 after Mt. Gox went offline. The value of bitcoin then slid to a 3-month low after the currency reached record highs above $ 1000 at the end of November 2014.

“Think about what a successful return of Mt. Gox’s stolen bitcoins would have done to the value of bitcoin in the spring of 2014?” said Mook, adding “We would have seen $ 10,000 per bitcoin by that summer.”

However, Mook insists the case “does not change the nature of the blockchain technology or of bitcoin. It merely delays its adoption.”

The exchange’s bankruptcy has prompted Japan’s government to decide how to treat bitcoin, with local regulators starting licensing cryptocurrency exchanges. Japan has become the first country to regulate digital currency exchanges at the national level.

The Japanese regulations have required banks and other businesses to verify identities, keep records and report suspicious transactions.

Meanwhile, a group of Mt. Gox creditors has recently urged a Tokyo court to allow the exchange to emerge from bankruptcy now that its bitcoins have rocketed in value to more than $ 3 billion. They argued the 40-fold price surge since the exchange’s collapse means the company’s assets now dwarf its liabilities. However, depositors raise fears bitcoin’s recent rally would allow its disgraced former chief executive Mark Karpeles to emerge as a multibillionaire.

Karpeles who’s currently fighting charges of embezzlement in Tokyo, controls the company that owns almost 90 percent of Mt. Gox. At the current bitcoin price, Mt. Gox could meet all its liabilities and, under Japanese law, Karpeles would then receive his share of the surplus, a theoretical fortune worth well in excess of $ 2 billion.

It is impossible to say exactly how many bitcoins are being hoarded and how many will never be recovered. According to estimates from blockchain analysis company Chainalysis, between 2.78 million and 3.79 million bitcoins worth up to $ 50 billion at current prices are already gone for good.

The findings were based on a detailed empirical analysis of the blockchain where all bitcoin transactions are recorded. Chainalysis used age and transaction metrics to work out which bitcoin hasn’t been moved in a very long time.

The firm also estimated that some two percent of all bitcoins traded throughout 2017 were lost. That accounts for a billion dollars’ worth of the digital currency.

Such losses are expected to continue, but they should gradually become rarer, Chainalysis said, explaining it that owners are taking added care of their cryptocurrency as its value spiked during the year.

Analysts say one of the main reasons behind the lost cryptocurrencies is forgotten passwords because storing bitcoins works in such a way they can’t be recovered without crucial information.

Having a cryptocurrency “wallet” on a hard drive or flash drive means it is protected from being stolen online. However, if the owner loses access to the device, the coins are also lost forever. Many early miners and investors have misplaced the currency before it was ever worth anything.

Experts from Chainalysis suggest around a million of the lost bitcoins could belong to the cryptocurrency’s mysterious inventor Satoshi Nakamoto. His fortune is thought to currently stand at over $ 17 billion and could turn him into the world’s first trillionaire. According to media reports, Nakamoto has never spent a single coin.

To recover their lost or forgotten passwords desperate bitcoin investors are turning to different methods, including hypnosis and ‘brute force’ attacks with a supercomputer. The so-called crypto-hypnotists say they could help people recall forgotten passwords or find misplaced storage devices.

Investor Philip Neumeier bought 15 bitcoins for roughly $ 260 in 2013 when he wanted to accept the virtual currency on his e-commerce site. Trying to recover the long-forgotten password to his cache, which has skyrocketed in value to nearly $ 200,000, the distraught investor considered hypnosis but decided instead to build a supercomputer to crack the code.

The editor of Wire and founder of the website Boing Boing, Mark Frauenfelder published a story on his four-month unsuccessful attempts to recover the password of a bitcoin wallet with the help of hypnosis. He finally got access to the wallet after appealing to hackers.

However, nothing could help James Howells, a British IT worker who claims he threw away a hard drive with 7,500 bitcoins on it in 2013. Worth $ 130 at the time, their value today – around $ 100 million.
