“Number one: no one is like me.” — Harley Quinn

“They say if you want to tell a story right, you gotta start at the beginning,” chirps the titular heroine in the opening moments of Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.

Director Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey is a jittery, glittery joyride through loss, independence, sisterhood and gory vengeance. Graphics burst forward at every opportunity, bright and multicoloured, neon and shining. Like its central figure, they cannot be contained. At the film’s head and tail are a perky cartoon prologue and a vibrant, illustrated closer, respectively, created by two different teams and linked through colour and typography.

Kicking off the film is a spritely sequence by Warner Bros. Animation that exudes Powerpuff energy and neatly sums up the punchy PhD’s provenance, from bouncing babe to Joker paramour and the events of Suicide Squad, so that, thankfully, nobody has to watch that again.

The film’s mouthful of a title appears after Quinn drives a truck carrying flammables into a chemical refinery. The collision ignites a gorgeous explosion of enormous proportions and the title logo, produced by studio Filmograph, shimmers darkly in the sky above.

It is Quinn’s spunky voice – Margot Robbie delivering a cracked Brooklyn cheerleader fuelled by egg sandwiches and rage – that leads the way through this balls-to-the-wall post-break-up bonanza. As main characters appear on screen, their names appear alongside them, customized to the individual. Minor characters seeking revenge are given graphic names and grievances scribbled in red, blue, yellow, and hot green, an extension of Quinn’s scattered psyche.

After delivering one manic melee after another, the film finishes with a main-on-end title sequence doused in vast swaths of colour and looped in loose, agitated lines that blink, swing and bleed into the shapes of key setpieces. To create the end sequence, design studio Shine took inspiration from the film’s production design and turned to a tool that hasn’t historically been used for big-budget Hollywood productions: Procreate, Apple’s graphics software for iPad. RELATED STORIES

One of the exciting things about the upcoming Birds of Prey movie is getting to see Harley Quinn on her own, instead of as Joker’s sidekick. But if you can’t wait, there’s already a series that portrays just that: DC Universe’s Harley Quinn.

The adult animated series, which premiered on the DC Universe streaming service back in November, has become increasingly enjoyable every week. The pilot introduces us to Harley Quinn (voiced by The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco), who is happily in love with her boyfriend and partner-in-crime Joker (Alan Tudyk)… until he abandons her in Arkham Asylum. Well, that’s not entirely accurate: throughout the year spent in prison, in which Joker never shows up, Harley continues to be in love, to pine after him, steadfastly believing that he’s going to break her out eventually. Her new best friend Poison Ivy (Bless This Mess‘ Lake Bell) repeatedly tries to convince Harley to leave Joker, to no avail; even after Ivy breaks Harley out, Harley manages to get sucked back into the Clown Prince of Crime’s life. It takes some trickery for Harley to finally see the truth, claiming her emancipation from Joker and aiming to become a member of the criminal underworld on her own terms. Relatedly, the movie’s full title is Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn); it was influenced by Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner’s comic book “reboot” of the character created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for the animated Batman series.

Much of TV’s Harley Quinn functions as a very adult version of a Saturday morning cartoon, with familiar characters and animation styles, but one that’s relentlessly full of swears and graphic violence — watch too many episodes in a row and you might see the bright red blood when you close your eyes. It also takes a decidedly adult and intelligent approach to its subject matter, even when the show gets pretty dumb. The ridiculous jokes (some of which don’t land) and cartoonish violence (I cringed a number of times) is balanced out by the series’ admirable insistence on depicting the realities of abusive relationships, and the way you can warp your own thoughts and memories to make them fit into a narrative that feels safe — even when everyone on the outside is constantly telling you otherwise.

Harley Quinn’s Birds of Prey crew includes Renee Montoya, Huntress, Cassandra Cain and Black Canary

Harley Quinn doesn’t always work—some of the side characters are more eye-rolling than entertaining, and sometimes it feels as if the themes are being beat into your head with Harley’s giant wooden mallet, But when it does, it’s almost exhilarating to watch. The series’ commentary on sexism and misogyny is done through its own unique world. The third episode, “So You Need A Crew?,” centers on how no one will give Harley her own squad because she’s no longer with Joker, and how there’s a glass ceiling for female supervillains. When Harley meets Queen of Fables (Wanda Sykes!), she gets schooled on the unfair standards and limits put on women; in short, women are accepted as long as they don’t get too powerful. When Queen of Fables dared to try and become more powerful than male supervillains, she was punished disproportionately in contrast to the men who are simply thrown into Arkham. There’s also a difference in labels: a man robbing a bank is considered a “criminal mastermind” whereas a woman doing the same is simply a “crazy bitch.”

Much of what works about Harley Quinn is the fact that it never forgets how much trauma is built into Harley because of her past relationship with Joker (and even further back, as the series gives Harley new elements in her backstory). In “Being Harley Quinn,” Harley realizes that she can’t make basic decisions because she has no idea who she is without the abuser she was tied to for so long. As we literally dive into her mind, Harley investigates her own subconscious, which is littered with her ex, and takes a peek at her repressed memories, where she learns an uncomfortable truth.

At the same time, Harley Quinn remains endlessly fun. She does eventually assemble a ragtag crew of misfits — including a reimagined King Shark, though I do wish her crew didn’t include any men—and their criminal attempts help move the season along. There’s a wonderful friendship between Harley and Ivy, who become roommates, and which frequently sees a patient Ivy tries to rein in a naive, impulsive Harley. All of the voice actors are great, particularly Cuoco, but also Christoper Meloni’s sad-sack Commissioner Gordon or James Adomian’s take on Bane, which became an instant favorite and deserves a spin-off of his own.

But the center of it is always Harley, a reimagined antiheroine bouncing around with a childlike enthusiasm for mischief. It’s so easy to root for Harley despite her, uh, murderous streak, because it’s also so easy to see her simply as someone aiming to become her own woman — and yes, her own criminal — independent from her abusive ex.

Arrow’s Birds of Prey-Inspired Episode Reveals First Photos — ‘All the Women Are in the Forefront,’ Raves EP https://briefnews.eu/arrows-birds-of-prey-inspired-episode-reveals-first-photos-all-the-women-are-in-the-forefront-raves-ep/ https://briefnews.eu/arrows-birds-of-prey-inspired-episode-reveals-first-photos-all-the-women-are-in-the-forefront-raves-ep/#respond Tue, 09 Apr 2019 01:41:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arrows-birds-of-prey-inspired-episode-reveals-first-photos-all-the-women-are-in-the-forefront-raves-ep/

Birds of a badass feather flock together in the first photos from Arrow‘s next Season 7 episode, which unites Laurel, Felicity, Dinah and even Sara Lance in a story about potentially derailed redemption.

In the episode “Lost Canary” (airing Monday, April 15, now at 9/8c), Earth-Two’s Laurel (played by Katie Cassidy) — after being accused of murder and having her criminal past exposed — goes “full Black Siren” and teams up with criminal acquaintance Shadow Thief (guest star Carmel Amit) for a crime spree around Star City. While Dinah (Juliana Harkavy) aims to bring Laurel in, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) refuses to give up on her friend and tries everything to get through to her, even summoning Sara Lance (Legends of Tomorrow‘s Caity Lotz) for help.

“I know we did a Canary-esque episode in a previous season” — Season 2’s “Birds of Prey,” which pitted Sara and Laurel against the Huntress — “but we have been talking about a Birds of Prey-inspired episode for years, and have it really focused on the women,” showrunner Beth Schwartz tells TVLine. “I was very determined to make that happen this season.”

Reflecting on how the anticipated team-up came out, Schwartz says, “I think that my favorite part is just having all the women in the forefront, and they sort of have each other’s backs.  Instead of having them be against each other, they work together to try to help each other. You don’t get to see that very often, and that’s a very important message that I just really wanted to have.” (With reporting by Vlada Gelman)

Update: This week, Ars staffers from across the country gather together in real life for our annual meeting, Technicon. We’re supposed to be talking more than typing, so we’re resurfacing a few classic Ars stories just in case the front page gets lonely. This one, which originally ran on November 22, 2015, centers on a few aviation/space pioneers and feels particularly apt for Veterans Day weekend. It appears unchanged below.

The last three flightworthy WB-57 airplanes in existence arrayed themselves on a runway near Johnson Space Center in Houston this past week, as if they were dinosaurs brought to life. The long-winged aircraft look something like prehistoric creatures, too, measuring just a stubby 21 meters long compared to an overly broad 37.5-meter wingspan. It had been four decades since as many as three of the great, superannuated birds soared together.

But then they did. One by one, the WB-57s slowly rolled down the runway at Ellington Airport and then began a slow climb upward into resplendent clear, blue skies. They flew again, thanks to a restoration program by NASA to bring a third WB-57 back from its boneyard. “It’s quite a day,” Charlie Mallini, who manages the WB-57 program for NASA, told Ars.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?

This week we meet some brothers who share a special bond, see how emotions can become weapons, steal a kid for fun, break the cycle of sex addiction, and meet an offspring we didn’t know we had.

Tito and the Birds

Brazilians Gustavo Steinberg, Gabriel Bitar, and André Catoto tell an animated tale that seems reminiscent of Monsters, Inc. in how it weaponizes emotions.

Tito is a shy 10-year-old boy who lives with his mother. Suddenly, an unusual epidemic starts to spread, making people sick whenever they get scared. Tito quickly discovers that the cure is somehow related to his missing father’s research on bird song. He embarks on a journey to save the world from the epidemic with his friends. Tito’s search for the antidote becomes a quest for his missing father and for his own identity.

The trailer promises an adventure that departs from the usual animated fare audience have been getting in the past couple of decades. The style seems more artistic, rough around the edges (literally), but infused with the kind of originality that kids ought to devour feverishly.

All Creatures Here Below

Directed by Collin Schiffli, and starring David Dastmalchian and Karen Gillan, the trailer is one of the best I’ve seen all month. Written by Dastmalchian himself, a heartbreaking premise manages to keep you moving along effortlessly:

Gensan (David Dastmalchian) and Ruby (Karen Gillan) struggle to thrive in the face of abject poverty. When Gensan loses his job and is forced to break the law they escape and seek refuge in Kansas City, a place Ruby’s deeply afraid of. Ruby’s indelible choices, and desire to make a family, complicate their journey to freedom.

The story beats are telegraphed nicely without giving a hint where we’re going to end. If Dastmalchian’s written work for the incredibly powerful Animals that came out a few years ago is any indication of this film’s quality, I am prepared and expecting something great.

Unlovable

A drama? A musical? John Hawkes playing the gee-tar? Give it to me. Coming from executive producers Jay & Mark Duplass, this movie seems to fit perfectly within Duplass universe. It’s a small story, with low stakes, but it leans heavily into the actors bringing something incredible to their roles. Director Suzi Yoonessi isn’t doing anything extraordinary here with how she’s capturing what’s happening before us, but the trailer shows us how we’re going to be more focused on the characters themselves.

Weightless

This trailer dramatically crushes it while being narratively devastating, all in just a minute and a half. Director Jaron Albertin masterfully mixes a vérité style in a way that feels like you’re watching both something fictional and very much real. The mix works exceptionally well as the trailer blends these two styles effortlessly. We get just enough narrative to set the table, and everything that comes after that only helps to bolster the case why this is a little film that could use some attention. The music is lovely, and the shot of the father/son in the car as they tear down a dragstrip together looks like it’s worth the price of admission alone.

Don’t Be a Dick About It

Yes, the title catches your eye, but director Ben Mullinkosson’s documentary about two brothers actually looks fascinating. What we’re exploring here is the bond that two brothers share, a topic that may seem facile at first, but that misses the point. The trailer subtly captures that unique relationship that exists between siblings. It’s sweet, tender, funny, and looks like an excellent slice-of-life portrait of brothers in arms.

Nota bene: If you have any suggestions of trailers for possible inclusion in this column, even have a trailer of your own to pitch, please let me know by sending me a note at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com or look me up via Twitter at @Stipp

‘Birds of Prey’ Considering Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley for Black Mask https://briefnews.eu/birds-of-prey-considering-ewan-mcgregor-and-sharlto-copley-for-black-mask/ https://briefnews.eu/birds-of-prey-considering-ewan-mcgregor-and-sharlto-copley-for-black-mask/#respond Thu, 27 Sep 2018 21:20:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/birds-of-prey-considering-ewan-mcgregor-and-sharlto-copley-for-black-mask/ birds of prey cast black mask

Time for some more (potential) Birds of Prey casting news. Warner Bros. is in the process of casting the female leads of the film, but they also have to lock down someone to play villain Black Mask. Rumor has it that both Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley are being considered for the part, but the casting process has just begun. More on the potential Birds of Prey cast additions below.

Black Mask, a Batman villain who has never graced the big screen, is the villain for the Birds of Prey movie, but no one knows who is playing him yet. According to one report, Sam Rockwell is the man the producers and filmmakers want for the role, but Rockwell is unavailable. So who will don Black Mask’s famous black skull visage? Two names in the running: Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley.

Of these two, McGregor is probably the stronger choice (he’s a better actor0, but Copley is good at playing unhinged psychos as well (see: Elysium). Black Mask, aka Roman Sionis, first appeared in Batman comics in 1985. He’s traditionally portrayed as violent, brutal and even sadistic. He also has a thing for masks, as you probably guessed.

Cathy Yan is helming the female-driven superhero film, which brings back Margot Robbie as Harley Queen. The other day, Mary Elizabeth Winstead was cast as Huntress, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell joined the film in the role of Black Canary. Other parts waiting to be cast include Detective Renee Montoya, a cop with the Gotham PD, and Cassandra Cain, one of the many Batgirls who is being reimagined as a 12-year-old in the film.

Birds of Prey will hit theaters on February 7, 2020.

Opening Banter: Peter made the mistake of asking twitter for health advice.

In The News:

In The Mail Bag:

  • Lored in Worcester MA writes in “Hey guys. Love your podcast. Listen to it daily. I heard you guys talking about the new subtitle for the Girl in the Spider’s Web. I thought someone would have mentioned it by now, but this book is not part of the original trilogy that Stieg Larsson wrote. As you probably know, he passed away after completing the first three books. This is not a direct sequel to the Girl with a Dragon Tatoo. I wonder if Sony is trying to make sure people know it’s set in the same universe and not a stand alone movie. Anyways, that’s just my 2 cents. Keep up the good work.”
  • Scott A from Alameda, CA writes in “Hey Gang –   I implore each of you to check out The Rider. It is a masterful film. While I did not connect with the subject matter as much as other films, the artistry of Chloe Zhao, her cinematographer, and editor are what truly elevate this film. Using a wonderful juxtaposition of wide shots to emphasize the emptiness of the South Dakota landscape with extreme close-ups touching upon the claustrophobia of Brady’s tragic situation, the film highlighted the type of director that Zhao is. The Rider was in my top 5 at the half-year mark and while it may have since slipped down, it is definitely a film worth watching. I think Chris, especially, would love it.   A high recommend and I think Marvel hiring Zhao is an inspired choice.   Keep up the great work!”
  • In response to our Predator episode:
    • Prince from New York City writes in “I will agree that everything went downhill at the Cadillac commercial in the woods but your complaints seemed…looney.  Plot holes in a Predator movie? Really? We enjoyed the movie (except the final scene). It was fast and fun and dumb. You don’t go to Applebees for fine dining. And you don’t go to Predator movies thinking there will be no plot-holes.  Tighten up.”
    • Jacob C from Mississippi writes “Peter,  I just listened to the predator spoiler episode and I cannot believe you were made fun of so much by how confused you were in the movie. I totally and completely agree with you on every point you made. The movie was edited extremely horribly and I couldn’t tell what was going on half the time. I shame Brad for making fun of you with a nerd voice. That was uncalled for ?. It made no sense and it was a trash movie. Also the depiction of Tourette’s syndrome was extremely bad. My dad and I both have Tourette’s and we laughed the whole movie at Thomas Jane’s depiction of it because of how inaccurate and offensive it was. Tourette’s is rarely that severe, and when it is that bad it doesn’t look like that. Literally it’s only purpose was to set up some really bad jokes. Anyway I just felt the need to defend you because I can’t see how anyone could think this movie is good in any way. I’m very disappointed in Shane Black. Thank you for standing firm in your opinions.  Love the show!”
  • Is anyone excited for Venom?
    • Michael Rode says “Tom Hardy usually chooses wisely (that of course looks like it will change).   People think it looks like a more scary version of Deadpool.”
    • Scott A. from Alameda, CA writes in: “Hi Peter and Gang!  Let me start by saying how much I love the podcast. It is a daily treat which I eagerly await each day.  Now as to your bashing of Venom. I am indeed one of these mysterious folks you have been seeking that is excited to see Venom. I wanted to take a moment to tell you why.   Let me start by saying that I acknowledge the movie is probably going to be really bad and the trailers have looked terrible. So why oh why am I excited for the film. Well to quote the amazing Jeff Cannata, I am a “Marvel Zombie from way back.” I fell into comics in the early 90’s and it was Spider-Man and a certain symbiote villian that directly hooked me from moment one. For us 1990 Spider-Man lovers, Venom was the go-to villian. His character design, his intensity, his ability to toy with Spider-Man made him a character who you rooted for almost as much as the main hero.   I had his trading card, his action figure, and I loved his depiction on the 1994 Spider-Man animated series. When it was announced he would be in Spider-Man 3, I was dubious because I felt he was being shoehorned into the film. As it turned out, that was exactly the situation and his appearance was terrible.   Yes I can hear you arguing that this film looks equally bad if not worse. Here is the counter argument, the character design of Venom in this film is perfect and that is enough for me. I will use my A-List to see the movie and will probably complain about it afterwards, but for that first moment of seeing a true representation of Venom on screen will bring me such joy that even if just for a split second, 1991-Scott will reappear and smile.   I know that I’m not alone in my love for Venom and I feel that is what will be dragging the majority of us to the theater. Hope that answers your question and helps you on your search.  Keep up the great work and I look forward to many more episodes.”
