President Donald Trump’s Twitter page can be an alarming and confusing place at the best of times. His latest instance of indecision over war or world peace has sparked questions about his mental health, however. The president began his morning on Wednesday by warning Russia to “get ready” for “nice and new and ‘smart’” missiles that would soon be fired at Syria. Just a week ago, he talked about withdrawing US troops from the country, but that’s neither here nor there. Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 11, 2018 READ MORE: ‘Bigger lunatic than Bush’: Twitter reacts to Trump missile threat Less than an hour later, Trump followed up his threatening tweet by saying that he wants to improve US-Russia relations, asking for all nations to “work together” and calling for stopping the “arms race.” Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War. There is no reason for this. Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together. Stop the arms race? — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 11, 2018 READ MORE: US relationship with Russia ‘worse than it’s ever been’ – Trump The bizarre, lightning-quick turnaround on major foreign policy sparked a frenzy on Twitter, with many people questioning the president’s mental health. Some went as far as to suggest that he may be suffering from bipolar disorder. YOU JUST CALLED RUSSIA OUT LIKE 20 MINUTES AGO! ARE YOU BIPOLAR? — Taylor Evans (@Yaddayadda723) April 11, 2018 Man, you are totally bipolar. In a tweet right before you threatened Russia with missiles and now you are holding out olive branch. You are truly nuts. — RJP (@Rogue_JPS) April 11, 2018 Exactly! He’s like a bipolar, abusive spouse. — FBR Percolato (@Percolato) April 11, 2018 Are you bipolar? You just tweeted about bombing Syria. But if you’re looking for the oddest scene in the union, look no further than the land of cheese curds and campy beer. Yes, we’re talking about you, Badger State.
“But I love you, babe!”
We have a President who is bipolar in the White House.
Wisconsin has the widest ideological gap between its two U.S. senators in the nation.
That’s according to the GovTrack.us ideological rankings, which give Republican Sen. Ron Johnson an 84 percent conservative score — and Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin just 14 percent. It’s one example of the extreme shifts in the state that voted for Obama twice only to then back Trump. Wisconsin has been topsy-turvy in recent history, with Democrats experiencing wave elections in 2006, 2008 and 2012 and Republicans turning the tables in 2010, 2014 and 2016. Now liberals are saying that America’s Dairyland is poised for a shift once more, away from its now Republican-dominated legislature … but will that forecast hold true for the nation’s most bipolar state?
For an answer, it helps to look again at that Johnson-Baldwin divide. The two could not be more different: Johnson almost always votes in line with Donald Trump, while Baldwin only backs the president’s stance a fifth of the time, according to an analysis by FiveThirtyEight.com. Yet the same state that elected Johnson in 2010 went ahead and backed Baldwin just two years later. Why? In part because it was a slightly different set of voters, motivated by the allure of a presidential year, which makes a huge difference in a place where statewide elections have often come down to a few thousand votes.
Turnout should be lower this year, since it’s midterm season, although the political winds seem to favor a Democratic incumbent like Baldwin to prevail. “The vibe has been that, since the election, Democrats have super-jazzed-up the turnout,” says J.R. Ross, editor of the news service WisPolitics. That’s been especially true in the suburbs. In early January, Democrat Patty Schachtner flipped a Senate District 10 seat held by the GOP since 2000. Her success was buoyed by driving up the vote in the Wisconsin suburbs of St. Paul and Minneapolis, traditional Republican-leaning areas. The result was “an alarm klaxon for Republicans at every level of the ballot,” celebrated Carolyn Fiddler, political editor of the liberal blog Daily Kos, in a release sent after the upset. “Wisconsin Democrats have a steep hill to climb, but the wind is definitely at their backs,” she tells OZY.
Despite Wisconsin’s recent obvious status as a seesaw state, longtime political watchers argue the potential for shifts were always there for the state. “We were not as blue as people think we’d been,” Ross notes. The state holds simultaneous claims for being the birthplace of both progressivism and the Republican party. Yes, there was a liberal streak: Cheeseheads voted for the Democratic presidential candidate every election from Walter Mondale in 1988 to Obama in 2012. But on the statewide level, Republicans such as governors Tommy Thompson and Scott Walker continued to win elections.
The tallies were always close. And when turnout in cities like Madison and Milwaukee lags, urbanites can be swallowed by rural folks — and those latter voters have become more consolidated around the Republican flag in the last decade, says Barry Burden, director of the Elections Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Obama’s success in the state, and Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016, proved, “Yeah, we could be very blue, but you have to excite and engage the base,” Burden says.
Wisconsin’s parties are also becoming further separated in principle. On the Democratic side, the state went for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 primary and continues to support Baldwin as a liberal lion in the Senate. Meanwhile, the majority of the Republicans holding power now, including Walker, were ushered in as part of the national Tea Party wave. Both sides retain a purist mentality: “We’ve already had our purification of parties. We don’t have a moderate wing in the base,” Burden says. With polarization on the rise nationally too, maybe the Wisconsin way isn’t crazy — maybe it’s just the new normal, only we haven’t realized it yet.

The upcoming Winter Olympics will be very different for Travis Gerrits, regardless of the Canadian freestyle skier’s performance.
The Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea come just months after the 26-year-old from Milton, Ont., publicly announced he is living with bipolar disorder.
“I don’t like to say ‘suffer’ because we learn to control it and it can kind of help you in a way,” Gerrits says, adding that “everything has been very very positive” since he first shared his story on Facebook in August.
“It was difficult to open up to everyone about that because of fear of losing that support. But knowing that nothing has changed and I only have more encouragement and more positive vibes from everyone, it’s just helping my performance greatly.”
Canadian Travis Gerrits goes public with bipolar disorder2:53
In the lead-up to the 2014 Olympics, Gerrits collected a gold and two silvers on the World Cup aerials circuit and won silver at the world championships, but it was a struggle at times.
“In Sochi I was undiagnosed with the fact I was bipolar. I was living with depression, with mania, with all of these things,” says Gerrits, who finished seventh at those Games. “My results definitely came in spurts and peaks, especially when I was feeling great or feeling stable.
“The same was true with poor performances when I was a little bit down.”
After being officially diagnosed with bipolar I disorder in November of 2014, it took Gerrits “quite a few years” of managing treatments — including medication and working with both a psychologist and a sports psychologist — before speaking publicly about it.
“This isn’t something I want to control my life anymore,” Gerrits says. “I want to take control of my actions and my future.”
The mental and physical preparation for the Olympics is strenuous under any set of circumstances, but Gerrits is confident in his approach to these Games.
In addition to the support he’s received from family, friends and aerials luminaries like Nicolas Fontaine and Yves Laroche, Gerrits continued to practice over the summer at a water ramp facility in Quebec City. While good for the aerial aspect of his sport, he admits there’s no substitute for snow.
“It’s a different animal completely,” Gerrits says. “You’re landing on a 36-degree pitch rather than flat water. There are a lot less variables that control and affect your speed as well.”
Managing the fluid conditions requires communication from coaches on the ground, but ultimately instinct and feel are the deciding factors when the wind changes during an event.
“We’re in the air literally three seconds and I have a good… not just air sense but sense of my own speed,” he says.
“So if [during] my takeoff I was leaning back a little bit too far, you can feel that extra flip rotation while you’re in the air and you have to do everything you can to spot your landing and make adjustments on the fly while you’re in the air.”
Qualifying for the Games in Pyeongchang is only one part of Gerrits’s life as an Olympian. He’s always enjoyed sharing his competition experiences at schools, but now knows he has another story to tell.
“I hope to inspire more people, whether it’s to get the help they need or just find that support system,” Gerrits says, adding that he’s already had a skier on the developmental team reach out to him for support.
“I kind of live for that, when you can clearly see that you’ve made a change in someone’s life for the better.”
He sees this as a way to pay forward the support he’s received from athletes like Fontaine and Laroche and sponsors like RBC, which provides a reliable support network, and Visa, which helped cover his studies at Stanford.
“Now I feel like it’s my turn to help others in any way that I can.”

The study, by the University of Warwick, found that adolescents smoking cannabis two to three times a week at the age of 17 have an increased chance of developing hypomania in their early twenties.
Cannabis was found to be an independent risk factor for future hypomania, which gives people periods of elated moods, over-active and excitable behaviour, as well as reduced sleep. All symptoms are commonly experienced as part of bipolar disorder.
Lead author Dr Steven Marwaha, from Warwick Medical School, said: “Cannabis use in young people is common and associated with psychiatric disorders. However, the prospective link between cannabis use and bipolar disorder symptoms has rarely been investigated.
“Adolescent cannabis use may be an independent risk factor for future hypomania, and the nature of the association suggests a potential causal link,” Marwaha added.
He suggested the findings should be considered part of the prevention schemes aimed at minimizing the risk of young people developing bipolar disorders.
“As such it might be a useful target for indicated prevention of hypomania,” the researcher said.
The research, published in the Schizophrenia Bulletin, analysed 3,370 participants from a previous study. They were asked whether they had used cannabis at the age of 17 and, if so, how often over a 12-month period.
A questionnaire then tested them on their maniacal symptoms, including thoughts, emotions and behavior while under the effect of the drug.
Marijuana is the most commonly consumed drug in the UK, with 6.5 percent of people aged 16-59 taking the drug in the past year. That accounts for around 2.1 million people.

On Monday, prosecutors with the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office began an inquest into the events surrounding the death of Terrill Thomas and whether any staff of the Milwaukee County Jail should be criminally charged for his treatment, according to the Journal Sentinel.
In April 2016, Thomas, 38, was arrested and taken to the jail on charges that he fired shots at a man, then drove to a casino and fired two rounds while inside the building. His family has said Thomas, a bipolar man, was experiencing a mental breakdown at the time.
During his seven days without water at the jail, Thomas never requested medical attention. Staff eventually found Thomas dead from severe dehydration, a medical examiner concluded. Thomas was one of four people, including a newborn, that died at the Milwaukee County Jail in a six-month period in 2016.
Prosecutors have indicated that they believe jail policy was violated in the case, the Sentinel reported. The inquest will allow prosecutors to publicly question witnesses before a jury, which will then offer a recommendation into whether a probable cause exists to then press charges. Prosecutors can then choose whether or not to follow the jury’s verdict.
Assistant District Attorney Kurt Benkley said Monday that Thomas’ bipolar disorder, a condition the jail staff knew about, according to the Sentinel, rendered him “unable to tell people about his basic needs” while in jail.
In his opening statement, Benkley said surveillance video evidence indicates that three jail officers cut off water to Thomas’ cell as discipline for the inmate’s flooding of another cell.
The officers never documented the action or told supervisors, effectively allowing the water supply to remain turned off as Thomas’ health deteriorated.
“This order to shut off Mr. Thomas’ water was highly irregular and contrary to standard operating procedure in the jail,” Benkley said, according to the Sentinel.

Thomas did not receive water with meals in line with jail policy which dictates that inmates receive water through their cell sinks, prosecutors said. He lost about 35 pounds in the seven days he was in jail.
Other inmates held at the jail during Thomas’ incarceration have said they complained to jail staff about Thomas’ condition. At least 20 officers worked a shift during Thomas’ stay at the jail, the Sentinel reported.
Officers are expected to testify during the weeklong inquest that they were not aware of the water cut-off.

“If someone requests, ‘Can I get my water turned on?’ and I find out their water is off, I turn it on,” said one officer, Decorie Smith.
Smith said he was personally unaware of Thomas’ situation. Smith and his lieutenant said Monday that the sheriff’s office does not allow indefinite shut-off of an inmate’s drinking water.
Following the inquest procedure, jurors will address three questions, Benkley said, according to WITI. “What was the cause of Mr. Thomas’ death? Was it the result of criminal activity? And if so, who committed the crime?”
