Apple’s new iPhones come with a brand new chip called the A12 Bionic. The company says it’s the industry’s first 7-nanometer chip and contains 6.9 billion transistors. That statement is true, to an extent — it’s the first chip that will be commercially available to the public. Last month, Huawei also announced a 7-nanometer chip called the Kirin 980. It will debut in the company’s Mate 20 flagship, and sub-brand Honor’s Magic 2 sometime in the future. Both Apple and Huawei partnered with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturer Company (TSMC) to develop the high-powered silicon, which is why they’re debuting so close to one another.

Inside the A12 Bionic is a six-core CPU, comprising of two performance cores and four efficiency cores. The two performance cores are supposed to be 15 percent faster and 40 percent more power efficient than their equivalent in the A11 Bionic. The efficiency cores, meanwhile, consume 50 percent less power than Apple’s previous chip. While its predecessor had a two-core Neural Engine, the new A12 will chip with an eight-core version that’s capable of crunching five trillion operations every second. In practice, this should mean additional processing power for intensive apps.

Brain interface adds sense of presence to bionic limbs https://briefnews.eu/brain-interface-adds-sense-of-presence-to-bionic-limbs/ https://briefnews.eu/brain-interface-adds-sense-of-presence-to-bionic-limbs/#respond Thu, 15 Mar 2018 02:44:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brain-interface-adds-sense-of-presence-to-bionic-limbs/

It’s been possible for a while to control bionic limbs with your brain, but there’s been something missing: kinesthetic feedback, or the nervous system signals that give your limbs a sense of presence. You frequently have to stare at your artificial arm to ensure that you’re grabbing a cup instead of operating on instinct. That elusive quality may soon be a regular staple of prosthetics, however. Researchers have developed a neural interface that generate this feedback and make bionic feel like they’re part of your body.

The trick was to create a two-way interface that vibrating nerves at reinnervation sites (places where amputated nerves have been redirected to remaining muscles), convincing their brain that the limb is really there. Patients in tests could not only perform actions without looking at their prosthetic arms, they could often perform actions as elegantly as someone with natural limbs. And importantly, the prosthetics feel like their limbs, not just electronics strapped to their body.

This feedback isn’t very complex at the moment, and researchers intend to develop subtler signals that more closely replicate what you get from natural arms. However, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be effective — it just has to establish that instinctual link that would otherwise be lost. Amputees could spend less time training themselves to use prosthetics and more time actually using them.

High definition hearing: Deaf sufferers joy as scientists invent bionic ear https://briefnews.eu/high-definition-hearing-deaf-sufferers-joy-as-scientists-invent-bionic-ear-2/ https://briefnews.eu/high-definition-hearing-deaf-sufferers-joy-as-scientists-invent-bionic-ear-2/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 00:44:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/high-definition-hearing-deaf-sufferers-joy-as-scientists-invent-bionic-ear-2/

The research could transform the lives of thousands of people.

Hearing aids and implants are limited because users are often unable to pick out complex sound or hear clearly among background noise.

Researchers at The Bionics Institute in Melbourne are developing a way to adapt the cochlear implant in the ear to stimulate the auditory nerve using light instead of electrical impulses.

This means sounds can be specifically targeted along different frequency regions along the auditory nerve.

Dr Carly Anderson, of Action on Hearing Loss, said: “This is really exciting, and could go a long way to solving the current limitations with cochlear implants revolutionising how we can restore hearing to deaf people.

“This could enable people to communicate more effectively, which could greatly improve their quality of life.”

Researchers carrying out laboratory studies of the new device have secured the support of Action on Hearing Loss, which this month launches a fundraising campaign for its development.

Cochlear implants, developed 40 years ago, and used by 12,000 people in the UK, provide a sensation of hearing.

They consist of two main parts; a speech processor and a surgically implanted receiver and a set of electrodes.

The microphone picks up sound waves which it sends to the processor where the converted sounds are transmitted to the brain.

However, results vary dramatically depending on the health of the inner ear and the individual brain.

Researchers found a way to enable the nerve to become responsive to light instead of electrical signals using gene therapy.

Around 650 adults and 500 children receive a cochlear implant each year but it is estimated only about five per cent of those eligible for an implant actually receives one.

Experts believe this could be because people are not aware they could benefit. People need to be profoundly deaf and gaining little or no benefit from hearing aids.

There are more than 11 million people in the UK with some form of hearing loss. More than 900,000 people in the UK are severely or profoundly deaf.

Ed Rex, 32, from Wood Green, north London, of Action on Hearing Loss, has a progressive hearing loss condition which has affected him since he was a child.

He was fitted with a cochlear implant six years ago, which he said “completely changed my life”.

He struggles to hear people in bars with background noise but added: “The implant gave me confidence again. I heard a grasshopper chirping for the first time.

“The possibility of this new technology is fantastic. I would no longer feel the need to stress myself out when I go out.”

Richard Anderson Dead The Six Million Dollar ManOur sister site Deadline reports that Anderson passed away Thursday; no cause of death has been released. Anderson starred alongside Lee Majors as Steve Austin’s boss and handler Oscar Goldman on ABC’s Six Million Dollar Man, starting with the show’s second episode, and reprised the role on the 1976-78 spinoff The Bionic Woman, opposite Lindsay Wagner. He played Oscar Goldman again in a series of Six Million/Bionic Woman reunion movies, the last of which aired in 1994.

Before Six Million Dollar Man, Anderson played police lieutenant Steve Drumm in the final season of Perry Mason, alongside Raymond Burr. He also had roles on Gunsmoke, The Fugitive and Knight Rider, along with a nine-episode stint on Dynasty as Senator Buck Fallmont.

“Richard became a dear and loyal friend, and I have never met a man like him,” Majors said in a statement. “I called him ‘Old Money.’ His always stylish attire, his class, calmness and knowledge never faltered in his 91 years… He was still the sweet, charming man when I spoke to him a few weeks ago. ‘Luke Cage’ Season 2 Photo: First Look at Misty Knight’s Bionic Arm https://briefnews.eu/luke-cage-season-2-photo-first-look-at-misty-knights-bionic-arm/ https://briefnews.eu/luke-cage-season-2-photo-first-look-at-misty-knights-bionic-arm/#respond Wed, 30 Aug 2017 09:33:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/luke-cage-season-2-photo-first-look-at-misty-knights-bionic-arm/ Misty Knight bionic arm

NYPD cop Misty Knight (Simone Missick) is returning to Luke Cage with a new weapon. Following the events of Marvel and Netflix’s new show, The Defenders, Knight has undergone some changes. Like the character in the comic, she now has a bionic arm in the 13-episode second season of Luke Cage.

Naturally, there are spoilers for The Defenders ahead.

In the new Netflix series, Mercedes Kelly “Misty” Knight was leading an NYPD task force going after the major criminal group known as the Hand. As Misty attempts to help the Defenders, she loses her arm to the Hand’s leader, Bakuto (Ramón Rodríguez). When Bakuto is going to strike down Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick) with his sword, Misty steps in and loses her arm to save her. Then Colleen takes her to the hospital owned by Danny Rand (a.k.a. Iron Fist). In the comics, Misty and Colleen become best friends and even open a private detective agency, Knightwing Restorations Ltd. Maybe a future storyline?

The incident with Bakuto paves the way for Misty to get her famous bionic arm, which was created by Tony Stark and Stark Industries in the comics. In her comic book incarnation, she lost her limb while trying to stop a bomb. How the bionic arm is made in Netflix’s Marvel universe is unknown, but a new photo from Entertainment Weekly confirms Misty has her prosthetic arm in Luke Cage season 2:

The bionic arm gives Misty super strength. In the comics, it also gives her other abilities, like controlling robots, energy blasts, and gravity fields – which might look out of place in Luke Cage. As for whehter her new arm will do any of that good stuff in Luke Cage, we’ll just have to wait until next year when the new season arrives. Misty will also appear in the recently announced second season of Iron Fist, which was not received as warmly as some Marvel’s other shows.

In the comics, Misty has romantic relationships with Danny Rand. It seems like fans are more hopeful and excited about her future with Colleen Wing, though. The two characters teamed up for the miniseries “Daughters of the Dragon,” which features the two of them starting their investigation business. With Misty and Colleen bound to share more screen time together in Iron Fist, some fans are already hoping for a spin-off for the duo.

Luke Cage season 2 debuts on Netflix in 2018.

    Mind-controlled bionic hand can help stroke patients move again https://briefnews.eu/mind-controlled-bionic-hand-can-help-stroke-patients-move-again/ https://briefnews.eu/mind-controlled-bionic-hand-can-help-stroke-patients-move-again/#respond Sun, 28 May 2017 02:47:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mind-controlled-bionic-hand-can-help-stroke-patients-move-again/

A team of scientists from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have proven that the mind-controlled device they developed can help stroke survivors regain control of their hands. Stroke typically causes paralysis on one side of the body, leaving patients nearly or completely unable to move some of their limbs. They can regain some voluntary movements after years of therapy, but the team’s device called Ipsihand could help make their rehabilitation go faster. For their study, the researchers asked 13 people who had a stroke six months or more in the past to wear the bionic hand and a cap with electrodes on their head.

The cap picks up on the user’s intention to open or close the paralyzed hand, the computer it’s attached to amplifies those signals and the Ipsihand follows those commands. So, how does the technology work? It’s based on what David Bundy, the lead author of the team’s paper published in the journal Stroke, discovered a decade ago. See, the parts of the brain that control movements are located on the other side of the limbs you want to move. If, say, you want to close your left hand, it’s the right part of your brain that does the work. That also means that a stroke survivor who can’t control his left arm and leg sustained damage on the the right side of his brain.

Bundy and neurosurgery professor Eric Leuthardt, however, found out that the electric signals that indicate movement first appear on the side of the limb you want to move. Those signals are responsible for activating the other side of your brain, which causes the actual movement. In stroke patients, the initial signals get lost in the ether, since the part it’s trying to activate doesn’t work anymore. That’s where Ipsihand comes in.

Out of 13 subjects, 10 were able to finish 12 weeks of testing, picking up blocks and building towers, fitting tubes around smaller tubes and moving their hands to their mouths. Their scores improved by an average of 6.2 points on a 57-point scale. It doesn’t sound like much, but as Leuthardt said, it could be “the difference between being unable to put on their pants by themselves and being able to do so.”

During those tests, the team found that patients improved based on how well the system read the signals from their brains. The more the researchers improve its capability to pick up signals, the better Ipsihand will be at helping survivors move their hands again.

Man with bionic penis describes losing virginity to a woman he met on FACEBOOK https://briefnews.eu/man-with-bionic-penis-describes-losing-virginity-to-a-woman-he-met-on-facebook/ https://briefnews.eu/man-with-bionic-penis-describes-losing-virginity-to-a-woman-he-met-on-facebook/#respond Fri, 12 May 2017 12:33:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-with-bionic-penis-describes-losing-virginity-to-a-woman-he-met-on-facebook/

Transgender Lee Carter finally had sex with a woman – as a man – for the first time in a hotel last month, and has now spoken out about his experience.

The 49-year-old spent 40 years trapped in the wrong body and said sex with his £60,000 male body was “incredible”.

His penis was built using skin from his arm and features a pump inside a silicone testicle to make him erect.

He said: “I waited a long time, but it was worth it. It was incredible and we both enjoyed it so much we didn’t stop all night. And then we started again in the morning.”

Lee had previously claimed that having lived as a woman called Lisa for most of his life it would make him a good lover, and his partner Leanne agrees.

The couple met after separated mum of two Leanne, 36, contacted Lee, having read about him in the press.

She contacted him via Facebook to say she had read his story and purchased his book called Living With Lisa which details his transition from female to male and the pair began chatting.

After a few days they spoke on the phone and sparks flew.

Lee said: “We both felt a strong connection to each other. I knew she was the one and she felt the same.”

After admitting they had feelings for each other they spoke daily until Lee surprised Leanne by driving 200 miles form his home in Clacton and booking into a hotel local to her.

Lee had previously turned down offers of sex because he wanted to meet the right woman to lose his male virginity too. He knew Leanne was that woman.

He said: “It just felt right. I had to see her. When I called her I told her where I was and she came straight over.”

The pair met in the bar and went for a meal and drinks before going upstairs to Lee’s hotel room.

His bionic penis which was fitted in 2012 completing his gender surgery, is operated via a pump in a silicon testicle.

Lee said: “I was nervous but a few beers definitely helped. I knew everything worked but it was just because it was the first time with a woman.

“I couldn’t believe it was finally happening and I was losing my virginity as a man, but more importantly with someone whom I cared deeply about and who felt the same about me.”

The happy couple emerged the following morning more committed than ever to their blossoming relationship.

It took Lee three years to transition and five operations. He started hormone treatment in May 2009 after deciding he could not continue to live in the wrong body.

In June 2010 his breath were removed. And in November that year the had the phalloplasty to create the penis.

In October 2011 silicone implants created testicles and in April 2012 the pump was fitted to enable erections.

Childcare worker Leanne says they are talking about moving in together.

She said: “Lee is a lovely guy and I am lucky to have met him. It wasn’t awkward or uncomfortable because I already knew what he had been through from reading his book.

“He’s just a normal guy who also happens to be thoughtful, romantic, sensitive and kind, what’s not to love.”
