Medics may slow biological time to save soldiers’ lives https://briefnews.eu/medics-may-slow-biological-time-to-save-soldiers-lives/ https://briefnews.eu/medics-may-slow-biological-time-to-save-soldiers-lives/#respond Sun, 04 Mar 2018 22:55:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/medics-may-slow-biological-time-to-save-soldiers-lives/

Battlefield medics frequently only have a brief window of opportunity to treat an injury before it’s fatal or causes permanent disabilities, and it’s frequently so fleeting that there’s not much they can do. DARPA is exploring an unusual solution to that problem: slow the biological processes to give medics more room to breathe. Its new Biostasis research program aims to bring cell activity to a near halt by using biochemicals that control energetics at the protein level. If animals like tardigrades and wood frogs can stabilize their cells to survive freezing and dehydration, similar techniques might offer more time to medics who want to treat wounds before a victim’s vital systems break down.

DARPA knows this won’t be easy. The trick is to slow down every cellular process at roughly the same rate — you can’t just pause a few while others run at full speed. You’d also have to minimize any damage when the cells return to their normal function.

The Biostasis program is still very young (its first day for answering proposers’ questions is March 20th), and DARPA isn’t expecting too much even from complete projects: it’s initially focusing on “benchtop” proofs of concept and will focus on real-world uses as the program nears its 5-year end. If it has any success, though, the program could prove to be a breakthrough for the medical field as a whole, not just in combat. Paramedics could buy themselves enough time to get a patient to hospital, and doctors could focus less on basic survival and more on full recoveries.

Sperm donors promised anonymity decades ago are being tracked down and contacted by their children. DNA tests and the internet have all but put an end to anonymity for sperm donors and secrecy for parents.

Report that North Korean defector has anthrax antibodies feeds into biological weapons scare https://briefnews.eu/report-that-north-korean-defector-has-anthrax-antibodies-feeds-into-biological-weapons-scare/ https://briefnews.eu/report-that-north-korean-defector-has-anthrax-antibodies-feeds-into-biological-weapons-scare/#respond Wed, 27 Dec 2017 06:47:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/report-that-north-korean-defector-has-anthrax-antibodies-feeds-into-biological-weapons-scare/ South Korean media have claimed that a North Korean defector was found to have developed antibodies to anthrax before his flight across the border. The report may likely play into the hands of those looking for a pretext for war.

The news was broken by South Korea’s Channel A on Tuesday, citing an anonymous intelligence official.

“Anthrax antibodies have been found in the North Korean soldier who defected this year,” the unnamed official said, without revealing the way in which the soldier might have been exposed to the deadly substance, which could be either direct contact or vaccination.

Little is known about the soldier apart from that he was one of four North Korean military servicemen to defect to South Korea this year. The revelation comes against the backdrop of a series of reports suggesting that North Korea has been developing a program to fit biological weapons on intercontinental missiles. An earlier anonymous report by Japan’s Asahi newspaper, that came out last week, claimed that Pyongyang has embarked on “conducting heat and pressure resistance tests to see whether anthrax germs can survive at temperatures of 7,000 degrees, the level an ICBM [inter-continental ballistic missile] encounters when it reenters the Earth atmosphere.”

The concerns of the pariah state getting hold of biological weapons were echoed in the recently released US National Security Strategy, claiming that Pyongyang has been striving to obtain “chemical and biological weapons which could also be delivered by missile.”

North Korea, meanwhile, rejected all the allegations and reiterated its commitment to the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC). It accused Washington of trying to forge a pretext for a military incursion, like it did in 2003 to justify its military aggression in Iraq.

The comparison has merit, as even the alleged biological weapon is exactly the same. At the fateful UN Security Council meeting on February 5, 2003, the then-US Secretary of State Colin Powell brandished a model vial of anthrax to illustrate the alleged danger coming from Iraq under Saddam Hussein, which according to Powell could have produced some 25,000 liters of anthrax. The word “anthrax” first made headlines in October 2001, when five Americans died and over a dozen fell sick due to exposure to powdered anthrax sent through the mail. In the most prominent case, a letter with anthrax was delivered to the office of Democratic Senate majority leader Tom Daschle, shutting down the whole Senate.

The letters that also contained death threats were linked by the media and the George W. Bush administration to Iraq at the time.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un provides guidance on a nuclear weapons program in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang September 3, 2017.

“The Iraqi regime has plotted to develop anthrax and nerve gas weapons for over a decade,” Bush said in his State of the Union address in January 2002, noting that the US would act first in the face of a possibility of such an attack.

Later, it was revealed that the man behind the toxic letters was US citizen Bruce Ivins, who was working in a military biodefense lab and had no relation to Iraq. The rest of Powell’s claims about Iraq’s supposed weapons of mass destruction found no proof either, with Powell later admitting that he was misled by intelligence community and the speech became a “blot” on his record.

While the US officials, spearheaded by UN envoy Nikki Haley, are upping the rhetoric and threatening to “utterly destroy” North Korea if war breaks out, or in case of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, calling on Pentagon to move US servicemen’s families from South Korea as though the war is imminent, Russia and China have been advocating restraint, warning of disastrous consequences to the whole region, first and foremost to Washington’s ally South Korea, of a potential military confrontation. The so-called double-freeze plan, championed by Moscow and Beijing, envisions the simultaneous halt of war games regularly held by the US and allies and the suspension of the nuclear and missile program run by Pyongyang. The plan, however, was outright rejected by Washington in August.

AI could help eradicate biological disease https://briefnews.eu/ai-could-help-eradicate-biological-disease/ https://briefnews.eu/ai-could-help-eradicate-biological-disease/#respond Sat, 02 Dec 2017 13:02:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ai-could-help-eradicate-biological-disease/

What does it mean to be human? The answer to this is, like humanity, in constant flux, evolving with our species and the times. But one essential, defining element for centuries is our mortality. All people get sick, and all people die. But advanced technologies like AI could help change all of that — if the expert minds behind them succeed, that is.

We’ve come a long way in reducing and even eliminating biological diseases in the past century, passing milestones like the emergence of penicillin, the ability to sequence the genomes of diseases, and lately, the discovery of CRISPR. Now, with the advent of computers in medicine, humanity is about to supercharge its medical progress — and perhaps finally put an end to death by disease.

Illness still exists, but improvement is rapid

Even in the digital age, illness is still the main cause of death across the country and the world. Heart disease leads the charge, followed closely by cancer.

Believe it or not, this is a sign of progress. In contrast, Americans in 1900 were dying of what are now curable diseases today, such as respiratory illnesses (tuberculosis, pneumonia, and influenza), as well as gastrointestinal infections (such as cholera and dysentery). Put simply, today’s diseases of civilization are no longer the germ-fueled pandemics like Spanish flu or bubonic plague. Instead, they’re diseases stemming from sedentary lifestyles and modern habits.

Although humans tend to think linearly, with cooperative measures and leaps in technology, technological advances tend to be exponential. With increased economic prosperity worldwide, this model is spreading to other nations. Heart attacks and strokes edge out previous, communicable diseases like lower respiratory infections and diarrhea. Clearly, as a country becomes richer (and their infrastructure strengthens), the threat shifts. Even if their populations are free from afflictions born of unsanitary conditions, they will still encounter the downsides of more affluent societies.

But all this begs an interesting question: Can we ever truly rid ourselves of disease? Or have we only traded one cause of death for another?

Computer-driven medicine

This brings us to the next milestone: computers. Though they’ve long been used in medicine (in the 1960s, early computers were used to track blood-borne diseases), new developments may revolutionize the field. The most promising development is machine learning, which promises to help end disease as we know it.

At the moment, we’ve only scratched the surface of machine learning’s medical potential. Today, machine learning programs supplement doctors. The software sifts through and interprets reams of data, diagnoses current patient problems, creates patient profiles from their medical histories, and predicts future conditions seamlessly. Given how much data the sheer volume of medical studies produce (in 2003, one health care network estimated that it would take 30 years for humans to review every single existing randomized trial), the fact that computers can cut down, analyze, and aggregate patient data is very promising.

Deep learning

Machine learning capabilities are only growing. Researchers are conducting promising experiments on a variant called deep learning, programs patterned after the very structure of the brain. Deep learning programs consist of layers of algorithms stacked atop each other. An input from one layer is then transmitted into the next, with each subsequent layer further processing the inputs. With this complex system, deep learning can easily recognize patterns and indulge in extremely high-level procedures — higher than what we’ve seen thus far from normal machine learning programs.

With this raw processing power, the days of disease may yet be numbered. Nvidia, a company best known for producing graphics processing units, is an unlikely candidate for a deep learning leader. Yet as developers make clear, the nature of GPUs make them ideal for deep learning. Compared to normal CPUs with eight cores (computer chips), GPUs have thousands of cores, making it easier to run complex programs. Because of this unexpected crossover, Nvidia now applies its deep learning expertise to medicine. Among these exciting applications include identifying genetic factors involved in neuro disorders or using algorithms to predict patient health outcomes (and constantly learning from its mistakes and successes along the way).

For therein lies the biggest advantage of deep learning in medicine: its adaptive, autonomous quality. Deep learning algorithms can actually build on their knowledge and evolve, like humans do. In fact, studies suggest that in many applications, deep learning can surpass human abilities. In medical imaging, deep learning offers the ability to automate a task that was once limited to human specialists — and do it with a far lower rate of error. In fact, some deep learning teams have already used their programs to classify skin cancer cells simply from a patient photo, demonstrating the awesome ability of such algorithms.

The natural cumulation of this technology is cutting-edge, forward-thinking institutions that seek to overturn our paradigm of disease. For example, the Microsoft biological computation lab hosts a variety of exciting procedures. The most dramatic procedure may well be the ability to model biological systems and predict outcomes. At the intersection of machine learning, mathematics, and biology, Microsoft’s lab hopes to someday both understand and control the way cells behave in order to reverse disease through programming.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. At the new USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, AI experts like Fei Sha apply machine learning to health and bioscience to identify the genetic cause of diseases like cancer and develop hyper-effective precision therapies to cure them.

The future is now

It’s an exciting time when computer science, at one point little more than a series of ones and zeroes, is on the verge of revolutionizing health and wellness in ways no one could have predicted. Technology has changed what it means to be human, and with the advent of intelligent machines, the line between body and computer is finer than ever. The implications are extraordinary.

Imagine the day when each of us has an SD card or equivalent with our genetic code, so doctors can print out an organ or replacement appendage based on our unique information. Imagine, too, the reams of research AI computers could conduct by gathering data and learning at an exponential pace. While it’s true that AI can be dangerous, as Stephen Hawking warns, these are just several of the incredible opportunities within reach before we even come close to the danger zone.

There will no doubt be roadblocks between today and a disease-free utopia, if indeed it is achievable. Also, this could lead to consequences such as overpopulation, inequality, and an abundance of ethical quandaries. But I do believe that if nothing else, computer science is redefining humanity and will continue to do so as AI penetrates mainstream medicine. In this light, what it really means to be human may be determined less by our mortality than by our amazing ability to overcome it.

Researchers want astronauts to put their biological waste to work https://briefnews.eu/researchers-want-astronauts-to-put-their-biological-waste-to-work/ https://briefnews.eu/researchers-want-astronauts-to-put-their-biological-waste-to-work/#respond Tue, 22 Aug 2017 14:46:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/researchers-want-astronauts-to-put-their-biological-waste-to-work/

Researchers at Clemson University are presenting work at the National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society that could change how astronauts handle waste in the future. For long trips — to Mars, for instance — astronauts will need to maximize the utility of everything they bring on board. Extra weight means more fuel is required, so keeping stocks low while being able to recycle waste into something useful is going to be necessary for these sorts of trips. “If astronauts are going to make journeys that span several years, we’ll need to find a way to reuse and recycle everything they bring with them,” Mark Blenner, one of the researchers on the project told Phys.org. “Atom economy will become really important.”

Blenner’s work focuses on taking biological waste like urine and even exhaled air and putting it to good use. The research team is using the waste to fuel a certain type of yeast — Y. lipolytica — that requires nitrogen and carbon to grow. And those yeast strains can produce useful chemicals like omega-3 fatty acids and monomers that can be linked to create polymers. Those polymers could in theory then be 3D printed into plastic parts. Overall, the work shows that human waste can be used to create necessary products for spaceflight while minimizing what’s stored on board. “Having a biological system that astronauts can awaken from a dormant state to start producing what they need, when they need it, is the motivation for our project,” said Blenner.

Right now, the yeast can only generate small amounts of product, but the team is working to increase their output. And they’re exploring how this method can be used on Earth as well. “We’re learning that Y. lipolytica is quite a bit different than other yeast in their genetics and biochemical nature,” Blenner said. “Every new organism has some amount of quirkiness that you have to focus on and understand better.”

Coronation Street's Michelle Holmes joins Hollyoaks as Scott searches for biological mum https://briefnews.eu/coronation-streets-michelle-holmes-joins-hollyoaks-as-scott-searches-for-biological-mum/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-streets-michelle-holmes-joins-hollyoaks-as-scott-searches-for-biological-mum/#respond Sun, 02 Apr 2017 14:30:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-streets-michelle-holmes-joins-hollyoaks-as-scott-searches-for-biological-mum/

Michelle is famous for her roles in BBC‘s Goodnight Sweetheart and 1987’s Rita, Sue and Bob Too, and previously played Rovers Return barmaid Tina Fowler in Coronation Street back in the early ’90s.

Now she is set to join Hollyoaks as Greta, a woman involved in Scott’s (played by Ross Adams) mission to piece together his family history after he found out he was adopted in a shock twist.

Joining the show next week, Greta will be tracked down by Scott when he discovers an old address for his birth mother and shows up at her door.

Channel 4 bosses are keeping tight-lipped about whether Greta will help Scott find his family or whether the information she gives him will leave him feeling even more lost than before.

Speaking about her part on the show, Michelle said: “It’s a pleasure to be working on Hollyoaks and with the hugely talented Ross Adams.

“We’re having such a great time and lots of laughs in the quest to find Scott’s mum.”

Michelle is no stranger to soaps, as she also appeared in several episodes of ITV‘s Emmerdale nearly 20 years ago.

She’s entering Hollyoaks at a very dramatic time, as the village is in chaos after the murder of Amy Barnes (Ashley Slanina-Davies) last week.

Although Amy’s ex Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) has since confessed to the crime, questions are being asked as to whether he is the real killer.

Hollyoaks continues tomorrow at 6.30pm on Channel 4.

Michelle Holmes’ first scenes will air 7pm Tuesday April 11 on E4 and 6.30pm Wednesday 12 on Channel 4.

Lisa Vanderpump Reveals Her True Feelings About Her Son’s Quest To Find His Biological Parents https://briefnews.eu/lisa-vanderpump-reveals-her-true-feelings-about-her-sons-quest-to-find-his-biological-parents/ https://briefnews.eu/lisa-vanderpump-reveals-her-true-feelings-about-her-sons-quest-to-find-his-biological-parents/#respond Sun, 22 Jan 2017 10:58:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lisa-vanderpump-reveals-her-true-feelings-about-her-sons-quest-to-find-his-biological-parents/ Lisa Vanderpump's son Max is searching for his birth parents

Lisa Vanderpump has always known her adopted son, Max, would possibly someday want to find his biological parents, and on the most recent episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Vanderpump helped her son get the ball rolling. Vanderpump and her husband, Ken Todd, helped Max, now 25, track down the lawyer behind the adoption, but when they turned up a bio of Max’s biological father, Lisa became very emotional and had to leave the room.

On her Bravo blog, Lisa Vanderpump revealed that she fully supports her son’s quest to find out more about his bloodline, admitting that when he was younger she felt much more insecure about the idea.

“As an adoptive mother in his younger years, I felt threatened at the prospect of him searching for his biological family, wondering if a bloodline might usurp his feelings of the familial bond that we had created,” Lisa wrote.

“But now as he is older, I feel more secure and support his curiosity,” Vanderpump continued.

“Unfortunately, my emotions got the better of me. Just the paperwork and memories so deeply etched in my mind of all those years ago sent a ripple of fear and apprehension through me. We tracked down the lawyer, and they brought up the paperwork, and as I read the profile of the man that had fathered Max … I had to leave and regroup.”

Lisa Vanderpump admits that she usually remains “stoic,” even when under attack by her co-stars on RHOBH. But the reality star added that when it comes to matters concerning her children, tears can sometimes be “a blink away.”

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fans know a little bit of the back-story regarding Lisa Vanderpump’s adoption. Lisa previously revealed that she and her husband adopted Max from foster care in 1992 when he was just six weeks old. Vanderpump said she always had to be ready in case Max’s birth parents came calling, but she was caught off guard a few years ago when he began asking questions about his heritage and told her he wanted to find out more about his background. On an earlier RHOBH episode, Lisa and her husband considered a type of genetic testing that compares mouth swab DNA to others in a database.

Lisa Vanderpump opened up about her son’s adoption on her Bravo blog in 2015. Vanderpump revealed that she had always planned to adopt, even after the birth of her daughter, Pandora, and that she first visited baby Max in a foster care home. Lisa added that her then-6-year-old daughter was instantly smitten with her baby brother.

A photo posted by Lisa Vanderpump (@lisavanderpump) on

“I think the perfect example of how relevant his adoption was happened one night when we came home from dinner, and a couple who had worked for us at the house for quite a few years by then said Max was acting up, being silly, and telling them how he was adopted, which they believed to be untrue,” Lisa wrote.

“They would’ve never known, they said, he was the image of his father. My point being, it was never mentioned, it was never important. If he had questions, I answered them as simply as I could, so it was rather surprising when Max came to me and inquired about his genetic heritage.”

Lisa Vanderpump has said that she always loved both of her children equally and that they had an idyllic childhood “full of ponies and dogs” and “extraordinary experiences.” But Lisa also admitted that her daughter was sometimes jealous of her little brother because she sometimes felt he was favored.

On RHOBH, Vanderpump revealed that while she was able to have more biological children she and her husband tried to adopt four more children while they were living in England, but they were turned down because they were too old. Lisa was 35 years old at the time.

Now, as her son tries to track down information about his lineage, Lisa says she knows for sure that “biology has little to do with emotional connections, of that Max and I are sure.”
