Mobike’s dockless bike-sharing service comes to Washington, DC https://briefnews.eu/mobikes-dockless-bike-sharing-service-comes-to-washington-dc/ https://briefnews.eu/mobikes-dockless-bike-sharing-service-comes-to-washington-dc/#respond Thu, 21 Sep 2017 07:00:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mobikes-dockless-bike-sharing-service-comes-to-washington-dc/

Washington DC is one of the most bike-happy cities in America, with around five percent of commuters pedaling around the city each day. That’s one of the reasons why Mobike, a company that has mostly been in China and Europe until now, is launching a pilot for the first dockless bike-sharing program in the capital. It’s starting with 180 bikes in the pilot program for now, a pittance next to the millions it has in China, but plans to expand the program across the US if things go well.

Unlike New York’s Citi Bike, Vélib’ in Paris and Washington DC’s current Capital Bikeshare program, there’s no need to hunt for a bike dock on departure and arrival. Instead, you use the Mobike app to find the nearest bike and scan the QR code to unlock it. Once you arrive at your destination, you can park it at “any authorized bike parking area” near your destination and lock it manually.

The bikes themselves use non-puncture airless tires, a chainless shaft drive and disk brakes, to ensure fewer breakdowns and a longer life. Their distinctive bright orange and gray paint scheme makes them easy to spot.

Decentralized bike sharing schemes have caught on in China, to the point that it’s comically difficult to find a parking spot in some areas. Mobike is one of the leaders in Asia, and has already launched programs in Manchester, London and other UK cities. It has been careful to gain local government approval to avoid enforcement problems encountered by Singapore-based oBike and other rival firms in London. Mobike has five million bikes in Europe and Asia, with most in China, but Washington DC is its first US city.

Funnily enough, San Francisco-based Spin, another dockless bike-sharing service, also plans to launch in Washington DC this week, the Washington Post notes. That company already offers its services in Austin, Seattle, South San Francisco and the Rockaways in Queens, NY.

As noted, DC already has the Capital Bikeshare program, but city officials are welcoming the newcomers as a way to augment, rather than compete with it. For one, they’ll operate in neighborhoods where the current service doesn’t. They’ll also bolster rush hour demand when Capital Bikeshare typically gets slammed, leaving many commuters stranded.

To ensure users can find bikes and don’t park where they shouldn’t, Mobike will mobilize a DC team to track and move them around or re-park them neatly if need be. As for the price, both Mobike and Spin are charging $ 1 for a half-hour ride — exactly half that of Capital Bikeshare.

China’s Mobike lands in its first U.S. city as bike-sharing battle heats up https://briefnews.eu/chinas-mobike-lands-in-its-first-u-s-city-as-bike-sharing-battle-heats-up/ https://briefnews.eu/chinas-mobike-lands-in-its-first-u-s-city-as-bike-sharing-battle-heats-up/#respond Wed, 20 Sep 2017 10:20:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chinas-mobike-lands-in-its-first-u-s-city-as-bike-sharing-battle-heats-up/

Chinese bike-sharing startup Mobike has arrived in Washington D.C., its first U.S. city. The launch comes as myriad bike-sharing companies launch similar services across the country.

To recap, Mobike provides cities with the bikes and the technology platform, including mobile apps, allowing riders to unlock a bike by scanning a QR code with their phone. For longevity, the Mobike bikes are chainless, have puncture-proof airless tyres, and are supported by an anti-rust aluminium frame.

Importantly, the bikes are “dockless” meaning they don’t rely on docking stations — users can padlock the bicycles anywhere once they’re finished. It’s easy to find them again due to their built-in GPS functionality.

Launched in Shanghai back in 2016, Mobike started out in dozens of cities across China before landing in Singapore in March, followed by the U.K., Japan, and a number of other markets. Mobike is now available in 180 cities, though well over half of those are in China.

Its arrival in the U.S. is notable, as it comes just a month after Chinese rival Ofo launched in its first U.S. city, Seattle, while U.S.-based competitor LimeBike just this week announced it was rolling out in a handful of cities across the U.S.

Show me the money

Mobike announced a whopping $ 600 million funding round back in June, with big-name backers including Tencent, Sequoia, TPG, and Hillhouse Capital, among others. This took Mobike’s total funding to date to more than $ 900 million. Likewise, Ofo recently raised $ 700 million from Alibaba and Didi Chuxing (the Uber of China), among others, taking its total funding past the $ 1.2 billion mark.

San Mateo-based LimeBike has raised a more modest $ 12 million in funding, though its focus on the U.S. market could stand it in good stead domestically as Mobike and Ofo battle it out for mindshare in hundreds of cities around the world.

Mobike will kick off its U.S. foray by placing bikes “in key downtown locations” in Washington D.C., and the company said it made some tweaks to the bikes specifically for the local market. These include a new design and, crucially, adding three gears to the mix — Mobikes are normally gearless.

It’s clear that a bike-sharing battle is being waged in the U.S. and first mover advantage is key in terms of establishing mindshare. But when multiple companies are making their “first moves” around the same time, things start to get interesting. One outcome could be that certain bike-sharing brands manage to corner specific cities where they happen to launch first, but what is more likely to happen is a number of fierce battles and one-upmanship initiatives when the companies’ respective launch plans begin to overlap significantly.

LimeBike has already said it plans to be available in up to 40 U.S. markets by the end of the year, and Ofo and Mobike won’t be content with just one or two cities either.

“We are working with a number of cities across the country and are confident this successful pilot will be the first of many partnerships, allowing us to make cycling the most convenient and affordable choice for transportation all around America,” noted Mobike U.S. manager Rachel Song.

London is now awash with bike-sharing schemes https://briefnews.eu/london-is-now-awash-with-bike-sharing-schemes/ https://briefnews.eu/london-is-now-awash-with-bike-sharing-schemes/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2017 13:00:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/london-is-now-awash-with-bike-sharing-schemes/

How many bike-sharing schemes does London need exactly? Well, at least five if you ask the companies behind such services. Today, Ofo comes to the capital, following a limited trial in Cambridge that began earlier this year and a launch in Oxford last month. Initially, the Chinese firm has dotted 200 bikes around the London Borough of Hackney. Yesterday, European outfit Urbo announced it was also arriving in London this month, putting 250 bikes on the streets of the Borough of Waltham Forest.

Alongside London’s ‘Boris bikes,’ of which there are over 11,000, we now have four nigh-identical dockless bike rental services vying for custom in the capital. oBike was first, arriving in July, followed by Mobike, Ofo and Urbo this month. Unlike Boris bikes, the schemes don’t require riders to end their journeys at designated docking points. Finding, unlocking and paying for bikes is all handled via mobile apps, and there’s basically nothing that differentiates one service from another.

Choice is a good thing for consumers, of course, but all these new London players plan to put more and more bikes on the capital’s pavements as appetite for rentals you can park up almost anywhere grows. That is, if you can find a spot to legally lock the thing up. Dockless bike-sharing schemes have caused problems in Chinese cities saturated by thousands upon thousands of the things, leading to mounds of wheels and frames forming at popular hop-off points.

Urbo

Though the companies in question are operating on a much smaller scale in London right now, similar issues are starting to appear already. Wandsworth Council reported last month that it had impounded 130 oBikes for blocking pavements. Ofo had to seriously reduce the scope of its Cambridge pilot before even launching, too, after local authorities expressed concerns over the potential for pavement clutter.

As the Evening Standard reports, Hackney Council transport bod Feryal Demirci said of Ofo’s launch: “We are going to work with Ofo to make sure that users are given information on locations where they can park their bike in hot spot areas to prevent issues such as obstructing the footway and parking on busy, narrow pavements.”

Ofo, oBike, Mobike and Urbo all say they are in dialogue with councils, but even formal approval doesn’t mean much when the bikes can end up in any London borough. If any more dockless bike-sharing schemes launch in the capital, we might hit saturation point pretty quickly. It seems inevitable, then, that Transport for London (TfL) will probably start regulating these services before too long, just as it now does with Uber.

America’s newest bikesharing program lets you drop off bikes basically anywhere https://briefnews.eu/americas-newest-bikesharing-program-lets-you-drop-off-bikes-basically-anywhere/ https://briefnews.eu/americas-newest-bikesharing-program-lets-you-drop-off-bikes-basically-anywhere/#respond Sat, 25 Mar 2017 02:11:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/americas-newest-bikesharing-program-lets-you-drop-off-bikes-basically-anywhere/ spin photoSpin

Earlier this month, Bay-Area-based startup Spin introduced the first large-scale deployment of a stationless bikesharing program in the US.

As of March 11, Austin, Texas now has hundreds of orange Spin bikes randomly scattered around the downtown area, each available for rent whenever and wherever Austinites need them.

Each bike pairs with a mobile app that electronically unlocks the bike for $ 1 per 30-minute trip.

Derrick Ko, a Spin co-founder, used to work for the ridesharing company Lyft, where he says he learned just how many people struggle with what’s known as a “last-mile transportation problem.”

Basically, people may find it easy to commute most of the way to work, but get snagged primarily within the last mile. In cities, Ko says, there are typically few options for people to travel that mile, short of walking or waiting in traffic.

If they had bikes right at their fingertips, Spin’s mission suggests, life would be a little easier.

“What we’re seeing is cities are getting extremely congested,” Ko says. “And public transportation infrastructure is very inconsistent around the US, to put it mildly. As a result, people are depending on cars.”

Spin’s solution is to give people the ability to rent a bike where they currently are, not where the bikes live in a designated rack — the way traditional bikeshare programs work. Just like Zipcar does for people who need a car, Spin’s app connects users to nearby bikes to rent them out for as long as they need.

Once they’re finished — say, arriving at a friend’s apartment — they can leave the bike up against a wall or beside a lamp post. There are no guarantees it’ll be there when they leave, but another will likely be just as close by. (If someone wanted to take the bike outside city limits, technically they have that option, Ko says. But he says that is an outlier case.)

In the short term, the goal is to mobilize people without adding to the congestion that’s already created by cars. In the longer term, Spin wants to transform how the US thinks about commuting — to take people from a car-centric mindset to one that prioritizes riding a cleaner and cheaper form of transit.

“It’s really about converting car trips to bike trips,” Ko says. “Every additional bike trip in place of a car trip will improve congestion; it’ll improve health; and it’ll improve pollution. And that to us is a great mark of our system working.”

Changing Americans’ preference for cars over bikes is kind of like asking them to prioritize Major League Soccer over the NFL, Ko admits. It’s a real challenge.

“This is a completely new model,” he says.

And launching a new model requires a number of precautions. Spin, for example, will be working with the Austin city government to educate citizens about the program, including telling people not to leave bikes in front of doorways or in places blocking pedestrian walkways.

There also is an on-the-ground task force that Spin has hired to enforce some of the policies. If people steal the bikes or misuse them, Spin will assemble a team that can investigate the problem. Ko says reports about China’s stationless bikesharing program going totally awry are mostly sensational; save for a few bad apples, he doesn’t expect the heaps of discarded bikes China has seen in a few rare cases.

If Austin proves successful, the company will look to expand to the Bay Area and other cities around the US.

“There’s this sentiment that people don’t like to own things, and bikes are definitely one of them,” Ko says. “And thanks to ridesharing, people are very used to their mobile phone as their gateway to transportation.”

Chinese bike-sharing startup ofo said it has raised $ 450 million in a fresh round of funding, as the firm faces up against deep-pocketed rival Mobike in one of the hottest sectors to attract tech investors.

Investment group DST Global, ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing and CITIC’s private equity arm were among investors, the company said in a statement.

Ofo and Mobike are two of a growing number of bike-sharing services in China that allow users to find, unlock and pay to rent the bicycles through a smartphone app, targeting younger consumers tired of congested roads and public transport.

Strong growth in the sector saw Mobike close a $ 215 million funding round last month, led by Tencent Holdings and Warburg Pincus LLC.

Ofo has previously raised funds from investors including Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi and Didi.

Since mid-2015 ofo has accumulated over 20 million registered users.
