Anyone who watched the preview for this Sunday’s Outlander (Starz, 8/7c) knows that, like the bad penny he is, Stephen Bonnet is poised to return.
The Irishman is a scheming, unrepentant scoundrel who has stolen, raped and murdered — and that’s just taking into account what’s happened since Jamie and Claire made his acquaintance in this season’s premiere. But is he a worse villain than Black Jack Randall, a misogynistic sadist who derived both physical and emotional pleasure from breaking Jamie’s body and spirit in Seasons 1 and 2?
We posed that question to Outlander executive producer Matthew B. Roberts… who told us we were barking up the wrong bad-apple tree.
“I don’t think they compare,” he said. “Black Jack, in his own heart, always had a good reason for doing whatever he was doing.”
Take Jamie’s brutal violation at Wentworth Prison at the end of Season 1, an attack that left the Scot suicidal in its wake. “To Jamie, it was a rape. But to Black Jack, he made [Jamie] agree to it. So in Black Jack’s mind, it was consensual,” Roberts observes, noting that the Brit’s take on the situation is a highly messed-up mindset to have. However, “That’s not Bonnet… The core difference is Black Jack showed genuine emotions, because he wasn’t a psychopath.”
The cagey Irishman, whom Roberts deems a bona fide psychopath, uses mimicry of emotion — rather than genuine feeling itself — in order to manipulate people and situations to his benefit. “That’s what makes him more dangerous than Black Jack, that this guy is a chameleon,” the EP adds. “You know what you get with Black Jack, but you don’t know what you get with Bonnet, and that’s what makes him more of a frightening character.”
Bottom line? Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ, they’re both demon spawn — just in different ways.

The arm of the US military that controls the launch of nuclear weapons tweeted that it was ready to drop something “much, much bigger” than New York’s New Year’s Eve ball.
Alongside the message, which has since been deleted from the social media site, the US Strategic Command unit shared footage of an aircraft releasing bombs.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

2 More flexibility … Field full side every round
We’ve addressed feedback about difficulty fielding a full XI every round. SuperCoaches now have more flexibility between positions, with the allrounder position removed. Allrounders are now dual position players, selectable as batsmen or bowlers. Wicketkeepers are also dual position players, selectable as batsmen or wicketkeepers. These changes allow SuperCoaches to react instantly to any change and field a full side every round.
3 Bigger squads
Further to our previous point, SuperCoach squad sizes have increased from 15 to 16 to create added team flexibility and emergency cover. There’s no excuse for not fielding a full side.
4 More action, more excitement
As the Big Bash gets bashier, so does SuperCoach BBL. The game has been boosted to 15 rounds to account for additional matches, up from 10 rounds.

A Republican senator who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee bought thousands of dollars-worth of stock in arms manufacturer Raytheon after pushing the Trump administration to approve massive hikes in defense spending.
Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma purchased between $ 50,000 and $ 100,000 of Raytheon stock last Tuesday – just days after news broke that US President Donald Trump had decided to back plans to request $ 750 billion from Congress for defense spending for the fiscal year 2020.
1. Sen. Inhofe pushed for record defense spending
2. Inhofe bought tens of thousands of stock in a defense contractor
3. Inhofe’s office was asked about the purchase
4. Inhofe dumped the stockhttps://t.co/DuZG6S9t9J— Citizens for Ethics (@CREWcrew) December 13, 2018
It seems that Inhofe was personally involved in the decision to hike the defense budget, too. When Trump suggested last week that he wanted to downsize parts of the US defense budget, Inhofe met with him and Defense Secretary James Mattis – a meeting which seems to have successfully convinced Trump to back increases in defense spending rather than cutbacks.
Inhofe’s communications director, Leacy Burke, told the Daily Beast, which first reported on the senator’s stock buy, that his financial transactions are “handled by a third-party advisor” and that he was not aware of the stock transaction. Burke said Inhofe had told his financial advisor to reverse the transaction when he learned of it. “This means that the transaction was canceled before it was settled; the Senator never took ownership of it,” she said.
The staffer also said Inhofe had written to his financial adviser instructing him not to buy anymore aerospace or defense stocks in future, given his position as the new chairman of the Armed Services Committee – but metadata on the letter provided by Burke showed that the letter was created less than 20 minutes after the Daily Beast contacted Inhofe’s office for comment on the stock purchase.
It appears that this was not the first time Inhofe owned stock in companies “within his direct legislative purview” either, the website reported. When he chaired the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee between 2015 and 2017, Inhofe owned stakes in multiple energy companies.
The stock buy has raised ethics concerns, with experts saying it highlights the conflict of interest that exists when elected officials’ financial interests are tied up in industries they have control over in the form of enacting or stopping legislation.

Trump warned of ‘disaster’ if he makes cuts to 2020 defense budget
Lawmakers are not allowed trade stock based on non-public information, but since the news of Trump’s defense spending request was already public, Inhofe’s short-lived Raytheon purchase would not have been classed as congressional insider trading, even if he had directed the purchase himself.
Still, one expert said the senator “likely has other nonpublic inside information, such as insight into what the final budget will look like and which industries stand to benefit.”

A ton of new releases are hitting theaters this week in an effort to convince families getting together for Thanksgiving to head off to their local multiplex. However, once Turkey Day is over, it’ll be a few weeks before another tentpole release hits theaters, and that’ll be an adventure for Spider-Man unlike any we’ve seen for the webslinger before.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be the first theatrically released animated Spider-Man movie, and it’ll also be the first time the Ultimate Spider-Man character Miles Morales is getting his own movie. But he’s got some other Spider-People coming along with him, bridging several different comic book universes into one for a promising animated adventure. Right now the early Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse box office tracking isn’t through the roof, but it’s certainly promising for this kind of movie.
So how much is this animated Spider-Man looking to make in its opening weekend? Find out below.
Deadline has early projections for the Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse box office debut that peg the movie pulling in somewhere between $ 30-$ 40 million. That might seem a little low for a property as popular as Spider-Man, but this is a movie that isn’t part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s animated, and it’s a much different approach to the comic book movie than we’ve seen before. So audiences may not be sure if it’s worth their time.
When it comes to comic book movies, the animated fare usually doesn’t make it to the big screen. A large amount of animated comic book movies are relegated to Blu-ray, DVD and VOD releases, but this feels like a potential gamechanger. Not only does the style make it stand out, but the scale of this movie is pretty big too. It has a chance to open up the big screen to even more animated superhero stories that might otherwise be too expensive or even complex in live-action form.
Futhermore, this version of Spider-Man puts a half-Latino, half-black character at the center of the Marvel Comics universe, which could help bring in more diverse demographics who may need a little more convincing to see the latest superhero movie. That means more butts in the seats, and more money at the box office. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the movie ends up exceeding these expectations, especially since it only has The Mule and Mortal Engines to contend with when it hits theaters.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, the latter also writing the script with Phil Lord, who also produced the movie with collaborator Chris Miller. The voice cast features Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Jake Johnson as Peter Parker, Liev Schreiber as The Kingpin, Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, John Mulaney as Spider-Ham and many more.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens December 14, 2018. Watch the most recent trailer here.

It’s official: the world loves Venom. The superhero film is already a big hit, and this weekend, it’s opening in China – and it’s opening big. So big, in fact, that it’s on track to earn as much, or even more, worldwide than all of Sony’s other Spider-Man– related movies. People just can’t get enough of Venom and his big, slimy tongue! If you’re a fan of Venom, this is good news, because this means more movies like Venom are on the way. If you’re not a fan of Venom, than this is bad news, because this means more movies like Venom are on the way.
I’m at a loss, folks. I never expected Venom to flop – the name recognition alone guaranteed it would turn a profit. But I never expected it to be this much of a hit. The Tom Hardy film about a giant slime monster and his human buddy has already made $ 600 million globally, and it’s nowhere near done. Venom opens in China this weekend, and per Deadline, it’s on its way to making another $ 100 million-plus there when all is said and done.
According to the report, if this happens, it would put Venom “in the Top 15 China openers ever, besting Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man And The Wasp.” Not only that, but the $ 100 million-plus would put the total around $ 700 million – and that’s just this weekend. It’s clearly going to keep making more, and if it does, it’s going to make as much, or more than, Sony’s Spider-Man movies. For comparison, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took in $ 709 million worldwide, total. The Amazing Spider-Man webbed itself a $ 758 million worldwide total, the first Spider-Man hauled in $ 822 million, Spider-Man 2 tapped-out at $ 784 million, and Spider-Man 3, another movie that featured Venom, topped off at $ 891 million. It’s reasonable to believe Venom might come close, or even surpass, these totals. And that’s nuts.
So what does this mean? Box office success always ensures imitation, and global box office success is even better. Studios are going to pay close attention to this, and start green-lighting their own movies like Venom. There are two ways to react to this news. If you enjoyed Venom, you’ll probably be thrilled. But if you thought Venom was a garbage fire, you’re going to be disheartened. And if you’re like me, and a little weary of constant superhero movies, you’re going to be slightly disappointed, because this means there’s no sign of the trend ever slowing down. On the plus-side, we don’t have to put up with any “superhero fatigue” articles for a while.

ABC’s Roseanne-less Roseanne spinoff is going to 11.
ABC announced on Friday that The Conners‘ freshman run has been extended by one episode, bringing its episode count to 11.
The Roseanne revival itself only ran for nine well-watched episodes last spring, prior to series lead Roseanne Barr tapping Tweet on the quip that would swiftly sink her considerable ship. The outspoken Barr likened Valerie Jarrett — an Iranian-born former senior advisor to President Barack Obama — to one of the apes from Planet of the Apes.
Following a long summer full of headlines, Barr explanations/apologies, cast reactions and industry speculation, The Conners premiered on Oct. 16 to 10.6 million total viewers and a 2.4 demo rating — on par with where the Roseanne revival had left off. With its second outing, it slipped double digits to 8 mil and a 1.7, but that still outpaces ABC’s No. 2 comedy, the 10-year-old Modern Family (which is averaging 5.2 mil and a 1.5 this season), by a whole bunch.
The Conners airs Tuesdays at 8.7c, leading into fellow freshman comedy The Kids Are Alright.
