A Blue Origin rocket with no crew onboard failed just over a minute after lifting off on Monday. 

The New Shepard rocket that took off from Blue Origin's West Texas facility on Monday was carrying cargo for research that it was going to send to the edge of space.

A livestream of the launch showed the New Shepard bursting into flames around 29,000 feet above ground. The capsule above the booster rocket then detached itself and parachuted back to the ground.

 

Blue Origin said on Twitter there was a "booster failure" on the flight, triggering the escape system. The capsule "successfully separated" from the rocket, the spaceflight company added.

It was the first major incident for billionaire Jeff Bezos' spaceflight company since it opened commercial services to the public in 2021.

The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, is investigating the incident, which it called a "mishap" in a statement sent to Insider.

"The capsule landed safely and the booster impacted within the designated hazard area. No injuries or public property damage have been reported," said the FAA.

"Before the New Shepard vehicle can return to flight, the FAA will determine whether any system, process, or procedure related to the mishap affected public safety. This is standard practice for all mishap investigations," the FAA added.

When Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos decided to accuse David Pecker, the CEO of National Enquirer’s parent company, of blackmail on Thursday, he chose an interesting way to do it: a post on Medium. 

Medium is a blogging media site founded by Evan Williams, one of the founders of Twitter. Bezos also tweeted about his blog post, to his 834,000 followers, so that’s a double score for technologies created by Williams and used by Bezos in this drama. (Just in case you haven’t been following closely: intimate photos and text messages between Bezos and the woman he was having an affair with were obtained by the Enquirer, which published some of the trove and threatened to publish others).

On Thursday afternoon, Jeff Bezos took to Medium to excoriate David Pecker and his company American Media Inc.—which owns the National Enquirer—for attempting “extortion and blackmail.” Rather than comply with their demands, the Amazon founder and CEO (who also owns The Washington Post) has published emails from AMI executives threatening to publish a number of embarrassing photos of Bezos and a woman the Enquirer claims is his mistress.

The kerfuffle all started several weeks ago, when the National Enquirer published text messages it alleged proved an affair between Bezos—who is married—and another woman, Lauren Sánchez. As a result, Bezos commissioned an investigation into how the paper obtained the text messages, an act which he claims has enraged Pecker. Bezos writes that AMI subsequently contacted his lawyers demanding a halt to the investigation. Should Bezos’ lawyers not comply, the Enquirer would publish 10 purloined selfies of Bezos and Sanchez, one of which described as a “d*ck pick”.

The following day, Bezos writes that he received another email that he also reproduced in full on Medium. The message demands that he and his lead investigator, Gavin de Becker, make public statements to the effect that “they have no knowledge or basis for suggesting that AMI’s coverage was politically motivated or influenced by political forces, and [they make] an agreement that they will cease referring to such a possibility.”

Amazon workers are told that Jeff Bezos considers himself the least important person at the company.

Amazon CEO and world’s richest man Jeff Bezos has invoked Twitter wrath for seemingly an all-around commendable cause – setting up a charity fund to fight homelessness and create a preschool network for the underprivileged.

The so-called Day One Fund will be multi-billionaire businessman’s most significant foray into philanthropy to date. The 2$ billion pledged by Bezos will be used to finance two separate funds to be created. The first one, “The Day 1 Families Fund” will provide grants to organizations and groups that help accommodate homeless families, while “The Day 1 Academies Fund” will run a network of Montessori-based nurseries in impoverished communities. Bezos was previously criticized for giving relatively little to charity.

Many on Twitter, however, did not hurry to heap praise on Bezos’ new endeavor, pointing out Amazon’s practices of underpaying its workers and forcing employees to work in stuffy warehouses without air conditioning.

Some resorted to the same argument as US President Donald Trump, who has attacked Amazon for not paying enough taxes and using US postal office as its “delivery boy.”

Senator Bernie Sanders, who has been one of Amazon’s most vocal critics, last week introduced the Stop BEZOS Act, aimed at placing a tax on big companies like Amazon and Walmart so they compensate the government for the benefits it has to pay their low-income employees.

“That’s what a rigged economy is about,” Sanders said, as he introduced the bill.

Many Twitter users agreed with that reasoning. “If billionaires like Bezos were properly taxed then we wouldn’t need billionaires like Bezos to sweep in and ‘rescue’ people failed by our underfunded systems,” one wrote.

Another brought up the fact that Amazon strong-armed the Seattle city council to abandon the plan to tax the company in order to raise funds for tackling the mounting homelessness crisis.

Seattle, where Amazon has its headquarters, has been plagued by the rising number of homeless residents for the past several years. Currently more than half of the homeless population in the King County are sleeping rough on the streets, due to the lack of shelters.

The Seattle City Council unanimously backed the proposed business tax, dubbed ‘Amazon Tax’, in May, only to back down a month later after Amazon halted the construction planning for a new high-rise in the city. The project cancellation could have potentially robbed the city of 7,000 new jobs.

While the online retail giant’s presence made Seattle the fastest-growing big city in the US, it also has taken a toll on its residents, driving up rent prices, clogging traffic and overwhelming public transportation.

Ahead of a major event on Thursday night where Bezos will be interviewed by Carlyle Group co-founder and co-CEO David Rubenstein at the DC Economic Club, Amazon told The Washington Post on Tuesday that no announcement would be forthcoming on Bezos’s visit to the city. Reached by Business Insider on Thursday, an Amazon spokesperson said they had nothing to add on top of what was reported in The Post.
