Luc Besson and EuropaCorp may have taken a big financial hit when Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets bombed at the box office, but that doesn’t mean they’re down for the count. Word comes today that Netflix, in their never-ending quest to produce all the content you’ll never need, are in talks with Besson and EuropaCorp for a multi-picture deal. Fingers crossed for Valerian 2? More on the Luc Besson Netflix deal below.
Who says there are no second chances? After a record loss of $ 135 Million thanks to the box office failure of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, director Luc Besson and EuropaCorp might be ready to bounce back. Variety reports that Netflix is in talks with Besson and EuropaCorp to have Besson produce and direct several films over the next few years. The films would be Netflix originals, each with a $ 30 million budget. In other words, don’t expect huge, expansive Valerian-like adventures here. But if Besson wanted to make a whittled-down Valerian sequel, this might be his chance.
The deal might also give Netflix the option to buy into EuropaCorp’s library, which includes the Taken and Transporter franchises. Netflix isn’t the only company interested in EuropaCorp – Lionsgate has been considering purchasing as well. EuropaCorp clearly needs the help. They’re currently buried under a heavy debt load of about €230 million ($ 285 million). Per Variety, EuropaCorp’s value has” plummeted by more than 60%” since the release of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
If Netflix goes ahead with this deal, it’ll be just another addition to their never-ending quest to build an unbeatable library of original content. Recently, the streaming giant signed a deal with Mark Millar’s Millarworld to create a wealth of original content. Besson would be the latest big filmmaker to climb aboard Netflix, joining heavy-hitters like Martin Scorsese, Angelina Jolie, Bong Joon-ho, Damien Chazelle and more.
For now, Netflix is riding high, but they’ll soon have some stiff competition. Disney is currently hard at work building their own streaming service, and so is Apple. In other words, everyone knows that streaming is the future, and everyone is trying to get in on the ground floor now. The future of how films are created, and distributed, is about to change forever, whether we like it or not.
Meanwhile, Besson is not letting the failure of Valerian slow him down. The director is currently filming Anna, starring Helen Mirren, Cillian Murphy and Luke Evans.

The making of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was a long journey for writer and director Luc Besson, who started reading the work of comic book writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières when he was 10 years old. He brought the comic and its two galaxy-saving agents, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne), to life with a giddy, exuberant race-against-the-clock sci-fi adventure earlier this year. Besson’s dreams (and his hard work) shows in every one of the film’s environments, which shine bright with the sort of color absent in most of today’s blockbusters.
While Valerian didn’t catch on with American audiences when it was released over the summer, Besson appears hopeful that more people will come around to his movie, which he believes is best on the second watch. We recently spoke to Besson at a press day for the Blu-Ray release of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, where he discussed the reaction to the movie, that big market sequence, and much more.

You’ve been talking about the movie for a long time now.
Yeah, it’s okay. Talking about something you love, so it’s okay.
I liked the bit in the bonus features where Ethan Hawke says you told him to play Jolly the Pimp like Dennis Hopper.
It’s Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now. Yeah, when he’s a photographer and he has no film.
It shows in his performance. How many days did you have to shoot with him and Rihanna?
He was there for like two, three days. But he was lucky because all the other parts they were like so prepped and so … I was guiding everyone so clearly. Ethan was the only one who had freedom. I told him, you know, come on the set and have fun, let’s have fun for three days, because you’re gonna be the pimp of Rihanna. He said, “Yeah, good, I’m coming!”
So we did the costume and then we build the character, he has the lines and everything, but we just have to create it together and it was so much fun because you don’t have … It’s not so often you have this opportunity to have this freedom on the set. By the way, the scene with Dane outside of the club is the first day of shooting for the entire film. First day.
Did you want that to be day one for a reason or is that how the schedule worked out?
No, it was dates, you know, like the Rihanna dates and things.

You did save the last scene for last, though, right?
This kind of trick, yeah, I’ve done it. I’m always careful with that. Dane and Cara, they’re so sweet. They worked together for eight months and it’s the last day of shooting, so they’re very emotional, if you do that to her she’s gonna start crying and then they’re gonna say goodbye and the last shot is kiss. Yeah, you put everything in a good condition to have some emotion on the screen. There’s something real about the kissing goodbye and the fact they were together for so long and, you know, you try sometimes to help a little bit the situation.
It happens to me, for example, when there’s a very difficult scene for an actor to play. First, he’s scared about the scene, so you don’t put the scene right away, and you wait until he’s comfortable with the character, and then now he’s comfortable, now you can make the scene and then suddenly you say, “Now, I’m gonna make it here,” so the guy says “fuck, fuck, fuck!” And he continues and when you arrive you say, “No, I’m gonna do it here.” And then suddenly, now the guy wants to make the scene, when he was scared of making the scene at the beginning. So now you turn the thing the other way, now he want the fucking scene, he wants to cry, he wants to … And then when you feel the guy come, you say “Okay, we shoot tomorrow.” It’s a way to help a little bit, you know, put people in the situation.
How complicated was it planning the big market sequence?
The big market was the most complicated. Before we started shooting in prep, I made this big meeting with all the people, we were like fifty in a room, special effects, everyone, and I explained the scene. It takes me an hour to explain a 17 minute scene. And at the end they all look at me and say, “uh huh”, and I can tell you no one understand. No one.
Does that make you nervous?
It makes me nervous. I say, God, I need them to understand. So what I did is I took the entire school, I have a school in Paris, sixty students, I take the sixty students, we put the six hundred shots of the storyboard on the wall and we shot the entire six hundred shots with the students. One by one, I went to the editing and I edit the scene. So when it was the desert it was little red, when it was the vision, the merchant vision, it was blue, and when we were really in the other world it was yellow. So now everyone knows where we are in which shot.
When people talk about your work and your style, do you recognize or agree with how they define your style?
No, I respect it. You have a child and everybody says “Oh my God, it’s so much you,” but you don’t see it. My boy is him. He’s my boy, for me he’s so defined as a human being so I can’t see me inside him. But people around say “Oh my God, he’s exactly you.” I think it’s the same … No, I don’t have, I don’t see my style. The only thing I can see is my involvement. I never have done, in my life, one shot for nothing. That’s it: if I do a shot, I’m on the camera, I designed the shot, I was the shot. Even if it’s a hand, or foot, or whatever. I have these dedications, shot by shot, on everything so maybe at the end of the day when you watch one of my films it doesn’t matter what is the subject, maybe you feel this texture, and I usually try to be really at the right place at the right moment with the actor.
Right. You always look like you’re right in the action on the bonus features.
I’m on the camera, all the time, so, I grab the actors sometimes during the shot.
Do you think that helps the actors?
According to them, not only Dane and Cara, according all of them, they’re always surprised the first two days, always, because the director is here, and then after two days they just love it. They love it.
Because I’m also able, like, let’s say that you have a long scene with a lot of dialogue where the emotion, the tears, have to come in the middle of the scene. You can tell when you’re there because I feel them, I smell them. You can tell, for example, that she’s late in a scene, she couldn’t catch the rhythm at the beginning and she’s gonna be late at the middle of the thing, but now it’s coming, now it’s coming, but it’s too late. So you … In the middle of the take I don’t count, I say “Breathe, breathe, breathe, go back to the start, go back to the start.” And then you’re using the fact she’s hot now, she’s here, to start again and then now she’s gonna be in rhythm. You know, with the emotion.
So, by being there, you can help them, you can really help them to get the thing.

When filmmaker Luc Besson was 10 years old, he was reading the comic book he’d adapt into a massive feature film 48 years later. Based on Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières‘ “Ambassador of Shadows,” published in 1975, Besson has brought their colorful, wacky world to to the big screen with his personal touch on every frame. From the complex, clever set pieces to the jokes to the colorful environments, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is pure Besson.
In a race against the clock, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) will have to save the city of Alpha, where alien species from all over the galaxy come together to share knowledge. The world feels endless, full of all sorts of aliens, characters, and environments. It took many years it took to build this world piece-by-piece, and the French director behind La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element recently told us about the process.
Below, check out our Luc Besson interview.
The movie is so bright and colorful. What conversations did you have with your DP and VFX houses about the color choices?
I mean, it’s days, and days, and days of work, every day, so it’s like, I have the feeling, like in the 19th century when the people were during furniture by hand, it’s the way we made the film. With time, and love, and polishing it a bit. Put some color, wait for a week…and then, we’d put another layer. It’s really made by hand, and that’s why it looks so finished, so clean, and…it’s so by hand, you know? It’s not a machine who have done it, it’s really point-by-point, we did it. It’s a nice piece of creation, and so many people work on it, I’m amazed. The credits take forever. It’s almost like 2,000 people work on the film.
Do you just take it a day at a time and try not to think about how big of an undertaking it is?
Every day you have to do 15 shots. That’s, don’t even, like a horse, put things here, and don’t watch left and right. Do what you have to do today, and today, you have to take these five stones and put them here and start the wall. That’s it. Don’t think. Just do what you have to do per day. If you watch the big picture, you die.
Was there one VFX shot in particular that was a real challenge?
A few. Do you remember when [Valerian] tried to escape in the big market, and he’s pushing everyone and he’s going on the top of the bus, and going down…this one was challenging. It took a year to do it. And we have an entire blue screen stages, 6,000 meters square, feet square, with a flying camera on cables, and yes, two years, the exact path, with people, and block of object, and…when we finish that, they have a year of work in post-production. A year. And the shot is like 30 seconds.
What were the other complicated effects shots?
The canyon, a big market, with the flying camera who goes in the canyon. This one was kind of insane also. That was a complicated one. The Rihanna scene, takes six days to shoot and almost eight months of work for a minute. Sometimes with some distance I say, “We’re crazy.”
I know how much these comics have meant to you, and how long you’ve been thinking about the film. Over the past 15 years have you just had these environments, and characters, and story just waiting in your mind ready to get out?
Yeah, piece-by-piece, yeah. Little by little, it’s almost like going to flea market every day and finding just one little piece for your house, you know? And at the end, the house is full decorated, you know? But it, sometime it takes years to finally get all the nice pieces, the perfect pieces and, but I was lucky also to work with some creative designers. I mean, they did the job also. I mean, they were insane. They come with ideas that I would never even think. I mean, the first time, you know the Omelites? They’re the ones that were on strings and working on the golden plates, on the walls of the formations. The first time the designer, he came and show me the drawing, I was like, “What the fuck is that?” Because he didn’t try to, I didn’t give any indication. They were just like searching, and one day he come with this thing and I say, “Oh my God, that’s amazing.” And then I modify a few things and say, “Okay, I’m gonna keep turn like this.” And then when we make it even better, but the idea comes like this, to watch the thing, and you said, “This is in the film for sure.” You know?

The second act set piece goes from so many different locations and moves at such a fast pace. I imagine you had to heavily storyboard that scene?
The crucial thing is the storyboard on this one, and I work a lot, a lot all night, I have all my drawings so I know, and I have drawings for each part and thing. And you really go piece-by-piece, you have to – it’s like building a car, and it doesn’t look like a car. You put like pieces, mechanical pieces together. But you have to believe that at the end it will be a car who was working. You know what I mean?
Yeah.
So, that’s how you made it. Little piece by little piece and you just have to believe. You have to believe that what you think at the beginning is working at the end. And then, suddenly, after months and months and months, you put your hands on the key, your heart is like, and then you turn the key, and then, woo, it’s working, and you say, “Whew, and it’s all, it’s working.”
But you will totally accept that, if you turn the key and nothing happen you say, “Okay, we did something wrong in the mechanical [department], so let’s start again, let’s see where.” It’s this kind of feeling. But maybe one of the crucial thing was also to…it’s like a football team, in a way, even the best player in the world cannot win, they have to be 11. And sometime, just the 11 together are stronger than a couple of the best guy, you know what I mean?
So, the people that I surround myself, special effect, costume, building stages, sound, I mean, honestly, the quality of the people around, and the designers and all, I mean, they made the film. I was the captain, but they made the film. They were the best bunch of the coolest, and best artists we can find today around the world. And dedicated, they want this film to be good, they no way. They were not just like, paycheck or thing, they want this thing to rock. They were as dedicated than me in fact.
One effect I want to ask about is Bubble. Did Rihanna’s casting influence the movements or design at all?
No it’s the reverse, everything was designed before. With the choreography, and Emily Livingstone, who works on it, to do the choreography six months before, and worked with her. It was four people in the show. There’s Rihanna, Emily, and two others. And you can tell. Six months to, for the special effect, for the zing.
Do you have a big booklet with a wealth of information about those Bubble, Jolly the Pimp (Ethan Hawke), and all of the alien species?
Oh, I have a bible almost 300 or 400 pages, I have the entire history of Alpha, from day one to 28th century. I have few pages per alien, where they live, what they eat, how they reproduce. I have the background story of Valerian, Laureline, Clive Owen, everyone. I have an entire bible, you have to, you have to give that to the actors to know where they’re living, you know? It’s like, you’re doing a film about the 18th century, and you giving a book from Flaubert or Victor Hugo, or, and you say, “Okay, read that, because that’s the mood.” You know? So, you have to do that. But Bubble, for example, if you read the comic book called The Ambassador of Shadows, Bubble is in it, but such a small part. It’s in it, and I just took this small idea and make a big character.
I know you had some frustrations on The Fifth Element, that VFX hadn’t quite caught up with what you were doing. How much did the experience of making that film and creating that world maybe influence your work on Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets?
I did the film with the experience I have at the time. I was pretty young, so I did my best. But, I didn’t have the experience. I feel much more comfortable even if the film was much, way much more complex in Valerian. I feel comfortable because I have 20 more years of experience. Lucy was very helpful. Because I work with ILM on some of the shots, so, I get more used to work with the team and do caption, and all this.
I was more prepared for Valerian than I was with Fifth Element. Actually, when we did The Fifth Element there was this new company, who sent me a letter and say, “Oh, we are a new company for special effect, and we would love for you to come to our company.” And the letter was signed by the president. And the president was Jim Cameron. It was Digital Domain. So, it was the first film made at Digital Domain, was that Cameron was running. And it’s funny, because 20 years later, he invite me on the set of Avatar, and he was so sweet with me and give me a lot of tips. And I think it’s just funny, it’s just funny that 20 years later I finally did Valerian, and he’s doing Avatar 2. It’s great.

How was it working with Gary Oldman? Like driving a Ferrari for the first time, according to Luc Besson. The writer-director behind this summer’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets recently took to Reedit to promote his upcoming comic book adaptation. The gregarious filmmaker shared a few memories from some of our favorite works of his, The Fifth Element, Leon, and La Femme Nikita.
If you want to know which other actors the director had in mind for Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) and Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker), then check out some of the more entertaining answers from the Luc Besson Reddit AMA below.
The other day the new trailer came out for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which looks unlike any other big summer movie in recent memory. The exuberant colors and the sense of gleeful, self-aware escapism scream Besson’s name. The trailer also shouts the names of comic book writer Pierre Christin and illustrator by Jean-Claude Mézières, the two artists responsible for creating special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne).
Here are a few of Besson’s delightful and insightful responses from his recent session on Reddit (via Tvovermind):
Who else did you have in mind for The Fifth Element if Bruce Willis had passed?
I had asked Mel Gibson first because he had his office next to mine at Warner Brothers. He peeked into my office every morning to tell me that he was thinking about it. After 3 months, he passed. But we became friends. Bruce was the only other choice I had in my mind.
Mr. Besson, when writing and casting 5th Element, did you have anyone specifically in mind for Ruby Rod? Did Chris Tucker’s interpretation completely change the character or was that more or less as written?
It was written for Prince. I met him, he said yes. But then he went on a world tour for 10 years!! We couldn’t find time in his schedule. Then I started casting and the two finalists were Chris Tucker and Jamie Foxx. Jamie was amazing, but he was as strong as Bruce, and Chris looked like a shrimp so I knew it would be funnier. But what a luxury to have to choose between these three talented people.
What’s your favorite movie? Sci-fi or otherwise?
It’s impossible to give only one. But here are a handful of titles in this order: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Avatar, Alien, Blade Runner…
Why so long between sci-fi epics?
First, they are not so easy to do. And sometimes people don’t understand why I go from a French B&W film to an historical figure, but by exploring different worlds and working with different subjects, I became richer so when I came back to sci-fi I felt much more invigorated. It’s like a chef – if he’s cooking the same meal all of the time, she/he doesn’t learn anything. She/he has to travel and sample everything to come back with a new menu.
As a huge fan of Leon, did Gary Oldman’s “EVERYONE!” scream scare everyone on the set since no one expected he was going to deliver his line that way?
Yes, especially because the hallway amplified his scream. The entire building was aware. We shot the scene in spanish Harlem, so we had some fake police cars in the street and a bunch of people watching us film. Suddenly on the other side of the street a car stops and four guys actually robbed a bank while we were shooting. The people watched the robbery for a minute and then just turned back to set where it looked more interesting. One guy said to me “we don’t see a movie set every day around here.”
Can you talk a little bit about your writing process?
I always start with one idea or one concept, then I take notes. Sometimes that lasts 15 years. Then I put four pieces of paper in front of me, my four acts. And if it doesn’t work on four pages I don’t write the script. When my structure is ready, I start writing and usually it goes very fast. Almost like I press the “print” button. To give you an example, I wrote Leon in 14 days.
What was your inspiration behind Leon the Professional and what brought you to do that movie?
Jean Reno loved the character of the cleaner in La Femme Nikita so much that he asked me to write a film about this character. So I started thinking about his cousin in America. I was not supposed to direct it, but I fell in love with the script.
While the director is already dreaming of a sequel to Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets – and writing one – he said he intends on directing a smaller picture next, something more similar in scale to Angel A.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opens in theaters July 21.

It’s not every day a studio rents out a theater and hosts an event just to debut a trailer, but that’s exactly what STX Entertainment did last night in Hollywood with the new trailer for Luc Besson’s sci-fi thriller Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Besson, his wife and producer Virginie Silla, and star Cara Delevingne were in attendance, and I had the chance to speak with them about this jaw-dropping new look at the film.
The new trailer will be online tomorrow, but in the meantime, you can read my reaction to the footage, and learn more about what we can expect from this visually stunning movie.
The trailer begins in the midst of a heist on a barren desert landscape. A small vehicle hovers across the dusty ground under a multi-colored sky and some Vasquez Rocks-style formations in the background. Special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are inside with a group of aliens, including a big one who gets angry and starts ripping the vehicle apart. In need of a quick escape, the heroes grab what they came for (some sort of mysterious package) and leap from the ground-level vehicle into a hatch on their own Millennium Falcon-style ship, called the Intruder, and it pulls up and out of the planet’s atmosphere into space. When they’re reprimanded by their commanding officer for being late, Valerian smirks, “Well, time flies when you’re having fun!”
The duo flies into Alpha Station, which is the “city of a thousand planets” from the title. It’s described in a voiceover as the one place where all species in the universe come together to share their knowledge with each other. We’re bombarded with images of a bunch of different types of alien creatures, including a group of Wall*E-esque aliens pulling what may be data cartridges out of a place that looked like some kind of massive server farm. In a separate environment, we see a small alien with suction cup fingers touching one of several glowing orbs, which seemed to contain something precious (a food source, or perhaps the station’s information itself?). The voiceover explains how an evil wants to destroy this Utopian society, and we see bipedal aliens that look like a cross between John Carter’s aliens and the Na’vi from Avatar, and Clive Owen (a commander of some kind) informs a suited-up Valerian and Laureline that they have 10 hours to stop this impending threat.
There’s a dazzling beach planet with a frightened looking alien looking at a ship flying through the sky overhead. We get a glimpse of the inside of a club where Rihanna dances and transforms from wearing a black cabaret outfit to a white nurse’s get-up (much to Valerian’s delight), and we see a look at a mean-looking alien who holds a double-barreled handgun at two other aliens standing opposite him, and the gun’s barrels spread apart and one locks on to each of them. There’s a chase with some giant whale creatures, who look angry and hungry. Then the two heroes fight their way through a quick montage, and the trailer ends with Valerian falling through a glass pane into a three-point hero stance and Laureline proudly telling a crowd of onlookers, “I taught him that.”
Read on for my reaction to the footage and comments from Besson, Silla, and Delevingne.

Now 20-years-old, the Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich sci-fi film has become something of a cult classic.
At the time of its release, the movie completely split critics, being hailed as both the best and worst summer blockbuster of 1997.
Now as director Besson prepares to release his latest futuristic sci-fi film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, fans are wondering if he would be up for making a sequel to The Fifth Element.
Express.co.uk caught up with the filmmaker in the Winner’s Room of the Empire Awards, where he collected the gong for Empire Inspiration.
When asked about The Fifth Element 2, Besson at first gave a blunt “no”, before being reminded of comments he made about a spin-off set in the same universe.
He said: “Ah, that’s not the same.”
“I don’t know I’m not thinking…I love my freedom to be able to think and go where I want to go.
“I’m like the pollen from the flowers at Spring. I follow the wind.”
We also asked the iconic director what he had planned for his next film, but he didn’t want to think about it until Valerian was out the way.
He added: “Let’s finish this one I have because, y’know, I still have two months of work so can’t think of anything else other than finishing this thing.
“I feel like a mother, eight months and a half [pregnant], ready to deliver in two weeks.”
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will be released on August 4, 2017.
